Book Description

Once again mixing the tragic with the hilarious, the dead serious with the absurd, D.K. Tooker portrays the daily drama of naval aviation in this his second collection of true stories. He writes a fine yarn about what happens when planes collide, gas gauges show empty, airfields are closed, or the right training manual hasn't yet been written. Tooker's fledgling aviators are funny and his seasoned fliers inspiring.

People who fly will see themselves in these young heroes and hellions who flew for the U.S. Navy and Marines in Korea and Vietnam and Afghanistan. Everyone else will enjoy sharing in unforgettable experiences, framed in history, that happen only to pilots. Among the most memorable stories is the recounting of a large air raid at Sinuiju, North Korea, when Tooker himself learned he was not bulletproof. 192 pages. 30 photographs. Hardcover. 5 x 8 inches.

3 out of 5 stars Mixed Bag of Flight Tales!.......2006-06-08

Subtitled "More Adventures in Military Aviation," this book is a sequel to the author's SECOND LUCKIEST PILOT published in 2000 by the Naval Institute Press. It recounts various combat missions and other flights made by the author and other Marine Corps and Navy pilots from the Korean War to the fighting on Afghanistan.

To be honest, I can't rate this book higher than a "3." Some of the stories are interesting, some aren't. And, at $28.95, it's overpriced.

An optional purchase.

A really great book, though small. The author has a really good style.I will get his other book, since I enjoyed this one so much!

    Book Description

In this highly accessible book, a distinguished philosopher says current focus on the brain conceals the real powers of the mind. Edward Pols revisits one of the basic topics of philosophy: what is the distinction between mind and body and what is the relation between them? He disagrees fundamentally with the many contemporary philosophers who concentrate on the findings of neurophysiology and cognitive science and so look only to the brain for the causes and explanation of mind. Pols concedes the importance of such scientific studies but maintains that they focus on the infrastructure of mind and ignore the momentous difference between the infrastructure and mind itself.

Pols calls upon the reader to attend to mind itself as a concrete and experientially available reality. This kind of attention, he argues persuasively, reveals mind to be at once causally dependent on the brain and causally effective on the physical processes of the brain and the world. Pols also examines the hierarchical view of mind and causality first proposed by Plato and Aristotle, the supersession of that view by the received scientific doctrine of causality, and the mistaken denial of the power of the mind to know an independent reality--a denial that resulted from the philosophical doctrines about knowing developed in the era that began with Descartes and ended with Kant.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars A refreshing, naturalist/non-reductionist, view of our minds.......1998-11-01

Pols has done a remarkable thing here, producing an understanding of the human mind that (a) accords with much of common sense, (b) is fully consistent with up to date science, (c) gives a convincing account of it as a unique yet natural feature of the world, and, most importantly, (d) develops a convincing case for the sort of causation that human beings initiate when they act, including when they read and think. What is so impressive about Pols' approach is that it engages the reader precisely at the moment when he or she is doing the reading of this book, involving him or her in the task of researching the issues at hand and thus showing the reader's mind doing just what Pols argues it can do. Aside from that, Pols offers a superb historical account of some very serious and damaging philosophical ideas from Plato through Descartes and up to our day. Especially interesting is his rescuing the human mind from those who would consign it to a fate of unavoidable, persistent erroneous judgment, a kind of congenital impotence. This work, then, is an altogether wonderful philosophical achievement.

Empire and imperialism have returned with a vengeance—not as a set of ideas and practices to be exhumed by the historians, but as paradigms for twenty-first-century living. Harry Harootunian turns his unrelenting gaze to signs of the new imperialism in the world—from the United States’ occupation of Iraq to other supposed terrorist enclaves around the globe.

The arguments being made today for imperialism’s historical and contemporary value echo earlier rationales for modernization theory and its conception of “development” during the heyday of the Cold War. Harootunian decisively cuts through the layers to reveal that under the new clothes, it’s the same empire.

          Book Description

This book condemns neglect of macroeconomic analysis in designing Full-Employment policies. The money value of total domestic production rather than the price level should be the objective of a combined fiscal-monetary policy emphasizing low interest rates rather than low tax rates. Full Employment without unacceptable inflation or poverty needs radical reforms, such as labor-capital partnerships, low real wage rates offset by a universal tax-free social benefit, abolition of national insurance contributions, and highly progressive taxation of income and wealth for budget surpluses to redeem national debt. Free international movements of capital funds impede independent national reforms.

