Book Description
When Col. Cliff Acree was shot down and captured on the second day of the Gulf War, Cynthia Acree began her own form of captivity at the center of an international media storm. This compelling memoir provides two very different perspectives of the war.
Customer Reviews:
Excellant book about an american hero..........2007-01-18
Addressing the memoir "The Gulf Between Us" by Cynthia and Cliff Acree is a bit difficult. It came out around 1998, and thus a completely different era than our current misadventure(aka quagmire) in Iraq. Since I am a moderate Democrat, I kind of have a bitter taste in my mouth when I think of the Bushes. However "Gulf" is really the story of the Acrees, and thus I do recommend this because these two are great people. Col. Acree is a hero because he withstood torture and would not reveal critical intelligence to the Iraqis during the first Gulf War. His wife is also a hero because despite her own pain, she fought to get better recognition of POWs and their families. The stuff that Col. Acree had to go through is heartwretching, and it is a miracle in itself that he lived to tell us. For that, I salute him. The book also makes a good move in mostly avoiding political matters(both parties seem to be portrayed well), but Acree should not have kept mentioning how he wouldn't even give in to the demand that "he call [President George H.W] Bush a donkey". Well Bush 43 is certainly worse than that for treating de facto POWs in Gitmo the way he has, but again Acree couldn't have forseen that, so he gets a pass. Recommended reading. Should be read by any who believe torture is a good way to get intelligence(Acree never gave up anything that was good) and by those who believe in the Geneva Conventions, and of course by those who want to admire true American heroes: our soldiers.
A Love Story of Miracles. Faith, Honor and War!.......2006-11-24
I truly believe that there are never any random accidents of fate at work in our lives--everything happens to us for a reason, even if we do not understand why! Reading the inspiring memoir "The Gulf Between Us: A Story of love and Survival in Desert Storm" you cannot help but believe that prayers are truly answered; and that there must be a divine purpose to our lives even if it is not understood at the time of the events. One thing is evident; this book is about the power of faith and love.
The Husband and wife writing team of Cynthia and Col. Cliff Acree have written a duel storyline that is more than just about war--it is a love story. They chronicle the compelling emotions and the events surrounding the Colonel's capture and his time spent as a POW during Desert Strom. It is a triumphant tale of courage from both Cliff and Cynthia as they endure, survive, suffer and embrace once again. They both have this underlining strength and faith that comes through very loud and clear.
No matter what you have read about the experiences of the POWS in Desert Storm there was much more to that story that was left untold --or incorrectly reported. Some of them were subjected to brutal beatings and life threatening treatment. Colonel Acree was subjected to a harsher treatment than others for various reasons, including his strong loyalty and patriotism and the fact that he was a Marine pilot and company commander. He would not give an inch or compromise on his core values and for those reasons he had to endure the brute force of his Iraqi capturers. Truly an American hero!
Equally courageous and inspiring is the corresponding story of Cynthia's experiences, as she has to face all the uncertainties of the situation. Working from a base of great faith and personal strength she takes positive actions and organizes a movement to get world attention focused on the fate of all the POWS and MIAS. Her personal and emotional journey did not come without its own form of pain.
We learn a lot about who the authors were and how they met and became high school friends. The background story gives us a look inside their relationship and what kind of people they were prior to the life changing experiences of the war. I think this adds greatly to the power of their story. These two individual souls seemed destined to become spiritually connected in the very fabric of their lives. This book is more than a war story it is about their own personal spiritual journey. It is a story that will inspire many others and perhaps change a few lives along the way. And maybe, that was one of the divine purposes that the universe had in mind for all that they went through. I know that I was touched by their story on many levels. I am a better person for having read their book.
It is a well-written, easy to follow story. The authors share a huge part of themselves with the reader and that honesty comes through and makes you feel good about them as people. The MWSA gives this book its highest book rating of FIVE STARS. I also add my personal endorsement and recommendations that you buy and read this book.
Love and Terror in Desert Storm.......2005-03-22
I found it hard to read much of what Cliff Acree wrote, because he tells us how badly he was treated while he was in captivity. He was tortured; badly beaten, denied food and in so many ways humiliated and ill-treated. Still, he never lost his faith and dignity.
Since Cliff Acree was a higher ranking officer, it was obvious that he was better informed than his fellow prisoners of war. When he refused to share any of this information with his captors, it made Saddam Hussein's men treat him harsher than many others.
