A Great Read for Southerners or Civil War fans........2004-01-18
This is a wonderful Civil War book told through the eyes of William Daniel Dixon of Savannah, Georgia. It is a fascinating and detailed account of his journey from the coastal battles of the early war to the battle of Atlanta. If you are from the southeastern part of Georgia you will find it especially interesting to read about the battles and encampments around the Savannah area. Dixon recounts his personal exploits as well as his unit's: the Republican Blues. Compared to the fast travel and communications of today it is great to read about a time of letters, trains, telegraphs, long foot marches, and horse back jouneys.
The Blues in Gray.......2001-08-24
The Blues in Gray is a very readable account of the Republican Blues service in coastal Georgia with exciting battles taking place on the Ogeechee River at Fort McAllister south of Savannah, Georgia. William Daniel Dixon was 23 when he began his private journal which he kept throughout his Confederate Service. He was a native of Savannah and lived his entire life there. The editor, Roger Durham, has done an excellent job making Dixon's voice heard. I am Dixon's great granddaugher and am delighted that this primary material is available to readers and scholars.

KEEP LAUGHING DURING CHEMO.......2007-10-18
Fran Di Giacomo's book is upbeat and helpful to women going through chemo because "sisterhood is powerful" and laughter is great medicine. Her inspirational insights into cancer, remission and recurrence make living with cancer a bit easier. Women need to be more vigilant about their health care and know that ovarian cancer is too often silent with symptoms until too late to be effectively treated. By reading "I'd Rather Do Chemo Than Clean Out the Garage," women can learn what it takes to be tough and keep a good attitude in fighting cancer. Good thoughts, collective prayers, lots of food donations (as Fran writes about) and a sense of humor go far in the battle. Put this book on the reading list--for patients, support team members, gynecological oncologists and waiting rooms!
I'd rather do chemo than clean out the garage.......2007-08-07
I did not find as funny. It'e more about taking advanage of family and friends by chemo as a vehicle.
The book title is too harsh.......2007-06-22
I can understand the point of trying to bring smiles and laughter to a difficult situation. But the fact of the matter is that everyone one of us WOULD RATHER clean out the garage instead of doing chemo. I wish the title was different and then this book could be given as a as a "pick-me-up" gift to someone who is going through cancer treatment. BUT with the title as it is and some of the strong sarcastic comments in the book, it leaves you feeling uneasy about passing this book along to someone going through a life or death situation.
Not worth it.......2007-03-08
I purchased this shortly after being diagnosed with breast cancer at age 36. After hearing devastating news like, "You have cancer," I bought tons of books - informational, inspirational and this one. With the warning, "Do not read this book in the immediate postoperative period due to risk of popping a suture or staple closer," I thought this would be one of those "pick-me-up" books helping me to add laugh-therapy to my experience.
What I didn't expect was to be so appalled at this "Chemo Prima Donna" and using her chemo experience and cancer to guilt friends into bringing food and gifts to buying her artwork as part of "sympathy sales". Chapter 2, "Milking it for All It's Worth" about said it all. She even states, "You may declare me a shameless hussy and accuse me of abusing my friends..." Yes, that is exactly what I thought.
Were there parts of the book that made me laugh? After chapter 2 I kept reading hoping to find something that would have justified the $16.95 pricetag. After putting up with 3/4 of the book and finding only one or two very small things that were slightly funny, I decided it wasn't worth my time to finish reading it.
This book may be for some, but for many of us it's not. A good, fun, light-hearted book not cancer related is a much better investment.
Purchase with caution.......2007-01-11
I purchased this book for my mother, who is currently undergoing chemo treatments. Unfortunately, she had a very bad experience with her first cycle and is at a point where she sees nothing about chemo as humorous. After I received the book, I read through it and decided that it was not the right time to give my mom the book. In fact, she would much rather clean the garage than go through chemo. I had related a few of the insights to her, and she didn't appreciate any of them. As all caregivers know (now), each person has their own reaction to chemo - I believe my mom just wasn't at the right stage in her chemo to appreciate the intent of the book. I would suggest that persons purchasing the book seriously consider where the intended recipient is at emotionally in their treatment before passing it on.

