Book Description
This is the first complete biography of the outstanding Russian general and diplomat Count N. P. Ignat'ev (1832-1908) who negotiated the important treaties of Beijing and San Stefano. The book focuses on his brilliant career in Central Asia as a leading player in the "Great Game", China and especially as ambassador in Constantinople, 1864-77, where he acquired the monikers "the Vice-Sultan" for his powerful position there and "Father of Lies" for his alleged tendency to tell fibs (a reputation here reassessed).
Book Description
During their lifetimes, Alfred Russel Wallace and Charles Darwin shared credit and fame for the independent and near-simultaneous discovery of natural selection. Together, the two men spearheaded one of the greatest intellectual revolutions in modern history, and their rivalry, usually amicable but occasionally acrimonious, forged modern evolutionary theory. Yet today, few people today know much about Wallace.
The Heretic in Darwin's Court explores the controversial life and scientific contributions of Alfred Russel Wallace -- Victorian traveler, scientist, spiritualist, and co-discoverer with Charles Darwin of natural selection. After examining his early years, the biography turns to Wallace's twelve years of often harrowing travels in the western and eastern tropics, which place him in the pantheon of the greatest explorer-naturalists of the nineteenth century. Tracing step-by-step his discovery of natural selection -- a piece of scientific detective work as revolutionary in its implications as the discovery of the structure of DNA -- the book then follows the remaining fifty years of Wallace's eccentric and entertaining life. In addition to his divergence from Darwin on two fundamental issues -- sexual selection and the origin of the human mind -- he pursued topics that most scientific figures of his day conspicuously avoided, including spiritualism, phrenology, mesmerism, environmentalism, and life on Mars.
Although there may be disagreement about his conclusions, Wallace's intellectual investigations into the origins of life, consciousness, and the universe itself remain some of the most inspired scientific accomplishments in history. This authoritative biography casts new light on the life and work of Alfred Russel Wallace and the importance of his twenty-five-year relationship with Charles Darwin.

A. R. Wallace as he really was........2007-01-09
This is by far the best of several recent biographies of Wallace. As a biographer myself, it is hard for me to grasp how Dr. Totten, as a physician, ever found the time to do the meticulous research for this book. While it contains a wealth of end notes, the narrative does not make difficult reading. The author does not insert his own biases in his treatment of the portion of the book that deals in Wallace's spiritualiam.
Should it be called the Darwin-Wallace Theory?.......2006-04-19
The story of Darwin's voyage around the world in the Beagle is well known. He used his observations and the time (you have a lot of time on a sailing ship) to develop the basics of the theory of evolution. After his return to England, he wrote up his findings but did not publish them.
Wallace spent a long time making similar observations, but was haunted by ill fortune. For instance his collection of specimens laboriously collected was being shipped to England when the ship they were on caught fire, and the specimens were lost.
Wallace's thoughts though were running along similar lines with that of Darwin. When he was getting ready to publish people told Darwin that his theories were about to be published by Wallace. Darwin then rushed his theory into print and now the theory is Darwin's theory rather than Wallace's theory.
What isn't very well known is that Darwin and Wallace were able to then work together for many years to further develop the theory. Perhaps a better name would be the Darwin-Wallace theory.
This is a very well written addition to the literature and Dr. Slotten's obvious dedication comes through.
Wallace's breakthrough...followed by Darwin.......2004-09-09
The place of Wallace in the rise of modern evolutionary theory and its confusions is always a contentious one, and the record shows the persistent, but let us hope, not permament distortion of the facts of the case. The record should show that Wallace produced the first version of what Darwin later got credit for. It's that simple, and any honest profession would move to correct the injustice. But not here, the stakes are too high, and the agenda too ambitious to allow that to happen.
The facts speak for themselves and all biographers tend to 'fumble' the ball here. No fumble at all, it is a fixed necessity of compromise with the Darwin propaganda machine. Let us grant the excesses of some claims that Darwin plagiarized Wallace. Even so the sleight of hand pulled off by Darwin and his gang as to the Ternate paper should be a minimum charge against the paradigm dogmatists here.
This useful and always interesting new biography of Wallace, in a recent slew of such, manages reasonably well to navigate the fudge that occurs here in all cases except those in the wake of Brackman's A Delicate Arrangement which attempted an expose of the great cover story here.
