Arleigh Burke is considered the father of the modern U.S. Navy to many. During World War II a lot of good men rose to the top from relatively low levels when the war started. Arleigh Burke started the war as a commander on shore duty at the Washington Navy Yard, also known as the Naval Gun Factory. His superior officer refused to let him go.
Eventually he got orders to go to the South Pacific, it had been twenty years since he had graduated from the Naval Academy. From there his career skyrocketed. Twenty years younger than Nimitz/Halsey he was the most famous Naval officer in active service after the war. He eventually became Chief of Naval Operations under Eisenhower. He was the CNO for an unprecedented six years.
The author of this book served in the Navy during World War II, and afterwards was a civilian faculty member of the Naval Academy. His biographies of Nimitz and Halsey won numerous awards and was selected by Burke and some of his friends as biographer. Admiral Burke, by then unable to read because of failing eyesight, listened to the book as it was read by his wife and assisted in the correction of errors.
This book is well written and brings interesting insight not only to the story of World War II, but of the political happenings afterward when Truman wanted to unify the services in an attempt to do away with the inter-service rivalry.

Arleigh Burke might have been a great Destroyerman, but there has got to be a better book than this one. It is not written as history, it seems more like a book written by a journalist weaving back and forth between boring background trivia of an antiquated style (it details how ship commanders met their future wives at Annapolis) and an inordinate amount of time promoting Commodore Burke as God's gift to Destroyer combat. The details of combat Pre-Burke around Guadalcanal are well written but short. There are no references to information gathered from Japanese sources. Indeed, by the time Burke gets to actually fight the enemy they are a worn out, demoralized bunch, constatnly under air attack and on the retreat down the Slot. This book makes no effort to balance its view of Burke's successful doctrine of ship combat with the affects of poor logistics, poor maintenance, poor leadership, and overwhelming air superiority on his Japanese adverseries which are surely important subjects even as background to the final battles of the Solomon's Campaign.

This was the last work of Boehme, a most humble mystic, this was his interpretation of the Book of Genesis that also considers the message of the New Testament and the true nature of mystical experience.

I found this book helpful at summarizing big, complex ideas. However, there were several instances in which I felt this book did not fully explain what I wanted to know. At those times, I had to go to the large, hardback book this short summary comes from (Casarett & Doull's Toxicology: The Science of Poisons). However, this book was much cheaper and, most of the time, very helpful.

Log Cabin Cooking by Barbara Swell, a book about Pioneer Recipes & Food Lore, is a wonderful book that can be enjoyed by anybody. With only 64 pages it is amazingly full of recipes, food history, kitchen proverbs, dining etiquette, rhymes (designed to help you remember recipes) and even food insults. From wheat to corn, from meats to beverages, from how to make your butter yellow and how many ways to use corn (corn, corn, corn) this is a great read.
It only took me a day yet I wanted more. Just my luck I bought Secrets of The Great Old-Timey Cooks by the author at the same time at the same store.
With 19th century photos and drawings to add to the pioneer feeling of the book. Don't read it unless you plan to go out right afterwards to eat good, old fashion, country cooking!

This book is very good for the beginner in Early American cooking. I feel very sorry for people are afraid to try some of Barbara's recipes. The other things in her book are true to fact and most of them do work. I do E-A living demonstrations an this book will help me a lot. 3 thumbs up or what ever!
