Book Description
Venini. Catalogue Raisonné 1921-1986 offers an in-depth account of the involving company history of the glassworks set up by Paolo Venini in 1921 and carried forward by members of the Venini family up until 1986, the year in which the business was sold off. Alongside the comprehensive catalogue containing some 250 descriptions detailing each item produced in over six decades of activity, the book's curator Anna Venini Diaz de Santillana has traced the history of the 'Vetrerie Venini' glasshouse through each successive master craftsman's term as art director: Napoleone Martinuzzi, Carlo Scarpa, Paolo Venini himself, Tomaso Buzzi, Fulvio Bianconi, and Ludovico Diaz de Santillana.
The careful analysis underlying each critical essay and the breadth of topics covered make this book an invaluable reference work on the creative enterprise and outstanding achievements of Venini & C., long acknowledged as an international hallmark of quality in the applied arts.
With its rich array of illustrations and catalogue of the firm's key production items, and an extensive reference section comprising glossary, bibliography, and list of exhibitions, this book is the most exhaustive directory of the Venini glasshouse's production. In addition to the renowned Catalogo verde and Catalogo rosso, the curator has included the legendary Catalogo blue, and essential reference source for historians, collectors, dealers, and connoisseurs of art.

Terrfifc book on a terrific subject........2004-05-25
Thoroughly enjoyable. Makes me want to drop everything and run out and buy a pano camera. Binding, as described earlier, is not the best and probably will have to be nursed a little to maintain its longevity but a lovely book full of inspirational material.
Fine book on an obscure topic.......2003-08-21
This is a very helpful survey of Panoramic Photography. It covers the broad history from the earliest days of photography to today. He has portfolios from a collection of current panormaic photographers that gives a good sense of what people are up to.
There is a comprehensive discussion of panoramic cameras, including obscure hand-built models.
My only suggestions for improvement are:
1. A greatly expanded discussion of digital panorama hardware and software.
2. More careful editing of the text. It is repetitive at points and seems a bit rambling.
3. A discussion of how to mount and display these images would be helpful.
I don not agree with Barry Schmetter's review
He blames the publisher for not having a bigger, more expensive book. Panoramas are an odd shape (wierd aspect ratio) that complicates printing. I think this book works well. Wonderful color reproduction in a well-made book.
All-in-all I highly recomment this new book on Panoramic Photography.
Great book, but shabby publishing.......2003-03-23
Stretch is a great introduction to the field of panoramic photography. Nick Meers not only showcases some amazing examples of panoramic photography, but describes the wide variety of cameras and working techniques used to make the photographs. This is probably the best treatment of panoramic photography I've ever read and it makes me want to run out an purchase a horribly expensive panoramic camera.
Shame on Rotovision for printing an undersized version of this book on cheap paper stock more suitable for a magazine. The book would be spectacular in the larger format it deserves and on a decent paper stock. As it stands the photographs are unsatisfyingly small, the printing mediocre, and the binding suspect. Nick gets 5 stars for his efforts, but the substandard Rotovision presentation knocks off two stars with its shabby publishing job.

Book Description
Winner of the Xeric Foundation Grant Award, Dirty Boxes is a graphic novel consisting of three stories. 'Refuse' is a post-industrial chutes & ladders game as if designed by Alexander Rodchenko. 'Cleft Mallet' places Huckleberry Finn before a cracked rear-view mirror. And finally, 'Egg-Minus', stirs Russian legend, vaudevillian comic strip mayhem, and grimy Berlin realism into a meaty gallinaceous cocktail, as three tangentially related narratives, are woven around the motifs of love, betrayal, decapitation, and poultry. Tottering between a belly-laugh and pretentious slush, Dirty Boxes is a stylistic slumgullion with a deliciously hollow center.

