Louis Pasteur was more than just a man; in the words of his latest biographer he was "a living symbol, embodying both science and France." That's a pretty heavy assessment, but coming from respected French immunologist Patrice Debre, it's certainly credible. Written for the centenary of Pasteur's death, this book is a comprehensive, insightful examination of his life and work, made far more interesting and accessible by the author's natural flair for describing the details of scientific research with simple, compelling prose.
Though it is fashionable to undermine the posthumous reputations of our heroes (and many have gone to work on Pasteur), Debre finds greater value in acknowledging Pasteur's obstinacy and possible data fudging within the much-broader context of the man's incredibly successful working life. By his insistence on practically applying science to real problems, he helped further France's silk and wine industries and greatly reduced the harm of such diseases as anthrax, cholera, and rabies. With all that--and more--to his credit, it seems hardly worthwhile to complain that he may have predetermined some of his experimental results or harbored unreasonable anti-German sentiments, and Debre refuses to judge Pasteur on anything less than his entire life. On that scale, his heroism is beyond doubt. --Rob Lightner
Book Description
Distinguished French immunologist and physician Patrice Debré offers an extensive, balanced, and detailed account of Louis Pasteur's life, struggles, and contributions. Drawing heavily on Pasteur's own scientific notebooks and writings, Debré presents a complete critical account of his discoveries and the controversies they raised with other scientists and occasionally with his closest associates.
Customer Reviews:
Louis Pasteur by Partice Debre; translated by Elborg Forster.......2005-12-31
I found the English translation so interesting that I could not put it down. I wish the book had been available when I started my own education. The author does an excellent job of relating the research of Pasteur to his historical setting. Pasteur was the model scientist and the author reveals this on page after page. This book should be required reading for students interested in any aspect of science. A well-worn copy of this book should be on the shelf of anyone interested in pursuing a career in science.

The Superhero Scientist.......2004-04-05
This is the true story of how a stubborn, compassionate, patriotic genius saves France -- and the world -- from disease and disaster time and again.
Louis Pasteur developed the vaccine for rabies and discovered the mystery of how anthrax was spread. These discoveries saved countless lives. He also saved the world an unknowable fortune with his discoveries that saved the French silk and wine industries. His method of heating food to prevent spoilage, pasteurization, revolutionized nearly every aspect of growing, shipping, and preparing food and drink.
The science involved in these profound discoveries can be complicated, but Ackerman presents them clearly and in an interesting, readable way.
We get to know the many sides of Pastuer, the driven scientist, the struggling student (who is also courting his future wife, Marie) the grief-strickn father, (He loses three of his children to disease)and the great and honored hero-scientist.
We come away from the book with a new understanding of microbiology and the man who founded it.
Book Description
n 1856, when Louis Pasteur first began studying microbes in rotten sugarbeet juice, he put into motion a chain of events that saved France's wine industry, and revolutionized medicine and biology.

A must when teaching kids about bacteria..........2007-06-28
Pasteur's Fight Against Microbes is a good way to introduce the subject of bacteria to children. Even when the book explains many facts meant for elementary kids, I think it can be read to kids as young as four. My 4y/o loved the story and the illustrations.
Nice Book.......2006-07-01
I especailly like the illustrations. Content is good too. I wish the author had included something of Pasteur's Christian faith, as is was a great factor in his confident and untiring search for answers to the mysteries puzzling him.
Great book for science kids.......2000-11-11
My son loved this book. I read it to him, then found him reading it to himself the next day. He found it very exciting. Great for kids interested in science. Gives science a human face.
Product Description
Louis Pasteurs sharp, analytical mind and life-long devotion to science made him one of the best-known scientific researchers of all time. He was, said one historical writer, The most perfect man who has ever entered the Kingdom of Science. Today we remember Pasteur as the father of microbiology, the founder of bacteriology and the father of modern medicine. Pasteurs method of developing vaccines continues to help humans as well as animals conquer sickness and disease. His prepared mind saved Frances wine and silk worm industries from the microorganisms that threatened to destroy both. His method of reducing harmful bacteria in milk and other foods has saved countless human lives over the years. Pasteur was one of the first to fight for sanitary practices in hospitals. His ground-breaking germ theory of disease continues to provide the foundation upon which we base our modern-day ideas of disease. In many ways, Louis Pasteur was truly a fighter against! contagious disease.

Book Description
Pasteur's stunning career has attracted a host of biographies, but this book, written by a distinguished French-born microbiologist, is among the best. Dubos displays a deep appreciation for the power and enduring significance of Pasteur's scientific work. His graceful writing style allows him to convey the excitement and significance of even the most technical aspects of Pasteur's work. Now, updated to the present day by the distinguished microbiologist, Thomas D. Brock, the book also has a new forward by Pasteur scholar Gerald L. Geison that places the book in historical context. More than forty illustrations and tables have been added, as well as a glossary and additional text. For high school and college undergraduate students, as well as the general reader, this is the ideal introduction to the life of Louis Pasteur.

Louis Pasteur: Founder of Modern Medicine (Sowers.) (Sowers.)

