YABBA DABBA DOO!...A BEHIND THE SCENES TRIP DOWN MEMORY LANE WITH ONE OF THE PIED PIPERS OF BABY-BOOMERDOM.......2006-06-24
I recently read this book and loved it! It brought back many happy childhood memories of hours spent watching Hanna-Barbera cartoons.
This is an honest, straight-forward book by a very talented man. If you've ever seen and loved (who hasn't) a Hanna-Barbera cartoon, and wondered what it took to get them on TV, (it took several tries to make Fred Flintstone a star) then you owe it to yourself to read this book...Enjoy!
Really cool book!.......2004-06-12
This book talks about Joe Barbera's amazing life. Also, the book talks about my favorite cartoon character, Scooby-Doo, and many other famous cartoon characters he and his partner, William Hanna, made.
MY LIFE IN TOONS.......2000-07-06
An inspiring book for any student of animation, as the author details his life building a huge cartoon empire. Hanna/Barbera went from producing 40 mins a year to 2 and a half hours per week in the matter of afew years..an amazing achievement in any mans language. The book does falter however and reminds me of teh cover picture of Joe barbera ( resplendant in what looks like dyed hair,. a face lift and capped teeth. ) I think a more "warts and all " approach would have been far more interesting..
From a fellow Brooklynite and Artist... 4 Stars.......1998-11-05
I thoroughly enjoyed reading Joe Barbera's autobiography. It is interesting to delve into the mind of the animator, and more appropriately into one who has made great strives in the animation movement and who has played a part in almost all of our childhoods. Taking a view "behind the scenes" and recognizing the hard work and creativity that went behind the ultimate product-- cartoons that we sat plastered to each and every Saturday morning-- to me, a fellow artist from Brooklyn, was truly enjoyable. My thanks to Hanna-Barbera for some enjoyable years...
Holds your attention, but too smug.......1998-08-17
This book is never boring. It always held my attention. But Barbera should admit to some of the astehetic weaknesses in his work. (Like the fact that every Sooby Doo episode is exactly the same.)
According to this book, a test screening was run with a "Jetsons" episode, and test audiences supposedly roared with laughter throughout. That's a questionable claim. "The Jetsons" is not garbage, but anyone who has seen it would find it very hard to believe that anyone could actually laugh out loud throughout an episode! (I'd say the better Jetsons episodes have about two or three chuckles, tops.)
It is interesting to learn that H-B hired one of the writers of "The Honeymooners" to write "The Flintstones". And they were dumb enough to let him go! I think "The Flintstones" could have greatly benefitted from the wit of "The Honeymooners", which was so often missing.
I am also peeved that Barbera tries to take credit for "inventing" made-for-TV animation. Hanna-Barbera's first made-for-TV cartoon series was 1958's "Ruff and Reddy", which came nine years _after_ Jay Ward's "Crusader Rabbit"! What's more, "Ruff And Reddy" copied Crusader Rabbit's format and style so closely, Barbera can't claim he's never seen it! Why can't Barbera give proper credit where it's due?
And since Barbera clearly lied about having invented TV animation, I wondered if there was anything else in his book he may have also lied about.
The thing that irritates me the most, however, is Barbera's smug, self-righeous comparison of H-B cartoons to Beavis and Butt-head. The following passage is from page 215:
"I am proud of _The_ _Greatest_ _Adventure,_ just as Bill Hanna and I are proud of every cartoon we've done. I think that's a remarkable statement to make -honestly- at this point in a half-century career. This is not to say that everything we've done has been a terrific financial success or great entertainment -but it has _all_ been entertainment, and it has all been crafted with high regard for our young audience. We have never been tempted to go the way of some of the recent violent, emotionally exploitive, and generally irresponsible cartoon series, one of which may have even prompted children to acts of arson."
It's very disappointing to to find this kind of reactionary nonsense coming from Joe Barbera. For one thing, unlike Jerry the mouse, Beavis and Butt-head have never committed any acts of arson. The closest they come to it is Beavis gleefully chanting "Fire! Fire!" when he watches a music video with fire in it.
And remember that this is coming from the co-creator of TOM AND JERRY, which, entertaining as it is, is also one of the most violent cartoons of all time.
Both Tom the cat and Beavis and Butt-head have put dogs in washing machines. As for acts of arson, there was a scene in a Tom and Jerry cartoon called "The Flying Cat" in which Jerry sets Tom on fire.
Like Tom and Jerry, Beavis and Butt-Head is intended solely as entertainment. Both series succeed more often than not. Joe, please get off your high horse and learn to laugh at Beavis and Butt-head like the rest of us.
About the persisting "arson" claims against Beavis and Butt-head: A highly publicized news event, in which a five-year-old girl supposedly set her family's trailer on fire because of B&B, was later revealed to be pure B.S. The girl's family did not have cable TV, and the girl who set the fire had _never_ _seen_ Beavis and Butt-head! Nevertheless, MTV conformed to pressure and censored the word fire from all subsequent B&B episodes.
Aside from the self-congradulatory tone and outright dishonesty in at least one part, "My Life In 'Toons" is captivating reading for anyone who is interested in animation. Hanna and Barbera had to struggle very hard to build their huge empire up from nothing, and must still constantly struggle to sustain it. That aspect makes this book a good source of inspiration for anyone wishing to start a business of any kind.

