Book Description
The first complete history of gay and lesbian visual expression in all media, from the dawn of time to the present day--massive, fascinating, beautiful
As spectacular in its appearance as in its depth and range-- encompassing works of all genres in all ages on gay themes, by gay artists, or for gay patrons--Pictures and Passions supersedes more narrowly focused studies. Following an Introduction that discusses the sexual and artistic practices of prehistoric and early societies, Pictures and Passions examines the classical world's visual celebration of homoerotic love and how its status among the Greeks permeated later civilizations as an emblem of lost Arcadian ideals. The pictorial denigration and satire of the Middle Ages give way to the dawning tolerance of male beauty and affection in the Renaissance, then to eighteenth- and nineteenth-century economic and social transitions that stimulated the emergence of modern homosexual identity and cultural institutions, and finally to the flowering of modern homosexual art.
Throughout, gay and lesbian art and experience are seen in a broad context that includes non-Western cultures (with an entire chapter on Asia and Islam); traditional media such as painting, sculpture, architecture, and graphics; and modern commercial and mass media such as magazines, photography, and advertising. Pictures and Passions is a groundbreaking work of nuanced scholarship in a lucid and engaging idiom that will appeal to general readers, students, artists, and sophisticated gift givers.

Very Entertaining and informative.......2006-10-09
I bought this primarily for the historical aspect and also as it was recommended by the artist Tee Corinne in her book `Intimacies'.
From the book description - This history of homoerotic art spans three millennia and explores traditions in Western, Middle-Eastern, and Asian cultures. In addition to celebrating glorious paintings and photographs, art professor Saslow illustrates the ways in which degrading images of gay men and lesbians have been used to infiltrate societies with negative assumptions of homosexuality. A groundbreaking work of nuanced scholarship encompassing all genres in all ages on gay themes. 145 illustrations, 32 in color.

BEYOND PERICLES, PEDERASTY AND POTTERY.......2000-01-25
In the relatively small area of gay studies devoted to the visual arts, "Pictures and Passions" is a standout. Just about everything that has gay or lesbian thematic relevance is in here, from cave drawings to Renaissance sculpture to Japanese pornographic "pillow books" to the cover of DIVA magazine.
I really consider this to be an intellectual and social history as much as a history-of-art text. Author James Saslow insists that we know enough about the cultural background of each place and time so that we can place the import of the homosexual art in its proper context. For example, anyone who expects ancient Athens to be San Francisco with togas is going to be disappointed--"homosexuality was simultaneously everywhere and nowhere" in the author's famous line; it was culturally pervasive but did not give rise to anything like our 20th century gay life.
In Europe, different centuries have different signatures; at some times male homosexuality and lesbianism could be openly alluded to in art and at other times, only symbolically, as through religious allegory (St. Sebastian was a favorite). At no time--not even when persecution of homosexuals was at its peak--did I feel that Saslow was scraping the bottom of the barrel for gay subject matter. There was always something interesting going on. Non-European subject matter receives treatment too.
The last thirty years, the so-called "post-Stonewall" era, have been a boon for gay and lesbian art in America, and the last fifty pages of this book dwells on that. I for one wish Saslow had been a little more selective about this period--there is some great stuff chronicled here, but also some fairly trashy pop art that it is safe to say won't last.
Since "Pictures and Passions" is a history of thought book as much as a history-of-art book, if any aspect of the field suffers, it is artistic technique. This is not a book to learn about the rise of perspective, or what impressionism is, or why abstract art rose to prominence. For that, the reader would have to consult one of the standard texts on the subject or a beginner's work like "Art for Dummies." I can easily see this book being used in a Gay Studies course in college, or to add diversity to a standard art course. I think it will find a good audience among art lovers, and hopefully not just gay men and lesbians. The book itself is an attractive presentation, copiously illustrated, and includes color panels. Saslow's prose is acadmic but no more than it has to be.

Book Description
In ancient times, older women were the keepers of primal mysteries and were revered for their special wisdom. For this very special book, Joyce Tenneson traveled throughout America to photograph and interview women ages 65 to l00.What she found was a revelationwomen who were vital, energetic, and deeply beautiful, inside and out. The80 portraits are of women from all walks of life from the famous, such as Sandra Day OConnor, Julie Harris, and Angela Lansbury, to the ordinary, such as our mothers and grandmothers. Tennesons compelling and compassionate portraits, accompanied by short poignant statements from these remarkable women about the experience of aging, will help to reawaken us to the power and wisdom of our elders.

