from the very first opening of the cover you know its gonna be a high-classmagazine cover book. It features new artists, and old, with very rich photos and informative captions on many. Very rich color, so rich you forget you're looking at a book on magazine covers. Features Trent Reznor, Marilyn Manson, Green Day, Hole, Nirvana, the Wallflowers (hense the back) and more for those who like the artists. Others such as Elvis, Madonna, The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan (hense the cover) and Sharon Stone, exploring all the intimate stories behind some of the MOST famous covers. Documents every, or almost every cover in the history of the infamous Rolling Stone Magazine in their run. An essential for cultural info buffs and makes a nice present.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Covers.......2001-11-28

The covers of Rolling Stone Magazine have been controversial, memorable and are a marker for musicians that they have made it. Some covers have created a stir such as a teenage Britney Spears posing in a provocative outfit, a topless Janet Jackson with a pair of male hands covering her and the last photograph session of John Lennon in which he is naked on a bed next to a fully clothed Yoko Ono. Most of the covers are simple photographs of everyone from Bob Dylan to Richard Nixon and even Dr. Hook who sang a song called "Cover Of The Rolling Stone", but they are some of the best works by the some of the best photographers in business like Annie Leibovitz and Herb Ritts.

4 out of 5 stars Rock'n'Roll in graphical historical detail.......2001-10-21

This book is a virtual history of American rock'n'roll. Each cover says something about the times, such as the now rather melancholy shot of Nirvana, form early 1994, on the verge of a huge comeback, just months before Kurt Cobain shot himself, or Annie Leibovitz's moody 1971 study of John Lennon, then deeply into his Working Class Hero phase. Rock'n'roll stars compete for cover space with politicians and film stars, depending upon what the issue or the hot stuff of the day was - Warren Beatty and Jerry Falwell both feature in political and pop-cultural contexts (the shot of Beatty is from 1975, when he was promoting Shampoo, a film set just days before the Kennedy assassination) and the text is sprinkled with plenty of choice quotes form both camps, making this a book to be slowly savoured for its pictorial and historical content time and time again.

4 out of 5 stars A piece of history.......2001-10-19

Seeing many of the covers again (I was a subscriber in the seventies) is like going back in time - and seeing many of the covers for the first time makes me wonder why I stopped being a subscriber.
I bought this book after having seen an exhibition of Annie Leibovitz, and to me she is still one of the greatest.

4 out of 5 stars A little more than a coffee table book, in fact.......2001-09-07

The book is a graphical historical document, showing all the covers from Rolling Stone magazine until the time of its edition. It could be argued that this is nothing more than a marketing gimmick to leverage off the work of photographers of the stature of Annie Leibovitz. But in fact, just like the Rolling Stone magazine has been since its beginning, this is about the history of music since 1967 until 1997. The deaths and triumphs of everyone are in it: Morrison, Hendrix, Lennon, Cobain, alongside Madonna, U2 and all your favorite stars.

Do not buy this book. Unless you need to be able to laugh about your inability to "talk dirty" with your partner. This book was a complete and total waste of time and money.

4 out of 5 stars Tell it like it is!.......2002-10-23

I admire this author's willingness to explore the taboo subject of dirty talk, no matter how embarrassing and finicky it may seem to some people. I found myself nodding in agreement at society's timid approach to verbal stimulation during intimacy. The Fine Art of Erotic Talk is a great beginner's guidebook on how to express yourself verbally in bed. I was duly impressed with this book.

3 out of 5 stars Great for beginners........1999-07-10

This book gives a very good starting point for couples who are new at erotic talk. Those readers who have already tried this form of communication should probably pass on this selection. It's definitely a beginner's manual.

        5 out of 5 stars If you're a verbal type, this book's for you!.......1999-04-06

I think the author could probably get me off just by talking to me. What a wonderful thing that is!

Before I got to this book, I was initiated into the realm of auditory pleasure through phone sex with women I'd met in chat rooms. That went shockingly well for me. It taught me a lot about honesty.

        I treasure this book.

        Book Description

Photo Sex offers both an expanded vision of the nature of photography--that fine art photography legitimately includes the subject of unapologetic sex--and an expanded vision of the nature of sex--that sex involves more than sexual intercourse and its attendant foreplay, more than the pursuit of orgasm.

