The Yiddish Policemen's Union: A Novel
ASIN: 0827606699 |
Book Description
Ariel Segal, a Jewish anthropologist and novelist from Venezuela, spent two years living in Iquitos, Peru in the heart of the Amazon rainforest, studying a community of Jewish "mestizos", descendants of Jewish men who a century ago went into the Amazon seeking fortune and adventure, married native Amazonian women, and created a unique hybrid culture, combining elements of both groups, as well as features from the ever-present Catholic missionary culture.
The members of this community consider themselves Jews; many have immigrated to Israel. Segal documents their unique beliefs, practices, and culture, and shows the tensions between this peculiar jungle outpost and the mainstream Jewish community of Lima on the coast. The author presents himself as a "participant-observer", revealing his own responses to his subjects through a journal kept while he was in Iquitos.

soooo interesting.......2001-12-20
Ariel Segal did an amazing job writing this book. It is so interesting and incrediable. I couldn't put this book down, i just loved it. Ariel, congratulations on writing an amazing ethnography...
Jews scattered to the 4 corners of the earth.......2001-07-27
Ever since the Jews were originally exiled from the land of Israel they can be found in many far-flung corners of the world. But who would have thought that in the middle of the Amazon jungle Jews could be found? Ariel Segal does an amazing job of both presenting how Jews got to the Amazon and how they are currently expressing their religion and culture. It is a wonderful tale of the blending of cultures and the desire for religious and cultural continuity.
Taciturn study of an interesting subject.......2000-09-24
Well researched but not engaging. The author never immersed my interest or compassion with the "Jewish mestizos" living in one of the most remote cities in South America. Ariel Segal made me feel detached and unemotional about a subject that one could feel compassion. That of Jewish men, woman and children living in isolation from their culture and history. Perhaps, this subject could be reworked as a novel. The story of a white family in the Belgian Congo was addressed rather grippingly in The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver.
fascinating book, makes you wonder who you really are?.......2000-01-03
It is a well written book, in which the author tell us how a group of people that live in a small town named Iquitos and located in the middle of the peruvian amazon, have a certain way of living, and share some common beliefs and customs that originally come from the integration of two types of ancestors with different cultures or religions or even races: the "mestizos" and the inmigrant jews. The result is an interesting population with particular characteristics. The author has to be congratulated on the smoothness with which he mixes hystorical features, actual facts and the "subjective" aspects of the life and thinking and feeling of these people. He also achieves to put all these observations into a hystorical and phylosophical perspective. Finally the book has a beautiful hardcover and excellent design and is complemented with good pictures. I strongly recommend it.

Book Description
The essays contained in this volume constitute, not a continuous narrative of the history of how the Eden story in Genesis has been understood, but rather a series of snapshots taken at different moments in that history. They include examples of Christian, Jewish, and Islamic interpretations of Genesis in different periods, places and contexts. They address popular movements, learned exegesis, literary appropriations and modern theology and philosophy. They move from antiquity to the twentieth century, and span a spectrum from orthodox to heterodox interpretations of the Eden narrative.

A lovely, lyrical portrait of a rich, fulfilled life........1998-06-26
This book has been on my nightstand for over a year. Every evening, I read just a morsel of Colette's beautiful prose and savor it slowly, like a decadent piece of chocolate. Since this is an "un-biography" (because it was taken from her life's works and letters to personal friends), it doesn't have that pompous, omnipotent, movie-of-the-week quality of many celebrity biographies. And yet it paints a joyous, colorful, honest, lustful and mysterious life (was she or wasn't she bisexual?) lived very simply. I'm constantly amazed at how Colette can talk about something as elemental as her cats or her garden in such a tender, sensual way.
This is a rewarding treat for those who already adore Colette's work. And for those who are unfamiliar with her, it's a simple and elegant introduction! If you've only read Gigi, or The Vagabond, you'll find the woman who wrote them even more intriguing than her stories.

