5 out of 5 stars Good intro to a traditional technique.......2005-07-14

This is, as the title promises, a very good foundation for any artist interested doing traditional egg tempera painting, or for any art lover who wants to know more about the medium itself. It covers everything from mixing gesso accoording to traditional recipes, to framing and care of the finished work. For me, though, that's the least of it.

First, it's an incredible reference on the tools and techniques of water gilding. It limits itself to gilding as it works with tempera painting and frames, but is exhaustive within that scope. It discusses everything from the laying the bole ground to burnishing, then tinting the finish. Although this emphasizes traditional tools and materials, the author isn't afraid to use modern aids, like rubber cement masks. By the way, anyone who wants to use scrapers to smooth the gesso ground, as this author suggests, should consult a woodworker's guide for directions on sharpening the scraper. A little extra effort up front makes a world of difference in the scraper's performance.

Second, it's a fascinating historical document. Although the book was written in the early 20th century, most of its recipes go back to medieval times, maybe earlier. Therein lies a potential problem, though. Back then people were a bit less careful about pigments like lead white and mercury-based vermilion. Since egg tempera doesn't keep well in wet form, the artist must use many pigments in their hazardous dry form. The practitioner should review the safety of pigments and techniques very carefully before trying the directions in this book.

Still, it's interesting to read about the daily practice of art, including the artist's relationship to a pigment supplier, from a time so different from our own. The recipes, too, have an antiquated sound. I'm not sure I've ever seen sandarac, for example, let alone the range of colors all identified as "vermilion."

This isn't just history, though. It needs some adjustment for modern safety and materials, but it's a very practical guide to everything there is to know about the many techniques in tempera painting.

5 out of 5 stars Everything You Wanted to Know About Tempera..........2002-01-02

There are not many books available on tempera painting mainly because few artists these days have either the time or the patience to grind their own pigments and mix them into a binder. For anyone who does have such an interest egg tempera is a fascinating and beautiful medium to learn. Anyone who has ever tried to scrape off dried egg yolk from a plate will soon realize how incredibly durable a binder it makes for a painting medium. The Practice of Tempera Painting covers a lot of subjects in-depth. Everything from preparing the surface, pigment to egg to water ratios, discussions of various pigments to actual instructions for the traditional hatching and cross-hatching brushstroke technique is shown.

The only section readers today might want to supplement is reading up on a more up-to-date book on pigments. Many of the pigments discussed in Thompson's book, while still available, are now known to present health risks. Modern pigments that are safer and just as lightfast (in some cases even more lightfast) are now available that Thompson and painters of the 1930's didn't have. Other than that one caveat this book is a great introduction to egg tempera painting.

5 out of 5 stars Invaluable Book!.......2000-08-15

This excellent introduction to egg tempera is invaluable to oil painters as well. Thompson's writing is filled with humor and wit, making the book very readable.

I was delighted to discover that, unlike so many books about painting techniques, Thompson's is clear and thorough without being a condescending "how to" manual. It also avoids being mired in footnotes and tedious tangential detail. It is obvious that he speaks from the perspectives of both painter and scholar. The only drawback is that the reproductions are in black and white, but as this was standard when the volume was written it is forgivable.

This book will prove informative for artists, teachers, and museum professionals (I am all three) who are in search of solid information on tempera painting. Look no further and enjoy the read!

4 out of 5 stars Famous artist is a murder victim.......2001-03-15

In this book, part of the Bed-and-Breakfast Mystery series, Judith and her cousin Renie take a break to go to their old family cottage. While there they visit their neighbor Riley, who is a renowned artist. Shortly after their visit, he is killed and is found lying in tempera paint. There are a lot of neighbors who are possible suspects along with girlfriends, a crooked agent, and clients who have purchased Riley's paintings. One of the most delightful characters is Abbot N. Costello, a neighborhood police investigator who couldn't solve a crime if the perpretrator gave himself up. As usual, Judith comes up with the answer to the crime and she comes close to being killed herself before the murderer is brought to justice. Is it just me or does Judith spend more time with her cousin than with her new husband? It's hard to believe that she's as crazy about him as she claims and yet spends so much time away from him.

