4 out of 5 stars Aviation enthusiasts will enjoy it.......1997-11-19

I purchased Dauntless Marine out of curiosity since my father was a member of VMSB 133 - another USMC scout bombing squadron in WWII. I really enjoyed the book. Dauntless Marine is an interesting account of U.S. Marine Corp. action in America's first major offensive against Japan in World War II. It also provides a fascinating look at the dangerous tactic of dive bombing - a lost "art" so to speak - and the nature of a dedicated and skillful pilot. It should appeal to those interested in military history, WWII, and aviation.

5 out of 5 stars The music is heard at last for an unsung hero!.......1997-02-15

A meticulously researched tribute to a loved one lost. Alexander White undertakes to tell the story of his late uncle: Navy Cross winner, Joseph Sailer Jr. "Dauntless Marine" is the story of an American hero's life and death. The book takes the reader from a survey of Sailer's Philadelphia roots, through his academic and career accomplishments (including a top secret mission to the UK) before finally landing at the far flung shores of Guadalcanal. Anecdotal gems are liberally spread throughout the text. Dauntless Marine is an American story through and through and a testament of one man's courage and devotion to duty. Book Description

John Bardeen was an unassuming man, a humble, soft-spoken Midwesterner whose life was filled with simple pastimes like a Sunday picnic with the family or a good game of golf. He was also a giant of modern physics, an extraordinary hero of twentieth century science. His seminal work earned him the distinction of being the only person ever to win two Nobel Prizes in physics -- both awarded for discoveries that were breathtaking in scope and responsible for advancing the course of human history.

Bardeen ranks among the most imaginative and inspired scientists of our time. But his genius was quiet and unobtrusive, hidden behind the façade of an average man, which perhaps why we know so little about him. As exuberantly talented as Albert Einstein, Bardeen had no desire to mug for the cameras or prove himself eccentric. Easily equal to the intellect of Richard Feynman, Bardeen was simply not irreverent and offbeat. As eccentricity and outsize personalities have come to symbolize the true nature of genius and creativity, Bardeen remains cloaked in obscurity.

Without Bardeen's first Nobel Prize-winning discovery -- the transistor -- the electronics revolution, which brought us desktop computers, supercomputers, and microelectronics, would still be the stuff of science fiction. His second great breakthrough -- the prevailing theory of electrical superconductivity which for years had stumped Einstein, Feynman, and many others -- promises to revolutionize twenty-first century technology with super-fast "mag-lev trains," supercolliding atom smashers, and other fantastic technological wonders.

Yet despite these achievements, this astonishing, though decidedly modest, Midwesterner was often overlooked by both the media as well as the public, simply because he differed radically from the popular stereotype of genius. Through an exploration of his science as well as his life, a fresh and thoroughly engaging portrait of genius and the nature of creativity emerges. This fascinating biography provides a whole new perspective on what it truly means to be a genius.

3 out of 5 stars a brilliant and extremely interesting scientist; a disappointing book.......2006-08-11

John Bardeen was one of nature's prodigies. After an academic career at the University of Wisconsin - Madison, Princeton and Harvard he wound up at Bell Labs where he co-invented the transistor, for which he eventually received a Nobel Prize. Having to deal with a notorious egomaniac of a boss at Bell Labs, who was intent on keeping him from making further discoveries, he fled to the University of Illinois Urbana Champaign, where he found a life-long sinecure, and explained superconductivity, and eventually earned another Nobel Prize. Incidentally, the authors of this book both were or are affiliated with UIUC.

The authors do a good job of describing a taciturn scientist and golfer who was much-loved and greatly respected as a person. Unfortunately, as with all biographies of prodigies, it generally is a foregone conclusion that the authors are not equal to the accomplishments of their subject. Even bearing this caveat in mind, I found the book to be a disappointment.

I understood as much of Bardeen's seminal work explaining superconductivity after reading the book as I had before, and this was not for lack of attentive reading. This cannot have been because it is inordinately complicated; Bardeen had been wary of publishing his explanation of superconductivity because it was so simple that he felt he must be missing something.