Book Description
Wilde on Sincerity: "A little sincerity is a dangerous thing, and a great deal of it is absolutely fatal." Nearly a century after his death, the wit of Oscar Wilde remains as fresh and barbed as ever. This collection of his works, letters, reviews, anecdotes and repartee is ample proof of this iconoclast's enduring place in the world of arts and letters.
Customer Reviews:
"Between Me and Life There is A Mist of Words Always".......2003-08-09
Oscar Wilde once said "Drama is the meeting place of art and life." In this essential, compact volume Ralph Keyes leaves a trail to that corner by gathering the flamboyant author's thorniest, at times most insightful quotes and anecdotes. Keyes uses Wilde's plays, reviews, letters, interrogations, even conversational repartee (given its own section) which remained Wilde's signature to his time.
Keyes divides Wilde's epigrams and puns into brief, easily readable sections. Wilde twists traditional views on permanent truths and those of his day: altruism ("Charity creates a multitude of sins.") history ("History is merely gossip.") theology, poverty, dissent ("Discontent is the first step in the progress of a man or a nation.")
Above all, Wilde (through Keyes' selections) quips and dissects each of the fine arts (music, prose, painting) and roles for creator, viewer, interpreter. He addresses the writer ("Even prophets correct their proofs.") critic ("Criticism is the highest form of autobiography"), and artist ("Like the Greek gods, artists are known only to each other.")
Amid his fast-paced one liners on male-female relations you sense how Wilde viewed marriage over and above his well-known bromide, "Divorces are made in heaven." The book ends with Wilde explaining and defending the homosexual relationship he called "the love that dare not speak its name". Whether or not you accept Wilde's lifestyle preferences, his eloquent, sad defense of a letter he wrote a younger man is moving as he describes the unique merge of intellect and youthful energy which to him formed "the noblest sort of affection." It is as close to heartfelt as anyone could get who once said, "A little sincerity is a dangerous thing, and a great deal of it is absolutely fatal."
Oscar Wilde was parodied, villified, and eventually imprisoned for his beliefs and flamboyance. But he eventually influenced artists from George Bernard Shaw to John Lennon, staking a claim as the earliest example of a postmodern artist. This book helps introduce Wilde's full books and plays (Keyes references them consistently and provides a full bibliography), or helps you reference witty, intellectual (or psuedo-intellectual, as Wilde might have preferred) quotes for any occassion. (As to plagarizing, Wilde himself called it, "the privilege of the appreciative man.") His full literary courses are nutritious and filling enough, but "The Wit and Wisdom of Oscar Wilde" is as savory when reading or writing as salt is when dining.

Book Description
More than 1000 ripostes, paradoxes, and epigrams on sin, society, genius, wealth, men, women, religion, America, education, and smoking: "Work is the curse of the drinking classes," "I can resist everything except temptation," etcetera. Also excerpts from his trial testimony, where the tragedy implicit in Wilde's humor is nowhere more vivid.
Customer Reviews:
Doesn't Do Wilde Justice.......2000-09-26
While Wilde was one of the greatest wits of our time, this book of epigrams is sorely lacking. His bits of conversation are fun to read, but quotations from his written works are taken out of context and lose much because of that. I recommend this for any Wildephile, but with reservations.
An excellent reprint of an indispensible book........2000-06-27
Formerly published under the title of 'The Epigrams of Oscar Wilde,' this compilation of quotes is one of my favorites. I turn to it again and again when looking for a choice bit of humor to accentuate a letter or conversation. There are bits and pieces from all of Oscar Wildes plays, non-fiction works, and even conversations. Topics are as diverse as Religion ("Religion is the fashionable substitute for Belief."--Dorian Gray) and Love ("...love and gluttony justify everything"-In Conversation) and Criticism ("...the first duty of an art critic is to hold his tongue at all times, and upon all subjects."-The English Renaissance of Art). Highly Recommended, and makes a great gift as well.

A Rather Boring Collection of 'Jokes'.......2005-06-24
I must admit that I have never held Oscar Wilde in much esteem as a serious writer. My sister is a fan and she bought this book. I had a browse through and it is what I had expected. This book will appeal to those who imagine themselves as intelligent and sophisticated. Although they may be entertained, they will learn nothing of consequence. Do not be fooled by Wilde's pseudo-philosophical style. There is nothing to be gained from a reading of this book besides mild, and brief, entertainment, or the satisfaction of knowing you can apprieciate the wit of a supposed intellectual, who is in fact nothing of the sort.
I would also like to correct a mistake I noticed in a previous review. Oscar Wilde is not an 'English Gentleman' - He is in fact from Ireland.
A HANDY AND NASTY LITTLE COMPILATION.......2002-02-28
This small book is very big in biting power. It is a compilation of witty and revealing bits of Oscar Wilde's genius. If you don't want to sift through all Wilde's works, or the dog ate his books that you had in the basement, or maybe at your age you don't remember the fundamental lessons that you read about style, wit and life by this English gentleman THEN YOU MUST BUY THIS BOOK.
A comprehensive little manual that will enable you to outwit your opponents and reach the epythome of the educated insult (which is very interesting because you will be able to start insulting your boss, without any consequences. Or maybe you will be promoted...)
Never be left without something pretentious to say again.........2000-06-11
Ever wanted to be one of those know-it-alls at parties with those great haughty insults and witty remarks?
Buy this book and never worry again. Definatly a good buy. Fun, Funny, and Educational (?). If you like Oscar Wilde, you'll like this book.

Book Description
Here is a collection of quotes from the plays, novels, and lacerating wit of Oscar Wilde-a man who boasted that he could talk spontaneously on any subject. This claim is proved by the wicked and clever comments about art, human nature, morals, society, politics, history, and numerous other subjects contained in this book, including the infamous "I can resist everything except temptation" and "A man who desires to get married should know either everything or nothing." His snubs and insults became the talk of his time and are still great bits of humor to accentuate speeches, letters, or dinner party conversations.
