Customer Reviews:
Great book.......2001-09-05
I really enjoyed this book on two levels. First is is interesting in that it covers the scientific proving of saturation decompression. Second, it is a good read. So many diving books require discipline to finish. Not this one. Highly recommended for decompression divers.
A gem of a book that's much more than its title suggests........2000-09-11
Papa Topside not only captures the heydays of saturation diving leading up to and including the U.S. Navy's SeaLab I,II and III programs - that it does admirably, but it also provides the reader with a unique insight into a warm, humorous and kind hearted man, George Foote Bond, CAPT, MC USN. Any diver who has ever pondered the decompression question will find this a highly informative book - factual, but not overly technical. But it's much more than a book about diving physiology. For this reader the book's main attraction was vicariously meeting a most interesting man and, through him, getting to know many of the people whose lives he touched. Beginning with his days as Dr. George - a country doctor in rural North Carolina, it follows his work in creating the first hospital in the remote area of his practice and then follows his entry into the U.S. Navy where his lifelong passion for diving and dive medicine began. Dr. Bond is the indisputable father of saturation diving and developed the respect and love of those who dove while "Papa" or "Pappy" as he was known, maintained the "topside" watch over all the intricate variables that go into the saturation equation. His frustrations, challenges, victories and defeats - including the tragic loss of a Sealab III aquanaut - are all chronicled in the form of a daily log which Dr. Bond meticulously maintained. But to suggest that reading this book, edited admirably by Helen Siiteri, is merely a dry re-reading of someone else's notes would be grossly inaccurate - if not downright misleading. The author was an undergraduate English major which becomes evident within the first few pages. Reading the book, I felt as though I was sitting in a cozy, book-lined den somewhere while Dr. Bond, puffing his ever present pipe, talked to me about his life, diving and the U.S. Navy. His candor, humility and wonderful sense of humor are a breath of fresh air in today's politically correct world. For example, having learned that a colleague gave up pipe smoking, Dr. Bond provides the most eloquent defense of this pastime I've ever read. Reading this fine book, one gets the increasing sense that we all lost a friend when Dr. Bond passed away in 1983. True to his roots, he is buried back in rural North Carolina near his devoted patients. As a former U.S. naval officer and active diver myself, I suppose the highest praise I could give "Papa Topside" would be to say that it made me feel sorry that I will never get the opportunity to meet Pappy in person and dive under his careful eye. I was truly sorry to reach the book's last page.

Book Description
Across the great desert the caravan follows the eastern star, in search of the newborn king. And at the rear young Ameer trails sadly behind. What gift, he wonders, can one so poor possibly give? Certainly nothing that might compare with the fine tributes of a merchant, or the gold, frankincense, and myrrh of kings. Not even Ameer's beloved dog Ra can give him any comfort. But in Bethlehem they find a king like none before. And to everyone's astonishment, though Ameer has no jewels or marvels to present, his gift of the heart outshines them all.
Floyd Cooper's glowing artwork captures the quiet brilliance of the first Christmas story with renewed beauty. This unique telling of the Nativity, as experienced through the eyes of a child, will warm the heart with the true spirit of the holiday.

In my state of shock and dismay, I asked God over and over again, "Why?" Always, before closing my eyes at night, I prayed for my sons, asking God to keep them healthy, happy, and safe. I never dreamed that a horrific crime would take one of their lives. This nightmare was indeed unbelievable. I was unable to focus. I kept thinking that there had been a mistake; I kept trying to convince myself that it wasn't James who had been killed. I found myself rambling on and on in an attempt to comprehend the reality that I had lost my oldest son. The situation was hopeless.

Book Description
Love is the only hope. It is only because of love that man finds it possible to reach god. If there were no love there would be no religion, no prayer. If there were no love there would be no creativity, no music, no dance, no art, no poetry. If there were no love there would be no beauty, no friendship, no happiness, no intimacy. All that is valuable in life comes through love. Love is the source of all that is nourishing and fulfilling. Love is the only heavenly phenomenon on this earth. Everything else is earthly; therefore it is only through love that one can reach to god and heavenly states of being. Without love, life becomes dull, repetitive and unfulfilling. Love: The Most Precious Gift of Life shows us that we must live with love, because that is the only way to really live. The deeper and realer your love is, the deeper and more meaningful your life is. We must think of love and life as being the same and synonymous.
If love has so many blessings, why do many couples struggle and face so many difficulties in their relationships? In the second part of Love: The Most Precious Gift of Life, the root social and psychological causes of these conflicts are uncovered, and a solution for solving each problem is also presented. And in doing so it helps us to keep our relationships healthy and intimate, and enable us to embrace love, and through love, reach to our highest potential which is self-realization and enlightenment.