4 out of 5 stars Another Fun Renie and Judith Mystery.......2001-01-29

Renie and Judith plan on spending a weekend at the Grover family's rustic cabin. Alot of maintenance is needed, and the girls are looking forward to spending time at a place where there are many fond childhood memories. While going for water, they visit with a neighbor, the famous artist, Riley Tobias. Soon after they leave, Tobias is found strangled. Renie and Judith now have to add another task to their weekend, finding a murderer. The characters in this mystery are very well drawn and colorful. The mystery was easy to solve, but I had such a good time reading it, I didn't care.

4 out of 5 stars Palletes of Personality.......2000-07-19

Once again Renie and Judith have hit the road, this time to a familiar family cabin (mentioned in earlier episodes.) As usual, the women get more than they counted on, with a parade of personalities as subtly blending in to the rural locale as the blue-greens of a fine Monet.Following this mystery was enjoyable, a journey I look forward to taking with Ms Daheim again.

5 out of 5 stars An American Classic Artist.......2005-10-22

I found this painter sometime in the 1970's where Purdue University gave him a show. Fascinated by his "clown" picture I soon found a large print of his "Parakeet" and not being able to afford the price of that print, I did it anyway.

Vickrey is simply a classic American Artist. A major artist of that century.

Glad he's still living and hoping to see more of his work in a new book.

          Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Good Introductory Text.......2002-12-03

This book is an excellent modern alternative to Daniel V. Thompson's useful, but dated book, which I find mired in 'thirties philosophy and art theory. Ms. Sultan lays out the materials and techniques well, not only her own preferences but also other possibilities. I was pleased to see a small but handy section in the back where a number of diverse egg tempera painters with widely varying styles spoke briefly about their own approaches. This is a very good introductory text.

5 out of 5 stars The Only Current 'How-To' for Egg Tempera Painting.......2001-10-17

While I own and have read Daniel V. Thompson, Jr.'s book The Practice of Tempera Painting I'm glad I have Sultan's book as well. I don't know how hatching and cross-hatching can be construed as "uninspired" since this is the traditional method egg tempera artists employ to create paintings. Neither is Sultan's book a "dumbed-down" instruction manual of Thompson's book. The Luminous Brush is a complete book on egg tempera painting itself. The one main technique Thompson's book covers which The Luminous Brush doesn't is gilding.

The Luminous Brush will appeal to people who appreciate the many step-by-step photos showing how to prepare your own grounds, the amount of pigment paste to egg yolk to water ratios, etc. The author provides exercises for the reader using ink and/or gouache for practicing egg tempera painting techniques so the transition to egg tempera itself will be easy. There are chapters on painting landscapes, skies, rough and smooth textures as well as a chapter showing new experimental approaches to egg tempera painting by guest artists. There is a bibliography and sources selling pigments, grounds or other materials for use in egg tempera painting.

Unless you are planning to employ gold gilding in your egg tempera paintings or want to read chapters on which paint pigments to buy that were current as of 1936 (some now known to present health risks and made obsolete by safer, lightfast alternatives) The Luminous Brush will be just fine for anyone wanting to get started.

          1 out of 5 stars Keep Looking!.......2000-07-18

This book by Altoon Sultan is basically a dumbed-down version of Daniel V. Thompson, Jr.'s excellent introduction to the medium in his book The Practice of Tempera Painting. While photographs abound, they are most useful in displaying Sultan's uninspired use of hatching and cross-hatching. If your looking at acquiring this book because you are a Sultan fan, it might be just the thing to help you understand how her images are made. If you want a good instructional book on egg tempera, keep looking!