The premise is that each photo in the book is a sexual photograph in this sense. This, of course, begs the question, "What is sex?" a question that each person will answer differently. Photo Sex collectively offers the author/photographer's personal perspective on what is included in the sexual realm--a perspective which is fairly broad.

A wide audience for photography views sex in a more complex, subtle, and interesting way than commercial pornography can offer. This broad audience includes women as well as men, and people of all ages, ethnicities, and sexual orientations who are interested in exploring sex in depth, rather than reducing its complexity and wonder to cliches.

Photo Sex is inclusive in its choice of both subjects and subject matter, with images of middle-aged and older people as well as youth, of heavy people as well as thin, of people who represent a broad range of genders, ethnicities, sexual tastes, and sexual orientations. The photos confirm that all sorts of "ordinary" people are both sexy and sexual.

        Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Not for the average Coffee Table!! but worth having.......2007-04-05

This is an interesting book and in many ways almost refreshing. The subjects are obviously mostly about as oblivious to the camera as one could be under the circumstances and all should be congratulated on their willingness to be part of this project. It's not airbrushed up, it's not all pretty young things, it's not all straight or conventional. It is mixed gender combinations, it is such diversions as a couple of pissing pictures and other bits and pieces that for most of us might be getting a little beyond our experience. Happily it's all part of what we, as a race, do. It's young people, old people, straight, gay, solo, toys and group. More than anything else this book is just a candid look at human sexual expression and as such a nice overview and with a nice balance, neither gratuitous or sterile.

This is a nice quality softcover book (and any photographic record worth having deserves quality presentation) and a good coffee table size, and without lots of text cropping the images, even more attractive. Having said that though-be warned-If you buy this and leave it on your coffee table I accept no responsibility!!! Your visitors would have to be considerably more open minded than most of mine to pick this up over a cup of tea and not be stopped in their tracks a bit.

        Cheers

        Lloyd

4 out of 5 stars But is it art?.......2003-10-22

This is a nice compilation of erotic photography from a number of photographers, but is it "fine art" as most folks define the term? I don't think so -- maybe "fine erotic art" would be a more accurate description. Many people will find many of the images pornographic rather than erotic, and a few of them disturbing. Which "few" depends on one's particular sexual preference, habits, experience, etc. -- mine will likely be different from yours. Whatever, this is a volume for lovers of graphic eroticism, not for those looking for "fine art" in the traditional sense -- fans of Roy Stuart or Eric Kroll should enjoy this book, although its images aren't as fetishistic as those photographers'. It's worth the price, if only to add to one's collection, but keep it away from children and folks wearing pacemakers.

One gripe: The reproduction of the images wasn't as good as it should be, with somewhat wishy-washy blacks and whites -- the overall impression of many of the pictures is gray, without the contrast and rich blacks of a true photograph. At the price of the book, I guess this is expected, since great printing costs money, but I was disappointed nevertheless.

Also, many of the images depict what middle-of-the-roaders would consider aberrant sexual activity, so if anything other than straight hetero encounters puts you off, shop for another book. On the other hand, it's obvious from the expressions of the participants that it's all in good fun.

I wouldn't buy this book again, but I didn't return it, either, for what that's worth.

David Steinberg's book Photo Sex: Fine Art Sexual Photography Comes of Age
        By Sensuous Sadie
        SensuousSadie@aol.com
        www.sensuoussadie.com

In the introduction A.D. Coleman says, "the book in your hands is not just another volume of loosely defined `erotic' photography in which formal nude studies and elaborately staged but fictional sexual scenarios predominate. These are photographs of everyday people-not hired models or professional sex workers-engaged in real sex." "Thank heavens," I thought. I've pretty much had it with staged erotica - the kind where a model stands against a black backdrop in a latex maid outfit and a whip in her hand, the kind rife at what he calls the "tens of thousands of unfathomably popular, hopelessly boilerplate, sex websites," but hardly what I see in real life.

Give me instead what David collected in Photo Sex, "Older people, hefty people, skinny people, people with disabilities-these and more mingle here, linked principally by their acknowledgment of their sexuality as central to their lives and by their participation in these acts of photo sex." Yes, people who look like me, and like my kinky friends. Yes, people like me, who celebrate sex as the core of our being. And Yes, real sex and love and affection, the kind I feel when my lover Griffin looks into me, his hands on me and in me.

