Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource.......2006-08-24

I found this to be an excellent resource of quotes and motivation, far better than Ian Jackman's the Artist's Mentor. Peggy Hadden has really put together some profound quotes on all aspects of art and its process to help you in tight spots like inspiration, colour theory, planning, sketching etc.

I have searched through many online quotations banks before I bought this thinking I could short cut this book, but its not as easy as it sounds for you have to understand the context that the artist was quoted and what was his point and often, you don't know enough to make those connections.

This book allows a shortcut, a breviary, to great artists quotes. The ability to stand and learn from them and see and learn art from them. When the quote is not complete, Ms Hadden puts in the context. For each chapter she gives some context on why this is important also.

No one is an artist unless he carries his picture in his head long before painting it & so is sure of his method and composition.
Claude Monet, artist.

To me that quote and so many like that, helped me tremendously in my creative process. It's a rare gem. I found that her book on the Artist's quest for Inspiration was a good handbook to work with this one as well. Two fine books. I have not read the others. Remy

5 out of 5 stars Good book to understand what women want .......2005-01-28

It is an interesting book to read. It is not only informative and contains a lot of practical tactics in stealing a woman's heart, it is also very entertaining to read. From a woman point of view, many of the tactics appears constructive.

I have read other comments about this book, it is unfair to discredit this book if the author is divorced. A successful marriage cannot be brought about only by one party, right? Both parties count. This is the book that I recommand in any event.

1 out of 5 stars Beware of Illusions and falsehoods that seem 2 "make sense.".......2003-08-19

For all you guys out there who may be short, or not-so-attractive, or not a millionaire, please .. please .. PLEASE do NOT take this book as gospel.

It seems all too easy, doesn't it. It seems all to easy to buy into the notion that you MUST be rich, MUST be extremely good looking, or MUST be extremely high status in life to bag the babes you want. After all, it seems to make perfect sense, doesn't it? I mean, all the "studies" point to the facts of what women want, right?

          Not so fast.

First of all, let me make one thing very, VERY clear. Let's make a distinction. CAN money help you out with women? CAN being good looking help you out with women? Yes, of course they can. But are they absolutely *necessary* for you to be successful with women? The answer is a resounding NO! You are simply going to have to take the word of one who has spent 14 years in the field, "professionally" and successfully practicing seduction. ANY guy can be a success at getting women if he has but one thing: AN UNSTOPPABLE DESIRE TO LEARN WHATEVER IT TAKES TO GET THEM! Prove that to yourself. How many times have you seen guys who don't have looks or money, and yet they can hardly keep women away from them? What these guys have is not an esoteric secret, but what these guys DO have is an UNDERSTANDING. An understanding of how women work on the DEEPEST levels. Levels that are far, far deeper than that of wealth or good looks.

So might the studies in the book be "technically accurate?" Yes.
But if nothing else, understand this: there is a huge, HUGE difference between 'technically accurate' and REAL WORLD EVENTS. Always remember it.

Do yourself a favor and do a search on any books regarding NLP and Seduction. That's your starting point. Learn everything you can about it. If you do what I say, now, and follow my advice, you'll find yourself in the future one day, say 1 or 2 years from now, and looking far back on reading this book, while you are experiencing the realization of what rubbish it really was.

Trust the words of one you've not even met, but are only reading his words, now, on a page. You may not be rich. You may not be good looking. But you CAN GET WOMEN. And I challenge you to surprisingly find out the startling truth of that for yourself.

What you believe, will become your reality. If you want to buy, read and believe this book, then that will BECOME your reality.
Example: if scientist had never told people that the earth was round, they would still believe it was flat. Essentially, this book is doing exactly that; telling you the earth is flat. We've made a LOT of progress since then

You may not understand me now, but trust me, you will. Just keep searching.

1 out of 5 stars What the hell would anyone want with this book?.......2003-07-24

The message of this book is extremely simple. If you are short, bald, or broke, or some combination of those three, no woman will ever want you. Period. There is no question that the author is right, but that is all there is to the subject. If you like that statement so well that you want it somehow padded and puffed and fluffed into book length, then this book is for you. If not, then you know as much as a result of reading this review as the author knows.

