Customer Reviews:
Disappointing.......2007-09-07
A book of adequate, but not great, landscape photographs. The real turn-off was the fatuous forward (the silliest I have ever read) and the 'poetry' of the photographer. If you want really great landscape photos without the silliness, I recommend anything by Joe Cornish or Tim Fitzharris. I am returning the book.
The New Centerpiece on Your Coffee Table.......2003-04-18
I first came across this book through one of my friends who is also an amateur photographer. I was amazed at the varying levels of texture from page to page. This book inspired me and changed the way that I myself approach photography and how I view colors as well as framing in the world around me.
I now own my own copy of "Voices" and I keep it predominantly displayed for others to be inspired as I was. The serenity found in many of the pictures touches me and the fluidity in other pictures move me. Every picture throughout the book reflect the title. You will never get as close to actually seeing "Voices of Light". To understand you must see.
The full page photos are museum quality artwork.......2001-02-20
Voices Of Light documents Palestinian photographer Yousef Khanfar's passion for photography as his language of choice for conveying the beauty, inspiration, grandeur, intimacy, and spirituality of landscape imagery. His full color, full page photos are museum quality artwork and serve to express the awe and wonder of the natural world of wind, water, stone, and tree. Voices Of Light is a most remarkable and memorable volume of powerful photography with each image offering a window to the world while revealing the handiwork of God.

Book Description
In Landscape of the Heart, Stephen J. Lyons writes of a five-year period following a divorce when he and his young daughter Rose serch for new meanings in their lives and their relationship. This quiet work of healing is both painful and joyful as Stephen and Rose discover the West together. These essays and poems confirm the existence of an internal "landscape" that responds to birds on the wing, mountain lakes, big skies, and dense forests - a landscape of the heart.
"These are the moments I am moving in," writes Lyons. "As I get older, I lean more and more toward these small pockets of the obvious and the mysterious that rise from the landscape, surround memories, and enhance a sense of possibilities. This is also where I am leading my daughter during the short years of our time together."
Customer Reviews:
A quietly touching, funny and affirming book ; great writing.......1999-04-02
Every time I happen upon a magazine article written by Lyons I read it, no matter the subject. He is one of my favorite freelancer/contributers around. Always a keen, insightful and oftentimes happily cynical view on things. A writer I can trust, or buy a used car from. His writing in this book is just as good, and the subject - a single father, his daughter, the land the nurtures them both - is very relevant to me - also a father with young children to whom I hope to pass on a love of the land. Great job, Stephen!
This is a beautiful book........1999-04-01
I really enjoyed reading this wonderful writing. Check it out

A cryptic journey.......2007-07-20
Like Masereel's other wordless books, this doesn't so much narrate a linear story as illustrate it with loosely connected snapshots. I'm not wholly sure the snapshots are in order, but I'm not sure that it really matters.
Each page frames a single woodcut, printed in dense blacks on heavy, glare-free paper. Continuity between images comes from the reader's own imagination, and the wordless format goes a long way in encouraging that imagination. The pictures portray widely varying scenes: rural roads, mysterious stairways, the warmth of a shared quilt, a bustling railway station, a night shattered by lightning, and much more. Some of the pictures stir one's spirit, others show friendship and love.
Masereel's style is angular and blocky. His primitive lines lend a naive comfort to scenes of affection, but that same jaggedness works equally well conveying power of many kinds. Whether you're a fan of woodcut prints or of illustrated storytelling, you'll find a lot to like in Masereel's work.