Revolutionary Book and Fun to Read!.......2007-05-02
This is one of the most interesting books I've ever read on history or on shamanism. Historian Geoffrey Ashe is an entertaining writer who has pulled together a huge amount of research and come to some fascinating conclusions.
Ashe traces the nearly universal legends of a Golden Era or paradise at the beginning of human existence to, of all places, Siberia. As the story unfolds he also shows that the Greek god Apollo and (his sister?) Artemis probably originated in Siberia.
Early in the book, Ashe explains the extensive work of Russian anthropologists and linguistics experts showing that women were the first shamans.
This book should never have been allowed to go out of print. It is still one of the best books out there. I read it years ago and still constantly recommend it to people. I hope it is reprinted soon!
Grab a copy of Dawn Behind the Dawn while you can. It will entertain you and make you think. While well researched and factual, it is written in such an engaging style that you will fly through it.
The revelations in this book will stay with you for awhile. This book could change the way that you look at history.

Book Description
Great photographs change the way we see the world; The Ongoing Moment changes the way we look at both.
Focusing on the ways in which canonical figures like Alfred Stieglitz, Paul Strand, Walker Evans, André Kertész, Edward Weston, Dorothea Lange, Diane Arbus, and William Eggleston have photographed the same things—barber shops, benches, hands, roads, signs–award-winning writer Geoff Dyer seeks to identify their signature styles. In doing so, he constructs a narrative in which these photographers–many of whom never met–constantly encounter one another. The result is a kaleidoscopic work of extraordinary originality and insight.