Excellent! A must for all first-time mothers!.......1998-04-18
This book tells in realistic and compassionate detail (from a credible medical and psychological expert) what new mothers are sometimes embarassed or ashamed to admit was their experience. It celebrates the highs of motherhood and reminds the new mother of everything she has truly acomplished. Even if you are not having any ambivalence or stress from becoming a new mother, this book gives a wonderful and understanding portrait of what these early weeks and months are like.

A tool of self exploration and answers.......2004-12-18
If you are inwardly drawn to this book, I suggest you get a copy. Read it as an exploration into your Self. While you are reading it, be sensitive to your surroundings. See what happens within yourself as you absorb David's words. It was after I met David, sitting in several of his spiritual gatherings, that I discovered his book. I had experienced his spiritual transmission at several public programs. At that time, I had been searching for Something. I was aware of spiritual organizations and teachers, but I was turned off by their doctrines. "Joining" anything was repugnent to me. To me, restrictions were totally unbearable. As I was reading David's book, I had a very amazing experience. I read what I, in my being, already knew to be True, the Something I had been searching for was awakened. I also read with interest about David's life. The reading opened up issues that I needed to explore in more depth, in the depth of my Being, by meditating alone and being more in David's presence. Sometimes fear would overcome me (as I read), for what David was sharing (in his book) took me to places that were hidden for a long time. As my spiritual awareness has grown (over the years), so has my ability to understand David's words. From sitting in his company and reading his book an incredible spiritual realtiy has dawned. For some, this book will be an account of one man's spiritual journey. For others, it will convey the Truth they've been searching endlesslly for. Either way, everyone who reads it will receive a special Gift, one meant to be enjoyed at the deepest level of Being.
For the true seeker.......2004-10-24
I'm extremely grateful to have found this book. I've read many excellent books on spirituality and the spirit, but for me, this one is as much a meditation as a read. While sharing his personal journey, David Spero illuminates the reader's path, taking you within yourself to your own divine center. It's really quite an exceptional work. I recommend it most highly and look forward to more.
No better book on Enlightenment!.......2004-10-19
This book was wonderful! Filled with insight, wisdom and the fullness of David Spero's spiritual transmission, I have yet to find a better book on the topic of Enlightenment. Written in an easy-to-follow question/answer format, this book puts the reader directly into the topic being discussed and answers the core questions we all have as spiritual seekers. Whether you are just starting out on your spiritual path or are a seasoned veteran, you will want to make Spero's book part of your journey. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND BUYING THIS BOOK!
Beyond the Place of Laughter and Tears in the Land of Devoti.......2004-10-18
For a person beginning any path of spiritually and for people that are more advanced, following any path, David Spero's book guides one deeply into the Divine within oneself. Written with exquisiteness from His Divine Love, Intelligence, and Knowledge, its simplicity and genuineness makes it easy to follow; and the sweetness of His Transmission can be felt long after the book is finished.
When you're tired of searching..........2004-07-21
Join David Spero, fat and sassy on the lap of the Divine Mother, brilliant beyond all those advaitists aloft on their own petards. What else is necessary but to surrender to the corruscating waterfall of Aditi of Countless Names? She Manifests First and Cleans Up Last! Read Spero and glow!
Customer Reviews:
A very fun read!.......2007-04-04
It's nice to know that other people deal with similarly ridiculous situations on a daily basis! Just knowing that I am not alone in the unattainable goal of conquering Laundry Mountain is a relief! Jenn Doucette has peppered her book with lots of laughs and "Me Too!!!" moments. I have read the book twice now since receiving it hot off the press and I think I laughed even harder the second time (a good sign)! A sense of humor goes a long way in this journey called motherhood, without one bitterness may just set in! One suggestion, read The Velveteen Rabbit - especially with your kids - before and after reading The Velveteen Mommy, it truly adds to the enjoyment of both. I recommend this book for all of us who are getting worn with love, the love of our precious children!
Great For Moms!.......2005-10-31
It is certainly a truth that the Lord uses our everyday existence as a school of learning, so is the case in this book by author Jenn Doucette. In this work she shares the ups and downs of being a parent, the trials, the joys, the strain on patience, tolerance and strength and shares out loud what so many are screaming within, "Help me Lord!"
Lighthearted and always real, our author weaves God's wisdom into her stories bringing a sense of calm and peace in the whirlwind life of a parent. Many a mom will relate and draw encouragement and strength in reading this work from someone who knows. It's always a blessing to know that you are not alone.
A Refreshing Look at Mommyhood!.......2005-10-25
Like all busy moms, I tend to forget what is important in raising children ~~ and Doucette is here to remind me! This is a lovely book ~~ inspirational and funny in some parts ~~ and refreshing. This book is a Christian book and in some ways, it can be used as a Bible Study ~~ but I read it to know that I am not alone in the trenches of mommyhood!
Written with gentle humor, Doucette writes of her own trials as a mother with three youngsters under the age of five. She writes poignantly of her failings ~~ and she writes in a way that the reader can relate to ~~ it's almost as if she's in the room with you sharing her tales of woes and joys over a cup of coffee. As a mom of two very active preschoolers, this book is my "time-out" from their demands. It is just wonderful knowing that I can be a Velveteen Mommy and still be loved by God!
If you're a mother of youngsters, I would not hesitate in picking this book up! In fact, I would run to the nearest bookstore and see if they have it in stock ~~ you'll be glad that you did!!