In many ways, this issue of Darwin's rigged priority apart, this is one of the best of the genre and fills in a lot of gaps, especially as to the later Wallace with his ventures into spiritualism. Current scientism finds spiritualism silly superstition. No doubt this is the case, but the false reductionism of Darwinism in action is no less silly and totally fails to grapple with the far greater complexity of man known for millennia. It dawned on Wallace that the methodology emerging couldn't possibly constitute a theory of man's evolution and the way it has totally amputated its subject matter in the regime of brainwashing that has taken over the subject. In a context where to even mention a Buddhist sutra is to be called an irrationalist the true 'evolutionary psychology' of man has become almost a taboo subject. These tactics will come to a bad end sooner or later, and at that point the dissent of Wallace on the evolutionary emergence of man will come into its own again against the false reputation of that iconic imposter, Charles Darwin frantic for his priority at the receipt of the Ternate letter.
More Wallace.......2004-08-05
Ross Slotten's new biography of Alfred Russel Wallace (1823-1913) continues where others have left off. There has now been at least one full-length biographical study of Wallace published each year since 2000, plus several anthologies and other works. Clearly, Wallace is starting to "get his due." But there is yet much to do, and this latest biography demonstrates this point well.
Slotten is an amateur investigator, and this work was obviously a labor of love. But he's put a good deal of effort into his study, along the way uncovering new archival sources that shed further light on Wallace's many contacts over his long life. So, the reader will find further new things here, even if he or she has already digested the recent excellent studies by Peter Raby, Michael Shermer, and Martin Fichman. Slotten writes well, provides enough historical context to keep things interesting, and only occasionally is factually inaccurate (for example, in some of the chronology he offers for the period of Wallace's adoption of spiritualism, circa 1865-1866).
On the other hand, his efforts sometimes cross over into ill-advised opinion and elaboration. One thing he plays a bit too much on is Wallace's status as an outsider to the intellectual community of his time: the "poor Wallace" line (in relation to his dealings with Darwin, and everyone else). Actually, though Wallace was in fact an outsider, the real story of his life is how little such matters seemed to affect his thought process: when it came to the world of ideas, he was just about as fearless a thinker as we have had. Slotten does a rather poor job of exposing this side--the really important one--of Wallace, and to this extent does just about nothing to expand our knowledge of his world view past the status quo.
But for someone as unusual as Wallace, one cannot ask for everything at once. We should be happy for a well-written, well-researched, and admirably detailed accounting of a very interesting man's life, and continue to hope that future treatments will reach more and more into just what made Wallace tic, and how we in our time can make use of that information.
The "Indiana Jones" of Evolution.......2004-07-03
This book was recommended by a friend. It's a great read, and would make a great action movie. I dimly remembered someone simultaneously developing a theory of evolution with Darwin. After reading this book, I don't know why Wallace isn't more famous than Darwin. He was certainly more interesting. He was self-made, from London's lower classes; trecked around the jungles of South America and the Pacific islands; was involved in a shipwreck; was recognized by England's most prestigious scientific societies; got involved in unpopular social causes and ended up going to seances and visiting mediums. This cost him him his hard-won scientific standing in Victorian London, but that didn't seem to phase him; he had moved on intellectually. He is a fascinating and colorful character. The author doesn't try to explain away the contradictions, but lets Wallace emerge as what he is -- a complexs and enigmatic, and ultimately very sympathetic figure. The book is also a fascinating study of Victorian England. It also contains a very lucid discussion of the thought process that led to the theory of evolution, which becomes almost a sub-plot, with its own heros and villains. This author writes in a clear, lucid prose, and lets his opinion occasionally show through, but generally plays it straight. The scholarship is impressive, but you aren't overwhelmed by it. The author keeps a critical distance from the character, so the portrayal feels ultimately balanced. If you are looking for a good biography, this is a book you should relish.

A Bit Weird in Spots..........2007-07-24
I just got this book today. It's a great idea, a sports injury handbook organized by bodypart **and** sport, but right off the bat, while browsing, I notice a few oddities: on page 221, Dr. Levy claims "exercise machines require you to lift too much weight," which is weird because one can certainly adjust the resistance on most any exercise machine out there -- and he makes that statement while advising free weights! Any bodybuilder or powerlifter knows that it is typically harder to use free weights than a machine: for example, dumbbell curls are much harder than machine biceps curls at the same weight. Also, on page 17 there is an illustration of the behind-the-neck pull-up, which is potentially more dangerous for some people than the regular front-of-the-neck type of pull-up. That's a very strange thing to see in a book on sports injuries! Though it's not exactly a dangerous movement, it does place the rotator cuff at greater risk of injury, especially for people who might have weak muscles and tendons there to begin with. The regular pull-up works the same muscles just as well, but without that slightly higher risk of injury.