Could be a textbook for introductory creative photography.......2007-09-29
Dyer, a non-photographer has taken on the task of trying to catalog trends in photography. Its weaknesses are that it is limited as the author writes (he did have to get permission to use images) and is mainly American men and twentieth century. While it includes Diane Arbus, Dorothea Lange and Nan Goldin extensively and two brief mentions of Imogen Cunningham. The absence of Margaret Bourke-White, Lisette Model, Sally Mann, Cindy Sherman, Lorna Simpson, Carrie Mae Weems, and Tina Barney when they would have fit into what was studied created the typical boys club attitude.
That being said it is still a good introductory to thinking about what is going in your photographs. Without taking a photograph he illuminates the subject of subject matter.
By having no chapters but rather by slipping in and out of subject matter he does a very good job of introducing photographic history and theory to the beginner. He allows people to think about how they have been influenced by the images and social meanings of subject matter that goes into a photographer's decision to trip the shutter.
One of the greatest lessons for a photographer to learn is that you are not photographing a completely new idea. You as a photographer have been influenced by the society that you have grown up in and while you may not consciously recognize that an image is familiar to you that image has been seen before. Dyer indicates that quotation can sometimes create better images by the quoter than the quoted and allows the photographer to make a statement about the quoted.
Dyer as an Englishman can take an outsider's view of American photography and recognize cultural differences and preferences that an American inherently overlooks as natural. I think that this helps him understand Robert Frank even more than Americans think they do, however it also ignored William Klein's work that was always overshadowed by Frank's coming out a year or two later and grabbing the attention.
Overall he did a thorough examination within the limitations of the length of the book and images to use (images should be larger) and tied it altogether by the end. It is hard to write a cohesive book on such a wide subject so the author who hopes that his book can be read non-linearally did an excellent job of weaving an image into his tapestry.
A glimpse upon the photographic moment.......2006-11-13
This book is admittedly the first and only by Geoff Dyer that I have read but I have a feeling that will change for me. As an interested reader about photography, the book is a wonderful weaving of history and culture in the production of the "representative" photograph.
One need not have a deep knowledge of the history of photography to be amazed at the linkages and connections that Dyer proposes between photographers and their photographic products. Examples are presented in the book to facilitate Dyer's exposure (perhaps fabrication) of a long extended conversation amongst recognized photographers through the subjects they photographed. Whether by fact or fiction or insider knowledge, it turns out not to matter, for the wonderful thing about looking at such photographs is that the content can mean so many different things depending upon the life and experiences of the viewer - true of any art done well.
superb look at photography.......2006-06-15
This book is not a history of photography--nor is it meant to be--though it does look at photography over a large span of time and so is by default a history of sorts. But the book is really one writer's meditation on photography. As such, much is left out, but the omissions in no way mar the book; being comprehensive is not the point. One reviewer above calls the book cynical, like cocktail chatter (not sure what the two have in common or how Dyer could in any way be construed as cynical), which seems preposterous. Simply put, Dyer writes as a person fascinated with and under the spell of photography (an approach he took to his book on jazz), and in doing so offers keen insights--the likes of which are not to be found in other books on the subject. His viewpoint as an outsider is actually a benefit. Beautifully written, this book is a classic, something a reader will return to again and again.
Simply Superb.......2006-05-02
I want to preface this review by saying that I'm not related to the author. Nor am I his publisher, friend or mistress. We live in a society that seeks to criticize greatness in an attempt to become self-important. It's easy to criticize excellence. It's much more difficult to actually become excellent.
Herewith my review:
There is no history of America. No history of Western Civilization. No `history of photography'.
There are only history(s).
Life is a subjective experience. Quantum mechanics provides a `many-worlds' view of the universe. Fate is only rearward-looking in a universe of probability and chance.
Mr. Dyer presents a history of 20th century photography within these pages. But even better, there is an embedded THEORY of photography.
Sure, it may only be 'A' theory and 'A' history. But it's the best one I've ever read of ANY history or criticism. Mr. Dyer surpasses Durant (history) and Sontag (criticism). He weaves a vast web of connections and connectedness that touch our human-ness as deeply as Whitman or Hopper. This is a splendid book filled with poetry every three pages or so. This is a book that should be required reading in every photography curriculum in the country... it helps teach the art of `seeing'.
And also, required reading in every lit curriculum, because upon `seeing' the writer can then paint his own photograph, with words, on paper.
I have read thousands of books but if I could only take ten to some deserted island... this would be one of them.
It's that good.
You will finish this book and then head to a bookstore and spend hours looking at photography monographs. You may even dust off your old camera and get out of the house and start taking pictures. Or you may just sit back in your chair and gaze out the window and see the world.
Ten Thousand Words.......2006-04-20
"The Ongoing Moment" is an examination of the content of some famous modern photographs. This is by no means a history of photography. Instead, Dyer suggests that something may be learned about photography by examining photographs with similar content taken by different photographers. In doing so, the author organizes the photographs by subject matter into a taxonomy that is, by the author's own admission, idiosyncratic, and perhaps bizarre. For example, his categories include pictures of blind people, pictures with hats and pictures of barbershops.
He focuses (pardon the pun, but Dyer seems to love that kind of clever speech) on the documentary photographers of the first two-thirds of the twentieth century, like Walker Evans, Dorothea Lange, Alfred Stieglitz and Robert Frank, and mostly on photographers in America although there is reference to Atget and Brassai and other photographers not working in America. His method is to discuss individual pictures with the same subject, occasionally placing the picture in context by referring to some other art with a similar theme like a poem by Robert Frost or "The Moviegoer" by Walker Percy. But the discussion seems to be purely descriptive. It's said that a picture is worth 10,000 words and speaks for itself. If that's true, what are we to learn from Dyer?
Dyer says that he suspects that the book will be a source of irritation to many people, especially those who know more than him about photography. He gleefully acknowledges that he doesn't even own a camera but that he wrote the book in an attempt to comprehend photography. After reading the book, I don't know if Dyer comprehended photography, but I was certainly irritated.
Dyer's discussions sound like cocktail party conversation by a witty, cynical person. He includes lots of stories about the photographers, often scabrous, and is not above being sexually and scatologically vulgar, perhaps to impress us that he is a man of the world. But his examination of the photographs deals with the denotation of the subject, and seldom the connotation. This may be because of his insistence on examining content only. Yet it is the form of art that allows the artist to convey to us what is going on in the work beyond the simple subject.
I also have to complain about the photographs included and not included in the book. The included pictures were often too small. But in many cases Dyer makes reference to a picture that is not included, usually for the purpose of comparison. He is then forced to give a lengthy description of the non-illustration. I understand that the author may not have been able to get the rights to print a particular picture. However, if, as Dyer seems to suggest, there are a set of favorite subjects of photographers which in many ways are similar, it would have been better to select another photograph that we could see.
Dyer himself says that there are many great books available about the ideas of photography and seems to recommend them to the reader. This left me with the question "What is this book for?"