I watched the Alex Mack series finale (right before my cable went out, darn it) and then just three months ago I bought the novelization here at Amazon. I find the book to be more enriched in detail and character's feeltings than the show did. I suggest this book to complete any TV guru's collection.

          5 out of 5 stars A really good book!.......1999-10-10

I liked this book because It had a lot of action in it and sometimes I was scared for Alex. But I wish she didn't have to give up her powers and have everyone know she was the GC-161 kid. If your an Alex Mack fan I think you should read this book and find out more about Alex and her powers.

                  5 out of 5 stars Strength training in 15 minutes a day.......2007-01-09

I have been very impressed with this book. The strength training only takes 15 minutes a day and you can do it at home with only an exercise mat, exercise ball and 2 free weights. There is no excuse not to do it when you can do it at home in 15 minutes. She incorporates stretching with the weight-lifting - so you feel better afterwards. I would recommend this book to men and women. My husband has also found the workouts helpful.

5 out of 5 stars A sane and great program.......2006-11-30

Here's what I like about this program:
                  1) It is designed for women, meaning that it has exercises that hit our trouble spots: e.g. inside thighs.
                  2) It can be done at home. This is essential for some of us. (note to some reviewers: barbell exercises require a spotter for safety.)
                  3) It's designed for those of us who are not already in great shape.
                  4) WIth all the variations, you could easily do workouts from this book for a long time.
                  5) It fits into my schedule.
                  6) It's all laid out, so all that is necessary is to pick a program and follow along.
                  7) The author incorporates stretching, which has been found to increase gains from strength training.
                  8) The eating advice is sensible.

I've just started it, so I will do my best to check back in, in six weeks, and let you know how it worked for me :).

4 out of 5 stars Short on load-volume, chin-ups, dips, and barbell exercises.......2006-06-12

"No one dies from weak biceps" is my favorite sentence in the entire book. Also, the foreword is very eloquent and concise. The book photos and printing style are superb as well.

As a 20-year personal trainer, the author's experience has evolved along the normal path many athletes follow. First, she discovered the great potential of strength training and how it empowers women to lead healthy lifestyle. She has gone through the various phases of repulsion, attraction, and finally obsession with a sport long viewed as men's territory. Now, she appreciates the value of being long, lean, and strong. That helped her have great and effortless everyday living. Second, she realized that she must rev her heart in order to endure long and monotonous activities. That took her to aerobics. She realizes right away that although aerobics is vital to the health of the lung and heart, aerobics does not build up muscle mass. Third, she discovered yoga and ventured into flexibility training.

The three phases of evolution of personal trainers and athletes took 20 years of her life in order to experience their rational significance. Yet, the author claims that you could change your life with only 12 minutes of strength training, four days per week, in addition to 20 minutes of aerobics, three days per week. That is an unrealistic proposal. Furthermore, she suggests that if you do the aerobics and the strength training in the same day then you should split them into two sessions. That is also impractical, since all the exercises in the book are very low on load-volume. The last promise of achieving apparent body change in 21 days is equally bogus.

The common belief that unmotivated people would be stimulated to engage in exercise if promised short and easy routine is simplistic. Change in health and fitness requires commitment to consistent exercising and discreet eating, drinking, and sleeping mannerism. It is not worth it that professional trainers or educators attempt to delude people with false hopes. Reasoning with others in realistic fashion strengthens the mutual trust and supports them in coping with the tortuous challenges of learning to exercise wisely. It is much wiser to exercise three days a week than seven days as the book suggests. Training 4 days with weights and 3 days of aerobics would leave very little time for relaxation, even if the exercise load is sub-minimal.

The major shortcomings in the book are:

1- It starts with crunches on an exercise ball, followed by back extension. No sane person should start exercising from the core. People should be advised to perform total warm up, toe to head, before exercising the abdominal or lower back. Otherwise, serious neck or spinal injury could ensue due to contracting major and strong muscles on cold start.

