    Book Description

As the British commitment to Desert Shield escalated from brigade to division size, an enormous logistic and personnel effort was required to bring units up to full combat strength. The author, now Chief Instructor of the Royal School of Artillery, has produced a vivid account of modern military operations under the most difficult conditions, heavily illustrated in color and black and white.

1 out of 5 stars Not very interesting........2003-11-26

This book is OK if you want to read about one person's experiences without having those experiences tied into the larger story of what's going on. Basically, "I went here. I did this." Not very interesting at all.

    2 out of 5 stars Not what I expected.......2001-08-07

While there are some good quotes in this book, I don't think this book is really about the Gulf War. It is more about a soldier's struggle to deal with his duties. I will not criticize the author for his views on the army and the war itself, but the book really sheds little light on the war. The author is an artist educated at Columbus College of Art and Design, from my reading he is against the war. There a couple of good photographs but most of them are of troops and trucks sitting in the desert. This is not a book for someone looking for a comprehensive look at the Gulf War.

5 out of 5 stars Gritty and honest, this book is well produced........1998-09-22

The excellent photography and open writing of this young man creates a book worthy of any coffee table. This book offers a unique view of the war that is far from the CNN portrayal we recieved on television. Good photography makes it a powerful document of his experience.

Synopsis for Diary From the Desert

Enter into the life of Mary E. McFarland as she leaves her family farm in Iowa and vividly recounts her experiences in the Army through her letters home. Diary From the Desert is not a military account of the weapons or maneuvers of war, but one woman's personal view of survival in the Army. As you follow her through basic training, military intelligence school, and then deployment to the Gulf War, you will discover who she is and become a part of the strong family that shaped her values, beliefs, and longings. Her letters are filled with a breadth of emotions from falling in love and the agonizing separation of newlyweds, to having artillery rumble right over her head. She powerfully describes her fears of war and her feelings of isolation as she describes what it was like to be the only woman among 300 troops.

Mary E. McFarland Stabe entered into the United States Army in 1989 at Fort Jackson, South Carolina. She was eventually stationed at Fort Hood, Texas, where she was married and deployed to Saudi Arabia during Desert Shield and Storm.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Great format idea.......2004-01-21

Mary Stabe has written a very interesting and emotional story about Desert Storm, the effects it had on her by way of the letters she sent home to family. It is not a story about the gory details of war, but rather her perspective of life as a woman soldier doing her duty to her country. I wanted to know more about what happened when she returned to the USA.

5 out of 5 stars An inside look........2004-01-15

I have always wondered what it is like to go to boot camp or to war. How is one treated? What are the conditions? What is involved in the training? Are women treated differently? I'm glad to have found a book that has answered these questions from a personal perspective. Very facinating! I appreciate a book that can capture the everyday goings on and the emotions that occur. A page turner. Don't pass this one up!!

5 out of 5 stars A womans view of war.......2004-01-02

I read and throughly enjoyed this entertaining and engrossing story of what it was like to be a woman serving in the Gulf war and in the Army in the early 1990s. Mary had to endure hardships and prejudices and managed to come through it all with a new appreciation for life, family and home.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone, it's a page turner.

5 out of 5 stars Diary From The Desert.......2004-01-02

This is a wonderful book that depicts the life of female American soldier. Through her letters home you get a chance to see just what it was like to live through the Gulf War. This book isn't a tactical history but an emotional history. She shares with us the details of the friendships she developed with her fellow soldiers and the romance that blossomed with Jason, now her husband.

      Book Description

In April 2003, I said goodbye to my husband and children before leaving for Kuwait on a 12-month hardship tour. It was to be at least six months before mid-tour, if leave would be allowed by then. Checked in, and caught Lufthansa out of Frankfurt. Ever have one of those dreams in which you taxi forever and go nowhere? This was one of those off the end of the earth type experiences.

With that, U.S. Army Physician Holly Doyne departed Germany for an assignment to Camp Doha as Command Surgeon, ARCENT-Kuwait, for what became a prolonged tour. This is her record of that time. It is about battling with the heat and the dust in the desert. It is about ordered chaos and confusion tempered with caring. It is a warm and lively account by a determined and compassionate physician who went to conquer, assigned to a location where making a difference really mattered.