A Must Read .......2005-08-27
A book to uplift and delight. Jenn Doucette uses humorous stories and biblical wisdom to show us we're never alone. God is with us through the joys and struggles of motherhood. He NEVER fails to pull us out of the "trenches of motherhood," and carry us though another day of laundry up to our eyeballs.
A REAL mom!.......2005-08-26
Hilarious! Touching! Real! These are just a few of the words describing this great book by new author Jenn Doucette. Jenn is a real mom who shares the ups and downs of family life that will have you alternately laughing and crying. A great debut!

It touch my soul when I was young, and when I review it in my mind it still touches me deeply
Mind-body connection.......2000-09-09
I read some passages from this book last night and was blown away. I have read the prophet and that is beautiful but this goes a little deeper. Makes you explore the conflict and violence within Life and Ego. Takes you to the moment of separation. In the face. Excellent. Be patient with yourself when reading it or you may get frustrated. A lot to chew.

Love, Laughter and Tears.......2003-10-07
Adela is a great writer, but this book isn't as good as "The Honeycomb". And, while it makes for entertaining reading, I seriously doubt that the superstars of the 20s or 30s were quite so open with her as she makes out. Worth reading.
She was there!.......2000-05-04
Quite simple, in fact, this review of A.R. St.Johns book. Not a classic, but something you ought to read if you are very interested in Hollywood and its population of stars... Rogers knew them all and she has a way to tell you about them, especially as being a friend of Valentino and a protector of Clara Bow. She had a long career with Hearst papers (and a friendship with him and Marion Davies)and was one of the first lady reporter to cover hot actuality as the Lindberg kidnapping trial. She likes details, but not always accuracy (several critics said so.) To know more about her, see her other autobiography, the Honeycomb. Quite a lady...

Depressed? Stressed out? This is a "must-read" book for you!.......1999-11-09
It was a nonstop reading. Who could possibly get bored with the thirteen cute, little pieces Virginia Skord presents here? She succeeds in carrying out the subtle nuances the original texts possess (I have read many of them translated into "modern" Japanese) into jargon-free English. What? Do words such as "medieval Japan" or "East Asian Studies" intimidate you? You do not see anything in common between your cultural background and the medieval culture from Far East? Hold the view for now. Read this, cry and laugh, and now you realize how common virtues can transcend the time, culture, or geography.