Similarly, the relevance of the transistor - the other discovery for which Dr. Bardeen won a Nobel Prize - is explained as the invention of a smaller vacuum tube which is of use in consumer electronics and hearing aids. That transistors could be, were and are, connected in such a way as to allow logical circuits, microchips and the internet to exist, doesn't get the mention it merits. On the other hand, there are ample references to the sociology of Nobel Laureates, Thomas Kuhn's theories about scientific advances, and even a 17 page epilogue or bonus material concerning theories about how prodigies come to be. On top all this, the dye used to color the hardcover version of this book rubbed off onto my fingertips.

I enjoyed reading parts of this book, and hope that eventually other authors will write a more complete and informative book about a most interesting scientist.

5 out of 5 stars Overall, a Fine Portrait.......2003-02-04

I should really write two reviews. One with a rating of four stars, and one with five. Then the average will be 4.5, which I feel is the right rating. I have only two complaints. First, the discussion of minority carrier injection was not clear to me. I went back to the April 1992 issue of "Physics Today." There, the discussion is done just right, the importance of holes is clear. Second, the issue of "genius" and it's identification and cultivation in chapter 17 did not appeal to me. In my opinion, if we were to conclude with a jumping off point from Bardeen's life, it would be to address the question "why is he so unknown today?" That would have been a good epilogue. It's a good question. In W. H. Cropper's book "Great Physicists: etc." Bardeen is not mentioned. A real shame. Bardeen easily ranks with the physicists in that book.

But there really is so much to enjoy in this book. Although born in Wisconsin, and not Minnesota, Bardeen would have been so comfortable in Garrison Keillor's world. Bardeen seems straight out of Lake Wobegone and names like Clarence Bunsen and Florian Krebsbach kept coming to mind. Here was a loyal, moral, dedicated man, focused on his life and work, but needing few words to talk about it. Together with Brattain and Schockley (sort of), Bardeen invents the transistor, comes home to his wife, who is cooking dinner, and says to her, "we discovered something today." Wife Jane says, "that's great." After unraveling one of the greatest puzzles in all of physics, Bardeen says to Charles Slichter, "well, I think we've figured out superconductivity." Wonderful, News from Lake Wobegone stuff. (Hoddeson and Daitch's discussion of superconductivity is quite good, by the way.)

But that's the fun part. In the physics world, there are so few Bardeens. Not just in terms of intellect, but also in terms of generosity, humility, broad and inclusive vision, and overall respect and like for colleagues. I particularly liked the relationship between Bardeen and Brattain. Some physicists can only work alone, but for those who prefer collaboration, finding a partner like Brattain makes every workday fun and exciting.

Chapter 15 on Bardeen's work with charge density waves was also interesting, if dark. This chapter is an important lesson to those who believe science is the absolute collection of truths and facts. In reality, science is filled with that we do not understand and, as a result, consists of differing opinions and views, just like any other field. It was disheartening, but realistic, I feel, to read that disagreement can also include hurtful disrespect from colleagues/competitors, but Bardeen always maintained the highest levels of professionalism.

It was also disheartening to read in the acknowledgements that Betsy Bardeen Greytak had passed away. ...P>Other than physicsits, I'm not sure what audience will appreciate this book. But it will be interesting for all those, like myself, who have read, enjoyed, and mostly understood the "popular" Richard Feynman books and biographies.

4 out of 5 stars The truth about genius.......2002-11-19

John Bardeen was one of the most important and prolific physicists of the twentieth century, on par with the likes of Niels Bohr and Richard Feynman, but the general public hardly knows his name. In this eloquent and entertaining biography, Lillian Hoddeson and Vicki Daitch capture the true essence of this quiet, gentle genius. They bring forth aspects of the warm, genuiune man behind the science that gave humanity the transistor and solved the almost intractable problem of superconductivity. Bardeen was a giant of 20th century science, and "True Genius" is the definitive story of his life.