      Book Description

The diary of a child in the Armenian Genocide. An unusual narrative, it descibes the fate of thousands of Armenians who were sent not to Der Zor in 1915, but to the wastelands south of Aleppo, as far as Maan and Es Salt in Jordan.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Provides understanding of the middle east mentality.......2004-10-27

This is a must read to understand how the different cultures in the middle east think. It is a human drama of survival against all odds in a hostile environment. After reading it you have more insight into what is happening now in the middle east than by reading any newpaper or watching TV news.

5 out of 5 stars The Armenian Genocide.......2004-06-12

This is an incredible story of the Armenian genocide. It is an eyewitness account of the horrors of the Armenian genocide of the 20th Century. But, beyond the horrors of the atrocities, what is most amazing about this story is the strength of the human spirit and of a family trying desperately to stay alive.

5 out of 5 stars Personal Armenian holocost memoir.......2003-10-01

The Armenian holocost was the first of the horrendous genocides of the 20th century. The author then aged 15 writes a personal memoir of his families deportation in 1915 from Turkey to Jaresh, Jordan where they lived until the allied victory in 1918.

The book is the story of an upper middle class Armenian family living in eastern Turkey whose life is turned upside down when the government of Turkey embarks upon a diabolical plan to rid Turkey of all Armenians. It traces them going through the shock and travail of leaving their old life behind to become penniless refugees in a foreign land.

It is unfortunately a not too uncommon story for the 20th century but because it is written from the vantage of a 15 year old living through these events, it is unique and very compeling.

The book was originally published in Armenian in 1945 and this is the english translation which is being offered to the readers since the renewal of interest in genocide studies in the last few years of the 20th century.

                4 out of 5 stars 4.5 Stars--Short but pithy & seeks balanced view.......2006-11-18

This matter-of-fact book describes the invalidation process (i.e. invalidators) including causes ( p. 79: "Usually people are mean for one of three reasons: 1. To get their way, 2. Because someone was nasty to them, 3. Because they don't feel good about themselves, p. 80: "Invalidators usually look big but feel small, & p. 81: "If someone is invalidating you, he or she has probably been invalidated in the past"), reasons it is self-defeating, p. 81: "Invalidation works in the short run, not in the long run. You can win a lot of battles but lose the war"), & coping methods ("confronting, repeat that please, tell the whole truth, mirror the projection"). The challenge is to not catch the contagion since p. 60: "You cannot lose touch with your own conscience without losing touch with others, because your conscience is the bridge that connects you to others." It relates logic and feeling with some pithy observations: p. 78: "You can always tell the truth by looking at your feelings: `I feel embarrassed,' `I feel angry that you said it that way,' `I feel put on the spot.' No one can argue with the way you feel, because (right or wrong) it is the way you feel."

I found Chapter 4, "What do we do about it?" most helpful. An insightful & useful example is: p. 78: "MIRROR THE PROJECTION: When someone accuses you of something you didn't do, check to see if he or she has done it. When someone threatens you with something, threaten that person back with the same thing. (Chances are he or she is threatening you with what he or she is most afraid of.) When someone accuses you of not liking him or her or of being prejudiced, guess who doesn't like whom? Guess who is prejudiced?" For a humorous take on the topic, see Xavier Crement's "A**hole No More.

That's what I have to say about this book, after having been raised in the Dale Carnegie "How to Win Friends and Influence People" and Maxwell's "21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership" School of human relations. That school of thought prescribes that you treat others with respect and dignity, expect the best of others, protect others, and lead through positive example.

What lead me to this book is not everyone responds to the above, and whenever I encountered deception, insincerity, or deceit, I always assumed it was a result of my personal leadership shortcomings.

After reading this book, I think I've experienced my share of invalidators, both those I've worked for, and subordinates (who attempt to use the invalidation techniques described in the book to subtly manipulate). And in retrospect, I've probably been guilty of some of the invalidation techniques described in the book.

Just as Carter states in the book that some people have personality disorders, and some people are criminals AND have personality disorders (i.e. the former doesn't excuse the latter), he also makes the distinction of those who unintentionally slip into invalidation behavior, and those who are hardcore, guilt-free INVALIDATORS.

BOTTOMLINE: I'd highly recommend this book to anyone trying to understand others, whether for leadership or just to improve personal relations. It's a quick read and Carter's writing style is engaging and entertaining while remaining of topic.