Book Description
Possibly the most famous and widely used resource in therapeutic bodywork (required for national massage therapy certification), this beautifully written, detailed, and reader-friendly picture of how and why the body responds to touch is both scientifically reliable and inspiring. Furthering the presentation of recent research in biochemistry, cell biology, and energy medicine in the Second Edition, this new update includes advances in neurophysiology and physics, reconfiguring knowledge of mind and body, from "microgenesis" to "quantum consciousness." A rare book that fits general reader as much as professional and student.
"An important and pioneering book. . . ."_Michael Murphy, author
Deane Juhan, formerly an Esalen trainer, lectures nationally and abroad and practices bodywork in Mill Valley.

A Wonderful Informative Book.......2007-05-13
This is a terrific book for anyone interested in exploring the human body. It's good on the details and good on the big picture. It's a fascinating and revealing reference work on the workings of the human body.
Review of Job's Body: A Handbook for Bodywork by Deane Juhan.......2007-03-29
For anyone interested in anatomy and physiology or alternatives to medicines alone this is a wonderful book to read and reference. It gives some excellent insights into healing by touch and bodywork a must for al types of therapists.
essential.......2006-09-09
this work is an essential addition to any practitioner's library who wishes to markedly enhance their understanding and communication of care to their patients. Juhan uses brilliant, in-depth scientific notation in an easy-to-read format. brilliant.
Complex, Eye Opening, Vital.......2006-06-15
If you are a doctor, physical therapist, massage or bodywork therapist of any kind with an appetite for in depth analysis and understanding of the human response to touch, this book is a MUST HAVE for you. It's technical and detailed, and it is also ground breaking, eye-opening and very exciting.
Juhan covers the topic of the human response to touch from the micro-cellular level through to system responses all the way to the origins of the body/mind split in western philosphy and the consequences of pharmaceutical dominance in health care on touch therapies. He introduces many new perspectives that bring a rich vitality to anatomy. He shows the interactivity - the interconnectedness - the interdependence of all aspects of the human body, mind and being. He presents some of the latest theories about how the body mind are integrated and communicate - Candace Pert's molecules of emotion.
Not only is Juhan's research fascinating and valuable to body workers, but also his method of inquiry, the questions he asks, and how he asks and seeks to answer them, are also very educational - modeling ways we can pursue the investigation ourselves.
Here are a few examples of the kind of insight that Juhan offers in the Third Edition:
Page 17
"This personal, sensory engagement with the self does not spring from a rebellion against scientific authority, but rather from a realization of the present inadequacy of that authority's conception of reality, a realization that is not contrived for the purpose of debate, but which is forced upon [us] by [our] own painful circumstances."
"When the conceptions of reality that we maintain do not square with the things we are experiencing, it is not because we are flawed or because our experiences are wrong, but because our conceptions cannot contain all of the facts as we perceive them. And there is no constructive way out of this crisis but to enlarge our sense of reality to include our actual experiences."
Page 142
"The goal of bodywork should not be to impose universalized standards of posture and movement upon an individual, but rather to help the individual to cultivate the mental awareness and the physical flexibility to continually adapt to the changing needs of the moment."
Page 184
"Muscles that have fallen into disuse and flaccidity just don't provide enough pumping action for these intercellular fluids to adequately feed and bathe the nerve cells, and so the general strength of their functions is diminished."
Page 412
"Subjective and objective are not two distinct ways I have of viewing reality; they are two sides of a continuous feedback loop which together make up that reality. How completely I sense my body and how I feel about it has everything to do with the particular course of events going on within it."
Job's Body: A Handbook for Bodywork.......2005-09-22
A bit on the technical side for other than those familiar within the medical field, but would strongly advise reading Job's Body for insight and learning about one's own self. A learning experience definately.
