very usable.......2007-07-27
most complete i have ever read on radiant heat simple enough for someone like me new to radiant floor heat.but very complete has info for figuring size of pumps needed and number of loops etc
This book is a waste of your time and money.......2007-01-13
McGraw-Hill should be ashamed of themselves for allowing this book to be published! It meets none of the advertized criteria, and you couldn't begin to attempt a design or purchase after having read this thinly disguised manufacturer's sales pitch. There's better information available on the web for free. What's more the writing style is extremely superficial and repetitive, with identical illustrations used in numerous places simply as fillers. The author (if really an actual person) should go into hiding immediately.
The publisher's "text book" reputation really deserves to be tarnished if this is the best they can come up with.
Do not buy this book!
A Waste.......2005-01-31
This book will not benefit anyone. It is repetitive and lacking the necessary detail to truly plan and install a radiant floor heating system. It's unfortunate that books like this are not screened before being made available to the unsuspecting public.
Dimly radiant.......2004-02-29
This one of the worst books I have ever purchased. It does not provide "real answers contractors need" as is advertized on the cover. The information provided is mainly taken from web pages and other vendor supplied information. Many repetitions of the limited material as if the author had prepared several drafts and included them all in the published version. Don't waste your money.-Ag
Poorly written, lacking content.......2003-02-04
Nice table of contents, but each section was littered with poor writing and repetitive comments about how great radiant heating is. This is obviously just a hidden manufacturer's pitch for radiant heating products.

informative overview of ancient Greek art.......2004-12-16
This is great as a nice introductory survey of artwork, some myth, and some history of ancient Greece. Carpenter divides the book into chapters and sections according to important characters (heroes, Olympian gods) and events (Trojan War and its aftermath). In each, he provides a good overview, brings in historical and contextual information to provide narratives to the relevant artworks he provides at the end of the section (which is rather inconvenient to have to keep flipping the pages if you don't know what he's referring to). Themes, characterization, attributes, trajectories etc etc can all found in this book which is quite compact for the amount of information it provides.
Good basic introduction.......2000-05-15
A good undergraduate source of the visual images that are one survival form of the classical myths. Basic information about ancient art gives the reader just enough knowledge to understand technically why certain traits appear, such as the different "color" of males and females. Packed with pictures, it is an excellent source for both classical studies and art history at the undergraduate level.

Book Description
Science and engineering research must be communicated within the research community and to the general public, and a crucial element of that communication is visual. In Envisioning Science, science photographer Felice Frankel provides a guide to creating dynamic and compelling photographs for journal submissions and scientific presentations to funding agencies, investors, and the general public. The book is organized from the large to small -- from photographing laboratory equipment to capturing new material and biological structures at the microscopic level. Full-color illustrations including many side-by-side comparisons provide an extensive gallery of fine science photography.
The book begins with a brief historical overview in a foreword by science educator Phylis Morrison. Frankel discusses technical issues and, just as important, her personal approach to creating images that are both scientifically informational and accessible. This is a handbook that should become a standard tool in all research laboratories.
Customer Reviews:
Not what I expected.......2007-07-04
This book is not a coffee table book of Frankel's amazing pictures, it is basically a textbook of her techniques. The pictures are not the focus. The focus is on instruction- creation, exposure, color, composition, and the like. I'm not a photographer, and really couldn't care less about that stuff. I just wanted a book of her work. If I had looked at this book in a bookstore first, I would not have bought it.
Very useful book for scientists.......2004-01-08
I had the opportunity to hear Ms. Frankel at the Materials Research Society meeting and bought the book as a consequence of her talk. Certainly, having heard some of the stories about some of the pictures helps make the book more alive, but I am convinced the book would still be a 5 star one without that advantage.
Ms. Frankel does a good job covering the basics of photography (mostly film, but some digital). She spends a lot of time talking about how to use the image and construct the image to tell the story. My observation is that scientists often don't do a good job getting the image and the story out in a terribly effective way. From the perspective of using images to tell a story (particularly a technical story), this book is by far the best resource I've seen on that subject. I strongly recommend the book to scientists working with images and to those interested in journalism about science.
Simply wonderful.......2003-10-27
This is at least two different books. The first is simply in the pictures themselves. Frankel's photography complements, even improves the quality of the science with which she works. The scientist's goal is to make new knowledge available, and Frankel has unique talent in doing this visually.
The second book lies in the text around these beautiful pictures. This is an introductory guide to scientific photography. The text will work for a novice as well as a photographer experienced in other kinds of images.
Above all, this is a book about communication - about visual presentation of knowledge. In a chapter of his own, the book's designer makes it clear that the book itself is an example of visual communication.
Perhaps some people think that art and science are somehow opposed to each other. I think such people just don't understand either. This book shows that art and science are complements, perhaps just different ways of finding and sharing new truths.
100 years from now, we'll be talking about this book.......2002-09-16
I first read about this book in the New York Times, and I agree with Mandelbrot's observation that it's a "masterpiece." Frankel's work will have a tremendous impact, not just on science, but on art, design, architecture, aesthetics, and the way we view the world.
Science will never be the same.......2002-09-02
Frankel is the Muybridge and Edgerton of the new century. Anyone who reads this arresting book will never see science--or life--quite the same. Life is more exquisite and magical than we know, and thanks to her, we are able to see just how. She gives us privileged views of worlds that we could never see without her help. This book, and her previous volume "On the Surface of Things," are must-haves for any thinking person.