5 out of 5 stars Not just for victims!.......2006-05-17

Most the reviews on this site say things like "now I know all those mean people suck and I am a poor victim - thanks Jay" I would, however, like to thank the author of this book for pointing out that I am mean. Sure other people in my life are mean to me and control me, but I already knew that now didn't I. What this book taught me is that meaness is a circle; and I am in it constantly. I have to be the change I want to see in others. To meet mean with mean is well... just a nasty situation. So thank you Jay for giving me something to consider before making the choice to invalidate others. I can now change the world, because I can recongize and change me and my behavior.
I have found this very book to be a good way of dealing with mean people I love. If the oportunity arises, I give them a copy. I believe that most people are good people with bad habits. This book gives them a way to understand a highly misunderstood but very common bad habit. I have had very positive results giving this book away. So go get a few copies and give them to your dearest "invalidators". (PS. read the book yourself first)

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful, insightful little book!.......2007-10-02

This book really helped me to recognize & somewhat understand "invalidators" as the author refers to them. I've met many and was married to the king of invalidators for over 6 years (felt like DOG years).
This has helped me to identify the behaviors & ensure I that I don't participate in that sort of behavoir or tolerate it from others.

5 out of 5 stars To level with someone while still taking the high road..........2007-07-12

There were so many times while reading this book that I thought to myself, "holy sh##, that's why so and so is the way that he/she is!" It gave me a little more compassion towards the invalidators in my life and taught me about the cycle of cruelty and invalidation. This book is a fast, easy read. Every once in awhile I go back and re-read certain parts just to keep it all fresh in my mind (or if I start to lose my tolerance). If everyone read this, I think the world might be a little different and we'd treat each other better as human beings.

You must read it! If you have ever been invalidated by someone close to you then this book is for you. WARNING! This book gives logical reasons that prove the old saying "It takes one to know one."
The book is light reading. I could have read it faster but I finished it to 2 1/2 days; that's coming from a slow reader.
This book will have you saying, dag that's why so and so is that way and yup that makes perfect sense and now I know what to do.

                Book Description

Children need to learn at an early age that their actions will have consequences. Negative actions having negative consequences. They must learn to take responsibility for these actions. And to know how one "seemingly" little thing you do can affect so many so greatly... They need to learn and experience respect, caring and love both for themselves and others. We all need to work together on solving these problems.

Violence is an extreme form of "bullying." A worse case scenario. Most of the time these kids started out being picked on themselves. In my book we call this the "BULLY CYCLE." Bullies creating more bullies. Becoming a bully as a means of protecting yourself (or so you think) ... hoping if you are the one causing the pain, you will never again have to experience it yourself. They feel so bad about themselves and think that controlling someone else will make them feel better or help distract from their own problems.

Children today feel numb ... some have been bullied to the point of feeling nothing. They are withdrawn and hopeless. If all kids could understand how to accept themselves and know that they're "OK", there wouldn't have to be any "Bullies" or "Victims".

This book helps parents, teachers and children give kids the skills they need to deal with BULLIES and maintain healthy SELF-ESTEEM. It is intended to help both the bullies and the victims feel good about themselves, thereby lessening the recent violence we've experienced in our schools.

1 out of 4 kids will be bullied this month. IT'S TIME TO DO SOMETHING!

5 out of 5 stars "Taking the Bully by the Horns" HELPS VICTIMS OF BULLYING.......2005-03-26

Take time to read "Taking the Bully by the Horns." As a teacher & child advocate I can tell you it will give you an insight to bullies, victims, & reactions. Physical, Verbal & Mental Bullying are covered.

Children who are being bullied mentally are under the *control* of the bully. They are confused & looking for a way out. As the same with Adult Bullying (Dr. Carter's best-seller "Nasty People"), some bullies keep us so wrapped around their finger we don't always recognize it so readily!

The book is written for ease in understanding; young people can tackle this book with success, learn why's and how's of bullying, and learn that people who are bullied don't have to be "victims," and actions--not reactions--can be taken to improve situations. This simply written book can be an effective tool against bullying and at the same time provide an insight at to why young people turn to bullying.

YES, both Victims AND Bullies have low self-esteem. Arrogance should not be mistaken for a "high self-esteem." Someone who has a "good" self-esteem has no need to CONTROL. - Dr. Jay Carter

The book contains chapters to help both the victims and bullies. Anybody who has actually READ the book knows the book does not teach you how to BE a victim. It teaches that people/kids don't *have* to BE victims, while offering helpful insight to both handling/stopping the bullying and improving self-esteem throughout the entire book.