The photos are beautiful. Sexual. Alive with hunger. But then, it turns out that this book is about a little more than just that. Coleman goes on to discuss this type of photography as inherently political, saying that, "By its very existence, the range of sexual images being produced opposes the core right-wing dictate that sexual activity should properly be restricted to heterosexual interaction between husbands and wives, without accouterments and with procreation foremost in mind-and that sexual activity should never involve shameless public display."

We in the BDSM community are often reminded not to "scare the villagers," meaning don't let them see too much of our practices because they cannot understand what they are seeing and will use it against us. Maybe that's true, but in another way it so damages us both in the public arena as well as in the private one. There is another part of me, a hunger for my vanilla friends to see me, the whole me, not just the fluff I assemble for public consumption. My vanilla friends have responded in a variety of ways, from mild titillation to a blank look. Even my kinky friend Susan exhorts me to keep this side of myself under the blanket so as not to make anyone uncomfortable by "unconsensually" including them in my lifestyle, or because I might appear to have gone "around the bend with that bondage stuff." She is right in one way though, I also don't want to become one of those BDSM-obsessed people who bore us silly, yammering on and on about their sex life.

I cannot keep it all under the blanket though. The only way to remove the stigma of an alternative sexuality is to educate our vanilla brethren. Speaking openly about what we do and who we are is part of that. It's not that I want to share what I did in bed last night, but rather I want to be free to talk about the remarkable world of sexuality and how that affects my personal and public life. I am hungry for compatriots, hungry to connect on a deeper level about what is meaningful. Sadly, in our culture talking about sexuality is often not acceptable, not to mention alternative sexuality like BDSM. Even when I do find vanilla friends open to discussion, they must start at the beginning as in, "What does that B-D-S-M stand for again?" With that in mind, a deeper discussion of sexual politics is never going to be on the table.

One day my life will have its own generational shift, a shift that like David's book, offers "glimpses of the playful, the tender, the intimate, the affectionate, the delicate, the humorful, even the goofy-sex in all its delicious, constantly shifting intricacy." One day I will be known for all of it, and then I too will be a coffee table book of delicious desserts, easy to taste along with all the other flavors of my inner landscape.

5 out of 5 stars Sexual Photography as Fine Art.......2003-09-26

David Steinberg has put together a collection of erotic photographs that, while exposing us to the many facets of the sexual world, moves sexual photography itself into the realm of fine art. Sometimes startling, sometimes breathtaking, sometimes bizarre, yet always absorbing, these photos will engage you through form, texture and substance. I believe that this book may well become the standard by which future fine art books of sexual photography will be measured.

        5 out of 5 stars Disturbingly Beautiful.......2003-09-23

This book is full of disturbingly beautiful images. Some are erotic, as in--sexually stimulating to the viewer--whereas others are more broadly intriguing. Some images I find upsetting, or funny, or aesthetically evocative. My favorite photographs in the book are those that are full of mystery. If you are interested in the artistic side of sexual photography, or in looking at all sorts of people turning each other on in special ways, this book will tickle your eye bones and finger your mind.

        Book Description

Entertaining and thoughtful, this book graphically portrays an area of Greek and Roman life that was an embarrassment to the eighteenth- and nineteenth century scholars discovering these objects in their classical collections. At a time of sexual prudery such material was viewed as unsuitable for serious study and removed from public display.
With 125 black and white and 38 color illustrations, Sex or Symbol? shows that while overt sexual representations were common in painting, sculpture, pottery, jewelry and other minor arts, not all the objects that shocked the Victorians had an erotic purpose. Catherine Johns demonstrates that many had a religious and apotropaic function as well as reflecting the classical delight in erotic art for its own sake. They also shed light on the social mores of the time, in particular the wide range of sexual behavior acceptable in classical antiquity.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Not Too Indepth but Great Illustrations.......2003-07-16

Catherine Johns begins her book by saying that there is a difference between the modern understanding of sex and the ancient one. Her thinking here is call into question our ideas of "obscene." After 150 pages Ms Johns has not developed her thinking beyond pointing out that sexual images were used in ancient times as symbols of fertility or symbols to ward off evil. It was not her intention to do so. She could have merely pointed out the difference in attitudes toward sex between a person who lived in a city and a person who lived on a farm.