5 out of 5 stars Diamond of many facets.......2002-11-13

I read the brief "Publishers Weekly" review for True Genius, as well as the more cryptic but more positive comments of others. From the very first sentence I knew that the "Publishers Weekly" review would be superficial, and maybe even wrong, which then is of what help to a reader and potential book customer? Living in the U.S. democracy, how can we not be curious and not read about the Founders? Similarly, how can we be immersed in all the new electronics (computers, cell phones, DVD and CD machines, MRI's, digital machinery---in fact, Si here, Si there, Si everywhere) and not be curious about how all this happened, what sort of ingenious mind, or minds, might be at the beginning of it all? Imagine the calamity on the planet if the transistor vanished for a day. Does that help in understanding the scale of a Bardeen, of "True Genius"! I knew John Bardeen for 40 years (as my teacher, friend, colleague) and still I learned something further from Hoddeson and Daitch and the material they unearthed for "True Genius", a fascinating biography (a different kind of story). Hoddeson and Daitch do not disappoint in their biography of Bardeen and in elucidating over many chapters his kind of genius, which "Publishers Weekly" doesn't seem to appreciate. Genius is a diamond of many facets, and Hoddeson and Daitch reveal a Bardeen facet. It isn't the last chapter of "True Genius" that matters. It's the whole book, all the chapters, that reveal an American hero---if you will, a genius.

              5 out of 5 stars Success Story.......2006-01-26

I have not only read this book, but have also met Mr. Rosner the author. In fact he gave me the book because he diagnosed my daughter with a learning difficulty while she was in the second grade. We used the "dots" exorcise for several months and other suggestions. My daughter graduated high school in 2003 with college credits and a high ranking. As Mr. Rosner writes, the difficulty was corrected by informed willing parents who were willing to inform teachers. My daughter is now a junior in college majoring in English with teaching acreditation. Her current GPA is 3+. There is hope and this book is a beginning.

5 out of 5 stars enough with the labels already.......2003-08-03

Every child is challenged in some way - the trick is figuring out how to turn challenges into successes. I love books that don't just catalog every possible disorder a child could have but gives you strategies on how to give a child tools to learn with his or her own style. This book is pragmatic and helpful not condescending.

5 out of 5 stars Practical Guide to Improving Performance.......2000-05-08

This book is more functional than some I have read. It presents practical information regarding steps that can be taken to help overcome learning problems. The approach emphasizes not labeling children as learning disabled. It includes specific things to look for as causes to the learning problems and practical steps to improve the weaker skills. The book also includes some tests that you can conduct yourself to assess strengths and weaknesses. It also does not dismiss a child if he/she is over a certain age. It acknowledges that the older your child gets, the more difficult it may be, but improvement is still possible.

Perhaps the Table of Contents may be of use to you if you are considering buying this book. (1) Learning Disability, Dyslexia, Attention Deficit Disorder and Other Such Conditions, (2) Identifying the Problem, (3) Physical, Emotional and Neuromotor Factors, (4) Visual and Auditory Perceptual (Analysis) Skills, (5) Expressive and Receptive Language Abilities, (6) Where the Problems Are: Reading, Spelling, Writing, and Arithmetic, (7) Treatment Options, (8) Improving Perceptual Skills, (9) Improving a Child's Language Skills, (10) Compensatory Instruction, (11) Compensatory Instruction Methods, (12) The Instructional Environment, (13) Prevention, (14) Conclusion, Appendix A: Visual Perceptual Skills, Appendix B: Auditory Perceptual Skills, Appendix C: Testing and Teaching Decoding Activities

I would recommend this book for all teachers and parents who have preschoolers or younger students who perform below average.

5 out of 5 stars A must read for all who work/parent LD children.......1998-11-15

Having 2 very bright children with learning difficulties (or as a school might claim LD's) I was hooked on the book while reading the Introduction, and I quote:

"One of the two main goals of this book is to dispel the notion that these children have a permanent condition that will forever prevent them from achieving their learning potential and are therefore destined to a lifetime of the emotional pain that accompanies failure. This is not so...."

How wonderful to know and be given guidance that as a parent we can do something to enable our children to achieve to their learning potential. There's some explanation of what to test, why to test and what to do with the test results and why. Also there are many auditory and visual perceptual activities provided in the book that a parent can do with their child to develop the skills the child needs so that he/she can succeed at school.

Special Needs educators have tried over and over to explain to us that we did not understand that LD's are for life. Hmm, guess they haven't read this book, wish they would.

In Iced Tea, author Fred Thompson serves up 50 vibrant variations on "the house wine of the South," using black, green, and oolong teas ("considered by some to be the Lafite Rothschild of teas") as well as tisanes, which are teas made not from tea leaves but from flowers, herbs, and spices. Recipes range from Southern-Style Iced Tea--a basic formula of tea, water, and sugar--to Teatotaler's Sangria, which combines chilled green tea with peaches, oranges, and other fresh fruits. Other notable concoctions include the tropically tinged Bimini Island Iced Tea; Cha Yen, or Thai Iced Tea, which uses condensed and evaporated milk; and the classic Sweet Tea, whose main ingredient is sugar--and lots of it. ("A visitor to the South once said that it made his teeth hurt," writes the author.) There's also a section of mixed alcoholic drinks.