I hope I don't find any other strange advice or illustrations in this book....
Appropriate to the athlete.......2002-10-26
I have not read this book, but the reviews indicate it is for the current athlete with an injury. One reviewer unfairly slammed Marilyn Moffat's book since it was not right for him. I read and evaluated her Physical Therapy book from the library as a guide for my 84 year old father. He was a super fit elderly sculler who wore out his beach volleyball playing granddaughters double sculling for 2 hours at a shot, and was in the hospital for 14 months recovering from surgery to reduce intracranial bleeding, which was followed by seizures, pneumonia, and kidney failure. He essentially woke up a year later a live but terribly weak shadow of himself. He needs rehabilitation from, literally zero strength. He is learning to walk, talk, and eat, and more. He's gone from feeling like 40 to feeling like a hundred, but with no long slide of good memories. Very discouraging. Her book will help me start him back to a pleasant final years, from a zero base. I will buy that book to help him. I may be able to use this book for myself, but he could not.
Exactly what I needed . . ........2002-10-05
An excellent book. At the age of 40 I pay for my active lifestyle with some aches and pains; this book is helping me live pain free. Unlike many PT type books, Levy is specific with his advice, not making you waste your time on dozens of stretches and exercises. He'll lead you directly to what you need to know to fix the problem. Other books seem shy about recommending specific exercises for specific problems; Levy's not. I ordered several of these types of books at once and eventually resold all the others. This is the one I kept.
EXCEPTIONAL MATERIAL ON FITNESS & SPORTS INJURIES.......2000-03-28
Alan Levy has done a fantastic job in putting together so much in one book. It has nearly everything an athlete requires to not only stay in shape but also treating all kinds of injuries from little niggles to those that need surgery. And its all been bonded together in a very organized and methodical manner.
To begin with Dr. Levy emphasizes the importance of warming up and stretching before and after workouts and shows how to do this. Next, he explains about nutrition for athletes. After that he lays out the benefits of and what it really means to stay healthy. This is followed by First-Aid for sports.
Starting with the fifth chapter he provides detailed information about what to know about the various parts of the body, their intricacies, and how they are used in sports and precisely what occurs with them when we feel pain or discomfort. For example, chapter 10 is about the Thigh and Hip, Chapter 6 for the Shoulder, and so on. In addition, he suggests various ways of diagnosing injuries correctly and how best to treat them. Whether an economical ready-made arch support will work, or one must see a qualified physician for a particular problem, Dr. Levy seems one not to miss a trick.
Then there is a chapter each on a specific sport and the most likely injuries to take place in every one of those and what all can be done to prevent them but if they do happen, then how to treat them. From Baseball to Running, Golf to Skiing, it has everything.
At the end he also suggests what to look for in a Sports Specialist.
Its only drawback is that understanding some of the material can be a daunting task as the lay person does not possess the expertise of Dr. Levy in Sports medicine.
And last but not the least, my knee ailment got cured courtesy of following the treatment plan outlined in the Sports Injury Handbook.

Very good reference on the subject.......2007-07-14
If you are interested in this book, there is a good probability you are a pretty good player of middle age. In your youth your body felt invulnerable. You could play all day long injure free. Now, with a full life and little exercise during the working week you are facing an onslaught of tennis injuries. This is the fate of zillions of former high school and college players.
The title of the book alone reminds one how tasking tennis is on aging joints. You won't find similar books related to surfing, swimming , or biking. All these sports are associated with very smooth motions absent of any shock on the joints. But, tennis is just the opposite.
The book serves as an encyclopedia of all the injuries you could potentially face playing tennis. The author being an M.D. specializing in sports medicine does an excellent job in imparting information about diagnostic, prevention, and treatment for each one of them. Explanations of exercises are very clear associated with precise drawings that leaves no doubt about what you should be doing.
