Until recently, there was little women could do to prevent breast cancer. After years of research, nutrition is emerging as one of the most important weapons to fight this deadly disease. Now, in The Breast Cancer Prevention Diet: The Powerful Foods, Supplements and Drugs That Can Save Your Life, Dr. Bob Arnot, author of the bestselling Dr. Bob Arnot's Revolutionary Weight Control Program, provides a powerful, safe, easy-to-follow diet that can actually transform the structure of the breast and alter the flow of hormones that induce breast cancer. Arnot, NBC News chief medical correspondent, integrates and clearly explains the latest and most important breast cancer research from around the world. He gives 12 detailed steps to prevent breast cancer and provides specific cancer-prevention strategies for premenopausal and postmenopausal women, breast cancer survivors, and girls. Dr. Bob's sound advice will also provide many other benefits, from improving overall health to lowering the risk of heart disease, diabetes, and osteoporosis. --Ellen Albertson

Customer Reviews:
An important word on the "American Council for Science and Health".......2005-10-29
I have not read Arnot's book. However, to those reviewers who cite the attacks made against the book by the American Council for Science and Health, you need to know the shaky credentials and corporate sponsorship of that particular organization. Go to their website: there you will find articles saying that pesticide in foods poses absolutely no health risks, and articles saying that vending machines in schools should be allowed to continue selling soda and a whole range of snack foods in the interests of a free market system. This Council appears to be nothing more than a highly-financed mouthpiece for various corporate interests. I have been highly skeptical of any of their "scientific" claims for a while now. Finding out that they do not support Arno's book actually makes me more interested in checking it out myself, so I have ordered a copy.
An outstanding resource for those dealing with breast cancer.......2005-03-28
Having just been diagnosed with a recurrence of non-metastatic breast cancer, I decided to seek out resources that might help me make the lifestyle changes I failed to make after my first episode, in order to prevent yet another recurrence. Since I'm in a doctoral program, I decided to take a course on alternative medicine and immediately began reading the texts, which led to this excellent resource.
Dr. Arnot's book is highly readable and very sincere. By that I mean it has heart, explained by Dr. Arnot's statement that he conducted the research for his wife who, upon her Mother's diagnosis with breast cancer, asked him what she could do to keep from getting it. The information in the book was his answer to her--information he decided to share with other women. His job as a medical reporter provides him with a language deftness and communication skills that enabled him to make technical information accessible to a lay audience. The latter is what makes the book easy and enjoyable reading rather than work.
Like many, I questioned how valid his information was--until I encountered the same information (as well as studies) in other credible sources. Dr. Anot is not just a good reporter, he's a good scientist.
I, too, have talked this book up to most of the women I know. Prior to reading it and the other resources I've encountered, despite having a decent lay knowledge of this disease, surprises abounded. Why don't they teach anything substantive about health and wellness in school when it's so crucial to leading a happy, productive, and healthy life? I expect many of you can guess the answer--it's not in the interests of the power elite, specifically the drug companies and American food industry. (Read one of the fascinating books on "McDonalidization" for insight on this mindset and it's political/economic influence.)
My only complaints about the book are that I would like to see a follow-up edition with the conclusion to many of the studies that were in progress when it was written. Many of them have concluded by the end of 2004 and I'd sure like to know the results. I'd also like to have seen the recipes that accompanied the meal plans, or even a separate volume containing recipes.
There is much that women who currently have, have had, or want to prevent this disease can do to hold it at bay and show it who's boss (especially since only 20% of cases are attributed primarily to genetic causes). Reading, no, absorbing the contents of this book, is one of them!
Better now, than later..........2002-03-06
First, every woman I care about, my friends, sisters, mom, etc., will be getting a copy of this book as their next gift from me! Dr. Arnot gives example after example of medical research PLUS lifestyles of women all over the world showing better health than most Americans, revealing what scientists believe attribute to it! Unless every word and Doctor, or school referenced are all liars, this book is a LIFESAVE. Scientist have come a long way. They don't just say "don't eat this, but eat that" and you'll be fine. That's too simple. They know much more than that now and we need to take advantage of that. If they say breakfast is important, always eat SOMETHING, than that's what we should do! If you want a fiction book, or an easy fix, or if you want to ramble about how research in mice has little to do with humans, than keep fooling yourself. I'll take all the help a reputable doctor or scientist or medical college wants to give to prolong my life AND give me GOOD HEALTH at the same time. Many of us ae having our children late in life. My youngest was born when I was 38. I've got to live a long time to be there for her. My mother had me at 18! She's 70 now and I love having her around. I trust there is nothing in Dr. Bob's book that will hurt me -- but that will only help me. Should I still go to the doctor? OF COURSE!!! I have been getting yearly mamograms for 15 years, and only this year did I have a a small spot. I'm to get another exam in May 2002. I'm worried. They think it's nothing and say MOST OF THEM ARE BENIGN. What if i'm one of those woman not so lucky? I am not sure about Soy Isoflavones (the dosage) although Dr. Bob talks about it. Thanks, and KEEP READING!! ...