Book Description
A five-course meal of laughs!
The surest way to a cat's heart is through his stomach. Garfield knows this tasty fact from experience! After all, the only thing bigger than Garfield's heart (and his latest hearty slab of lasagna) is his darling "little" tummy. But when he's not eating between meals, America's favorite feline is dishing out ample helpings of humor. So whether he's triple-lutzing his way to supper or tap dancing with Odie by the light of the moon, Garfield was born to make us laugh well past dessert!
Customer Reviews:
Garfield's 27th collection.......2007-08-04
On June 19, 1978, there was born a "lasagna with fangs". At least, that's how Jon has described his cat Garfield.
Having been on newspapers' comic pages everywhere for almost thirty years, I'm sure I don't have to tell you what Garfield is. You may not have read his strip often (or seen his cartoons, movies, stuffed animals, calenders, inside-the-car-window-sticky-suction-cup-thingies and more), but I'm sure you know who he is if you're looking at the page, so I'm not going to review the comic strip, just the particular collection in this book.
In Garfield dishes it out (his 27th book), Garfield spends Christmas at the farm, has a few snowball fights, "clomps" a few spiders, and is otherwise his usual self. He remains fat, lazy, hungry and cynical. His passive slights at Jon's self-esteem are at their peak in this book. I've read this collection a few times now, and each time is laugh-out-loud funny. Garfield is extremely witty and it's all about the punchlines in this book. In many of the strips in this collection, the third panel is the funniest.
Bottom line: I would recommend any of Garfield's books (even the ones you already own!), but this book is probably one of the best. If you like Garfield, buy this book. If you don't like Garfield, buy this book for someone who does. If you don't know who Garfield is, then... um... well, you've probably been in a coma for the last twenty years, so maybe buying this book shouldn't be your top priority - but keep it in mind for when you get your life back in order.
Quite a good book.......2003-11-27
When I first heard of this book, I was expecting it to be not so great but this is quite a good book, can you imagine having a cat that does nothing but eat, sleep, scratches your chair and puts you down, this book contains a lot of good moments. I always thought that the 90's Garfield books weren't going to be that great but this one is quite good. ENJOY NOW!!!!
GARFIELD RULES!.......2000-06-24
Everybody out there keep buying Garfield books! They can be worth a lot of money someday and can become collector's items! I'm always going to keep all of mine so when I have kids they can read them!
In a bad mood? Want to laugh a little?.......1999-05-02
Then this is not the book for you. But if you want a backache from rolling around on the floor, laughing so much, Then this IS the right book.
Excellent.......1998-10-18
This book, like every other Garfield book in the numbered series, is great because of all the jokes, but this one is very special because of a story inside. SWALLOWS HIS PRIDE was great because of the Run-Away-From-Home story, while ROLLS ON was special for the Garfield-Gets-United-With-His-Mom story, but this one goes over the top for the Christmas-on-the-Farm storyline, which is clever, hip, and funny.
Book Description
IT'S A BIG WORLD OUT THERE--SOMEBODY'S GOT TO EAT IT!
There's never been a lasagna GARFIELD couldn't tackle, a burger he couldn't capture. GARFIELD always rises to the challenge--and so do the pounds! So whether he's cleaning his plate (and John's plate, and the neighbors' plates), prodding Odie to fetch an oncoming train, or celebrating his one-millionth meal of the day, GARFIELD's the cat that just doesn't stop--eating, that is!