5 out of 5 stars A Luminous Book on Egg Tempera.......1999-12-22

In this luminous and exquisitely presented book Altoon Sultan vividly conveys a sense of the richness inherent in this ancient medium. Sultan eschews the pitfalls of most art instruction books that purvey pat formulas, which lead merely to a hobbyist's superficial and empty technique. Rather, while providing a rigorously detailed and clearly delineated process--each step accompanied by lush, illustrative photographs and a very directly written text--Sultan encourages and leaves room for individual adaptation; which is precisely one of this work's greatest strengths. The text is further amplified by a rich array of the author's own masterful works, as well as samples ranging from the first century A.D. to the present. She includes abstract work that is predicated on spontaneity and improvisation, properties not generally associated with this medium. This is in fact a large and generous work that conveys the author's articulately expressed sense of excitement at the possibilities she has discovered in tempera and eloquently invites us to explore.

5 out of 5 stars A Long Neglected Topic, and a great medium.......1999-12-22

As a teacher and painter who works in different mediums including egg tempera, I implore others teaching to acquire this book for the classroom as well as private study. I have long been a fan of Tooker and Wyeth, and I'm pleased to see Altoon Sultan spreading the word via work and intelligent instruction. It is wonderfully economical as well!

Kelsh presents more than 40 new picture-taking scenarios--the types that fill everyone's photo albums. 5 out of 5 stars Have to have.......2007-07-24

This is amazing book. In simple language, it explains how to make good photos with any camera. There is no deep technical analysis (Like Ansel Adams in "The Camera", "The Negative" or John Shaw's Nature Photography Field Guide). There are no guidelines how to improve your creativity (like "Learning to See Creatively: Design, Color & Composition in Photography or Photography and the Art of Seeing" by Freeman Patterson or "A Visual Perception Workshop for Film and Digital Photography" by Bryan Peterson). This books are great but doesn't answer simple way for simple questions (like questions many my friends asked me). Book covers most common shooting situations and explains how to avoid common mistakes and make your photo looks much better and more interesting. I red a lot of books on this topic (good books), but they mostly dedicated to people who want to become professional photographer or photo artist. Even I already know all ideas presented in this book, it was helpful for me to read this.

5 out of 5 stars My new favorite author.......2007-05-14

Nick Kelsh's books have seriously inspired me to kick my photography skills up a notch without overwhelming me. I saw the titles to his books in Lasting Memories magazine and knew I wanted to read them. They are a quick read which was encouraging since I have a newborn and started with his book on how to photograph babies. I'm already putting into practice what I've learned from all of his books and I think my photos are greatly improved.

4 out of 5 stars This books offers those little tips on getting the shot........2007-03-06

This book offers some great tips on getting the perfect shot to taking pictures. Gives lots of examples of possible shots you have taken and then explains how the shot could have been better. I recognized some possible photos I have taken and went back and reshot it to find that I did like the authors recommendation better. I now am finding myself looking at everyday life events and saying how that would make a great picture. I now carry my camera around with me all the time waiting for getting that perfect shot.

5 out of 5 stars Practical advice for regular people from a seasoned Pro.......2007-02-08

This book is a quick-read that is filled with golden nuggets of advice for beginning and intermediate level photographers. It is NOT a book filled with technical jargon or gear. What it does have is clear explanations of what will make you a much better photographer.

I liked this book so much that I bought ten copies and have given them away as gifts to friends and family when they get new cameas. When I ran out of those, I bought another ten. This book should be included with the box that every new camera comes in.

5 out of 5 stars scrapbookers take notice.......2007-01-15

Snapshot photographers rejoice! Here is a book that ignores the in depth technical jargon or the "photography as fine art" posturing and highlights the fun in photography. I found this quite by accident am so glad I did. Each two page spread shows first a typical, boring, often poorly lit or composed, common snapshot and then, the results you can get with a few simple corrections. It really helps you "see" in a new way. No more Christmas tree shots that are indistinguishable from every other year's picture. No more every-one-in-the-family-in-a-straight-line-on-the-lawn. If you'd like your pictures to move from okay to wow, this book will make a difference.