One problem is that short, bald, and broke are all incurable conditions. Reading this book is not going to make you taller and it is not going to grow hair on a doorknob. I thought the author could add some words on how the undatable of the world could serenely accept their solitary fate and move on. But when I suggested this to her it was made clear this is an emotional issue with her BIG TIME. I can understand why she could not write about a subject which gets her so horribly upset. But the bottom line is, that important section is missing. No other author is honest enough to admit that there are men in the world no woman wants. This one admits there are men no woman wants but has nothing to say about how to feel wonderful about abysmal failure in such an important area of life.

The title should be What the Hell Do Women Emphatically NOT Want? More important, Why the Hell Would Anybody Want This Book?

My suggestion is, forget the book and buy a bottle of booze instead. It will do more for you. But it won't make you taller or more hirsute.

          3 out of 5 stars Valid points.......2003-06-20

As much as I hate to admit it, many aspects of this book ring true. As a man with average dating success I feel I now have a new insight as to why things went wrong.

Don't take this book as gospel, but be very wary of women who refute it or give you different dating advice. While women are generally well meaning creatures it has been my experience that women can't or wont admit what they really look for in a man.

4 out of 5 stars Reality Check - Let's Get To the Point!.......2002-09-04

As you read the other reviews for this book you will find many people who are upset with what the author has said in her book. Those people are missing the point of the book. It's just as ugly and simple as this: everyone has standards and the people who have the most to offer (in terms of looks, financial assets, personality, etc.) are in a position to demand more than others. Whether you like it or not that is the way things are.

Yes, I know you talked to lots of cute women (7's & 8's) who claim they are not as materialistic as the book suggests. I just have two things to say about that.

First, if you lower your standards enough (not quite as cute or whatever) you can ALWAYS find someone to date. The rest will reject you based on exactly the criteria listed in this book. (Although you may be short selling yourself or sabataging yourself by not setting your standards high enough.)

Second, if you read the letters in women's magazines and their posts on the internet you will find women have two basic complaints about men:

          a) Too many men act like doormats. Women aren't looking for guys who bend over backwards to please them, they want men with some spine!

          b) The guys that they sleep with (ie. the good looking guys with plenty of money to flash around) usually turn out to be jerks. Notice I said these are the guys they are SLEEPING WITH! As their looks begin to fade and they get a little older they will eventually settle for someone a little safer, a little nicer, a little... boring.

The question is, which end of this deal do you want in on? Do you want to be the nice safe guy who gets the left overs or the guy who gets the action? If you want to be the one getting the action then you need to be aware of the criteria women use (consciously or subconsciously) in selecting the guys they will sleep with or bond with, and those things are spelled out very well in this book.

I'm not saying you have to like it, I am saying this is the way things are. The information in this book can help you do a LOT better with the ladies.

5 out of 5 stars Great chick lit.......2006-04-05

WIRWTDID is from the team of Yvonne Collins and Sandy Rideout and it is
hilarious. I will also admit to not knowing what a focus puller is but by the end
of this book, I know that job plus a whole lot more about the behind the
scenes parts of movie making. But fair warning: since this is a chick lit style
book, Roxanne has to wait until almost the end of the book to get her man.
It's fast paced, it's funny and it's well worth hunting down.

5 out of 5 stars terrific insightful character study .......2005-11-30

In Toronto, though one of the lowest in the film-making hierarchy as a camera focus grunt, Roxanne Hasting dreams as she has for two decades since she was thirteen of directing her own movie one day. Still she knows she must pay her dues and so goes about her grunt work of insuring the camera focuses on the actors.

During a break from her job, a miracle happens as Rox is given the opportunity to direct a short The Lobby, a screenplay written by her best friend Libby. However, Rox quickly finds the duel roles as director and cinematographer overwhelming and her experiences lacking for either job. Still she will go 24/7 to insure she swims not sinks as this is a once in a lifetime chance. A second time may not be forthcoming if she fails this chance at achieving her dream and that of Libby's.

Rox's dream serves as an allegory that achieving worthy Big Hairy Audacious Goals means hard work that can interfere with other objectives especially in one's personal life, but if it is that important one will set priorities accordingly. Rox (and Libby) brings humor and eccentricity to the story as the wannabe director gives up much to accomplish her goal although some of the thorny folks she works with make even a dreamer question the price. This is a terrific insightful character study encouraging individuals to follow your dream.

          Book Description

What do women really want? Chocolate! But you already knew that, right? Everyone knows the delicious anticipation of dipping into a fresh box of chocolates...and so it is with this charming collection of cartoons by New Yorker cartoonist Donna Barstow.