Wise Book.......2007-06-09
Beautiful sepia-toned photos focus the reader's attention. Some of the women in the book are well known, some are not - which leads you to think maybe you could be wise or courageous or beautiful also. Interesting quotes. Interesting book. I bought one for a friend. After reading it, I bought several more for myself and other friends.
An inspiration of a book!.......2007-04-02
I found this book at my massage therapist's.
I couldn't put it down.
It is absolutely beautiful, and real and inspiring.
The photography is incredible.
This is a MUST for every special woman in your life!
Wise Women.......2007-03-10
I bought this book for my 61 year old sister. After seeing this in the doctors office I knew this was a must for her. She means the world to me and I felt that this would say it all. It has!!! Beautifully done.
Wise Women - photos and messages.......2007-01-20
This book was a gift but I own it and knew it is marvellous. The recipient was very touched and inspired by the photos and the words of wisdom - she said every woman over 40 should have it in their collection.
Wise Women for Every Age.......2007-01-10
The book is stunning. The photography and text work together to create a multi-dimensional image of these women -- famous, infamous, or someone like your aunt Jenny whose status remains within the family. This is a book to keep by your bed and pick up when you need some inspiration or just want to read for five minutes before you fall asleep. Buy it, keep it, and buy more as gifts. It's a treasure.

A perfect "10" on the Can't-Put-It-Down Scale!.......2007-02-28
When my 7-year old son is fighting with my 9-year old daughter for his turn to read AMELIA RULES!, you know these books are going to be a hit. The artwork is beautiful, the dialogue full of great humor and pathos, the stories engaging. But what appeals most to the kids, I think, is the characters themselves. Amelia is out-and-out fascinating--a perfect combination of pre-teen girl and tomboy--and her friends are as lively and entertaining as any you'll find in American literature.
In fact, this IS literature, and if you're the kind of parent who thinks comics are no better for kids than TV, AMELIA RULES! will prove you completely and utterly wrong. Get these books. Your kids won't be able to put them down--and neither will you.
The Best Kids' Comic Ever!.......2004-04-16
Simply put, there is no kids' comic book on the market
better than "Amelia Rules!" It is intelligently written,
beautifully drawn, and totally hilarious. The stories
contained in this volume are a cartooning tour de force.

Customer Reviews:
Outstanding Real-World Advice.......2006-06-27
Nadine calls it like it is in this excellent guide to making your way in the music business. Fantastic reference for musicians with mainstream ambitions and those representing them.
Good.......2006-05-20
This amazing book will show you the darker sides of music producing and recording, things you will not see in other book, in living colors and with dozens of photography and along the good side, it presents the failures in music industry and details the motives for the fall. Real life cases are presented and the evolution is followed from the first demo tapes up to stardom, the process and steps that the musician must take to become noticed, almost all of these steps taking years to complete .
its greeeeeeeeat!.......2006-05-16
This book is a practical, useful reference for everything related to the music business. It will give you a great idea about what you and your band should be doing next. No matter if you're sailing along and everything is fine, or if you're in a serious rut...this book is a must-read. Also check out "The Music Business: How YOU can make $500,000 "or more" a year in the music industry by Doing it Yourself!" by Ty Cohen.
Finally something I can use!.......2005-10-18
It's not often you come across anything related to the music industry that is practical and insightful at the same time. "Hot Hits, Cheap Demos" is a must read for musicians at any stage in the game. Nadine's an insider who shares stories of how successful bands broke through from the inside perspective and in doing so offers opportunities to compare your own progress to the biggies. But what I found most helpful was the "band timeline" that explicitly maps out your career from garage to arena with amazing accuracy! Highly recommended.

Varied Collection.......2005-12-09
This book is a collection of articles from Roth's frugality newsletter, Living Cheap News. The articles are collated by subject area, covering such topics as philosophy of frugality, real estate, automobiles, entertainment, food, coupons, clothing, travel, holidays, jobs, and retirement. Many of the articles close with a resources section that may include toll-free hotlines, contact information for specialized businesses mentioned in the article, and short book reviews. At the back of the book is a section entitled "Additional Resources," which includes many more of such phone numbers and reviews.
This isn't a bad collection of articles on frugality, but it also isn't terribly exciting. If it's your first book on frugality, it may give you direction, but for those who have read other books on the topic, there isn't a lot that's new here. Also, since this is a collection of articles originally published at different times, there is a bit of repetition. The best feature of the book is the resources, which can point you to more detailed information about specific topics. Unfortunately, there is no index, so if you find something useful, you had better put a bookmark in, because the information may not be easy to find again later.
Are You Saving Money?.......2005-03-15
Larry Roth not only gives you down-to-earth advice on how to save money but how to implement that into living a very productive life. Not everyone knows the real secrets to saving money but Larry has been able to get his point across in a way that inspires you to make a commitment to bettering your own life. I don't belive in living cheap. I much prefer the term frugal, but whatever you call it, it is a way for those who are not rich to live well beyond their means. Take my advice, this is a good starting point in your quest to start saving money.
Pushing others newsletters/books.......2004-09-24
I felt all this book offered were names, addresses, telephone numbers of other writers. This book didn't supply any means of saving money, only what newletter to purchase ($), what book to purchase ($). Nothing was beneficial and I am very glad I purchased this as a used item and not new.

