Beautiful photos abound.......2001-11-05
Round Buildings, Square Buildings, Buildings That Wiggle Like A Fish won't fit into the curriculums of many schools but its appearance in 1988 earned it high recommendation as a basic introduction for all ages, to the world of architecture. This reprint of Round Buildings, Square Buildings, Buildings That Wiggle Like A Fish invites new generations to take a different look at the buildings we use. Beautiful photos abound.

Okay, but not great. Mainly interesting as a look at Doyle.......2004-11-01
We all know Sir Arthur Conan Doyle from his Sherlock Holmes stories, and a few of us know him from Professor Challenger. This books shows an entirely different side of Doyle. They are interesting as a look at him, and a look at his time. Most of the characters are ordinary Englishmen (no women protagonists, and certainly nobody who isn't a Caucasian from Europe or North America! We do get a look inside the head of some of them, and see what motivates them.
As horror and suspense stories, these are okay, but not brilliant. There's not a single stinker in the book--I read every story to the end without regrets. On the other hand, none of the stories are brilliant, or even tremendously horrifying nowadays. The one that disturbed me most was probably "The Pot of Caviare", which has not even the slightest touch of the supernatural (and which was very predictable, even though disturbing). A couple of the stories touch on Doyle's supernatural interests.
If you want to see more of Doyle's non-Baker Street side, check out the stories of Brigadier Gerard. Or if you want to see the works of which Doyle was proudest, check his historical novels of The White Company.

VIOLET TREFUSIS: LOOKING FOR ITHAKA.......2007-08-10
This book is extraordinary to read in 2007 because of what it omits - but it was not written to be definitive or serious. At the outset, Violet tells us she doesn't want to bore readers with the "long littleness of (her) life". "I have not lied, I have merely omitted, by-passed the truth, whenever unpalatable". Early in the book Violet shares quotes from her diary from the early 1920s; she was seriously depressed (the truth is she was crushed by the 'fall out' from her broken affair with Vita Sackville-West). She speaks of having loved (too much) and suffered but it was impossible for her to reveal more (read Diana Souhami's Mrs Keppel and her Daughter' and Nigel Nicolson's 'Portrait of a Marriage' for the background). The inclusion of such intimate `real' detail is revealing in itself. Anyhow, we quickly skip ahead to a better time. The book includes all the main actors in Violet's life but in little detail save her mother.
The book was completed in the vacuum of her parents' deaths. Most of the other important actors were still alive (the manuscript was proof read by Vita Sackville-West). She was not going to write the book I wanted to read. The book is honed and inscrutable - with very little to be read between the lines but she makes it clear that Vita was important throughout her life. She uses sparkling wit and epigrams rather than emotion yet she was a passionate woman. Nevertheless, the book is an entertaining, mostly lighthearted read - Violet often pulls back from anything too serious. So this is Violet's selective memoire, pitched just right for its early 1950's audience of would be 'toffs' and, especially, Violet's friends and family. It is not Violet's true story.
I have had to view this book through the lenses of later biographies and make an effort to get over Violet's apparent superficiality, real snobbery and Edwardian prejudices. But there is a secret door in the book's first page: a poem by Constantine Cavafy; his 'Ithaka' which reads like advice to the young to experience life and be brave enough to grab hold of deep emotion, sensation, wisdom on the way to the end of life, Ithaka. Don't hesitate or look around. A read through Cavafy's other poems surprised me. Melancholy pervades many of them and his love poems are often poignantly nostalgic for the exquisite sensations of love long gone. He did look round. So did Violet. She explains her title before we get to Cavafy. "One is never cured of one's childhood. Too happy, as in my own, it exhaled an aroma with which the present can't compete; too unhappy, it poisons life at its source. In either case, it is wiser not to look round." She is telling us her adult life was disappointing. She is tired of her life at the end of the book, she wants to sleep, but she endured for another 20 years.
In this book important dimensions of Violet are hidden, buried because they were "unpalatable" and would have demanded an impossible book (a book Violet had suggested she and Vita write - Vita declined while knowing her secret memoire might be published one day). There is nothing here that reflects the tone of 'Ithaka'. We have her entertaining public persona on paper and her quick mind. Her busy outer life lived fast and luxuriously. She is much older, wiser, perhaps made tougher by the lessons of her life. A reading of Cavafy with Violet in mind is revealing. I recommend 'Don't Look Round' as essential background for those interested in Violet and for general background to high society in London, Paris, and Florence from the early 1900s to the '40s. Souhami's biography draws from 'Don't Look Round' and remains the best and truest record of Violet Trefusis. Souhami, Cavafy and Nicolson are available via Amazon.
Note: The Kirkus review at the top of the page is unfair. 'Echo' was not about her affair with Vita Sackville-West. Violet was born in 1894 into the upper class; of course she identified with it. Violet met Mussolini before he was in league with the Nazis - she couldn't resist including this because it happened, maybe with a bit of rose colouring. Violet was devastated by the fall of France, she was awarded the Legion de Honneur for her wartime Libre France broadcasts. She spent most of the war outside London. The inclusion of Alice Keppel's quote from the lounge of the Ritz, London amidst a bombardment doesn't do Violet or her mother any favours. Violet's mother (who she adored unconditionally)was also cruel to Violet but you wouldn't know it from this biography. Lastly, she's writing for a particular audience. I too was frustrated by the lack of depth.