Col.Cliff Acree decided he had to lie to Saddam Hussein's men, and that may be a reason he is still alive. If he had kept on refusing to speak, the ill-treatment may even have been worse. Another reason he is alive is: When Saddam Hussein used the captured pilots, as well as members of the SAS and a CBS TV crew as human shields, only two instead of five bombers attacked the building they were kept in. The bombers didn't bomb the part where the cells were sited.
One of the comments in the book also made me think of Captain Scott Speicher, since he is the American air man that Saddam Hussein most likely kept.
ONE OF THE BEST POW/WAR STORIES.......2003-08-21
I have read many POW stories since WWII and this is one of the best. The perspective is a little different as the wife talks a chapter about what is going on at home and then Col. Acree talks about his ordeal while a prisoner of war in Iraq during Desert Storm. The internal fortitude and resolve of Co. Acree is astounding and what he went through is heart rending. At the same time his wife did much in creating a force of help and an attitude of compassion among the entire citizenry of the U.S.A. You will rally 'round the flag after reading this and appreciate the downfall of Hussein!
An honest review from a grateful reader.......2003-03-30
When I first bought this book, I thought it would be something I MIGHT pick up and read...if I didn't have something better to do. Being a new Marine spouse in a post-9/11 world, the story was, at least, an intriguing one, and any new information I could get was a bonus. I had NO idea what was in store.
This is a story of patriotism, of survival, of fear, of strength, of new and old friendships, of new and old adversaries. A story of triumph and most of all an enduring love; Cindy and Cliff's story is one that will touch anyone.
It is written in perfect format as Cindy chronicles her daily life in unison with what happened to Cliff thousands of miles away in captivity. It demonstrates how even in the most grim of circumstances, the spirit perseveres and is, indeed, made stronger. From a military point of view, their amazing story can also serve as a reference for families on how to handle difficult situations, when their loved ones' lives could be at risk. It certainly has for me.
I am a better person for having read this book. I am better Marine spouse after reading this book. It truly is one of the best investments I have ever made. It demonstrates, beyond a doubt, the Honor, Pride and Commitment that signifies the Marine Corps, and all our servicemen and women. I appreciate the Acrees sharing their story with the world.

Book Description
This moving account tells the story of how MS, an unpredictable disease, has sent one woman on a different path. Writing with great clarity and the ability to meet the issues around MS in an honest, forthright, and engaging style, Catherine Edward grapples with the day-to-day truth of the disease, all the while maintaining her courage and sense of humor. To assist her memory of the progression of the disease between visits to her doctor, she wrote diary-like reports. After receiving one set of notes, her doctor wrote back to her, suggesting that she write a book from which others could benefit.
Book Description
Celiac disease is a condition that presents itself with a variety of symptoms including but not limited to diarrhea, constipation, vomiting, headaches, malnutrition, and the list goes on. Members of the celiac community share their stories, tips, poems, and recipes in this book containing 94 different pieces to help those with Celiac and those who have been misdiagnosed with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).
Customer Reviews:
A Personal Touch on Celiac Disease(the #1 Misdiagnosed Intestinal Disorder).......2007-05-07
This is a good book and is very knowlegeable about the Celiac Disease.
Like Lurking on an Internet Support Group.......2006-11-20
This is a collection of personal experiences with celiac disease. The writers are ordinary people who either are gluten-intolerant or live with someone who is. The accounts are interesting.
If you ever spent time in an internet group for a health-related condition, you will find the general tone of the stories familiar, except that they do not attack or otherwise comment on each other. The newly-diagnosed celiac will find encouragement within these stories.
I learned from the writers that some celiacs get sick from trace amounts of gluten, even from a single crumb that gets on their food. This is alarming for those of us who sometimes eat out or who live with someone who loves wheat-based foods. Even occasional consumption of gluten can prevent a celiac's digestive tract from healing.
Although the book was published in 2004, some claims are already out of date. Several people stated that McDonald's fries are gluten-free, but McDonald's now warns that the fries contain traces of both wheat and milk. So readers need to supplement this sort of book with current research.
Personally I became impatient with the people who felt traumatized when they had to give up wheat. (They gave up certain other grains too but these were not missed as much.) I am allergic to over a dozen different foods and if I could eat everything except wheat, rye and barley, I would be thrilled. There were a couple of writers who did not tolerate dairy along with gluten, and I could relate to them a bit more.
The best tip I found in this book was to look for celiac websites before you travel overseas. Many countries have celiac support groups and supposedly some of them list restaurants that can accommodate us. Also, I found a URL in the book for a list of "contaminated products" which should be useful except that it hasn't been updated in four years.
This book is easy to understand. It should increase awareness of celiac disease. For those who need information on coping with this condition, it should be very helpful.