Book Description
Can Louis Pasteur's dog vaccine save young Joseph Meister from a horrible death from rabies? Or will the boy die in spite of Pasteur's efforts and put the scientist at risk of being hanged for murder? Beginning with this pivotal scene, Louis Pasteur traces the story of Pasteur's career, including his amazing discovery that germs cause disease and his development of vaccines for rabies and anthax. It is because of his theories, work, and courage that the vaccines we benefit from today exist at all. Readers will be mesmerized by the true story of "killer germs" and the dedicated man who fought them single-handedly.
Customer Reviews:
Model introduction to science.......2000-06-04
Very enjoyable. A clear and enthralling presentation of an exciting discovery. The real difficulty experienced by Louis Pasteur's contemporaries in comprehending the danger of from an almost invisible source is particularly well drawn. The resources section is also very useful and leads to other intriguing scientific subjects.
Thumbs up for "Louis Pasteur: Hunting Killer Germs".......2000-05-18
As an adult in the education field, I found this book not only engrossing and suspenseful, but informative, well-structured and clear. It's a fantastic and painless introduction to Pasteur and to the history of medicine, told in an engaging narrative that is bound to inspire both boys and girls alike. I liked it so much I donated a copy to the local library.

Excellent book!.......2007-09-19
I enjoyed this book very much. It kept my attention throughout it. There were so many things that I didn't know about Pasteur. This book covered it all. I am interested in people who discover the cure for diseases. Pasteur found a lot of cures. Too bad we don't have him around now. He could use his help.
Knowledge is Power.......2007-01-09
This is a great book for every age.
It tells a story that most of us have
forgot, a very important story. It's
easy reading, interesting and relevant.

Customer Reviews:
This is the most poorly written book I have ever read.......2004-01-20
I completely disagree with the editorial review of this book. It was dry and boring, and Reynolds recounted the deaths of Pasteur's daughters with as much emotion as she described a chemical reaction. Reynolds did not tell this story "succinctly and accessibly." It was such a chore to read that I began to read it aloud (I had to read it for a school assignment) and my mother and brother couldn't bear to hear it and screamed for me to stop. My father got the book Microbe Hunters out of our local library and I read that as a supplement. It covered virtually the same material as Reynolds attempted to write about, only it was far more compelling, vivid, and easier to read.

Customer Reviews:
Informative and easy to read.......2007-05-31
This book has helped me to understand the different types of thyroid diseases better. I'm very glad that it also lay out the risks of certain surgery that some doctors do not highlight. It is written in a manner that is easy to read and not heavy as compare to scientific books.
Very Informative.......2006-08-21
This is a really go book for anyone who doesn't know anything about thyroid conditions/diseases. I have had some experience with thyroid problems in the past so a lot of the information contained in the book was not new to me. The best part about the book is that you get detailed information without all the medical jargon. The author is very clear and descriptive about the different types of thyroid conditions, symptoms, common medical treatments, etc. I purchased it because I was hoping for more information on weight management and diet for tyroid patients. Although the book touches on this topic it was not as detailed as I would have liked. Otherwise, I would recommend this book as a guide to walk you through the maze of medical terms and to sort out some of the fact from fiction.
Nothing new here.......2006-05-27
Why did McGraw-Hill publish this book? It is almost identical (verbatim) to The Complete Thyroid Book except that the latter book includes some additional information. Both books were published in 2005.
I agree with the reviewers that mention how basic this book is. If you're new to learning about thyroid conditions and their treatment, The Complete Thyroid Book is a good starting point. Otherwise check out this book or The Complete Thyroid Book from the library and maybe you'll discover a few helpful tidbits.
Extremely Informative.......2006-03-22
I bought this book after a tough year of thyroid ups and downs. It has empowered me to understand and ask the right questions for a change. So informative but on a level that anyone can understand. After reading my copy, I bought one for my sister, who also has thyroid problems. Her mother-in-law saw it and bought two more copies for friends. Its great for family members of hyper-hypo- thyroid too. It will increase thier understaning. I bought a few books and this was the best, by far!
Thyroid Sourcebook by Rosenthal.......2004-01-22
This is an excellent book which describes classic thyroid
problems and a variety of solutions. Goitrogens are contained
in cabbage, cauliflower, turnips, almonds and fiber.
People living in North America get natural iodine
in their diets. The thyroid makes T3 and T4 cells. The
parathyroid controls calcium regulation. Hyperthyroidism
produces anxiety, diarrhea, easy bruising, increased gland
size, eye problems, exhaustion, heat intolerance and
palpitations, infertility, menstrual changes, muscle weakness,
paralysis and tremors. Hypothyroidism causes cardio changes,
cold intolerance, digestive changes, fatigue, muscle cramps, numbness and autoimmune deficiencies. The Endocrine Society
is listed at 4350 East West Hwy. -Suite 500 Bethesda MD 20814-4410 at Tel 301-941-0200
Overall, this work is excellent for anyone desiring quality
information on the functioning of the thyroid gland. It should
be in every personal health library.

great chicken recipes.......2006-07-19
I bought this book at my bookstore about a month ago. I have tried several of the recipes and they are easy to do and delicious. The paella, the chicken with carmelized onions are the most recent ones.
The ingredients are (usually) easy to get, the recipes simple to follow and the results are wonderful. Highly recommend.