The Wildcats could easily have joined the legions of cheap x-men ripoffs and raced toward extinction with, well, superhuman speed. But it didn't. With none of the restraints that Marvel put on its writers (main characters must never die, the basic premise of the book should never evolve, heroes are always incorruptible), "Wildcats" evolved in a number of unexpected directions, with the formation of political and personal alliances between heroes and villains, and the complete lack of pretension or orthodoxy in the runs of writers Joe Casey and Alan Moore. This is the final volume of the former's run on the series, and to describe the plot any further would do the reader an injustice. Suffice it to say that the characters from the previous volumes of the series finally begin to find their purpose after the end of the war, and it's not AT ALL what you'd expect.

It's not entirely clear whether Washington Post reporter Joel Achenbach is a journalist who writes with humor or a humorist who engages in journalism, but that hardly matters. It Looks Like a President Only Smaller is a witty chronicle of the 2000 presidential election that bears no resemblance to The Making of the President. As Achenbach writes in his introduction: "There was no intention at any point to document comprehensively the events of 2000; these are word-doodles, some marginalia on the historical record." The result is a fast-paced and funny account of the Bush and Gore campaigns.

Here's a (satirical) memo sent to George W. Bush from his advisors, right after John McCain beat him in the New Hampshire primary:

What did McCain do that we didn't do? The obvious answer is: He campaigned vigorously and honestly and openly, and told people what he believed. It was a brilliant maneuver on his part and we are kicking ourselves for not having thought of it first.... We have prepared a packet of three-by-five cards containing spontaneous comments that you may want to make.
Here's Achenbach on the Democratic candidate: "Al Gore, despite all appearances, is actually a human being. He's super nice. He does normal-person things all the time. He's only weirdly stiff, mannered, and mechanical on the exterior. You'd really like him if you were to spend twenty or twenty-five years getting to know him."

Some of the jokes fail, but most of the time they're right on target--and in any event, it's usually only another sentence or two before the next punchline. Readers who laugh at the humor of Dave Barry will also enjoy Achenbach, especially if they don't take their politics too seriously. --John J. Miller

            Book Description

It Looks Like a President Only Smaller is the hilarious, eviscerating diary of one of the most amazing contests in American political history -- from the presidential primaries in New Hampshire, to the fat-cat convention parties in Philadelphia and Los Angeles, to the bizarre vote-counting debacle in Florida. The diarist is a veteran Washington Post reporter, satirist, and explainer of the inexplicable.

This is his summary of the historic Supreme Court decision in Bush v. Gore: "In keeping with the Court's ambition to provide an unambiguous and unanimous decision in Bush v. Gore and thereby legitimate the outcome of the 2000 presidential election, we present herein a majority opinion signed by Justices Rehnquist, Scalia, Thomas, O'Connor, and Kennedy, with a partial dissent to the majority by Justices Rehnquist, Scalia, and Thomas, a full dissent by Justices Stevens, Souter, Breyer, and Ginsburg, a partial dissent to the full dissent by Justices Breyer and Souter, a needling, invective-filled dissent to the partial dissent to the majority opinion from Scalia, and a spitwad [attached] from Justice Stevens...The Court will note that it did manage on Tuesday afternoon to assemble a respectable 6-3 majority in favor of the Chinese take-out."

As Joel Achenbach trails Campaign 2000, he channels the unfocused rage of the street protesters, gleefully infiltrates celebrity-choked Hollywood bashes, and roams the remote highways of the battleground states. Whether ruminating on the Confederate flag controversy in South Carolina, rewriting breaking news in the form of a le Carré novel, or mimicking the dyspeptic voice of the editor of the (fictional) newsletter Chad Watch, Achenbach fashions a page-turning comedy that takes the measure of America at the millennium.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent In Spite Of Flaws.......2002-08-01