Excellent!.......2005-10-12
Superb for anyone diagnosed with celiac's disease or dermatitis herpetiformis or anyone with undiagnosed intestinal problems. As it says on the cover "Millions have it and don't know it." I was one of those undiagnosed for probably 10-15 years.
Divided into chapters, you can select the ones most relevant to your symptoms, situation, or issue. Personal stories are written by every age group from kids through seniors, with valuable information also provided.
Diagnosed folks will find it an inspiration; family and friends can be shown relevant parts to better understand the necessity for a gluten-free lifestyle - and what it feels like to make that change; and people with intestinal problems can raise questions with their doctors based on what they've learned.
The only improvement I would suggest is a glossary of websites for celiac's and DH support and information at the end. There are a couple of them "hidden" within the stories and foreward.
Good for sufferers.......2005-07-06
The book is a good read for sufferers needing support. It gives various scenarios, symptoms, and suggestions from those who have been mis-diagnosed for as many as 30 or 40 years. The book does not, however, have much technical discussion of the disease or the protocol for treatment nor the prognosis for recovery or cure.
Great Book - Covers all the bases.......2004-08-05
I got this book last week and couldn't put it down. After a long struggle getting doctors to believe I wasn't crazy my IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome)was finally diagnosed as celiac disease. It was wonderful, comforting and reassuring to read stories from so many others who have gone through what I went through.
The book is extremely well-organized with lots of tips and tricks to help make gluten-free living easier. There are practical tips for traveling, eating out, setting up your kitchen, and planning vacations among other things. It addresses issues that seniors, teenagers, college students, parents of kids with celiac, and young children would face. It even has a piece written by a six year old about their first gluten-free Halloween.
This is the information you need that you will not get from your doctor who has never spent a gluten-free day in his life.
I loved this book and highly recommend it to all those with celiac whether you've just been diagnosed or have had it for a while.

Pretty good for beginners.......2006-12-06
I would recommend this book to someone who is not familiar with Indian cooking but enjoys the cuisine. It gives a basic idea of Indian cooking methods and Indian spices....people can play around with it a little to come up with variations on their own. I've cooked almost 50% of the recipes in it and have been satisfied with the result on 75% of them....not a bad record.
In case you're wondering, this review comes from an Indian who bought this book as soon as she got married to obtain a few Indian recipes. But now, I just look at the book to inspire me with new ideas.
The Complete Book of Indian Cooking.......2002-12-18
Originally published in 1995, this book was updated in 1999. My wife, who is in the Navy, found it in Singapore when her ship visited there. It is a wonderful book with delicious recipes, well explained procedures and clear illustrations, that calls for easily accessible ingredients -- no need to go to the non-existent "Indian foods store" all the other cookbooks send you to. Recipes are detailed and well-explained. I have over fifty books on Indian and South/Southeast Asian cooking in my library (most of them gathering dust), and this is by far the best. I use it every week, and friends and work colleagues demand the recipes. This is a book for the beginner and pro alike. I lived in London for years and had a lot of curry, and the results of these recipes taste authentic and are uniformly delicious. A great book!

Excellent resource for cooking Caribbean cusisine.......1998-11-28
This hardcover reference is chock full of great recipes from the region. Although from Guyana, Pamela Lalbachan offers recipes from all of the Caribbean islands. Lots of great colour photos compliment this work. An excellent compliment to the web site "Recipes from Guyana and the Caribbean.
User review.......1998-05-23
A beautifully written and constructed book, containing every recipe from Guyana, Suriname, and from the Caribbean (U.S. French, Spanish, British, etc.) that you could possibly wish for; e.g. Souse, Pepperpot, Metagee, Jerk Chicken, Sancocho, Garlic Pork, Crab (& Calloo) Soup, Foo Foo, Cou-cou, Roti, Tooloom, Muzik Di Zumbi. The recipes are very easy to follow, even if you are new to this type of cusine. Full colour photographs throughout make the reading soooo satisfying .

The most authentic food you will cook!!.......2005-09-20
I purchased this book in the early 90's, being an englishman with a taste for Indian food and a flair for cooking. This has travelled with me ever since. I have used this book as a source for all of my indian meals and the recipes (and I have prepared man of them) are the most authentic dishes you will create. I cooked for an Indian friend a couple of years ago and after I had served him some of my onion bhajis, he paid me the compliment of telling me that they tasted exactly as his mom had prepared back in calcutta. The recipes can be daunting, with endless lists of ingredients - but find yourself a good asion food store and go to task - it's worth it!!!
