Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars AN ABSOLUTE MUST READ.......2004-06-19

IF YOU ARE LOOKING TO IMPROVE ALL ASPECTS OF YOUR LIFE THIS IS THE BOOK TO LIVE BY.

IT DOES NOT OFFER A QUICK FIX BUT GIVES LONG TERM ADVISE ON HOW TO GET IN TOUCH WITH BASICS AGAIN.

5 out of 5 stars Challenging but hugely beneficial information.......1999-06-21

This book is the English translation of the hugely popular German book "Aus eigener Kraft".

For the 'modern' western mind, the subject of lunar influence on our lives may sound esoteric and far-fetched, but once you start applying some of Johanna's and Thomas' advice, you will realize its relevance and practical application.

Moon Time explains to you in simple terms who the lunar cycles influence our lives, and how we can use them to live a healthier and more harmonious life - which is also a lot cheaper than maintaining the one we currently live.

It explains each sign, its significance as part of the lunar cycle, and what it means to you in your daily life. It also touches briefly on other subjects and has a chapter dedicated to builiding in harmony with nature.

It's a superb read, but also look out for the translation of the book "Zum richtigen Zeitpunkt" ("At the right time"), which has even more practical examples.

      Book Description

"Any writer worth his salt knows that what cannot be spoken is ultimately the thing worth speaking about; yet most often this humbling awareness is unsaid or covered up. There are some who have made it their business, however, to court failure and acknowledge defeat, to explore the impasse of words before silence. William Franke has created an anthology of such explorations, undertaken in poetry and prose, that stretches from Plato to the present. Whether the subject of discourse is All or Nothing does not matter: the struggle of speech to name the unnameable is the same. This ambitious two-volume undertaking demonstrates a preoccupation as old as Western civilization itself: the limits of language and the virtue of being at a loss for words. How long we have been raiding the Inarticulate!" -- Peter S. Hawkins, Boston University

"Developments in critical theory during the past two decades have led to renewed interest in negative theology. Books like Languages of the Unsayable (1989), Negation and Theology (1992), Derrida and Negative Theology (1992), and The Otherness of God (1998) have signaled the resurgence of this ancient tradition. William Franke's distinctive contribution is to provide the background and texts from which these recent developments have emerged." -- Mark Taylor, Williams College

Apophasis has become a major topic in the humanities, particularly in philosophy, religion, and literature. This monumental two-volume anthology gathers together most of the important historical works on apophaticism and illustrates the diverse trajectories of apophatic discourse in ancient, modern, and postmodern times. William Franke provides a major introductory essay on apophaticism at the beginning of each volume, and shorter introductions to each anthology selection. The second volume, Modern and Contemporary Transformations, contains texts by Hölderlin, Schelling, Kierkegaard, Dickinson, Rilke, Kafka, Rosenzweig, Wittgenstein, Heidegger, Weil, Schoenberg, Adorno, Beckett, Celan, Levinas, Derrida, Marion, and more.

        Book Description

Over the past century American agriculture has shifted dramatically with small, commercial farms finding it increasingly difficult to compete with large-scale (mostly indoor) animal feeding operations (AFOs). In this book, Terence J. Centner investigates the environmental, social, economic, and political impact of the rise of the so-called factory farm, exposing the ramifications of the contemporary trend toward industrial-scale food production.

Just as Rachel Carson's landmark Silent Spring used the disappearance of songbirds as a jumping-off point for a work that raised public awareness of pesticides' devastating environmental impact, Empty Pastures sees the dwindling numbers of livestock in the American countryside as a symptom of a broader transformation, one with serious consequences for the rural landscape and its inhabitants--animal as well as human.

After outlining the rise of the AFO, Centner examines the troubling consequences of consolidation in animal farming and suggests a number of remedies. The issues he tackles include groundwater contamination, the loss of biodiversity, animal welfare, concentrated odors and other nuisances, soil erosion, and the economic effects of the disappearance of the small family farm.

Inspired by largely abandoned traditional practices rather than a radical and unrealistic vision of a return to an idealized past, Centner proposes a series of pragmatic reforms for regulating factory farms to halt ecological degradation and revitalize rural communities.