Chocolate is on the minds of many ladies most of the time, and we're lucky that cartoonist Barstow has been willing to share her own obsession with it. Why do women crave it, anyway? Why is it more important than love? How many uses can one find for it? These and other questions may be answered - or not - in these cool cartoons about women and their not so secret madness.

Ranging from "laugh out loud" to "I gotta send this to a friend," the over 120 drawings here are New Yorker-type cartoons with a distinctive girly slant. The pen-and-ink line drawings with wash are reproduced well in this medium-sized hardcover. Quotations on chocolate from authors like Mel Gibson to George Bernard Shaw are also included, and an amusing foreword by Ruth Levy Beranbaum (author of "The Cake Bible,") proves she's a chef who can laugh at her own delicious words.

Chocolate! is the perfect gift or collectible for foodies, cartoon lovers, and, of course, collectors of all things chocolate.

5 out of 5 stars Nice collectible graphic novel.......2007-09-08

One of the other comments said the cartoons are like the New Yorker...so she didn't like this book. Well, I do like the New Yorker cartoons, so I loved it! But these don't toe the line the way NY cartoons do, so kudos to the author for taking on a topic that's feminine and feisty.

I also like that it's a hardback. I deserve it!

5 out of 5 stars They Want This Book!.......2005-01-12

What do women really want? They want this book! It's full of New Yorker style cartoons about a love in the lives of many women and men: chocolate. Although I personally "would not cross the street" for chocolate (a phrase I picked up from an Irish friend), I still find it very funny.

If you have any chocolate lovers in your life, this book is a MUST for birthdays, Valentine's Day, Christmas, your second date -- whatever! The only complaint is if I read it another time, I might start crossing the street, too.

          5 out of 5 stars Funny for men too . . ........2004-12-21

I bought this book for my girlfriend as a Christmas gift and nearly kept it for myself. The humor is top-notch -- every joke tickled my funny bone. And after laughing myself from the first page to the last, what do I have to say? Men really want chocolate too.

5 out of 5 stars Great gift idea.......2004-12-07

Perfect gift for the chocoholic. Clever. Artistic. And very funny. I not only laughed, I could practically taste the chocolate.

          5 out of 5 stars Sweet!.......2004-07-17

I'm a collector of chocolate cookbooks, so I had to take a look at this. There aren't any recipes, but the cartoons more than make up for that, and some of the quotations made me laugh out loud, too. Maybe it sounds weird, but I also like the smooth chocolate cover and the expensive feeling paper! I actually gave copies of this to 3 friends already, and plan to give more. I've never seen a book of cartoons just on chocolate before, and it's a great addition to my collection!

Page-a-day calendar from four of the hottest young female cartoonists working today, about four of the hottest subjects ever: cats, chocolate, shoes, and love! There are three times as many cartoons in this book - one a day, of course - than in most cartoon books, so this is a bargain and a delight. A real opportunity to look at girlie issues, and what makes women tick. From 2003, so it's impossible to find now, but you'll keep this calendar around for laughs that keep coming, and 365 cartoons in various styles that make it art.

                        Book Description

With wit, insight, and humor, Colleen McElroy tells of her journey to Madagascar for a Fulbright research project exploring Malagasy oral traditions and myths. Throughout, she interweaves traditional Malagasy stories.

4 out of 5 stars A personal account, but interesting and well-written.......2000-12-31

Yes, I fully agree with the previous reviewer from Louisiana. This is not a book for those who want to get to know Madagascar and Malagasy culture or history. At the most, in that direction, it provides some 'atmosphere' of Africa for those who have never been there. The book is indeed a personal account of the reader's feelings, as she rediscovered herself during her trip to that wonderful Indian Ocean island. Yet, this is a good subject, and the book is well-written, filled with thrill. I liked it. As long as it is presented as what it is and not something else, I recommend it to those interested in the former.

1 out of 5 stars Be aware of this book's true content.......2000-05-12

Over The Lip of the World is a FICTIONAL account based on the author's subjective experiences in Madagascar. It is not a recount of Malagasy folklore but rather a history of McElroy's search for her own identity as she looked for it on an island on the other side of the world. Persons interested in Malagasy studies should NOT buy this book; people interested in a black woman's personal history might find it more palatable than I did.