Great being a Garfield fan.......2005-08-10
Have been for a long time now and i'm glad that i decided to start back. Buying the books and its really convenient with them being released in a 3 pack. Its like a bunch of classics all wrapped together, love it.
Excellent!.......2005-07-28
My son recently became interested in Garfield, and he just loves the books. Its fun and very easy reading, so he enjoys it, while still practicing his reading skills. Its the best of both worlds! The service was great, the shipping was very quick, and the quality of the book was excellent. Thank you for putting many smiles on our faces!
Another stunning achievement for author Jim Davis!.......1999-04-03
This book left me breathless! I was stunned! A perfect blend of comedy, drama, and even science fiction! Everything was written just as it was should have been written. Genius. Simply genius. Pure genius.
Another fine literary drama by Jim Davis.......1999-04-01
The saga of Garfield, Odie, and Jon continues. This dramatic and moving yet highly disturbing portrait of late-nineties domestic suburban sexual denial forces the reader to delve into his/her own tortured sexual psyche, much like Catherine and Heathcliff but as a trio each exploring their own unrequieted desire. The tension is unbearable, and Garfield's repeated replacement of food for sexual yearning is telling of late twentieth-century sexuality. Odie's alienation as a result of Garfield's spurning for the love of his inanimate replacement for Jon, in the form of Pookie, is obviously a compelling metaphor for post-colonial AIDS isolation. Alone in the confusing mire of mixed signals that is their home, poor Garfield has no choice but to seek solace in the soft, safe, squishy bosom of Pookie, denying the pain and self-loathing so apparent in his everyday encounters. Odie, much like Hillary to Bill, pointlessly attempts again and again to win the affections of a reckless, wanton, yet powerful force who has become consumed by his meager life, ironically encouched in power. Jon's unrealized quest for gratification is symbolic of the fall of Communism and is a clever representation of the fall of the wall and the troubles of subsequent unification. Supplanted in a landscape of repression and denial, our three protagonists seek comfort in their base desires: coffee becomes the drug of choice, providing escape from the hell that is life, much like today's "raver" youth seeking comfort in "ecstasy" and "techno". Woe to he/she who proceeds beyond the cover of this prophetic tome! Another masterpiece accomplishment by Davis, sure to keep him in literary courses of the future.
About the books........1998-10-21
I like Garfield. He is the greatest cat and funniest I have ever read. He is great and funny. He is MAD PHAT. He always makes me say WORD when I get a new book.

Book Description
In the aftermath of the Great War, a wave of tourists and pilgrims visited the battlefields, cemeteries and memorials of the war. The cultural history of this ‘battlefield tourism’ is chronicled in this absorbing and original book, which shows how the phenomenon served to construct memory in Britain, as well as in Australia and Canada. The author demonstrates that high and low culture, tradition and modernism, the sacred and the profane were often inter-related, rather than polar opposites. The various responses to the actual and imagined landscapes of battlefields are discussed, as well as bereavement and how this was shaped by gender, religion and the military experience. Individual memory and experience combined with nationalism and ‘imperial’ identity as powerful forces informing the pilgrim experience. But this book not only analyzes travel to battlefields, which unsurprisingly paralleled the growth of the modern tourist industry; it also looks closely at the transformation of national war memorials into pilgrimage sites, and shows how responses both to battlefields and memorials, which continue to serve as potent symbols, evolved in the years after the Great War.

Book Description
This volume explores how rugby is played and revered in different countries and cultures. It unfolds in the space of two years, from September 1996 to August 1998, as McRae travels across the hemispheres, moving from Britain and France to the New World, comparing the game at club, provincial, and national levels. It begins in the South Africa of McRae's youth where rugby was a byword for Apartheid. It covers the tours of the All Blacks and The British Lions in the "new" South Africa, crosses France, Britain, and Ireland in the company of the Springboks and Wallabies, and ends up in New Zealand and Australia with the English and Welsh teams.
