Book Description
More than 35 years ago, the CIA and the Pentagon invited Ted Serong, an Australian soldier, to advise them on the conduct of the war in Vietnam. This is Serong's previously untold story of that war. When the Australian government made the decision to send a group of Australian jungle warfare experts to Vietnam as a contribution to the American alliance, it was Serong who led this team and personally chose its members. He had two additional assignments, the first as advisor to the U.S. military commander in Vietnam, and the second, secret until now, as an advisor to the CIA on counterinsurgency. Concerned from the outset that the U.S. had no strategy for carrying on the war, Serong warned John F. Kennedy's special group of the dangers ahead. Serong stayed on to advise the last president of South Vietnam as the North Vietnamese army converged on Saigon, to escape only in the final helicopter evacuation from the U.S. embassy roof.
Customer Reviews:
American shortcomings.......2002-05-21
As just another digger I found this book to be most worthy.
Having been through the training regimes as recommended by Ted Serong in Australia and having the understanding of the type of war we were involved in I could never understand the manner in which the Americans fought the war.
After reading this book I now understand it to have been a distrust of non American ideas and arrogance of the"we know better" type and impatience, thinking always that bigger is better rather than looking at quality.
Should be studied closely by military strategists.......2001-09-09
The Vietnam War, and especially the reasons for its loss, from both military and political standpoints, will continue to be a matter of importance for those who are concerned with the survival of democracies.
Much has been written on political considerations, but military questions have been more neglected. Hence this book, which examines the role of Brigadier Ted Serong in the conflict, will be of great interest to a variety of readers.
Anne Blair is a research associate with the National Centre for Australian Studies at Monash University. Her interest in Serong is well-based. He had a central role in the development of military strategy and tactics, although to a large extent his views conflicted with those ultimately applied by the United States in Vietnam.
Early during his time in Vietnam, Serong concluded that the American forces were not properly directed, and that the South Vietnamese Army also should have directed its efforts in different ways.
He was involved in the development of the Police Field Force (PFF), with the aim of destroying the structures of the Vietnamese Communists in rural and mountain areas, and also the networks by which guerrillas obtained weapons, food, information and recruits.
Serong's concept (which is particularly persuasive in retrospect) was that the PFF would clear areas of Viet Cong influence, thus freeing the South Vietnamese Army (the AVRN) for combat against the North Vietnamese regiments that were operating in the border areas.
Unfortunately the United States forces showed a lack of patience, and were not prepared to support adequately the gradual advance of the program.
The PFF was absorbed by other US mission programs in 1966-67, but Serong himself remained invaluable and was consulted constantly by government advisers and by military commanders at the highest level.
At all times, his perceptions of the strategic position were sound. For example, he was one of the first to appreciate that the 1968 Tet Offensive constituted, contrary to media reports, a militarily disastrous loss by the Communists.
This book is very valuable. It is well researched. The author had the advantage of numerous conversations with Serong, and her account is expressed carefully, with much detail and appropriate references.
It is impossible to read it without concluding that Serong is a great Australian, and a great man in any context, a figure of enormous importance whose advice, had it been followed properly, would probably have led to a different result in Vietnam.
It is therefore a book which, in addition to its general readership, should be studied closely by military strategists and tacticians, and by the various academics, think-tanks and institutes which are so influential in the application of political and military policy.