The Thrift Highway.......2004-10-26
This is fun and fantastic resource. These girls love a good bargin, and they obviously have a knack for fact-checking. "Dirt Cheap Real Good" is full of helpful information -- and with a bevy of detailed directions to accompany the funny and personal anecdotes, it's the only road atlas you'll ever need.
These Ladies Know Thrifting! .......2004-08-21
I read this book assuming that, after 9 years living in the DC area, I would find summaries of my favorite haunts, and maybe scoff at outdated listings for a few that had closed. I did not expect, and was very happily surprised, to find mention of several newer shops, including a few nearby I didn't even know existed!
The book was obviously very thoroughly researched, and I'm sure they had a blast writing it. (Now, if only I had thought of it!)
Not just thrift stores!.......2004-08-05
You may purchase this guide looking for some stores to stop into, but what you'll find instead is the makings of a thrift vacation. The authors outline great roadtrips to surround the highlighted thrift stores, so you'll know where to stay and eat as you thrift your way around the mid-atlantic region. They even throw in some other activities besides thrifting in case you go into bargain-hunting overload. It's a pretty genius idea and a totally original take on road-tripping. I highly recommend picking this book up for a new perspective. Plus, they do give you all those great stores to stop into.
Dirt Cheap, Real Good is REAL GOOD.......2004-08-05
I bought DIRT CHEAP, REAL GOOD for a weekend trip to D.C. and I was blown away by the thorough research the authors had done on thrift shops in the area. They not only tell you where to go, but also include information about what to expect in terms of price, selection, and even atmosphere. The writing is lively and fun, and the book is illustrated with photos of many of the stores. This book is a gem for true connoisseurs of thrift stores and American popular culture.
A MUST FOR YOUR CAR and ROAD TRIP!.......2004-07-21
Dirt Cheap Real Good Rocks. I was visiting some friends in Philly and my friend was wearing a cool old IZOD(I had been dying to find some IZODs and Le Tigre vintage shirts). When I asked him where he got the shirt-he pulled out Dirt Cheap... and we spent THREE full days on tours of the Philly area thrift shops! I cleaned up!(now you can find some of those shirts on my ebay site) There were also cool insights to local eateries!! Now I have one in my car and have circled the next several trips.. They need to write one for every part of the U.S.!!

A Literary Masterpiece.......2003-02-22
This is a literary treasure unmatched by any other contemporary American author. If only young men and women would adopt this as their life guide instead of The Catcher In The Rye perhaps John Lennon would still be with us. Calvert DeForest aka Larry "Bud" Melman is an absolute master.
Book Description
For Annie Spiegelman, motherhood is a full-time job. The hours are long, the pay is lousy, and the recognition is almost nil. Then, during her son’s second year, her mother, with whom she has always had a tempestuous relationship, becomes ill. In this wonderfully wry and touching collection of journal entries written to her son, Spiegelman chronicles her insights, insecurities, joy, and confusion about family and parenthood. While her son is going on his second, hell-raising year and her mother’s illness is making her increasingly dependent, Annie also deals with the surprising difficulty of becoming a Master Gardener and her changing relationship with her husband. Finally, Growing Seasons is a celebration of family in all its comfort and complexity.

Book Description
A View from the Cheap Seats is an unlikely book from an unlikely author. By the unwritten laws of life, it shouldn't exist. Kids don't give advice on anything, and few care about their opinions. Kids don't know anything, especially when it involves the hard lessons of life, political matters, religion, the culture war or the nation's current struggles with mental and physical health.
Customer Reviews:
Wise beyond his years.......2007-04-22
Reviewed by Regan Windsor for Reader Views (3/07)
Ryan Latimer has been through a lot in his life: serious childhood depression, eating disorders, surgical procedures, and his search for religion -- all in his short 23-year life. "A View from the Cheap Seats" is not about Ryan Latimer's life however. It is about his views on life - everything from weight loss to religion to politics. What can a 23-year old really know about all of that "grown up" stuff - you'll be surprised, if not amazed, at what this book has to offer.
Written in a conversational manner, Latimer provides a very educated and well-researched view of the many issues facing North Americans today. While the subjects are often controversial, his views do not come across preachy or closed-minded. He offers some facts amongst his viewpoints, thereby providing the reader an opportunity to assess their own views against the facts provided.
His largest chapter deals with Sex, Drugs and...Sex, The Fall of American "Entertainment," in which he reviews and discusses how far the world of movies, music, and video games has fallen. Or is it society that demands more and more shock value in order to be entertained? Either way this chapter exposes the harsh and often sad reality of where our "entertainment" continues to take us.
While the book contains some grammatical errors they are not enough to detract you from the wealth of knowledge this short book provides. It is refreshing to read such clarity from such a young voice. We can only hope Ryan Latimer continues to express his views and share his wealth of knowledge.
"A View from the Cheap Seats" leaves the reader with a very important message - things aren't always what they seem -- so we need to wake up and start paying attention to what's happening, not only with us but also in the world around us. His no excuses message comes across loud and clear. "Do NOT make excuses."