"Tea is the world's second most popular beverage, after water," says Thompson, and it has noted health benefits; its consumption has been linked to lower instances of cancer and strokes. Iced Tea should help readers pursue good health--and have a delicious time doing it. --Andy Boynton

Fred Thompson's "Iced Tea" is a small and likeable volume filled with not only recipes, but everything you ever wanted to know about this summertime drink. He covers everything from the rules and techniques for brewing a great glass of tea (from which a great glass of ICED tea may be made) to what other countries like to serve in their iced tea glasses.

I learned quite a bit from this slim volume. For instance, why Southerners like their "sweet tea" so sweet (read the book to find out!) and how tea can be used in a fantastically good smoothie (again, read the book!). This would make a lovely hostess gift for some summer weekend at the beach!

                    Book Description

This report was created for global strategic planners who cannot be content with traditional methods of segmenting world markets. With the advent of a “borderless world”, cities become a more important criteria in prioritizing markets, as opposed to regions, continents, or countries. This report covers the top 2000 cities in over 200 countries. It does so by reporting the estimated market size (in terms of latent demand) for each major city of the world. It then ranks these cities and reports them in terms of their size as a percent of the country where they are located, their geographic region (e.g. Africa, Asia, Europe, Middle East, North America, Latin America), and the total world market. In performing various economic analyses for its clients, I have been occasionally asked to investigate the market potential for various products and services across cities. The purpose of the studies is to understand the density of demand within a country and the extent to which a city might be used as a point of distribution within its region. From an economic perspective, however, a city does not represent a population within rigid geographical boundaries. To an economist or strategic planner, a city represents an area of dominant influence over markets in adjacent areas. This influence varies from one industry to another, but also from one period of time to another. In what follows, I summarize the economic potential for the world\'s major cities for "bottled iced tea" for the year 2007. The goal of this report is to report my findings on the real economic potential, or what an economist calls the latent demand, represented by a city when defined as an area of dominant influence. The reader needs to realize that latent demand may or may not represent real sales. For many items, latent demand is clearly observable in sales, as in the case for food or housing items. Consider, however, the category "satellite launch vehicles". Clearly, there are no launch pads in most cities of the world. However, the core benefit of the vehicles (e.g. telecommunications, etc.) is "consumed" by residents or industries within the world\'s cities. Without certain cities, in other words, the market for satellite launch vehicles would be lower for the world in general. One needs to allocate, therefore, a portion of the worldwide economic demand for launch vehicles to both regions and cities. This report takes the broader definition and considers, therefore, a city as a part of the global market.

                        Book Description

This study covers the latent demand outlook for bottled iced tea across the regions of Greater China, including provinces, autonomous regions (Guangxi, Nei Mongol, Ningxia, Xinjiang, Xizang - Tibet), municipalities (Beijing, Chongqing, Shanghai, and Tianjin), special administrative regions (Hong Kong and Macau), and Taiwan (all hereafter referred to as “regions”). Latent demand (in millions of U.S. dollars), or potential industry earnings (P.I.E.) estimates are given across some 1,100 cities in Greater China. For each major city in question, the percent share the city is of the region and of Greater China is reported. Each major city is defined as an area of “economic population”, as opposed to the demographic population within a legal geographic boundary. For many cities, the economic population is much larger that the population within the city limits; this is especially true for the cities of the Western regions. For the coastal regions, cities which are close to other major cities or which represent, by themselves, a high percent of the regional population, actual city-level population is closer to the economic population (e.g. in Beijing). Based on this “economic” definition of population, comparative benchmarks allow the reader to quickly gauge a city’s marketing and distribution value vis-à-vis others. This exercise is quite useful for persons setting up distribution centers or sales force strategies. Using econometric models which project fundamental economic dynamics within each region and city of influence, latent demand estimates are created for bottled iced tea. This report does not discuss the specific players in the market serving the latent demand, nor specific details at the product level. The study also does not consider short-term cyclicalities that might affect realized sales. The study, therefore, is strategic in nature, taking an aggregate and long-run view, irrespective of the players or products involved.