Must have for AD support folks........2006-05-27
I use this book and also the author's AD cookbook daily to help with supporting our global Active Directory server infrastructure. This is an absolutely indispensable reference.
Very helpful to admins / IT support.......2006-03-13
We're a software engineering company, and I maintain our internal servers (6-7 servers) as well as provide customer support on our products. A lot of that involves asking for information from the customer - and this book helps in putting together scripts that I can send out that will send back information to us that avoids us asking to exchange 5 emails to get the same result. Anything that saves my time - and our customers time - is worthy of purchasing. Well done, well organised book - and the author returns emails!
Start here, it is all here!.......2006-03-04
This book has a sound foundation for managing a windows 2003 server. The chapters are logically organized. I used some of the examples in the book to migrate some file shares in my network from unix to windows, the book was there for the rescue (the fact that the author has a solid windows/unix experience makes this book even more attractive). The solutions in this book include windows scripting, an area that is seldom talked about in windows literature. If you are serious about managing a windows 2003 server competently then you want to have this book in your arsenal.
Great Book........2005-12-14
This book is a great resource covering a wide variety of interactions with Windows Servers. Whether you are new or experienced, this book is an invaluable tool.
Great Resource for Admins.......2005-12-11
This book is not one for beginners who don't know what they are doing and are looking for detailed explanations of topics. This is made purely for the admin who needs to get a job done, and quickly, and knows already what they are trying to accomplish. I really appreacieate all the scripting examples and also how Rob puts in some great building blocks for scripting (like how to redirect your output to an excel file rather than just the usual Wscript.Echo output that you can redirect to a text file or to stdout). Great Job Robbie!!

Book Description
One of the secrets to the ever-increasing popularity of Windows Server can be found in the simplicity its administration. The easy-to-use GUI, consistent set of tools, and wizards that walk you through complex tasks allow you to install, configure and maintain Windows servers without any knowledge of programming or scripting languages or learning complicated command-line syntax. It's possible, in fact, to accomplish about 90% of all Windows administration without ever opening a command prompt or running a script! But what about the other ten percent of the time? While it's true that most common, day-to-day tasks of Windows administration can be performed from the GUI, it's not always the best way, especially with complex or repetitive tasks Scripts and command-line tools often provide a faster, more flexible approach. Windows Server Hacks reveals techniques that go well beyond basic management tasks found in most handbooks to help busy system administrators master the more powerful features of Windows Server. Windows Server Hacks focuses on scripts and other tools that will make your life as an administrator much easier. These tools, or hacks--quick and dirty solutions to problems, or clever ways of doing things--were created by other professionals who've also had to struggle to find solutions to administering Windows environments. You'll save valuable time using their scripts, tools, tips, and advice. Plus, you can easily learn to customize the scripts to create even more powerful tools for your own, specific needs. The book includes secrets of the masters in such areas as Active Directory, User Management, Group Policy, DNS and DHCP, File and Print, IIS, performance and security. The hundred, industrial strength hacks in the book range from those that deal with general administration to more esoteric hacks in the areas of network deployment, patch management, and backup and recovery. No matter which Windows server you use--NT, IIS, 2000, or 2003--this book will put the knowledge and expertise of veteran system administrators and hackers to work for you. Windows Server Hacks will make your life easier while expanding your understanding of the capabilities of Windows Server.