I am just in the midst of nursing an Achilles tendon and plantar fasciitis. The author has provided me all the info I need to treat these conditions. I am doing the related exercises. And, I am already feeling much better. In probably just a few weeks, I should be able to get back on the courts reasonably safely.
For your own sake, I hope you don't need this book. But, if you do don't hesitate getting it. I think it is excellent in imparting information on sport medicine that your typical general practitioner won't know.
Tennis Injury Handbook Review.......2007-01-10
Excellent book. Concise and accurate. I've used it multiple times and refer to it often as needed. Well worth the price.
Tennis Injury Handbook.......2006-08-19
My son is a 13 year old tennis player that's moving up the rankings ladder by playing alot of matches and practice. With that comes many different injuries. This book has given him the information he needs and has helped him learn the exercises that will make him a stronger player and "hopefully" keep him injury free. He has taken a tremendous interest in "Tennis Injury Handbook". Anything that keeps him reading and playing is great in my eyes!
Jack of all Trades ..........2003-01-15
This is a general book that attempts to cover all types of tennis ailments in about 180 pages. Needless to say, if you have a specific problem you'll find it wanting since it will devote only a few pages to your problem.
That said it does do a good job of providing general information and provides excercises to help condition and prevent future injuries. The description of some of the exercises are not too clear and it doesn't really go into specifics on how to do the excercises properly.
Good Advice and Help with Tennis Injuries.......2000-04-27
I recently came back to tennis after years of not playing. When I played when I was younger, I never had any injuries and never really thought about it. Now, I'm over forty, playing regularly in a tennis league and all of a sudden injuries are here to stay. Reading this book really helped me both with preparing before I play and dealing with those little aches and pains afterward. The book is easy to read and organized so that you can find what you're looking for quickly. Now I spend more time on warming up using exercise suggestions from the book to avoid injury. But, if I do get injured I know I can refer to the Tennis Injury Handbook for good advice to help get me back playing. I recommend this book for all tennis players, especially those weekend warriors and league players who want to stay fit and healthy to keep on playing.

An ounce of prevention..........2000-04-07
This book is the best book I've ever read on golf related injuries. This book is a must for anyone who wants to enjoy playing golf for a lifetime. This book not only prescribes treatment for existing injuries, but also gives valuable advice on how to avoid them. Pick it up.
Average on basics, weak on prevention.......1999-12-16
My impression was a review of what I have heard from each therapist I've visited such as ice, stretch it, strengthen it. If I had never head that advice, I would find the book better than 2 stars.

ServSafe Coursebook - disappointed.......2006-03-15
I am very disappointed in this purchase. The only reason that I bought this book was to receive the NEW Scantron test! The Scantron test that arrived with the book was the OLD test. All information at the Amazon site said that the new test was included. That information was in error.

ServSafe Coursebook .......2006-03-11
I am really pleased with the book i purchased. I needed to find the book fast for my class because it was the middle of week one and i had no book because the college bookstore was sold out. So, i tried online to find the best rates with fast delievery and found it here at Amazon.com. Wooo! I was so happy to have found the book i needed onine with the Scantron Certificatiion Exam form included. I was in the need for next day delievery and they had that option available. My total came out to $93.83 with next day shipping fee included. That was a pretty reasonable price for me compared to other prices i've seen which would have been way over $100 dollars. I am very happy with the book and with the speedy next day delivery and also with how Amazon.com kept sending me confirmation emails and how i could tract my shipment order. I was very much pleased, which moves me to trust them and to purchase from them again in the future! Thanks Thanks Thanks Amazon.com!
A little dumbed-down, but an important book........2006-02-24
This book was a required book for a sanitation class at my community college. Although some of the chapters are kind of silly ("The Safe Food Handler" - don't pee in the food, wash hands at work, don't get hair in product), the book does go over all of the basics very clearly and informitavley. The text comes with a scantron sheet that can allow you to take a certification test graded by the National Restaurant Association. The certificate is a MUST when applying to kitchens and hotels. The book is a bit pricey for the information it carries, and if you do not need the certification for your job or education, consider buying the book in either an older edition, or used.
Servsafe Coursebook.......2006-02-20
I bought this book for my Food Microbiology and Sanitation class. It was originally $91 in my bookstore and I think about $79 on amazon.com. It's a pretty simple book, the book and certification exam is written on an 8th grade level.
The book (on amazon) comes with the exam sheet inside.
And that's about all, folks.
