Photoshop for Nature Photographers: A Workshop in a Book.......2007-01-03
Excellent resource. This book should be on everyone's shelf who uses Photoshop for nature photography. Authors (there really are two of them regardless of how it's listed here) know their stuff and explain it very well. CD accompanying the book is very helpful too.
A must have.......2006-08-18
This book is a must have for any digital nature photographer. Great step by step how to's and very well laid out.
So-So - Not the Best Book........2006-01-16
I am not sure what part Tim Grey plays in creating this book but if you are purchasing the book do it because of what Ellen Anon is contributing to the book. I Think Tim Grey is a fantastic Photoshop and P.C. Guru - and a great writer in his element. If Tim contributed to the Photoshop techniques of this book that is good. He is not a fantastic nature photographer. Leave the nature photos to the likes of John Shaw and George Lepp (Tim knows both of these nature photographers), etc. Tim Grey has some great books out - Color Confidence and Photoshop CS2 are two of them. Buy those two books before this one if you want some of Tim's best writings on Photoshop. Photo Finish is another book that Tim Grey co-authored and it also a So-so book. There are tons of good Photoshop books. If you need a starter try the Adobe Photoshop Classroom in A Book series for whichever version of Photoshop you are using. Use the Adobe Photoshop Tutorials on their web site - they are great and free. Print these tutorial out in color and put them in a binder and you have a great Photoshop book with little or no cost to you. John Shaw has an excellent e-book, "John Shaw's Photoshop Field Guide", about 208 pages. A great source for nature photographers with some Photoshop experience. No 'down-&-dirty' tricks in his e-book. It is straight forward Photoshop information for a nature photographer of all levels of experience. It does not cover Photshop CS2 but you can figure everything out. Cost is $30 US. http://www.johnshawphoto.com/ebook.htm. Two other books to consider if you don't already have them are Adobe Photoshop, by David Blatner & Bruce Fraser and Digital Photography, by Eismann (a great photographer & writer), Duggan, and Tim Grey. (since Grey is at the end of the line here I can only assume his part is small in this book). Purchase some of these other books before spending money on Photoshop For Nature Photographers.
Excellent coverage and easy to read.......2005-11-02
I should be clear up front - I'm lucky enough to know Ellen and Tim personally but that has no impact on my thoughts about this book.
Ellen and Tim have done a great job of explaining Photoshop from the nature/landscape photographer's point of view. The additional comments from other pro photographer's gives the reader insight into how a working pro uses the software and the included CD with sample files is great for working through the examples on your own.
If you're looking for a book on how to get results from Photoshop you'll have to look long and hard to find one that matches Photoshop for Nature Photographers.
Great Book.......2005-10-15
I find "Photoshop ® for Nature Photographers : A Workshop in a Book" to be a great book to add to your PhotoShop library. It adds some great insight by several of the world's best known nature photographers. Any book that has instructional information from John Shaw, Arthur Morris, Charles Glatzer, and Joe McDonald is well worth the investment.
One of the most difficult aspects of PhotoShop for me has been the effective use of curves. Tim and Ellen do a much better job at helping with this complex matter than any other book I have read.
The effective utilization of PhotoShop requires as much of an artistic approach as it does as workflow approach. Tim and Ellen do a very good job of fully developing a great workflow while introducing their own artistic approach.
No one book can every include all the aspects of PhotoShop that you will every need. However, "Photoshop for Nature Photographers : A Workshop in a Book" does a great job of specilizing for nature photographers. As with any workshop, it does require the student to do some work to get the most out of the class.
I recommend this book to any nature photographer who would like to improve their utilization and knowledge of PhotoShop.

Nature Photographers Photoshop CS3 - A Very Good Book.......2007-09-23
PRO: I generally agree with the previous favorable reviews of the book and therefore, rate the book with four stars - not perfect but covering most of the important subjects for nature photography. I'm glad I purchased the book. The TRY IT work lessens in each chapter are helpful because you learn by practice, but it may take a little time to locate where your told to go if your not already familiar with photoshop. This is my first and only book on photoshop and I don't believe I will need another book on this subject for a long time.
CON:The books author makes some assumptions about the readers photoshop knowledge that may not always be correct. This is unavoidable. As mentioned earlier in one of the responses, the book binding is not very strong, so if you scan pages try not to lay the opposite page flat on the scanner, the pages will come loose from the string binding.
I am an italian amateur.......2007-08-30
I have added this very nice book to my already rich collection of Photoshop books because I was mainly attracted
by the concept of Nature that was missing in my arsenal, and because I wished learning more about the new
features of Photoshop CS3 ( that I've recently bought), such as Adobe Camera Raw, Smart Objects, Quick Selection Tool,
and the new Panorama tool.
Under its very appealing graphic appearance I found all the responses I've expected, every topic being
exposed in a natural and direct way.
I also found very useful the tutorials and the examples on the accompanying CD, as well
as the contents of the Authors' Web Sites.
I recommend this book to everybody willing go deeper into the art if photographic imaging, to the experts as well as the novices
on Photoshop CS3.