Not till I find out more about Lillian Thompson!.......2000-11-19
I was all set to get this book, really...Till it came to my attention that I alreasy HAVE a book that cites Lillian Thompson's research at The Univerity of Toronto with flax seeds on breast cancer in mice (or rats, whichever-- except that its NOT whichever, it's bloody mice! and they don't always get the same results in both!) and it says that she is going one step further and, in a pilot study, is giving flaxseeds to women recently diagnosed with the disease. Now there is a review right here written in December, 1998, about the hardcover edition of this book that says that Dr. Arnot failed to make clear that the results Lillian Thompson obtained were for mice. The book I bought was published in hardcover in 1998 and in paperback in 1999, and I just got it in 2000. So I though maybe since then Lillian Thompson had published something in which she had given flaxseeds to human subjects diagnosed with breast cancer. Since the government has granted free poblic access to Medline, I looked up her reasearh on it. She hasn't done recent research on any human subjects unless you count one experiment done a few years ago in which she gave various doses of of raw flaxseeds and processed (as in cooked: in bread and muffins) flaxseeds to healthy human subjects to see if what (no I don't know what--but it was what it was supposed to be) was excreted would be excreted in a dose dependant manner and if it would be affected by processing ( raw vs. processed): it was excreted in a dose dependant manner and this was regardless of whether the flaxseeds were raw or processed in muffins and bread. But on Medline I could find no experiments of hers on human subjects with breast cancer going back as far as 1993. It's not that her experiments on mice aren't encouraging , but one wonders what happened to the human subjects that were recently diagnosed with breast cancer who were going to get the flax seeds. It may not even be that she hasn't done that and published it too--it's just that as of now, if she has, I can't find it on Medline and I can find this other stuff of hers. I don't intend to stop using flaxseeds, but I'm also not getting this book yet. Also to be consdered, possibly, that I do not know about: another reveiewer said that some of the scientists whose work was cited in the book have disassociated themselves from it. One might want to know why. I do think that diet and some cancers are related and that it is worth one's while to find out what one can and try to reduce one's risk. However, I ,too, live on a budget, I have other needs too, and i'm not ready for this book yet.
I have breast cancer.......1999-11-04
I remember watching Dr. Bob on the Oprah show and I was hopeful because my diet and exercise routine (in addition to the suppliments I take) closely matched his anti-breast cancer book. I managed stress. I wasn't in a high-risk group.
Well...I'm getting ready for my second round of chemotherapy. People PLEASE DON'T BE FOOLED. Anyone is at risk and there isn't much you can do to stop this horrible disease before it hits you.

Howard Chaykin's groundbreaking series opened the floodgate for x-rated comics by respected cartoonists. A saga of thugs, bombings, shootings and sluts for hire with a terrible secret.
Customer Reviews:
Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03
Definitely not as good as I thought it would be. You may as well go a bit further and read Sin City.
Chaykin's style is certainly suited to the material, with sex, violence noir, dames, tough guys and all that sort of thing. With strippers, of course, but this did not quite hit the mark for me.
a twisted tale that changed my outlook on graphic novels.......2007-05-21
I have a hardbound edition of this. This novel is pretty raw compared to his later works (especially American Century). I will concede that it is a little rough around the edges but you have to appreciate the beauty of a noir story line that go in a direction that you least expect. You simply have no idea where the story is taking until the very end--which is horribly wicked and pretty funny.
Howard Chaykin's answer to Sin CIty.......2007-04-25
Howard Chaykin does some nice stylized comic book illustrations. But also kinda conservative in composition and layout.
Black Kiss is a sloppy Noir mess. The plot is not quite there. THe story doesnt add up. The action and sex arent up to par (in the story or on the page). The scenes arent well developed and are under utilized. THeres not much to get excited about.
so I cant recommend this book.