2- There is only one deep squat pose on page 154, the rest of squat and deadlift exercises are partial and extremely low on resistance. The lack of heavy and deep squat and deadlift results in the characteristic flat butts and loss of lumbar curvature. That is attributed to unduly weak glutei, hamstrings, and spinal erectors. The flat lumbar curve and wasted buttocks and quadriceps are early signs of osteoporosis. Bone density at the lumbar spines is the primary index for gauging osteoporosis.

3- There is no single barbell exercise in the book. No dips. No chin ups. No running or jumping exercises. Those are the golden standards of strength training.

4- The photo of the author on the book cover is more feminine and pleasant than the inside photos due to change in hairstyle and posing in side profiles. That shows gloomy facial expressions. In addition, many of the ball exercises are repeated redundantly for no good reason.

5- The book's theme revolves about the regional anatomy of legs, core, and arms. Those regions are exercised on four levels of difficulty: basic, intermediate, challenge, and express. That renders exercise a quite challenging activity. The book is missing a single focus that links all the pieces of the puzzle along one goal.

                  5 out of 5 stars suggestion.......2006-03-20

I think this book is wonderfully well written and well thought out. I do have one suggestion which is to take the book to your local Kinkos and have the binding cut off and three hole punched. This allows for moving the six week programs around to suit your needs at the time. I did this for $1.50 which added greatly to the user friendly aspect of the book.

5 out of 5 stars Leaner and Stronger.......2006-03-03

I bought this book thinking it would be just like all the rest of the strength training books out there. I am glad that I was wrong! This is one of the best books for women especially those who do not have time or want to go to the gym for strength training! I recommend this highly!!!

                  5 out of 5 stars A Comprehensive Cookbook.......2007-09-23

Don't skip over the wonderful "Introduction" and "Essential Elements of Turkish Cuisine" before you start to use this book. Classic Turkish Cooking presents a wide variety of Turkish dishes, with generally good directions and clear photos of finished products. Don't let the "aubergine," "minced lamb" and "sponge" hold you back - we can all figure out what those are - right? But I must admit I'm not exactly sure what "beef scraps" are - or "strong unbleached flour." No matter. Just plunge in and try these excellent recipes. Most of the more unusual ingredients can be found in a Middle Eastern market or Indian market. An excellent book for those who like Turkish cooking - and who doesn't?

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic, mouthwatering addition to your cookbook collection.......2005-09-24

I had only tried a couple of Turkish recipes before buying this book, but this book made me absolutely fall in love with Turkish cuisine. The beautiful photos and descriptive narrative backgrounds accompanying the recipes make the food come alive even before you've bought the ingredients. As with any ethnic cuisine, one has to be prepared to make substitutions for hard to find ingredients, but with a little creativity there isn't a single recipe that is off-limis. The Imam bayildi recipe is just to die for and it's become a household favourite. I've got a slew of cookbooks gathering dust on my kitchen shelves, but this is one I keep coming back time and time again, especially when I want to serve something really flavourful and visually impressive. But it's great for one-dish everyday meals, too. I couldn't recommend this book more highly!

3 out of 5 stars interesting recipes, great photos, but...........2005-02-20

This book has an interesting choice of dishes and many mouth watering photographs. Most traditional widely known recipes and some local recipes I have never heard of before have been provided. However this book would not be my first choice of Turkish cookbook, there are more accurate ones. Some ingredients used in recipes are almost impossible to find and certain techniques are not explained well. So if you haven't seen someone cooking that dish before it is quite difficult to figure out how. If you have a few books on this topic already this book can be an interesting addition otherwise go for Ozcan Ozan's book.

5 out of 5 stars The only book you'll need.......2005-01-30

I was having so much trouble finding Turkish cookbooks in Australia I finally decided to cough up the postage from the States, and I'm really glad I did! I now have three books but this one is far and away my favourite. The photos are mouth wateringly beautiful, the information is clear and easy to follow and there are recipes for totally basic yet vital parts of Turkish cuisine, like how to make from scratch your own yoghurt and some of the different breads that I used to eat when I was living in Turkey. Also, as we use the metric system in Australia I really appreciated the weights and measures being written both ways. The introductory chapters succinctly outline basic elements of Turkish cuisine and elements of the culture that help you to understand the importance of food to the Turks (as in all Mediterranean cultures)helping you to recreate the experience at home. My son and I can now enjoy the home cooked food we miss from his Turkish relatives in Turkey. Afiyet olsun!!