            Book Description

Addressing the persistent environmental threat of organic chemicals with a fresh approach to degradation and transformation processes, Environmental Degradation and Transformation of Organic Chemicals examines a wide range of compounds as well as abiotic and microbiological reactions mediated by microorganisms. The book emphasizes the pathways used and the broad classes of enzymes involved. It provides an overview of experimental procedures with detailed coverage of the organic compounds that are considered to be xenobiotics. The book begins by providing a broad perspective on abiotic and biotic reactions, including the significance of a range of environmental determinants. The following chapters briefly introduce experimental procedures and emphasize those procedures for establishing the structure of metabolites using isotopes and physical methods. Next, the authors outline details of biochemical reactions involved in the biodegradation of the major groups of aliphatic, carbocyclic aromatic, and heterocyclic compounds. They end with coverage of bioremediation that has attracted increasing concern because of the hazard presented by the disposal of unwanted chemicals or by-products from their manufacture. Broad and comprehensive, this book provides a cohesive treatment of the subject. It contains an extensive set of literature references and numerous illustrative figures. The authors use a mechanistic approach with emphasis on the pathways, and the principles that emerge provide a guide not only for specific compounds but also for those having a more remote structural resemblance.

              Book Description

Whilst genetic transformation of plants is commonly viewed as a means of bringing about plant improvement, it has not so readily been recognised as a tool for analysing the function of plant genes. This book is unusual in that it focuses on the genetic transformation of a range of plants using a number of different methods. Many plants have been found to be quite difficult to transform, and so various techniques were developed. These techniques include: Agrobacterium suspension drops, electroporation, PEG, "whiskers", and various biolistic methods. A chapter on intellectual and property rights is included.

                  Book Description

Muses have fascinated for millennia, yet seldom receive as much exposure as the artistic geniuses they inspire. New science places much emphasis on the role of the observer as the catalyst or creator of reality, offering here a fresh perspective on what happened when Lewis Carroll played with Alice Liddell, when Rainer Maria Rilke dreamt of Lou Andreas Salome, or when John Lennon wrote for his one and only Yoko Ono. An interconnected, quantum view of the world is used to explain the magic of muses, and can also be used to channel inspiration more prominently into everyday life. Featuring a bite-sized chronology of muses from ancient Greece to the 21st century, and exploding the myth that muses are always women, the book finishes with a scientific look at the future of inspiration.

First of several volumes collecting Collins' masterful yet controversial 15-year run, including the stories "Angel Top's Last Stand," "Return of Haf-and Haf," and "Big Boy's Revenge."

                      Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03

This book is reprinting the stories from when Max Allan Collins took over the strip in 1978, and this collection contains some strips from 1978-1979 and three stories.

Angeltop's Last Stand, where the children of a couple of Tracy's enemies come back.

The Return of Haf-and-Haf, where the two faced guy gets some plastic surgery.

The longest story is Big Boy's revenge, which is about half the book. Tracy's old enemy gets out of jail, and puts a million dollar open contract on the detective.

5 out of 5 stars Holy cow, this is good stuff!.......2004-05-06

I was never much of a Dick Tracy fan, but this collection has made me take notice of the classic comic strip detective. Collecting January through December of 1978, this is the first full year written by Max Alan Collins (Road to Perdition) and drawn by creator Chester Gould's assistant Rick Fletcher. It brings Dick Tracy into the "modern era", but it doesn't give him or his cast a makeover. Tracy is up against multiple antagonists: an old foe who is losing his influence, the vengeful descendants of other old foes, and the nosy reporter who portrays him as a relic of a more violent time. Collins' plotting and storytelling will keep you on your toes, and Fletcher's artwork, while extremely faithful to Gould's quirky renderings, is very stylized and clean. The best part is how Collins and Fletcher work together to present a masterful example of pacing. This collection is an excellent example of the narrative style of the serialized comic strip.