A Great Read.......2002-01-22
I found myself reading this book through in two sittings. If you like history, personal stories, diaries or the like, you will enjoy this book. I compare it to Jimmy Carter's An Hour Before Daylight in that it gives a picture of rural life in the early part of the century. It is human, candid, and lean in its verbage. It captures all of the emotions and leaves you with mental images that will last a lifetime. Try it.
A window into a world gone by.......1999-12-07
In an era of urban sprawl and corporate farming, this is a gentle reminder of a world of small towns and kind people. Jackie's experiences growing up on the dairy farm range from laugh-out-loud humorous to tears rolling. "The Round Barn" illustrates what family values truly were before the demogogues got hold of the term: integrity, caring and principles put before profit. The Dougans were--and are--intelligent, hard-working people who have a tremendous joy in living.
The stories are brief enough to read aloud---and deep enough to read again and again with pleasure.

Tales of therapy are also tales of therapists, and Irvin D. Yalom--author of much bestselling psychiatric fiction and nonfiction--is a seasoned storyteller. This new collection of "tales from the couch," part memoir and part fiction, is the work of a therapist unafraid to become deeply engaged with his patients; people, not pathology, are the stuff of Yalom's psychotherapy. Ego, doubt, and fantasy are rarely confined to the couch, and the doctor learns as much from his patients as they from him.
Here Yalom introduces us to Paula, whose losing fight against cancer teaches us that fear is only one of the many colors that brighten our dying; to Irene, a skilled surgeon whose dreams provide tantalizing clues for the psychological gumshoe intent on discovering the irrational terror behind her impressive intellect; to Magnolia, the earth mother whose inexplicable paralysis and imaginary infestations seemed her body's way of punishing her for aspirations aimed too high; and to Momma herself, half protector, half mythological monster, guardian at the gates of the psychotherapist's own unconscious. And, opening up the case files of the fictional Ernest Lash, Yalom reminds us that psychiatrists, too, are human. Like Oliver Sacks, Yalom spins the labyrinth threads of consciousness into the rich tapestry of something much grander. Therapy is not for the weak of heart, doctor or patient; in these pages, the journey toward healing and self-awareness reveals itself to be not about passivity, but courage. --Patrizia DiLucchio
Book Description
Psychotherapist Irvin D. Yalom probes further into the mysteries of the therapeutic encounter in this entertaining and thoughtful follow-up to his bestselling Love's Executioner
In six enthralling stories drawn from his own clinical experience, Irvin D. Yalom once again proves himself an intrepid explorer of the human psyche as he guides his patients--and himself--toward transformation. With eloquent detail and sharp-eyed observation Yalom introduces us to a memorable cast of characters. Drifting through his dreams and trampling through his thoughts are Paula, Yalom's "courtesan of death"; Myrna, whose eavesdropping gives new meaning to patient confidentiality; Magnolia, into whose ample lap Yalom longs to pour his own sorrows, even as he strives to ease hers; and Momma--ill-tempered, overpowering, and suffocating her son with both love and disapproval. A richly rewarding, almost illicit glimpse into the therapist's heart and mind, Momma and the Meaning of Life illuminates the unique potential of every human relationship.
Customer Reviews:
fantastic read.......2007-06-09
so simple to put into words....this book is fantastic! read and enjoy
Great Read.......2007-05-07
Great read for those interested in the counseling/psychology field. I would not recommend to be used as 'educational' but covers a lot of information on grief. The last two chapters are fictional but the rest are based on real clients.
A gem from a master psychotherapist.......2007-01-10
Dr Yalom shares in "Momma and the Meaning of Life: Tales of Psychotherapy" a unique window into the workings of a master psychotherapist. Dr Yalom elegantly describes what and how he learns from patients struggling through complex therapeutic journeys, modestly giving them credit for helping him become a more sensitive therapist.
A real gem that I have shared with colleagues and friends which I recommend for anyone wanting to be a psychotherapist
Yalom speaks to and for all of us.......2005-05-07
This book is simply wonderful. The first chapter about Momma is worth the price of the book all by itself. Whether one is a therapist, is in therapy, is curious about therapy, or just wants to understand life, read this book, in fact, read all of Yalom's books, (well, maybe not "The Practice of Group Therapy") That one is a textbook for practicing group therapists.
Greatly flawed but decent read........2001-08-22
The problem with this book is that it leads you to think this a work of complete nonfiction, each chapter being a seperate tale of psychotherapy with patients, and the first 4 chapters were great - but the last two, the last one especially, really annoyed me because I kept thinking 'how could this possibly happen? this is ridiculous. Has this author completely lost his mind?? and when I finished reading the last chapter, I thought to myself, okay, this last chapter completely destroys all credibility this book ever had. Then I went to the copyright page, curious to see if it was listed as fiction or nonfiction, and what do i find? 'nonfiction except for chapters 5 and 6, which are works of fiction' well gee thanks for telling us ahead of time, would have made the reading a lot more enjoyable if i had known that!!
As I said, despite disagreeing with some fundamental aspects of Dr. Yalom's therapy, I did enjoy and gain insight from the first three chapters. But the last two really destroyed it for me. I'd give it a 4, but if you read it knowing the last two chapters are fiction, it would probably be upgraded to a 7.

