Book Description
Women, Art, and Spirituality: The Poor Clares of Early Modern Italy situates the art made between the thirteenth and sixteenth centuries for the Franciscan nuns in its historical and religious contexts. Evaluating its production from sociological and intellectual perspectives, this study also addresses the discourse among spirituality, devotional practices, and aesthetic attitudes as formalized in the construction and decoration of the women's convents and in their didactic literature.

If you're the kind of person who'd rather read the telephone directory than a software manual, Adobe Photoshop 6.0 Classroom in a Book could be just what you need to get a grip on the latest version of the world's best image-editing software.
Seventeen project-based lessons take you through every aspect of Photoshop. The book starts with the basics--the revamped interface, selection tools, and working with layers--and then moves on to more involved projects like retouching, using the new vector shape and clipping path features, advanced layer management, and special effects. Each lesson begins with a clear introduction and finishes with a brief review section, which is a good way of assessing how much you've learned and whether you need to go over anything again.
Anyone who is, or wants to be, a Photoshop pro must eventually tackle color management, and two lessons are devoted to this difficult subject. "Setting Up Your Monitor for Color Management" examines the principles of color management and shows you how to calibrate and create an ICC color profile for your monitor using the Adobe Gamma control panel. "Producing and Printing Consistent Color" deals with proofing images on a CMYK PostScript printer and creating color separations for commercial printing. There's also a chapter devoted to spot-color printing. The remainder of the book deals with producing Web graphics using ImageReady 3.0.
While it lacks the depth of some of the other Photoshop tomes, this is probably one of the most effective courses there is for beginners and intermediate users. --Ken McMahon, Amazon.co.uk

Where the lesson is leading isn't clear from the beginning.......2005-08-11
If there are those out there who have read: "Adobe Photoshop 6.0 Classroom in a Book" ISBN 0-201-71016-1
and disliked it as much as I did, please submit reviews of better books you've found.
I got the impression that, that book tried it's best to make sure you had very little idea of what the lesson was leading up to until the very last sentence. The problem with this method is that it makes understanding and following the lesson much more difficult because you have little idea of what it's leading up to.
Using it as a reference is pretty much impossible. You can't just pick up the book and go to a point of interest and learn that topic. It seems like you have to start at the beginning of the book just to get the sence of something in the middle or end of the book. Frankly, what a piece of crap. Thanks for any recommendations.
An Excellent Teacher.......2004-10-21
When I first picked up Adobe Photoshop 6.0, I almost gave up on it because I had no idea how it worked. Instead I searched around for a book to teach me how to use it. Well, Photoshop 6.0 Classroom in a Book was the right one to chose! Simple, step by step lessons teach you about each feature of 6.0. If you're brand new to Photoshop, this book will make you an expert!
Good for "How?" not "Why?" or "What?".......2003-03-25
If you want the practice and need a step-by-step lesson, this is a good book. I did want the step-by-step practice, and I'm still glad I bought the book. However, it only tells you what to do. It's not very good at explaining why you're doing it or what exactly the overall effect will be. Also, any tool, filter, etc. that you don't learn about in the lessons, you don't really learn about at all. I think it's a great book for practice, but it's probably best used in conjunction with another book that doesn't have lessons but gives a better explanation of the tools, what they do, and when and why to use them. An example is probably Photoshop 6 For Dummies. I haven't bought it yet, but I've looked through it, and I think it will be helpful if used along with Classroom in a Book.
An Excellent starting point.......2003-02-19
First, let me say that it is very easy to pick apart any book that attempts to introduce a beginner to such a complex application program as Photoshop6. I am not an expert on Photoshop but I have invested a lot of time and money learning how to use it effectively in web development. This is an very cost effective approach to learning some of the useful features that Photoshop offers to the artist both in the Print media and the electronic web pallet.
Just remember this is starting point Photoshop is an life long pursuit if you are trying produce original quality work. If you can find a good copy used. It will be a reference book that you will continue to use years after you complete the exercises in it.
Good Book.......2002-07-14
I found this book to be a good solid hands-on "text-book". The hands-on lessons made sense. The lessons explained what you were doing as you were doing it. This enabled you to really learn the information so that you would be able to fully utilize all the features of photoshop. Although I don't feel the lessons about the web uses of photoshop were as thorough, I had a good enough grasp of photoshop it took very little effort on my part to figure it out. This is the best book you can find explaining how to use photoshop you can find.