Essential Book for Serious Nature Photographers.......2007-07-27
Whether you are new to nature shooting or experienced, Ellen Anon and Tim Grey's book is sure to provide techniques, insights, and tips that you can put to use immediately and with excellent results. The authors take time to thoroughly explain complex concepts and techniques in easy-to-understand language and with excellent background that deepens your understanding of both the art and the science.
One of the primary advantages of this book is that it takes you step-by-step from exposing images in the field, through exposure and color adjustments in the digital darkroom, and finally to getting the best output on the printer. And as a bonus, this book includes great techniques for creative effects and for saving time during the workflow.
This is a must-have book for serious nature photographers--and for anyone who wants a complete guide to shooting, processing, and printing great digital images.

Tremendous Book! Essential information!.......2007-07-19
For any serious amateur to pro level photographer, this is a "no-brainer" book to own.
Ellen and Tim do a great job breaking down the software barriers to make our digital work easier
to conceive and to perform.
There is a wealth of information here.
After years of trying (unsuccessfully) to get through software manuals and books, this is the first book that we actually keep on our coffee table and take with us on the road. Even a perfunctory paging through will yield invaluable information in a concise, lucid prose.
Highly recommended!
A must have book........2007-07-14
This book is for the advanced hobbyist photographer. It shows great technics and work flows. If you are serious about your photography, you will learn a great deal from this great book.
Book Description
Created by Reg Smythe, Andy Capp first appeared in The Daily Mirror on August 5, 1957, and made his first American outing in 1963. Still published on a daily basis, Andy Capp now delivers laughs to millions of fans worldwide. With plenty of naps on the sofa, pints at the bar, and frayed tempers for Andy's long-suffering wife Flo, The New Andy Capp Collection has a laugh for every day of the year.
Customer Reviews:
Although not the best collection ever produced, this book is a fine sampling to any fan of the rude little guy.......2007-08-05
On the occasion of the 50th Anniversary of Andy Capp (the first drawing was published on August 5, 1957), I'd like to officially express my admiration for this comic strip, possibly for the very first time.
At first eye-sight, Andy Capp does not give the impression of being anything extraordinary. I was introduced to this thoroughly unsympatethic bum when I was ten and liked him immediately, which puzzled many in my surroundings. Indeed, the strip is hardly a children-comic and seen in retrospect, I believe my first interest was mostly established due to the amusing drawings and funny characters; honestly, there were times when I thought the strip was pretty nasty. I kept liking it, though.
What is it, then, that have made this character so popular? Andy Capp is not one of those comics which everybody originally avoided but which eventually received cultural status. No, Andy Capp was an immediate hit; only a couple of years after his first appearance in The Mirror, he was already a commercial icon. And his popularity did not diminish, even though the times changed and he eventually had to give up smoking.
Andy Capp's popularity remained because behind its simple construction, Andy Capp is, in fact, an intelligent comic strip filled with at times VERY clever (and hilarious) dialogue. Being a Norwegian-born, I only read translations of the strip for years, but I eventually began to read it in its original language as well, and then, BO-OM! I can recall many occassions when I had to stop reading in order to write some of the jokes down. Being a cartoonist myself, the strip taught me a lot about the timing of comics and use of language. I'd like to come up with examples, but really, they are best seen on paper.
Perhaps even more significant, though, is the complex relationship between Andy and his wife, Florrie. In most comic strip marriages, the family atmosphere is almost without exception either wonderful or horrible. In Bringing Up Father, for example, Jiggs and Maggie might communicate with an "acceptable" tone once in a while, but this is always disturbed by Jiggs' self-absorbness and Maggie's intolerance. In the same way, the idyllic life in Blondie is perhaps interrupted by a few arguments, but the family is a healthy and lovely one. In Andy Capp, on the other hand, sarcasm and fighting take the largest part of the couple's time, but Florrie frequently smiles apologitically while she, most often indirectly, explains to the readers why she tolerates Andy's misbehavior. To a large extent, she seems to accept the rude comments from her husband and much suggests that she actually loves him, which is further made clear by the "pet"-naming.
This book, THE NEW ANDY CAPP COLLECTION NO. 1, mostly consists of new material published after the death of Reg Smythe. During the last few decades, Andy Capp has softened considerably and the new cartoonists have not fully succeeded in following the brilliant characterizations which were part of Smythe's strength. However, the drawings are almost impossible to differ from the originals, and I chuckled a lot while reading the recent strips as well. Andy Capp-fans should certainly add this book to their collection, especially since it also offers some strips by Smythe's hand as well. But newcomers to this wonderful comic strip should be warned; there are better publications to mark their interest with, namely the sadly hard-to-find ANDY CAPP THROUGH THE AGES.
Andy Capp, a Little Cleaned Up But Still Insufferable .......2005-02-07
The original Andy Capp, created by Reg Smythe, was a dialect-speaking wife beater, a loathsome but very funny human being. The modern Andy speaks in standard English and doesn't pound on Flo (though she pounds on him--reverse sexism?). But he's still as insufferable as ever, and this new, updated strip is a delight.
Just don't reform any more, dear old reprobate!
Book Description
It's about time! Finally, a book that brings both clarity and sensitivity to the areas of intimacy and sexual fulfillment for newlyweds. No longer will newlyweds feel guarded and confused in their feelings toward sexuality. With the insights provided by this book they can now be filled with confidence and peace about this exciting and fulfilling part of their marriage.
First Night and Beyond is a book that gently shares with newlyweds an understanding of those special parts of their bodies that are most responsive to sexual touching, and what acts of intimacy may assist the couple in experiencing complete fulfillment together.
The couple will learn that God created each of us as sexual beings. Within the bonds of matrimony, sex is intended to be both exciting and rewarding, drawing the couple together in a depth of intimacy that can be achieved in no other way. A newly married couple may experience feelings of guilt or hesitancy in their sexual passions together. This book will help put their minds at ease, and will demonstrate how these tender, God-given passions may be used to achieve a profoundly wonderful relationship. Their lives may now be drawn together in an endearing love that comes only from learning some of the special little secrets of sexual intimacy that take most couples years of marriage to achieve--but that are now presented with great sensitivity in this book.
First Night and Beyond is a "must read" for newlyweds, and would be especially helpful if read by a bride and groom just prior to their marriage and then re-read as a couple during their honeymoon.
This book is also the perfect answer for the newlywed couple that still experiences some of the inevitable challenges that come with adjusting to eachother's intimate needs and wants. Even couples that have been married for several years may find approaches described in this book that will enhance their intimacy beyond anything they believed possible.
The book is short and concise, and can be read within a few hours. However, despite its brevity, it may be the most important and rewarding few hours of reading that a couple could ever experience together.
An ideal shower or wedding gift!