Russian Cooking.......2007-01-16
I found this book recommended to me by my Russian professor, and after eating at a Russian dinner hosted by my university's Russian club, I decided I really had to have this book. It has an excellent introduction which covers a large variety of topics on Russian cooking through the years. Another thing I like about it is that it uses mainly ingredients that are commonly available today. Although a few of the ingredients used are highly unusual today (like dried backbone of a fish), they appear in relatively few of the recipies. I am anticipating cooking recipies from it!
A very interesting look into the cooking of Russia.......2003-01-09
This is such a classic that it was intended, in the past, to be given to young housewives to be a much-used reference. As such, in addition to the predictable recipes for coulibiac (fish in pastry crust), sturgeon, borscht, kasha and Russian sweets, there is a wide variety of household food preservation and preparation you just don't find in today's cookbooks. Such as--butchering a pig and then portioning out, preserving and preparing the resulting meats. NOT for vegans or the fainthearted, believe me. Also, there are recipes for improving the flavor of homemade vodka (including how to make birch charcoal for the purpose.) And how to make imitation butter from mutton fat, how to get rid of the off-flavor in butter that is going rancid.
If you are a home-brewer, this is a surprisingly good book for making such things as mead and fruit wines and liquers. One caveat for the whole book; measurements are either baffling, in Russian terminology that has no English referent, or "two wineglasses" , etc. And for brewers, it requires some basic knowledge of the process.
For cooking, there are a lot of beef and fish recipes but the borscht recipes were disappointing as there were only of few of these and there are LOTS of ways to make borscht. However, for interesting reading on food history and technique, and for some authentic Russian cooking, this book is absolutely fascinating reading.
NOT YOUR CONVENTIONAL COOKBOOK!.......2001-12-18
My grandmother immigrated to Canada from Russia well over a century ago and lived to the age of 104. With her she brought many authentic Russian recipes, but alas, they remained in her head and not on paper. This cookbook comes very close to the recipes I, as a child, can remember her preparing. Yes, it is true, that some aspects of the recipes found here are lost in the translation, particularly when it comes to measurements; however, in reality, that is how my grandmother, and many Russian homemakers in her time, prepared a meal. There was no such thing as a teaspoon of this or a cup of that. Accurate meansurements would have meant nothing to my grandmother, for like many immigrants in the 1800's she had little scholastic education. Her education came from the "school of hard knocks" and life's experiences. Measurements included "a little of this a small handful of that." I can remember her placing three fingers in a small cup and when the liquid reached the top, that was how much one used. Confusing? Yes, for the traditional chef, it would be. However, as one becomes experienced with Russian cooking, the delicious recipes found here will not seem like such a challenge to prepare - trial and error is often the best way of learning.
Interesting but Confusing.......2001-02-16
I'm really just beginning with this book, but it is already frustrating. Some reasons: Measurements are given oddly, like 1/2 pound flour, 2 glasses water. There will be an instruction to "bake" without mention of temperature or time. There will often be ingredients in the list which are not mentioned in the instructions. It seems to me that it was written as a technical reference for someone that already knew what they were doing in this cuisine. I strongly recommend that in future editions there be some editing and clarification done along with translation.
Not a simple cook-book, but a part of the Russian history.......1998-07-07
So far I did not have a chance to see an American version of Madame Molokhovet's, only the Russian one. But since probably nobody knows about this book in US, and I turned out to be the first one to review it, I have to "break the ground" and drop a couple of lines.
The original version, first published at the end of the XIXth century, had a goal to help young middle-class housewives covering a wide range of issues from hiring servants to shopping for the house. The recipes were only a part of what can be called an "encyclopedia on running the house".
During the Soviet times there was almost no opportunity to use it because it was almost impossible to buy the ingredients. However, the book was still fun to read. It gives a good picture of the Russian culture of the time.
The recipe part (of the original version) is very thorough and understandable. However, most of the dishes require considerable time, exquisite ingredients and, in many cases, help of another person. However, trying them pays off, for they help you to discover REAL Russian cuisine, very different from "chicken-Kiev" and other tourist traps.
I would recommend this book to those who love Russia, are interested in Russian culture and like to cook something very unconventional. Very curious to see the American version.