Achanbach's little book is as funny as it is easy to read. It's the kind of book your sarcastic roommate might write if he road along on the press bus during a national election. Of course, the books strength is also it's weakness, since Achenbach seems to know as much about the history of politics and elections as your sarcastic roommate might. His observation that the campaign was vapid and devoid of ideas was accurate but his assumption that it was unique because of this is faulty. Likewise his assessment of the candidates, summed up by his title, is correct but his assumption that in the past the country sent moral or intellectual giants onto the campaign trail is flawed. Every politician is considered a pandering vapid idiot in his time, and is excoriated by his enemies for his intellectual and moral deficits. It is possible that Gore was more boring than average and W was stupider, but you could not discern this simply by reading accounts written during elections. Achenbach is on target when he suggests that the candidates do not represent the voters, but again he is off base when he tries to explain why. He would have us believe that it is the independent voters that vote for the likes Nader and Buchanan are to blame. It is not those who actually vote for leaders they admire who are the problem, it is those like Achenbach who dutifully pull the handle for whomever the party bosses select. Achenbach is no Jack Germound, to be sure, and this book should not be seen as a serious, detailed explanation of the nuts and bolts of the campaign. It is not. It is a playful romp, a witty, vicious assault from a neophyte. There is nothing wrong with that. It's darn funny and quite a pleasure to read. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars A baked potato for us all!.......2001-12-01

It Looks Like a President is a humerous look at the 2000 presidental race beginning with the New Hampshire primaries. Having mercifully been able to block much of that from my memory, I found Joel AChenbach's witty play by play of the shenenagians much more informative then I remember the media's reporting at the time to have been. This book is worth the read just to read Al Gore's impassioned call to open all the foil reserves so every American can have a baked potato with all the trimmimgs! A wickedly funny look at a time that needs to be remembered so its follies will not be repeated. And a reminder that we need to be looking seriously at limiting campaining times....put limits on how EARLY a campain can start.

4 out of 5 stars Trying to make light of dark events.......2001-09-20

This is a light book and can't get a heavy review. It does manage to earn four stars, but basically for one reason: It made me chuckle out loud a couple of times. That last star is always tough to earn. For a humor book, it would have needed to provoke some big belly laughs and provide some really interesting new perspectives, but at least for me it didn't go that far. In fact, if I didn't basically like the perspective, it could have dropped a star.

The book is organized in four sections covering the primaries, the conventions, the actual campaign, and the rather bizarre recount. My capsule impressions are:

            1. Primaries: many serious elements, light humor
            2. Conventions: heavy sarcasm, but a little funnier
            3. Campaign: trying to be sarcastic, but mostly failing and relatively more unfunny stuff
            4. Recount: kind of wild and crazy, matching the reality, with a mix of serious and funny elements

Of course that's a very subjective evaluation. What I find funny might offend some other people, and vice versa. I felt there was a bit of evidence that the author personally prefered Gore, but it's actually possible that a Dubya-supporter would have felt the opposite. I probably laughed hardest at the jokes about Bush, but there were plenty targeted on Gore, too. And you can't be at all sure in a case like this. He may just like the politicians who provide the most amusing fodder for his humor columns.

Except for a few interstitial comments, the articles which were collected to make this book were written as brief columns expected to have very short lives, and he frequently comments how he his morning's work could be obsolete and unfunny by the time it was published on the Web in the early afternoon. Also, he didn't include all of the columns he wrote, so these are presumably filtered as funnier or more interesting than average. As far as I can recall, the only column I'm pretty sure I had read before was the one he wrote as the editor of the imaginary chad research magazine.

Given my usual verbosity, I'm sure you should be surprised to hear that's about all I can say on this book. Because of the mix of reality and jokes, I can't really guess which is which. I think that some comics do have deep insights, and there might have been a few flashes here, but not a whole lot. You might find the book amusing, as I did, and maybe not. I did feel that it accomplished it's primary goal of being funny, but humor is a funny thing.
            5 out of 5 stars Couldn't put it down..........2001-08-30

This book is hysterical! It needed to be written, although with all due respect, it probably wrote most of itself. (The truth, you know, is stranger than fiction...but not as strange as politics!)
I'm passing this book on to everyone I know...it's really saite at its best, by the Post's funniest "sometimes columnist."