Indian cook book.......2005-05-19
We cook out of this cook book allot and each page is scented with the spices from YEARs of serious use. I have a great cook book collection and this is the BEST book of the lot. The recipes are detailed and specific. This book is worth whatever you have to pay for it. Enjoy and cook.
A first class book.......2001-09-06
This book is excellent, I cannot recommend it highly enough
The recipes are clear and easy to follow.
Every recipe ALWAYS turns out very well
Very Highly recommended
I have tried all receipes from this book...THE BEST.......1999-11-16
This is the best cook book I have come across. Everything is just right, except I cannot get a copy of it. Most libraries have it.
A user friendly book of good recipes.......1999-05-01
I have tried many of the recipes in this book and I've never been disappointed. Some of the recipes look overwhelming because of many ingredients but the author has kept the instructions simple and to the point. This book is perfect for newcomers to Asian cooking but it is also good for those that are more experienced. My only complaint is that the index could be expanded to make it easier to look things up.

Never fails.......2007-09-06
I have had this book for a while and love it. The recipes are easy to follow and the food always tastes good, and once you get the hang of it you can improvise them to suit your taste. However I think the meat recipes are better than the vegetable ones.
A picture book........2006-03-21
As many have said, the book itself is of very high quality, with some of the best photography I have seen in a cookbook. The positive qualities end there. The actual food is dull in appearence, bearing little or no resemblance to the vibrant photographs. How it looks isn't important, however; the taste is what matters. In this department, "Complete Indian Cooking" (which is really neither "Complete", nor "Indian", nor "Cooking") can be charitably described as a miserable failure. The taste is as bland as the appearance, and the times and temperatures given for cooking often leave the food either under- or over- cooked, rendering the lentils hard and the chicken rubbery.
I would strongly advise against buying this book.
Generally correct recipes and enjoyable food.......2004-08-31
First off, we bought this book because it was the only Indian book we could find with a recipe for Gulab Jamun. That brings up an issue of mine with the book, however. The author refers to things by their western name, and only occasionally by their proper name. Gulab Jamun, then, is called "deep fried milk pastries" in the book. It sort of loses its authenticity this way. Additionally, I have yet to visit an indian restaurant which has their menu in english. And not for lack of trying, really. We do indian a lot. This means, though, that if you're looking for your favorite indian dish from a restaurant, you may be stuck reading through the book finding a recipe that seems like it's the one you like.
The other issue I have with it is it appears that there was very little quality assurance involved with this book. The recipes, it seem, have all the ingredients listed to the left. However, as you begin to go through the recipe, you will find that some of the ingredients listed are simply not used in the recipe. This is not because they aren't used, I think, but because the author simply forgot to include them.
I think most cooks however, can overcome that. The pictures, as others have mentioned, are very nice. The paper is also very nice. Perhaps not something you'd really want to have in the kitchen (for fear of damaging it), but nonetheless would make a great addition to a library in general.
The quality of the recipes themselves is also up for subjective interpretation. Most indian food (per tihs book) is not particularly complicated. There's a lot of ginger, coriander, cardamom, turmeric, and lemongrass involved. Generally this is pureed, added to an ingredient, and then it is either made into a soup (such as the halibut soup early on in the book), or into a grilled item (such as the tandoori chicken later in the book). The recipes themselves are very short. Often four paragraphs of 2-3 sentences each. "combine these four ingredients, puree, set aside. combine another four ingredients, prepare, then add previous four ingredients and cook on high heat in a wok." It is certainly very possible to cook with such recipes, but not customary by the cookbooks (of many cuisines) we are accustomed to. I think this may also be part of the omissions mentioned above.
The food tastes fine. It is definitely indian, but has a very strong thai influence, it seems. With all the ginger and lemongrass, that's not hard to understand.
I am generally happy with my purchase, but might go for a more traditional black-ink-on-white-paper book if I were to consider buying another indian cookbook.
Works every time.......2003-12-12
This book provides basic receipes for indian food. They taste great and are easy to follow. If you purchase a few basic spices most of the receipes are yours to make at a whim. Penseys.com is the place to get the needed spices. My brother and his wife recommended this book to us and it just wonderful. Buy and enjoy.
We LOVE this cookbook!.......2003-11-02
I completely disagree with some of the other reviews regarding this cookbook. My husband and I are crazy about Indian food and try every restaurant we can find. Disappointed with a recent restaurant in Monterey California, we found this book and began cooking our own. Not only did we find the recipes simple to follow, we regularly comment on the fact that it looks JUST like the pictures - and tastes even better. I highly recommend it.