Book Description
From the author of the popular Ceres, Celestial Legend, winner of the 43rd Shogakukan Manga Prize comes the first volume of the most popular shojo manga in America. In this adventure, the discovery of a mysterious book transports Miaka and her best friend Yui into a strange new world reminiscent of ancient China. They set out to find and befriend seven Celestial Warriors, including dashing mercenary Tamahome and wannabe empress Nuriko. Only then can Miaka summon the power of the god Suzaku, find her true love, and get home safely.
Customer Reviews:
Chinese Romantic.......2007-01-19
I don't know manga, but I know what I like. It's fairly good, this one. A girl named Miaka is trying to get into the high school of her mother's choice, but would rather be eating. She's a bit of a scatterbrain too. She stumbles on a book on Chinese mythology, a book that when read puts Miaka into the story, though she can leave whenever she wants as long as the book's open. She gets caught in the world, however, when the book is closed, and she discovers that the only way out is to gather together the "seven constellations of Suzaku" together. She develops a crush on one, another of them develops a crush on her, and another becomes jealous of her. Will she be able to find the others?
It's fast paced and silly at times, rushing around with Miaka's personality. Cute pictures too. There's also some little comments from the author, Yu Watase, in the margins sometimes, which is interesting.
This was the first manga I ever read (4 years ago) Still my favorite!.......2006-12-12
About four years ago, my friend introduced me to the whole aspect of manga with this book. I instantly loved it and couldn't get enough of the story.
Years later, after reading hundreds of manga, this series still remains as my favorite for its beautiful artwork (the artist just gets better as the story unfolds!), a humourous and engaging plot about a teenage girl who finds herself as the herione in a book where she finds love and the true meaning of friendship, and for its memorable charachters.
This story has become very important to me over the years, as it is one of the few manga that I still follow with an eager heart and mind. While it may seem like a silly story at first, there is really a lot of depth to everyone and what happens to them.
If you want to read a wonderful story that will make you both laugh and cry, over and over again, choose this one.^_^
Also, Hotohori is my favorite character...
<3
Fushigi Yugi!!!!!! I LOVE THE WHOLE SERIES!!!!!.......2006-01-08
Fushigi Yugi was the second Manga I ever read, and it is most likely my favorite. And that's not just because it's written by my favorite manga writter.
Fushigi Yugi is the story of a girl named Miaka Yuki, who is pulled into a book called the Universe of the Four Gods, and into an alternate world that is based off of ancient China. THere, she becomes the priestess of the beast god called Suzaku.
Inorder to summon the god, Miaka must gather all seven celestial warriors of Suzaku, then she must summon the god, and she will have the power to make her dreams come true.
All of the characters in this story feel so real, and I ended up feeling deeply for them, when ever they had a hard time. And believe me, they have more than their fair share of problems. But, I won't go into those, because they aren't in this book.
The first part of the series is 14 books long, and that part is about gathering the warriors, and summoning the god. While books 14-18 are about how...I'll just go write a review for book 14. ;)
Anyway, this series is really good, especially once you get past the first two or three volumes. Miaka can get very annoying at times, but I think that if you can over look that, and just get into the story, then you can really enjoy it. And, Miaka does get a little easier to handel the further you go into the series. ALthough, my favorite characters are Chichiri, Tamahome, and Nuriko.
What are you waiting for? Buy the book already, will ya?
Fun........2005-11-16
Yu Watase, Fushigi Yugi: Priestess (Viz, 1992)
Viz wastes little time telling us on the back cover that Fushigi Yugi is the most popular manga in America. (Really? I'd have thought Fruits Basket held that honor.) There's got to be a reason for it, yes? Thus, I have started down the path that so many others have trod before me. That way lies obsession, folks.
Miaka is a typical Japanese schoolgirl (assuming there is such a thing). While cramming for high school entrance exams one night, she and her best friend Yui take a quick break and, somehow, find themselves in the rare books room. They check out a book called The Universe of the Four Gods. Upon starting to read it, the two of them are transported to China two thousand years ago for a very brief time, during which they meet Tamahome, a very pretty, but miserly, chap who saves them from being carried off by slavers. They then return to present-day Japan and cramming.
The next time Miaka goes through, she is alone, and there her adventures begin...
It's a good beginning to a series; not too slow-paced, not confusing at all (both flaws that scarred the first volume of Fruits Basket), with likable characters and relatively constant action. (For a modern Japanese interpretation of an acient Chinese folktale, though, it does feel an awful lot like the first ten minutes of The Seven Samurai, but with Japanese schoolgirls.). *** ½
Not my type of series..........2005-10-17
Fushigi Yugi for me was a very difficult story for me to get into. It was so slow paced, that I lost interest about half way through volume 3. The story and plot just didn't keep my interest. I don't know, maybe its the whole 15 year old girl finding the love of her life in less than a week's time, or silly (and rather pathetic fight) between the two best friends. I will say however, that I did enjoy the artwork if anything. If your currious about this series, see if your local library has a copy (I know mine has a bunch of Fushigi Yugi volumes)instead of buying it.

For lovers of the origin of English words, a must read!.......1998-02-27
Who knew that the original word for "freckles" was "murfles?"
And do you know why a pretty girl was called a "bellibone?"
If you love words and their origins, this book is a gem! My copy got tossed out in a move years ago, yet I still can recall many "obsolete" words (the comical illustrations help)! Sometimes the obsolete definition makes more sense than the modern. For instance, doesn't "flutterby" make more sense than "butterfly?"