I really expected more.......2007-04-10
I ordered this based on Amazon's recommendation before I noticed the publisher was Eros. Seeing how Amazon recommended I assumed that it would be a pretty good film noir in comics and it wasn't.
Howard Chaykin at his perverse best!!.......2006-06-10
Howard Chaykin is one of the great writers/illustrators of our time that makes no bones about emphasizing graphic sex and ultra-violence. The story, about a ex-con jazz musician framed for the murder of his ex-wife and daughter who gets involved with these two... I can't. It's too much. It's so wonderfully over-the-top that you can't resist it. This comic has a little something offensive for everyone: gender-bending, incest, gang-rape, necrophilia, pedophilia, and that old classic: Satanic worship. It basically has every form of "deviant" sex that you could imagine, but Chaykin plays it so twisted and matter-of-fact, that you can tell that this is NOT to be taken seriously.
It is also REALLY NOT for kids. But grown-ups who enjoy a little bit of the dark side will be wholly sucked into this series of bloody and sexual misadventures.

Average at best.......2003-01-06
The Black Diamond 2 book, while it is definately good to use as a cross reference with other price guides or collectible books, I have found a disturbing amount of errors in facts, not to mention bad editing and spell checking. I further believe that the author is one of the biggest hypocrates around. He reviews books in his book section and basically slams the KISS Collectibles Identification And Price Guide book put out in 1993 by Karen and John Lesniewski. He claims that it is a bad identification book because the photos are in black and white and are blurry. I have used this book extensively and found it to be super helpful. The pictures are clear and there is an eight page color section with only photos. I have found the black and white photos to be as clear and consise, if not clearer in this book than in the Black Diamond 2 book. The last thing I could say is how can you trust the information in Black Diamond 2 when the last page of the book is filled with corrections from Black Diamond 1. He didn't even know that Ace was from the Bronx!!!!
Black Diamond II.......2000-02-24
Very little readable material. Just a bunch of dates and lists of people. Disappointed to say the least.
Another essential book for KISS fans........1999-05-25
Dale Sherman has done it again! He's put out another book that is essential for KISS fans.Although not near as exciting as BD1,I again did learn a lot I didn't know before. This book is pretty much for KISS collectors only. But it sure could be a life save you a lot of money and heartache by providing detailed information on imports and bootlegs you might be considering purchasing. Yes,it gets rather lengthy and boring ,but at least its honest. And for that reason ,I give it five stars.
A BOOK THAT BEGS TO BE READ!!.......1999-03-01
READ ME JSUT READ ME!!! THATS THE ONLY WAS TO EXPERIANCE IT
Dale Does It Again!.......1997-12-31
Definately the best KISS collector's book on the market. Actually, it's the only one worth owning anymore. I began using it immediately and saved myself the heartache of paying first printing prices for a second printing of an album.
Even though the pictures are all black & white, they're clear and perfect. It covers all KISS memorabilia, as well as merchandise associated with each member, both before and after their respective association with KISS. From bubble gum to bootlegs, you name it and it's here. Make no mistake: this is not a pricing guide. It is a history of the memorabilia and insanity which surrounds and documents the hottest band in the land.
Dale has once again given the KISS Army a Black Diamond - a definate jewel in the current rut of material flooding the market. If you collect KISS memorabilia, you absolutely must have this book. Oh - and look for the quote from me on the back of the book!

Customer Reviews:
Great Detail and Trivia, But Linguistically Flawed.......2006-12-04
Dale Sherman has written an engaging biography chock full of fascinating, little-known trivia, which succeeds in answering many questions fans such as myself may have had about the band. Many times I was caught thinking "Ah-haaa! So that's why..." This is in fact Sherman's intention, as stated in the Introduction. In fact, his dedication to trivia minutae is on occasion distracting and sometimes leads the reader onto unnecessary tangents.
The main problem I have with the book, besides the cheesy cover (Where's the band??) is the weakness in writing style. This may be the fault of the book's editor. There are countless instances of run-on sentences, dangling particles, awkward syntax and sentence structure, grammatical errors, words used out of context or with wrong meaning, and other frustrating language snafus. I do not claim to be an English professor, but there were many occasions when I had to read a sentence over again, shake my head, and think, "Why didn't he write that sentence this way, or use this word instead, or use this verb tense/form?", etc. It often distracted me from the narrative, making for a sometimes uncomfortable read where I was fearing the next grammatical flub, which always eventually came. Luckily, he uses quotes liberally from the band and others, and it is in fact these quotes which lack the syntax errors and are easiest to read!