Book Description
What would you do if someone close to you was about to die unless you put your own life on the line? There is a moment in ever person's life that has the power to be so defining that it changes the lens through which he or she sees the world. For author Lawrence Liebling, that moment occurs in 1974 when his sister, gravely ill for four years, is desperately in need of a new and risky medical procedure, a kidney transplant. At the age of 20, he is asked to be the donor and he consents. The operation is a success, but the immediate results hide unforeseen consequences. This true story follows relationships over the span of the next 25 years, as they twist and turn down a path of joy and celebration, as well as hardship and tragedy.
The Most Precious Gift is more than a clinical recounting. Liebling weaves a tightly written narrative that asks and answers some of lifes most enduring and thought provoking questions. It encourages us to examine our own lives, probe our innermost feelings to decide what is most important to us. This life-affirming book engages the reader's senses across the spectrum of emotions. It explores our ability to delve into the past in search of answers to questions that travel with us over the course of our lives. Speaking through the power and wisdom of his experience, Liebling opens a mirror to our soul as we join him on his journey to discover "The Most Precious Gift."
Customer Reviews:
Moving.......2001-01-04
This is not a clinical account of a kidney transplant. Rather, it is a very personal account of the author's experience with his sister back in the 1070s. Back then, such transplants were not nearly as common as today. The author recounts the toll his sister's kidney disease had on the entire family and what the family went through both before the surgery and in the remaining decades of his sister's life. One minor criticism, the author does not state which hospital the surgery took place in. I am interested in such details. Nonetheless, this is a very moving personal account of how the donor, recipient and family coped with kidney diseaes, the transplant and it's aftermath.
the most precious gift.......2000-04-16
This true story is told in a gentle, caring manner, and is easy to read for both young and old alike. Lawrence Liebling reflects on the conflict that he encounters about a decision that will not only impact on his life, but on his sister's and family's life forever. This story is about love, faith, courage and trust that every reader can relate to. It gives the reader a chance to reflect on his/her values. The author ultimately conveys the power of love through his story. Liebling's sensitivity and insights are meaningful, and touch the heart. The reader will reflect on the meaning of life and relationships, laugh and cry, and be touched by this beautiful story.
The Most Precious Gifgt.......2000-04-13
I read this most sensitive book about the lives of both a brother who donated his kidney and his sister who was the recepient. The book reveals how the transplant effected both of their lives. This is a timely book since there are many more transplants today than when they went thru their ordeal. The book should be read by those who are about to be a donor, and those who will be a recepient. In addition it should be read by any close relatives and friends. There are many sensitive, revealing and beautiful passages The book was well written by Mr Liebling and is easy to read.
.
An easy read for such a difficult topic.......2000-04-07
Liebling writes with warmth and depth on a most difficult subject: donating a kidney to his sister. It is a surprisingly easy read for such a topic.