Pre-marital must have!.......2002-11-09
This book provides fabulous insight into the world of marital intimacy. As I was preparing for my marriage, I found the book to be a wonderful tool for helping to ease the transition into married life and all of the enjoyment that intimacy has to offer. We found within its pages a beautiful guide for husband and wife--it addresses issues such as love, communication, self-image and provides some of those tough answers to questions that are sometimes too difficult to ask. The book was recommended to me by my doctor, and as newlyweds, we couldn't be more grateful for the sensitive advice and information offered by this husband/wife team. "First Night..." also served a wonderful purpose in opening up for comfortable conversation the topic of sexual intimacy with my parents and other trusted loved ones. I would recommend it to parents with soon-to-be-married children! It works wonders! Not only did the book provide us with preparation and insight before marriage, it continues to be a valuable tool even now...even after...the "First Night."

Book Description
The same painstaking research and statistical surveys that made Richard Smith's The Dieter's Guide to Weight Loss During Sex a #1 National Bestseller is applied to the questions of honeymooners the world over. Uncompromisingly honest positions are taken on such questions as: Can we do it all we want? Why are my parents here? Where's the mint on the bed?
This essential guide allows couples to monitor their progress throughout the evening and into dawn. Charts tell how long everything will take, and at what point the bellhop should be asked to leave. Special sections address the concerns of the newly remarried and the irritation caused by the newlyweds next door, who at 9:30 are already ahead by three. A catalog of over-the-counter aphrodisiacs (oysters, green M&Ms) will resuscitate flagging will power.
What's wrong with unlimited sex? Absolutely nothing, says Richard Smith. Anything's all right as long as no one gets hurt.

Funnier for married couples.......2004-06-14
I was just in the right frame of mind tonight... It's funny reading this book from the other side of marriage. It's been years since I was newlywed. I read this book years ago when I was single and it didn't seem as funny then.
Read for fun, not for guidance.......1999-11-16
This is well worth the price just for the humor. It is a slapstick approach to the subject matter, mixing in reality (very little) with light heartedness (quite a bit). If you're looking for a book to help you know what to do on your first night, don't buy this one.