Otherwise, this is definitely a decent edition to the Kiss library and hopefully future editions will be better edited and thus easier to read.
A good read amongst all the KISS books out there!.......2004-02-08
Black Diamond is a good read for die-hard KISS fans only. It's up there on my top ten list for an all KISS book. Compared amongst other books like KISS and Sell, it's a better read. My favorite amongst all the Kiss books is KISS & Tell by Gebert and McAdams... NOW THAT'S A CLASSIC ROCK BOOK. I rate that a must-read for all rock fans (not just Ace/Kiss fans).
My list of KISS reading would be KISS & Tell first, Black Diamond and Black Diamond II (for the Kiss collectable people out there).
Not Worth A Dime.......2004-02-02
Nothing in this book is new. If you read enough articles on the band you would have the exact same information provided by Dale Sherman, who happens to be just an average writer in the first place. There's also a negative tone to this book as if Sherman was angry at the band when he wrote the book, and instead of coming across as insightful, he instead comes across as petty.
If you're going to spend your money on a book about KISS, it would be better to buy one by someone who was either there or spent the time actually doing some credible research. "KISS AND SELL," and "Kiss: Behind The Mask," are both better books to spend your money on. Of course if you'd rather give Dale Sherman your money that's fine, and in the meantime I have some swampland in the Mojave Desert I want to sell you...
GREAT TRY BUT..........2001-09-07
The small type letters alone are a pain in the a..., but the author really tried to write a good unauthorized bio. Of course none of the members were interviewed for this book. The main sources are interviews conceded for magazines, TV's, etc. You end up really thinking tha Stanley and Simmons are nothing more than greedy money machines who just want take every cent out of their fans'pockets. If this is true, I don't know.
On par with Kiss & Sell.......2001-04-04
I was pleasantly surprised by this book--it's written from a fan's perspective, but it's still well-balanced; it would have been easy for it to have gone the other way (adulation).
Essentially it's the history of the band as told by various members of the group at various points in time via various interview (tired of the word 'various yet?) sources. It may bother some that Sherman never bothered to index the pages, but that's a minor complaint. My only real complaint is the lack of input from Vinnie Vincent, Mark St. John, Eric Singer, and Bruce Kulick; all off whom had valid opinions about the band, but were given little or no emphasis at all.
Much better than Kiss & Tell, and as good as Kiss & Sell (however different), and well worth the money you spend on it. Especially for an unauthorised biography. I especially liked the massive amounts of contradiction amongst the band members concerning specific albums and tunes.
I seriously doubt that Gene Simmons' upcoming book will be as honest as this one. Maybe the whole truth will never be discovered, but this book is a step in the right direction.

Book Description
First published in the pages of Weird Tales in 1934, C.L. Moore's Jirel of Joiry is the first significant female sword and sorcery protagonist and one of the most exciting and evocative characters the genre has ever known. Published alongside seminal works by H.P. Lovecraft and Robert E. Howard, the five classic fantasy tales included in this volume easily stand the test of time and often overshadow the storytelling power and emotional impact of stories by Moore's more famous contemporaries. A seminal work from one of fantasy's most important authors, Black God's Kiss is an essential addition to any fantasy library.

The true challenge is to go to the really great parties that you are not wanted at, without having to waste time social climbing and befriending the "right people" so you can get properly invited. Benefits of Crashing:
Find success through partying. Meet your mate or lover, find important business contacts, make lifelong friends.
Learn why socializing with nobodies will get you nowhere. How to avoid the poor, the unimportant and the unattractive. Understand the importance of "partying up".
If at first you don't succeed, go in from the beach. Or around the back, up the fire escape, through an open window or any unguarded side entrance.
Learn the secrets of the party crashing industry. Expert crashers are an elite group equivalent to the U.S. Army's Delta Force.
Learn special crashing techniques. Read names of the invited over the doorman's shoulder or listen for a name and use it with another person who is checking people in to the party or events.
Learn the super secret advanced techniques of the industry elite.
What to do if you get caught. Learn the art of plausible deniability. This indispensable book will save you thousands of dollars each year in food, alcohol and entertainment costs as well as thousands more in unnecessary purchases of tickets to Charity, Balls, Benefits and Special Events.