Overall a good reference, but needs more examples.......2006-05-04
I had a need to run a .exe file on a remote machine. So I typed in the "ExecuteAll.vbs" script example from page 27. The script runs and prompts me for the information. But the command I feed to the script never executes on the remote server. The command can be run manually on the remote server. So I know the command is good. I even tried the command that's shown as an example and even that didn't work.
Overall the book is good. But more examples of different ways to utilize the scripts in the book would be a plus.
Good book....but mislabled?.......2006-03-14
The definition of "hack" is as follows:
To write or refine computer programs skillfully.
To use one's skill in computer programming to gain illegal or unauthorized access to a file or network.
This is a good book.....the name should be changed, however, to "Windows Server Shortcuts and Tricks"....not "hacks".
The book has many good tips, tricks and shortcuts to make life easier for the administrator. I'm always buying books to make sure I am as knowledgeable as possible. This book has good information for my daily job tasks and I recommend it. But I was surprised not to find any "hacks" per se.....something using NMAP or another program used to attack NetBIOS....this is not THAT kind of book.
Ideal for the Windows Administrator.......2004-07-29
This squat 350 page book is filled with practical advice for anyone tasked with the administration of one or more Windows servers. It covers simple remote machine management, Active Directory, IIS, and the truly annoying Windows DNS issues. Screen shots are kept to a minimum and graphics are used effectively. Concepts are explained but not rat-holed and the topics covered are practical. The only thing keeping me from giving this a perfect ranking are the often longish code samples that are not annotated and could be referenced on the site as opposed to included in the text.
A must have for starting Windows administrators, definitely worth the look for experienced ones, particularly because of the condensed practical nature of the text with Microsoft Press books so often lack.
A seminal and invaluable reference shelf addition.......2004-07-09
Managing a Windows based system is almost always problematic for even the most experienced manager team. Enter Mitch Tulloch's Windows Server Hacks: 100 Industrial-Strength Tips & Tools which specifically focuses upon scripts and other tools that will make any and all Windows server maximize its utility while minimizing managerial resources to keep it operational and on-line. This 357-page compendium of tips, tricks and techniques is wonderfully well organized so as to have solutions and explanations at the beck and call of even the most novice Windows system user. Confidently recommended, Windows Server Hacks is a seminal and invaluable reference shelf addition.
Fantastic.......2004-06-15
A fantastic book with many script hacks that most admins don't know about. I have used a number of the hacks in house.

OVER PRICED !!.......2002-05-16
We were very disappointed in this book. We really expected something more comprehensive. However, upon closer examination of the editorial review it is not touted as a text for Admins. It DOES reference "new users" and "students". But given that, this book is WAY OVER PRICED for the amount of information it contains. While the book does contain some good information, there were times when I found it less than accurate. For the amount you are paying for this text, that seems inexcusable. Personally, there are a lot better books for the target group(s) this is aimed at for a whole lot less money. However, I give it the three stars because a lot of information is treated well for beginners. In fact, we would give it more stars in that respect, but the price is ridiculous.
A Terrific Book.......2001-06-14
This a very good book which simplifies the in and outs of Windows NT Administration and Security, in 247 pages (that is amazing). The illustrations are simple and easy to follow. As a student of the topic "Administration and Security" I find this text invaluable and well worth owining and reading. A great reference book for your personal library.

Right On Target.......2002-07-24
For anyone who grew up LDS/Mormon (as I did), and/or for anyone familiar with Mormonism as an adult, this book (assuming the reader possesses a sense of humor and is not overly defensive) is a pure, cover-to-cover hoot. The cartoon drawings are as funny as the captions.
One example: Two Mormon congregations, one in Utah, the other in Bolivia, are shown during a religious service. The congregations differ only in clothing, the Utahans in typical USA Sunday best, the Bolivians in indigenous native attire. The men, women and children in both congregations are otherwise identical in ages, sizes, pew locations, body positions and facial expressions, all sound asleep with heads drooped to the side and mouths hanging open. The caption reads, "The gospel is the same everywhere," a statement very often proudly stated in Mormon meetings.
I think it was Oscar Wilde who said, "If you're going to tell people the truth, you'd better make them laugh or they will kill you." This book is a cleverly illustrated look at comically stated truths. I laughed out loud at most of these cartoons.
A hilarious insight into the Mormon culture!.......1999-01-11
This book is worth the 4-6 week wait and triple it's Amazon.com price. If you are Mormon, and even if you're not, this book is absolutely side-splitting. Kirby has an eagle eye for the foibles of his religion, and cheerfully exaggerates them to turn his normal Utah Mormon ward into a funny world. His observations of the mundane Mormon functions had me falling out of the chair with laughter. It's a good thing I wasn't reading it during sacrament meeting!