I am Turkish and (so I am told) a very good cook for 30+ years. I found some recipes in this book (Klasik kofte, salepli dondurma) that I could not find anywhere else and worked wonderfully.

I have the original edition printed in 1969 by Doubleday books. This is probably the best Trukish cooking book still out there. The one thing is it is missing in todays cookbook buyer expectation is the pictures, but that usually is not that important unless you plan on leaving the book on the kitchen table to be browsed as most people do.

                  4 out of 5 stars mixed feelings........2007-03-21

I bought this book because I already have the other one written by both Ghillie and Jonathan Basan, and I (mistakenly) thought that the recipes would be different. In fairness, some of them are, and some of them are a very slight variation on the ones found in their previous work. However, this book has stunning photography, if that's what you like, whereas their previous book, while being beautifully illustrated, does not focus so much on this aspect. This book does have some interesting and exciting recipes however (rose-petal sorbet for example) that I don't have anywhere else in my collection and do make me very glad I bought this book. If one had to choose between the two I personally would choose the other volume, because it is more for the serious practical cook. This book, well, I kind've move it away from the stove so it doesn't get anything spilled on it. There are a lot (lot) more recipes in their other work, but, saying that, the few I've made from this one are delicious and interesting, and the beautiful photography really makes you want to try them. In neither of the books written by these authors is there anything particularly unobtainable, except for things like mastic, salep and sumac. I live in Mexico and I know where to draw the line. But I think I'd have issues with those in UK too. I'd definitely reccomend this book, as an introduction to Turkish cooking for example, and maybe, if you're a more serious Turkish food afficionado, buy their earlier book afterwards.

This cookbook is easy to understand and does not require a lot of cooking skill. The recipies are easy and delicious, and a lot of them use the same basic ingredients so you can mix and match with appetizers and dinners. I am very happy with my purchase.

5 out of 5 stars Good cook book.......2003-11-29

We just got back from a wonderful trip to Istanbul and Greece and I must say upon returning I was looking for some more of those wonderful meze and the Turkish Delights (yum). So I took a chance on this cookbook since there aren't many (any others) out there that are vegetarian never mind vegan! I'm really enjoying this cookbook - the first 76 pages (out of 249 so that's not a big deal) are indeed history/travelogue but its kind of fun to flip through and the pictures were of some of the same places we visited so that was neat. Just before the recipes there's a section on subsitites and here the author gives you the info you need to find certain ingedients that might not be in the local supermarket - e.g. there's discussion of egg substitites and where to find them, non-dairy butter substitites and where to find them, meat/fish substitites and where to find them etc. In the recipes there are some ingredients like non-meat chicken broth that is called for. Why not just go with a vegetable broth? I did. Anyway, the recipes have all been great so far. I've tried mostly mezes so far - the fried carrots, the fried eggplant with two sauces, stuffed grapeleaves (mine never turn out looking like they should - need more practice...). There are wonderful soups in here - the only one I've made so far was the hot and spicy soup, but others like the lentil look good too. I definitely recommend this cookbook. I had a *really* hard time finding vegetarian dishes in restarants in Istanbul which is why I enjoyed a lot of mezes, so I can see why there are recipes in here (like Sultan's delight) that use meat substitutes. I think this is quite authentic and the author did a terrific job at trying to bring the Turkish flavors to the vegetarian table!

                  1 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2001-06-08

I find this book disappointing. Firstly, one fourth of the book is taken up by the author's travel accounts. It's a different story when an author gives some background to each recipe. But it is not the case here and I find the result of those two books rolled into one very awkward. Second, and more annoyingly, many recipes rely on meat substitutes. I have always found it sad and the sign of a certain lack of imagination when vegetarian cooking tries to mimick meat-based dishes. It is particularly regrettable in a book on Turkish cooking which has a rich tradition of NATURALLY vegetarian dishes. Which is why I ordered the book in the first place !