Instead it was Ms Johns' intention to provide a pictorial survey of the variety of sexual symbols found in the Greco-Roman world and in this regard she makes her book outstanding. For example, on pages 72 and 73 she shows phallic symbols used as a pendant and as amulets. One amulet shows the combination of three symbols of luck: the phallus, the crescent, and the hand. Page 110 may show a political satire which pokes fun at Cleopatra. And page 82 shows a beautiful silver dish which depicts Pan dancing. There are 160 some odd illustrations in this book and it is the illustrations which make it worth reading.

5 out of 5 stars Informative, Scholastic, Thought-Provoking, and Lively........2000-03-31

My title is composed of the first four adjectives that came to my mind when I thought of this book. Not only is this a splendid resource about an until recently sadly neglected part of ancient studies, erotic artworks, but it is also a historical reference on Victorian scholarship, and a warning about the perils of putting modern culture and preconceptions ahead of the truth found in scientific and historical studies.

I could continue singing the praises of this book for several more screens of text. Instead, I will simply recommend that anyone reading this review go on to read this book.

The quality of the paper and the quality of the art reproductions is of the highest nature.

Lucie-Smith has the gift to inform conversationally as he writes about the history of eroticism in art. His writing includes excerpts from poems, novels, articles, and quotations that are liberally reproduced throughout this extremely visual book. The overview of erotic art is divided into chapters: Sex in the Head, Naked as Adam, Naked as Eve, Loves of the Gods, Down to Earth, Looking On (voyeurism), Boys will be Boys, Women in Love, En plein Air, Solitary Pleasures (onanism), Coming Together (group sex), All Change (gender alterations as well as costumes), and Love Hurts (sadomasochism). He has selected a wide range of artists - painters, sculptors, printmakers, photographers - who truly span the timeline with titillations form Egyptian and Greek imagery to present day practitioners of Eroticism.

Lucie-Smith may concentrate on potentially over-the-top images, but he never loses sight of his mission to inform. His writing is lucid, often humorous and equally often deeply thoughtful when challenging the mores of our time. A fun and very informative book.

        2 out of 5 stars Be Forewarned.......2003-10-23

I am a great fan of Edward Lucie-Smith's books so I was delighted to find, what I thought was, a new book listed. Unfortunately when I received my copy of Erotica: The Fine Art of Sex, it turned out to be a slightly updated version of his 1997 book Ars Erotica. The new version with a very different cover, has an additional 32 pages with twenty new images. The rest of the book is exactly the same as the first with the same illustrations and text.

If you do not own Art Erotica by all means buy this new version. Had I not had the first version I would certainly have given it five stars. If, however, you own the original the new images do not really add that much to the book and I would certainly not have purchased it had I known I was going to be so dissapointed.

            Book Description

Long ago, in a time when the worlds of men were ruled by Wizards, the greatest Magi of all, Zagyg, built a mighty fortress. Overlooking the small town of Yggsburgh, on the heights of the Four Tors, Castle Zagyg became a place of power where the Mage worked his arcane sorceries. He wove spells of great wonder and explored the ethereal dimensions where even gods and men fear to tread. His power knew no match in those days of wonder. But, as all things end, so did the reign of Zagyg. Where he went, whether slain or lost, none could say. The good folk of Yggsburgh could only say that no power reigned in Zagyg. In time, the fortress and its dungeons became a haunted place of nightmare and terror. Strange lights beckoned from her high towers and the howls of cursed creatures could be heard on the windswept slopes of the Four Tors. Ever did men look upon that place with horror and dread.

              Book Description

This collection was inspired by the Golden Fleece Awards of the Month, which were given to the most ridiculous programs and grants. Check out this wacky fact: The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism invested $102,000 in discovering if sunfish who drink tequila are more aggressive than sunfish who drink gin. Hundreds more of these goofy grants will have you laughing (or crying) for hours. 96 pages, 40 b/w illus., 5 3/8 x 8 1/4.