Customer Reviews:
A Most Precious Gift.......2001-03-28
This book is written from the heart by a true Christian who is showing how the teachings of the Bible can help us in our everyday lives.
The reading flows because the author tells interesting true-life family stories, and relates them to scriptures in the Bible. Thus showing, through Grace and acceptance of God as our Savoir, we will be more caring and less judgmental Christians.
The chapters in this book could be used as a teaching tool in Sunday School discussions.
An Enlightening and Moving book.......2001-03-28
I thoroughly enjoyed this inspiring and thought provoking book. It is a timeless treasure. The book enabled me to find the tools to help me incorporate God into my daily life. Carol Eckdahl's words strenghtened my faith in God. A definite most read!!!
Book Description
Suceeding in College with Asperger Syndrome demystifies the range of college experiences for students with AS. It is a must for these students, their parents and counselors alike, providing benefits that will continue throughout the college years and beyond.
Customer Reviews:
This book 'suceeds' with me.......2006-05-06
Even though I don't have Asperger Syndrome, the text within this book described many challenges I and friends had faced. University administrators and some faculty attempted to talk down to and ignore us only because we were people with disabilities.
Like one of Harpur's suggestions, we formed an impromptu student organization--which DID bring ADA renovations to campus.
I also appreciate the information on sexuality and stress management. Conceding his readers are adults, Harpur does not condescend under the misguided and outdated notion of protecting college students with disabilities. He assumes they will be enrolled alongside students without disabilities.
Plus, he then concedes that despite our making it to college we might still enter with unresolved issues from high school--and dealing with the past proactively is essential to the possibility of a better future.
I've been leery of many 'college student with disability' books. Those other texts remained fixated on having students enroll only at certain campuses across the country regardless of actual options. This implies that disability accomodations are a 'favor' available only from certain schools as opposed to being federal civil rights law.
However, this author took a much different approach. He wants people with disabilities totally aware of our own responsibilities and proactively exercising it on college campuses throughout the country. He wants us in and then completing college because we already knew what to do.
I would feel very good giving this book to ANY college-bound person with a disability.
Great guide!.......2005-10-26
This book addresses the social needs of Asperger young adults at a very basic, practical level. At the same time it acknowledges the academic brilliance of these young adults, and how they can use their strengths in intelligence to help accommodate for their social shortcomings.
A very handy book.......2005-09-01
I found this book to be an extremely practical book regarding the survival of Asperger's Sydnrome sufferers in college. Given that the majority of young AS people would end up at college, this book is essential reading.
It outlines a lot of the challenges faced by AS students in college, particularly social challenges. Many of these things are second nature to non AS students, but to the AS students a lot of these things take time and effort to understand and put into practice.
The book is written in a very simple and concise manner, and clearly goes through every logical step of any argument or situation (which is vital for AS sufferers).
That being said, this isn't any sort of 'all answer' of 'cure' book to AS, simply because nothing like that exists. It's simply a handbook that contains practical advice and tips for the AS student.
However, one of the overriding themes of the book was the emphasis on therapy and counselling for the AS student. It seemed as if the end of every paragraph had the recommendation 'see your therapist' or something similar. I grew tired of hearing that point.
Personally, I am a self-diagnosed AS student, a conclusion I reached after, quite by accident, hearing Dr Tony Attwood speak on television one day. I am only just now, almost at the end of my tertiary education, looking into AS in great detail. I only wish that I had had this book when I had first started at university. It would have saved me from a lot of embarrassing moments and awkward situations. However, I draw confidence from the fact that a lot of the methods and tips given in this book I actually developed on my own, before I had any idea about AS.
I personally feel that AS is more common that currently thought (about 1 in 250 people), and that as research into AS continues, we will begin to understand more and more about the syndrome. I hope to one day see programs in schools (particularly at the primary level) to recognise AS in students at a young age and help them deal with the condition.
This book is required reading for anyone who has, or knows somebody who has, Asperger's Syndrome.
Helpful.......2005-08-17
I have not finished the book yet, but so far, the information is useful for the population of students that I work with. I am interested in starting an Asperger's Support Group and am focusing on the information in the chapter related to that.
Well written. Some of the language is different because it was written in another country.
Too Little Info.......2005-04-08
I never trust a book that spends the entire first chapter telling you what you will learn from the book. And it only got worse, it seems like the authors spent most of their "ink" telling us what we were going to learn. There was some useful info, but it could have been offered in a 3 pages pamphlet.

A Practical and Simple Guidebook for Preserving Food.......2000-08-15
I used to feel intimidated about preserving fresh vegetables. I thought all sorts of expensive equipment and a vast knowledge of preserving were needed in order to successfully preserve food. Then I purchased a copy of The Busy Person's Guide to Preserving Food and was delighted to find that I could almost effortlessly preserve many of the fresh vegetables I grew and still have good results with the finished product. Now, I look forward to a healthy crop of green beans, yellow squash, zucchini, and tomatoes and no longer wonder what I'll do with all of the produce.
Great Book.......2000-03-28
This is an easy book to follow. I've never canned before and this book made it easy. The results were good also.