Deeply rooted in the customs and culture of the American South, seedbed of countless extraordinary writers, Elizabeth Spencer also spent time in Italy and Canada, where she lived with her husband. She portrays her family and formative experiences with clear-sighted affection in luminous, deceptively simple prose familiar to readers of novels such as The Light in the Piazza. Literary friends, from Eudora Welty to Alberto Moravia, are captured with evocative aplomb. Spencer can nail an entire personality in a single phrase, as when she portrays Saul Bellow circa 1949, "at ease with himself and his talent."
Customer Reviews:
Landscapes of the Heart: A Memoir.......2006-11-10
The author gives you a feeling of what it was like to grow up in the South, to be a citizen of that time and place, but to move away enough to see it in perspective. Many mentioned names and relationships useful for genealogy, too.
Miss Spencer's comparisons of North and South Mississippi.......1999-09-30
Miss Spencer's vivid comparisons of life in North and South Mississippi are especially interesting to those of us who have made this migration; she writes of the beauty of church names on the Mississippi Coast ("Our Lady of the Gulf," etc.) and how the construction of Interstate 10 changed things forever. Her description of the rustic conditions faced by Junior college teachers of the 1940s is revealing and a rather sad commentary on a system that took a long time to improve. The award she will receive in October from the Mississippi Library Association is much deserved.
Book Description
Makeup Your Mind deftly combines cult favorite cosmetics designer Francois Nars' two remarkable talents - makeup and photography, both of which he uses in this collection to stunning effect - to show women how to enhance their natural beauty. Designed by renowned graphic artist FAbien Baron to be the ultimate makeup how-to book, Makeup Your Mind is a comprehensive compilation of Before and After photographs, each containing instructional acetate overlays, covering almost every face type, complexion, eye color, and facial feature found on the runway today. Makeup Your Mind is also a revolutionary instruction manual on makeup from one of the most respected and imitated cosmetics artists in fashion today: a makeup book designed and constructed as a durable paperback companion suitable for the vanity or for the car, sliding in and out of its attractive hardcover binder as needed, containing precise instructional guides on clear plastic overlays indicating exactly what goes where, allowing you to see the finished effect for perfect results. Summarizing each chapter on Eyes, Lips, Neutrals, Shimmer, Monochrome and Suntan, Pastels, Color, and Skincare are Francois Nars' trademarked guidelines on the technique of applying makeup for that dazzling NARS look. Showcasing the famous NARS look are today's top models, including Karen Elson, Maggie Rizer, Naomi Campbell, Devon Aoki, Trish Goff, Erin O'Connor, Sophie Dahl, May Anderson, Ling, Aurelie, Missy Rayder, Elsa, Caroline Ribero, Eva Herzagova, and many others. Makeup Your Mind features these women and more in 63 stunning Before and After pictures. All of the models were shot sans makeup for the Before pictures, displaying their bare-naked faces replete with imperfections and idiosyncrasies. Their transformations in the After pictures span from natural and elegant to fun and outrageous. In superb four-color photographs and brilliant acetate instructional guides, Makeup Your Mind demonstrates how makeup can minimize flaws and maximize beauty potential for every woman.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent photos.......2007-08-12
This is a great book for beginners. The photos are dummy proof, and the plastic overlay explains everything without confusion. Fantastic. Good investment.
Good for nothing.......2007-08-02
I have already exchanged mine.Very nice quality of paper and pics, but:
- it just shows very young models w/ pale pale complexions (that is, where makeup really shows easily);
- it carries transparencies with the names of their colors aplied in every pic (what ridiculous propaganda!);
- it is based on the fact that one simple item (like just a red lipstick, or just eyeliner or whatever) can change a whole look and that's all they show.
(So far, Auckwin's have been the best I've bought, I just love both of them!)
professional reference book.......2007-05-26
this book is for more advanced makeup artists who have grasp basic concepts already. it is more of fashion/glamour makeup, and talks more about contouring and highlighting. it can be used as a face chart or reference when you deal with different faces. the pictures are of very high quality, with all the details exposed. recommended for pros.
A little something for everyone.......2007-04-26
I have bought and read quite a few books on makeup over the years, and this is one of my favorites, one that I would recommend to both newcomers to the world of makeup to OR to experts who just want some inspiration.
One of the few downsides of the book is that the text is grey (rather than black,) and justified in the center of the page rather than formatted in normal paragraphs. This makes it harder to read than it needs to be, and makes it tempting to skip over the tips on application techniques and color choice.
What makes the book unique is the clear overlays between the pages that show where that makeup was applied, and names the products (from the Nars line, of course) which were used. Also, it's unusual that the photos in the book don't seem to be heavily Photoshopped. You can see the freckles, pores and stray eyebrow hairs on the models. (I own all the books by the late Kevyn Aucoin, and though I admire his artistry, honestly you can tell the pictures in his books have been Photoshopped within an inch of their lives.)
As a practical matter, most of the looks in Makeup Your Mind are more for the runway or at least a nightclub, rather than wear on the street or the workplace. That doesn't mean that you couldn't adapt the makeup in some of the pictures for everyday wear. For example, you could take the eye shadow combination from one of the pictures and wear it with a lighter lipstick, or try the wild red lipstick from another page and skip the smokey eyes. Some of the pictures, especially from the "Neutrals" section are natural looking and ready for everyday wear.
In a book about makeup, readers always want to see someone to whom they can relate, someone who looks (at least something) like themselves. The models in the book are all young; but they are ethnically diverse.
This book is one of the few books on makeup that I would recommend for someone who was above beginner level. Some of the looks (like the rainbow-hued eyes) are a bit of extreme; but there are plenty of books out there to teach the beginner how to achieve a conservative, unmadeup look. Those tips are here, too. The book can also inspire women to come out of their comfort zone occasionally. I would recommend the book to makeup junkies everywhere.
Makeup your mind.......2007-03-27
very infomational, I like the tranceparent overlays for each make up. Bright and dramatic with subtle complaments.

Sergio Leone Meets George Romero As Softcore Porn/Splatter.......2003-07-15
The title of this review pretty much sums up Fistful of Blood, the grisley, pointless, yet strangely entertaining new book by Kevin Eastman (Of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles fame) and Simon Bisley (Lobo, Slaine, Judge Dredd). The attractive, relatively low-priced hardcover by Heavy Metal books tells the near-future tale of a gorgeous blonde woman who stumbles (Buck-naked, of course) into a desert town overrun by two warring factions: Zombies rule the streets by day, Vampires by night. The mystery girl straps on some guns, and commences to kill everything in sight. That's pretty much it. Eastman's writing is nothing special, but he gets the job done, and Bisley's art is grotesquely beautiful, but why would you print a book by as talented a painter as Simon Bisley in black-&-white? Kinds of defeats the purpose. Fistful of blood is more likely to please readers too young or too shy to actually purchase a copy of Playboy than someone looking for a good read. Fans of Bisley's art might feel they're getting their money's worth, but all others will probably want to take a pass....