This book is part of Adobe's official training and certification program and assumes readers have completed Adobe Photoshop 6.0 and Adobe Illustrator 9.0 Classroom in a Book, or have an equivalent skill level. Like the other books in the series, it comprises a set of step-by-step intensive and detailed tutorials meant to be carried out on the computer as the reader follows the text (lesson files are on the CD-ROM). The more advanced skills covered include compositing and masking, mastering pen tools, typography and layout, and preparing art for print or the Web. By including both Photoshop and Illustrator projects in one book, readers can learn the pros and cons of using either one for different tasks.
Each project begins with a list of goals, what skill level is preferred, and roughly how long the tutorial should take to complete. Despite the preferred skill prerequisites, one of the advantages of this carefully written Classroom in a Book is that less advanced readers will still be able to follow along with the deliberately paced projects. The rationale behind each step is clearly explained, and sidebars go into even greater detail on related issues (for example, "Specifying knockout options" appears alongside the lesson on working with masks).
For readers who prepare art for offset printing, this book explains how the new color management in Photoshop 6 works by going over the production workflow for a hypothetical printed postcard. Choosing a color profile; soft-proofing and color separating an image; and working with an embedded profile--not to mention preparing Illustrator artwork for print--can all be daunting topics to those who just want to create the visuals. But by learning it all correctly, straight from the team at Adobe, readers will acquire the necessary skill sets to prevent those embarrassing errors that sometimes are discovered only after the job has already been printed. --Angelynn Grant

good but not great.......2003-05-12
there are better books out there.
Some serious instruction deficiencies.......2003-03-13
I really like the concept of what Adobe is doing in this book series. Yet, in Lessons on masking in lesson 4 and layering in Lesson 5 provided instructions that just did not work. This both surprised and obviously frustrated me. The other lessons worked fine - come on Adobe rework lessons 4 and 5 - you can do better than this!!!
Adobe Should Pull This Book or Give it Away for Free!.......2002-03-27
This book seems to be missing about half of the functionality of these two applications. It does not flow well, and does not cover information for web developers. This is NOT one of the better reference materials produced by Adobe. You would do well not to waste your hard-earned money on this one.
Digression is a terrible thing..........2001-12-18
Adobe is great- we all know that. They also make some pretty rockin books for their products. THIS IS NOT ONE OF THEM!! This is why-I used the Photoshop 5.5 & Illustrator 8.0 book in school, and its great, so I thought I would buy the new version, and even if only one or two lessons were updated or changed to reflect the new abilities of the two programs, I would be happy. Sure enough-FOUR LESSONS HAVE JUST BEEN DELETED!! Not replaced with anything!!! So, those of you that have Photoshop 6.0 CIB are used to 17 lessons- buy this book and pay ($$$) for NINE!! The last version of this book is great, but I returned this one. I WAS ROBBED!
Save your money.......2001-10-26
It's an okay book, but I think this is more of an intermediate book instead of advanced and was somewhat disappointing, although not entirely, it does have quite a few useful exercises, if anything I'm mostly disappointed because this book does'nt have enough lessons nor cover ALL the advanced features that they left out in the other Photoshop / Illustrator CIAB series. I would say buy this book if you have 30 bucks to spare for a little extra knowledge of PS/IL, but if you just want that PERFECT advanced photoshop book, you MUST buy Adobe Photoshop 6 Studio Techniques, which is also by the fine fellows at Adobe Press, otherwise it is pretty weak at covering advanced Adobe Illustrator.