Book Description
"Mrs. Ortiz can always be trusted to treat her subjects accurately because she has lived and cooked in the countries she writes about." -- Associated Press
"An eye-opener for people who are unaware of the diversity of that region's cooking, which draws on European, African and Asian influences. Caribbean cuisine is documented in 450 recipes organized in 14 chapters. The region's distinctive ingredients, cooking methods and utensils are thoroughly explained by Mrs. Ortiz." -- Kansas City Star
"Scores of recipes that will convince you that, yes, there is something new under the gastronomic sun . . . . I wish space permitted me to tell you about the lamb stew with red kidney beans from Guadeloupe, a marvelous recipe for a large Edam cheese stuffed with beef from Curacao, skewered beef kabobs with pineapple, tomatoes, onions and peppers from Anguilla, a pork and spinach dish from St. Lucia and a Camaguey meat salad from Cuba, but I'll have to refer you to the book for those items." -- Josef Mossman, Des Moines Register

Well researched and clearly presented.......2006-09-16
This classic cookbook, which was originally published in the early 1970s, offers a generous amount of information on ingredients, cooking methods, and equipment plus a large number of recipes that illustrate the great diversity of the region's cooking. Ms. Ortiz explains how foods and cooking techniques from widely scattered parts of the world have been combined with local ingredients to produce an exciting and eclectic cuisine. I found it especially interesting to read about the ways in which different islands interpret the same dish and how some islands have dishes that are uniquely their own. This book was a labor of love for the author, who worked on it for six years. If you can locate a copy, it would still be a worthwhile addition to your kitchen library.
I also recommend "The Cooking of the Caribbean Islands" (Time-Life Foods of the World), for which Ms. Ortiz was the consultant.
Well-organized!.......2001-01-14
This pocket-size book offers a concise and wide variety of traditional Caribbean food and drink recipes. Ms. Ortiz has certainly done her research. If you like this book, you will love the recently released "A Taste of the Caribbean" by Angela Spenceley. Features cooking tips, information and nutritional count of countless exotic fruits, vegetables and spices, and charming blurbs deciphering local island lingo. This book is a must for any good cookbook library.
A wonderful mix of caribbean cooking from all the islands........1999-08-04
When I bought this book I was searching for receipes from Puerto Rico. Being Puerto Rican and having been raised in the United States, I learned to love all the native dishes that my mother would fix for us. As a new military bride I soon discovered that even though I knew how to cook some of the staples i.e. arroz con gandules, carne guisada, etc., there was a lot I didn't know. My mother was not much help because she never measured anything, just threw it together and it was delicious and she was not nearby so I could observe and learn. I remember yearning for mom's delicious "sancocho criollo" and not knowing how to cook it. I went searching for receipes and came upon this wonderful book. It is full of great receipes and resources as to where to find ingredients throughout the USA and Canada. I have received numerous compliments for my "Empanada de Pollo". I have also learned to cook and enjoy foods from other islands such as "Pulpeta" from Cuba and "Flying Fish Pie" from Barbados.

Excellent Indian Cookbook.......2006-04-26
I love Indian food, like most people love Chinese food. If you are a lover of Indian food, this is a great cookbook for you. This is not my only Indian cookbook, but it is the most complete Indian cookbook that I have.
In the introduction this book covers the basics of Indian regional cooking (the difference between northern and southern cooking), the composition of a meal, preferred drinks with meals, and the most common ingredients used.
The recipe in the book for Paneer (which is extremely easy) turned out great the first time I tried it. I was also pleased with all the other recipes that I have tried in this book. There is a very easy to follow bread section in this book that is particularly useful. The Mango Ice Cream is really good as well.
This book is well constructed of glossy paper and a sturdy cover. There are many glossy photos in this book that make preparing unfamiliar dishes much easier.
If you love going out to Indian restaurants, this book will teach you how to make great tasting Indian food in your own home.
mouthwatering.......2000-05-28
this is my favorite indian cookbook. every dish has an appetizing illustration. i have tried about a dozen of its recipes so far and they are simple to cook and delicious, rating at least a 3 out of 4. i wish it was not out of print because it is a perfect gift for all occasions. it has made me able to cook my favorite recipes at the local restaurants, and just as deliciously. it helps to have an indian grocer nearby, too, because some necessary ingredients are less common in mainstream supermarkets here, but that would change if people tried more indian cooking, because every recipe i tried in this book was out of this world.
The best compilation on Indian cooking I have ever seen.......1998-12-29
This book provides the best and most complete selection of Indian recipes I have ever found. The recipies are easy to follow and well presented. Photographs of each dish help us novices to understand how they should look, as well as taste. Even the nan bread was a success. I highly recommend this book