Book Description
The ability to self–nurture and set effective limits is the root of human maturity, and the foundation for emotional, behavioural, and spiritual balance. Fortunately, the skills to self–nurture and set effective limits can be fine–tuned and readers will learn them via a wealth of practical examples, colourful case histories, and scientific findings that are both fascinating and easy to understand. These skills are effective for a wide range of psychological and addictive problems––from alcoholism and other addictions to overeating, overworking, overspending, and perfectionism.
Customer Reviews:
Step one of changing your life........2007-05-19
I learned about The Pathway in a health magazine and bought it immediately. It was the first time I read about research about feelings and getting to the root of over-eating, over-working, over-shopping, over-everything. I have since completed Solution Training and my life has never been the same.
Saved my life.......2007-01-22
It is almost impossible to describe how powerfully effective the method desribed in this book is without coming off sounding like a raving loon. If you buy the book, you can read about a convincing array of corraborating scientific evidence, but I can only tell you my personal experience:
After suffering from the most severe, chronic depression you can probably imagine for 15 years, I can say that - six months after picking up this book - I am off anti-depressants and happy/fulfilled for the first time since my mother died when I was a teenager. I have energy and vibrancy again, food and spending are no longer my primary wells of comfort, and my relationships have an intimacy I never even knew I was missing. Astonishingly enough, I have barely completed the 'middle' steps of the pathway. There is more to come! I believe any individual could benefit from the wisdom in this book, but I am living proof that it stands up against some serious baggage.
The Solution Method (i.e. The Pathway) costs less that therapy, less than many other treatments to deal with over-eating, over-spending, co-dependency, etc., AND it is designed to foster independence. You follow the Pathway method until you achieve your "solution," and then you're done. That's it.
The method itself is a way of learning the self-nurturing and self-discipline skills that are learned naturally when everything goes pretty "right" during childhood - i.e. your parents are responsive, emotionally healthy individuals, and you have a relatively secure passage to adulthood. You learn what the skills are and how to grind them into your consciousness until they become second nature, the way they would be if you'd learned them from the beginning. It's simple, but it's amazing powerful.
I only hope Laurel Mellin gets the recognition she deserves within her lifetime.
Finally.......2006-11-10
This book explains so much about the skills needed to be an emotionally secure adult. Living a life of balance and joy is within reach and this book shows us how.
The Pathway - .......2006-08-11
I hav'nt finished reading the above book - but to this point I am finding it to be very well written, interesting, and easy to read.
Good value for the money.
I was completely, utterly wrong - this book changed my life forever........2006-07-13
I wrote the review below "Older Book May Be Better for Some" three years ago. What a three years it has been! I went on to complete Solution Training as described in The Pathway with a person that Laurel had personally trained in the method. I cannot tell you how much this work has changed my life for the better.
I regret writing the earlier review, and reading it now is strange - I am no longer the person who wrote it. It was an accurate account of my reaction at the time, but I am so grateful that I did not heed my own advice.
I have the Solution in my life that she promised, and the world is truly a different place - a much warmer, friendlier, more intimate and more spiritual place. I no longer need to overeat compulsively, distance myself from others, hide my authentic self from the world, or drag others into my personal melodramas. Most importantly, I never feel completely lost - I always have my connection with myself, as near at hand as a moment to breathe and check in.
Just as Laurel's thinking and methods evolved between The Solution and The Pathway, Laurel has continued to evolve the work, as neuroscience has continued to advance, confirming many of her theories about how people can deeply change. I hope that she will release an updated version that shows these connections.
I am still concerned about the cost of the work, which only begins when you purchase this book. However, Laurel Mellin now has a cadre of mentors who have completed the training, and who are leading small groups to bring this method to more people. In the end, the cost ($300 or so for the Solution Kits that she mentions, plus about another $2,000 in professional support, spread over three years) seems like a bargain. The Solution Kits come with membership in a free web support community, and I found my own ways to keep the costs down while getting the support that I needed in the difficult parts of the work.
In short, I now heartily recommend this book and this work to anyone.

(All recipes include both charcoal and gas grill variations.)

more than just recipes.......2006-07-23
This is a very informative and useful book. It contains lots of information about the different cuts of meat and what to look for when buying food for grilling. The separate instructions for gas or charcoal grilling are helpful, too. Lots of little hints to help the novice or expert griller.
Every recipe is perfection.......2006-06-16
We're long time subscribers to CI magazine, and got this book as a gift a few years ago. We've cooked many recipes out of it such as the kebabs (chicken and beef), portabello mushrooms, beef ribs, and cornish game hens as well as their basic burgers and steaks. And true to form, CI has us cooking (in this case, grilling & smoking) to perfection every time. The how and why in each case educates us further and often comes up in conversations with friends and family. Excellent guidebook!
Would Have Been 5 Stars, but..........2005-08-09
The only reason I did not rate this book at 5 stars is that I purchased a very similar book (which I did rate 5 stars) along with this one. The other book, "The Cook's Illustrated Guide to Grilling and Barbeque: A Practical Guide for the Outdoor Cook," was copyrighted in 2005, whereas this book was copyrighted in 2001. I expected the two books to be somewhat different, but the 2005 book appears to me to be an updated and revised version of this book. Both books are excellent, but I have found nothing in this book that the 2005 book doesn't contain. And, as you would expect, the 2005 book has more pages, more recipes, and more instructions and information than this 2001 edition.
I have rated the 2005 "Illustrated Guide..." so I'll not repeat that here. I see no reason to purchase this 2001 book, so long as the 2005 "Illustrated Guide" is available.
The best grilling.......2005-07-28
This is a superb "how to" book! Every recipe I've tried has worked flawlessly, and the complete discussion for every type of food gives me complete confidence to do the best job I can. A definite "must have" for anyone with a grill--I'd bet even a "grillmaster" would find useful info in it.
Before reading this book, I thought I knew a lot about bbq........2005-05-22
I have been cooking on an outdoor grill or smoker for over 30 years. Most of what I know I learned from others or made up as I went along, and I've been very satisified with my results. But I felt I was in a bit of a rut, so I bought this book.
I'm amazed about how much I did NOT know about grilling. I have made it a goal to try out a recipe or technique from this book each time I use the grill to expand what I know - and the results are incredible. The best whole-roasted chicken I ever made was the first time I used the recipe here: incredibly juicy and tasty due to slow cooking ("grill roasting") with indirect heat and some smoke chips. But the second one did not come out as well. Interestingly, the writers of this book had the same experience.
The thing that makes this book great is the research that went into it. They systematically try out all the variations they can come up with, tell you about which ones did not work and why, then nail down the best techniques, and present them here. The recipes appear to repeat a bit, simply because they have one for charcoal and one for gas. The two are similar, but though it takes more pages, it makes it much easier to follow through the steps to have separate recipes.
Aside from recipes for cooking meats, there are a number of dry rubs, marinades, sauces, and salsas to get you started. Don't buy this book for quantity of recipes - there are bbq books with more - but instead for the quality and details of the techniques, which are so important for outdoor cooking.
Even if you think you are an expert, it is very likely that you will learn new techniques, and improve your existing ones, in a way that will make you glad you bought the book.