2 out of 5 stars Frankly, I was very disappointed.......2005-01-07

The games bullies play are described nicely, presumably so that the reader can recognize when she is being bullied -- in case your child hadn't noticed, I suppose. Some reasons why people act like bullies are listed, which mainly focuses on the disproven hypothesis that most bullys have low self esteme -- actually, most bullys have over inflated self esteme. Oh, yes, and there is a chapter on how to be a victim. Throughout the book, the author promises (repeatedly) that advice on how to actually handle the bully will be forthcoming.

However, that is not the case. The only advice given is one brief sentence saying don't get angry, don't hide, do confront the bully. Now, I understand this is a difficult topic to address, but given the title of the book -- Taking the Bully by the Horns -- I expected more than that one weak platitude. The rest of that chapter addresses other topics, like use violence as a last resort, don't transport drugs, and be kind to siblings.

Some portions of this book are well written. This book might help your child recognize some subtle forms of teasing. For that, it gets two stars from me instead of one star.

5 out of 5 stars Great Resource for Kids & Adults.......2004-07-18

Have purchased both "Nasty People" & "Taking the Bully by the Horns"; really appreciate this simpler version of the concepts. The kid down the street sprayed my young teenage son in the face with some chemical on the bus. His usual reaction is to strike back or to strike out at the next kid who crosses his path. This is helping him to see how inappropriate & contagious this behavior is, and how he can control it. Thank you!

5 out of 5 stars Take the bully has helped my child tremendously.......2000-04-18

My child has come under attack from other children at her school, and becoming aware of this book and listening to the advice offered was the best help we could of hoped for.Her self esteem has been boosted and she is now aware that it is not her that is the problem but rather the other children who have the real problems.I would like to personally thank Kathy Noll and Dr. Carter for caring enough to put together this much needed information. For us it has been a godsend! Thank you so much

                5 out of 5 stars Excellent *****.......1998-12-25

I felt this book captured a piece of society that has been grossly overlooked! Kathy desreves two thumbs up for her excellent effort to help those faced with these problems. She has given guidiance counslers a very powerful tool in empowering children of all ages to find the strength and know how in relating to bullies of all kinds, big and small, friend or foe. I highly recommend this book to anyone whose ever been, ever has, or someday may be bullied.

In most people's minds, there's a lushness to the flavors of India: all that spiced curry sauces that smell like incense when they're cooking and thick, flavorful chutneys in an amazing variety of colors, tastes, and textures. Foulsham's series brings the many moods of Indian cuisine to European and American cooks. Recipes use ingredients you don't have to order from Bombay and utensils you already have in the kitchen.

I was looking for a recipe that matched something I had in a restaurant and it was in this book. I love Indian food and this book has it all.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent for those who know Indian cooking techniques!.......2005-09-28

This cookbook is ideal for those who've watched their Indian mothers prepare meals but need some help in determining "exact measurements". The book does not describe technique very well, but after having seen my mother fix meals hundreds of times, I didn't need much instruction in technique. I needed help in ingredients and amounts. I modify the recipes in the book a little to more closely mimic my mother's cooking and have learned some new things along the way. I've found that many of the foods I grew up with in the cookbook turn out very well!

The index is a little difficult to sort through since various Indian foods have different names. Be patient!

I've used this book for a couple of years, and it has never failed me. It's the first and best idea-generator when I find myself faced with a hungry-right-now feeling/family, and a kitchen with not much in it. Got only three aging zuccinis and a potato? This book guarantees that you'll make something wonderful of it. One egg and a wilted broccoli stem? No problem. Guests coming in half an hour? Got it covered. Not only will they eat, but they'll eat well and be mighty impressed besides. The only investment required, besides the very modest price of the book itself, is a half-dozen basic spices - especially since most of the recipes don't require (or miss) meat. Cheap, fast, creative, delicious, healthy.... I could go on even further but will only add that this book is the one and only thing I actually missed when I left it behind in the process of leaving my husband! And I'm buying another copy today.

1 out of 5 stars Useless unless you like risks.......2004-09-11

I'm not sure why everyone gave this book good reviews. I know, it sounds like lots of bang for your buck--1,000 recipes! But they are packed in with no pictures, details, or descriptions. I don't know what I'll end up with, so I'm scared to try too much!