Book Description
Before Road Trip, before Barry Ween, there was Frumpy the Clown! And hey, isn't it true that every child wants his or her own clown? Forget ponies and puppy dogs and hamsters, a clown is the true prize. And not the creepy kind that's gonna freak you out and make you soil your shorts either, but a chain-smoking, cynical, anarchist clown who's more interested in sticking it to the stuffed-shirt establishment than getting a job or focusing on the finer points of personal hygiene. When Frumpy enters the home of a typical American family, the children, Brad and Kim, are ecstatic. Their parents, neighbors, and local law enforcement, on the other hand, wish he would go away.
Customer Reviews:
Brilliant Family Fun.......2004-07-21
I've been reading comic strips since I was six years old, and not since Calvin and Hobbes have I seen a "family" style strip that can still make me laugh as a somewhat jaded teenager. Frumpy the Clown is irreverent, sweet, and maybe a little too smart for the comic page. Highly recommended.
Social commentary with laughs........2002-05-27
I picked up this collection for two reasons. One, I really enjoyed Barry Ween, Boy Genius, which is also by Judd Winick. Two, I was working off of a friend's recommendation. Since he's the one who steered me to the aforementioned Barry Ween, I figured it was a safe bet.
And indeed it was.
As described in the back cover blurb, Frumpy is not your typical clown. He isn't jolly. He isn't ... clownish. Instead, he is a cynical, chain-smoking, vegetarian (though, this seems to waver), animal-loving, motorcycle-riding clown. And, don't forget, a favorite of every child he encounters. "Sure, of course they like him. He's a clown," you might say. But that isn't it. Kids love Frumpy because Frumpy remembers that they are people, perhaps a bit on the short side, but people nonetheless.
There are plenty of antics in this comic, both on the part of Frumpy and on the part of the children, but there are also great human moments to remind you that not only is Frumpy not your typical clown, this isn't your standard rambunctious kids comic.
(Not to say there isn't plenty of rambunctious kid action. I promise you, there is.)
A great read, though you might want to be careful about giving this to a precocious child, as there are entirely too many pranks in the comic, which might plant seeds of ideas. =)
Hilarious but shortlived.......2001-08-14
Judd Winick is perhaps the funniest man in comics. Of course, he's not creating strips anymore, but during the two year run of Frumpy the Clown, he made me laugh harder and more frequently than most every other cartoonist has in my twenty-odd years. Frumpy can be poignant, and pointed, but most of all, Frumpy can be hilarious. Don't read it while drinking milk.
A great story about two kids and their clown.........2001-02-23
Who would've thought that all of this creativity would come from the black hole of TV called "The Real World"? Don't be fooled, dear reader. This collection of Judd Winick's discontinued syndicated newspaper dailies is surprisingly funny with an underlying subversive flavor. The art may look like an amalgam of various other strips that are in the Funnies today but contains an original flair that gives it familiar warmth. I think that Judd's humor and deft hand is on par with the other great daily strip creator of his generation, Frank Cho (Liberty Meadows). Hopefully with this collection as well as others (Barry Ween, Road Trip, Pedro & Me), Judd will be known as a comic book writer/artist and not that lovesick dweeb from a reality TV show in San Francisco.
Two words...Chocolate Lard!.......2001-02-22
If you have read Frumpy the Clown, you get the subject line for this review. If not, you need to buy this book and read it immediately! Frumpy the clown is one of the funniest things that I have read in recent years, but be warned, this comic has the capacity to make you pass out from laughing so hard that you can't breathe. How do I know you ask? Because it nearly happened to me. One word of warning: If you are a political or social conservative who takes themselves too seriously, avoid this book as you will hate a great many of the political and social comments that it makes. Also, while the strip is hilarious more often than not, it also can get INCREDIBLY sappy! We're talking family circus level sappy here :) But, if you are a political and social liberal who can stand a bit of sap, then you MUST own this book.