Book Description
Real barbecue has little to do with a grill and a bottle of KC Masterpiece; it involves marinating the meat and cooking it for hours over indirect heat with a generous slathering of any number of sauces. Killer Ribs: Mouthwatering Recipes from America's Best Rib Joints offers up the most authentic recipes for savory ribs, from bona fide barbecue joints from all over the United States and Canada. The author visits the hidden treasures to reveal their mouth-watering secrets. Killer Ribs highlights the regional differences in barbecue style and ingredients. Texans love beef, pork spare ribs rule in Memphis, while Kansas City serves up pork babybacks. While New Mexico and Arizona like a good chili powder rub, devotees in North Carolina prefer vinegar-based sauces, and the Pacific Rim goes for a rub of spice and pepper and a honey-ginger sauce. With scrumptious, backcountry recipes, professional secrets to make those perfect tender ribs, and 50 full-color photographs of the featured restaurants and their delectable ribs, the essential Killer Ribs will undoubtedly fire up the art of your barbecue.
Customer Reviews:
mostly incomplete.......2007-04-12
I thought the recipes were very incomplete. They are restaurant recipes giving by the restaurants. I found the book useless was very disappointed.
I didn't even keep it. I throw it away. It was not worth any space in my cookbook collection.
A little dissapointing, especially for a recipe book!.......2007-03-14
This wasn't as good as I was expecting considering I first heard about this book at an awesome rib joint (Jones, Seattle, WA). A lot of the "secret" recipes are vague ingredient lists with no specified measures. The recipes that aren't vague usually are not the "signature" sauce or rub of the restaurant. Pitmasters NEVER give away their secrets, so I thought this would be a great opportunity to try out recipes from the best of the best. What sounded too good to be true WAS!
The best part of this book are the individual stories behind the different joints, but that's probably not a good sell for a cookbook when the stories are better than the recipes.
If yer looking for a sauce or rub "bible" this ain't it, escpicially if this is yer first book about "real" barbecue!

Rick Browne and Jack Bettridge lived almost a half century deprived of a true culinary experience, "Q". It was love at first bite. Soon they set out on the adventure of a lifetime, the quest to, eat barbecue, visit, photograph and write about barbecue contests. "Before it started, we didn't know barbecues; we didn't know the crazy, charming, giving, irascible, gifted, hilarious, corny, cunning people who make it happen."
"We burned to continue our education back in the land of "Q". And then one of us ... came up with the bright idea that if we did a book about barbecue we could tour all of the shrines of barbecue all in the guise of work." "Soon we were pilgrims to many strange lands: Owensboro, KY; Memphis, TN, Fort Bragg, CA; Lynchburg, TN; Arlington, TX and Kansas City, MS." "As well as enjoying some of the best eats of our lives,..... we learned a thing or two. We learned that barbecuer's are some of the friendliest, most generous people in the world."
Rick and Jack share some myth and facts concerning the history of barbecue. "Politics and barbecue have a long history as bedfellows in the United States. Office seekers, especially in the Midwest, soon figured out there was almost no better way to draw voters out to rallies than the come-hither smell of smoking meat." "Q was on hand at most of the great moments in American history. " In 1978, Memphis held the world's largest barbecue contest.
Jack and Rick kindly share recipes and techniques from the experts. Included are recipes for marinades and rubs. They discuss pork, beef, chicken and mutton. There are photographs of each contest Jack and Rick visited. I was particularly interested in the information and recipes for Owensboro, KY, the Barbecue Capitol of the World.. I find mutton delicious but a rarity in most areas. The restaurants mentioned are some of my favorites, Moonlite, Old Hickory, George's, and Shady Rest all have delicious barbecue and at the top of the menu is mutton. Hey Jack and Rick next time your down this way check out Ole' South. Barbecue.
Just looking at the photos and reading the recipes made me long to get out the charcoal. I've made note of where the contests are located. What a great way to spend a summer, traveling from one contest to the next. This book will make a great gift for Father's Day, after all most southern dad's love to fire up the barbecue pit. However, I can't let go of my copy, I'll be busy using it, plus I'm sure it will have sauce stains.