5 out of 5 stars not a collins fan, but I totally recommend this book.......2004-03-20

I am not a fan of much of Max Allan Collins' work, but this book is a great exception. The reprints of the first three storylines that Collins wrote are very entertaining and make for an enjoyable read.

The first storyline features Angeltop, the popular Flattop's daughter, and the son of the Brow. The next storyline revolves around the Two-Face type villain Haf-and-Haf. Both of these stories were already reprinted in other Dick Tracy books. The final storyline (and most interesting) has to do with an aged and dying Big Boy offering an open contract to kill Dick Tracy. Collins tips his hat to favorite Chester Gould villains and other characters and cleans up a few of Gould's (I hate to say it) mistakes like Moon Maid. Good story, well-paced, great artwork.

I look forward to the future volumes of this series. I am disappointed by the Dick Locher cover--a Fletcher cover would have seemed more appropriate.

This is a very nice collection of quotations. It's fairly comprehensive and organized topically--though it could benefit from an index of authors. I added over 100 of its entries to my quote collection. Many are humorous, and a great many have wisdom and significance. Some of my favorites are:

                      p. 53: One beautiful morning, El Greco sat in a room with the curtains tightly drawn. Invited to go out for a walk, El Greco said, "No, the sunlight would disturb the light that is shining within me."
                      p. 181: Flattery is all right if you don't inhale. Adlai Stevenson
                      p. 186: Wise men talk because they have something to say, fools because they have to say something. Plato
                      p. 258: Journalism: a profession whose business is to explain to others what it personally does not understand. Lord Northcliffe
                      p. 279: The optimist proclaims that we live in the best of all possible worlds, and the pessimist fears this is true. James Branch Cabell
                      p. 328: In America, the young are always ready to give to those who are older than themselves the full benefit of their inexperience. Oscar Wilde
                      p. 341: Thanks to the interstate highway system, it is now possible to travel across the country from coast to coast without seeing anything. Charles Kuralt
                      p. 344: There is just one thing I can promise you about the outer-space program: your tax dollars will go farther. Wernher von Braun
                      p. 406: Hangover: The Wrath of Grapes. Dorothy Parker
                      p. 439: The scientific theory I like best is that the rings of Saturn are composed entirely of lost airline luggage. Mark Russell
                      p. 505: They told me that the fish...were cold-blooded and felt no pain. But they were not fish who told me. Heywood Broun
                      p. 508: I have made this long letter because I haven't the time to make it shorter. Blaise Pascal

As far as a book on wit goes, this is as good as they get. What I liked best was that this book was by someone who spent his life as a fan, observer, practitioner and most of all a student of humor. This book consists almost entirely of very short pieces of wit;often referred to as one-liners.Rosten has done a good job of explaining all the various forms of 'short' wit;such as,malapropisms, neologisms, epigrams, images, observations, gags, sparkling descriptions ,soleolecisms, wisecracks, typos, transpositions, and so forth.A lot of the comments he makes are as good as the jokes he has included.Make no mistake about it,Rosten was Jewish and he weighs the book heavily with Jewish humor.I was surprised that he did not include anything by Myron Cohen as he was one of my favorites;although I'm not positive and could have missed any. This book is almost an encyclopedia of wit and extremely well arranged in about 300 categories. However, the book would have benefited with an index by 'author'.He addressed the problem of attributions, but I still felt that it would improve the book and is usually done in most books of this type.Maybe he had more fun hanging out with Dorothy Parker than preparing indexes, and for that who could blame him?
We have all heard of the line "He was a legend in his own mind" I think Rosten was a bit of "A wit in his own mind" .I think he quoted himself more than anyone else and that includes the likes of Twain,Wilde,Fields, etc. While a lot of his quotes seemed lacking when sandwiched between the masters ;he had a really good one with "If a picture is worth a thousand words, please paint me the Gettysburg Address" -one of the best!

A fun grab-bag of quotes, not especially rigorously sourced or verified. Rosten quotes himself more than is seemly, but "He that tooteth not his own horn, the same shall go untootethed." A fine souvenir of the mensch who popularized Yiddish culture in America. Hours of fun & sharing guaranteed.

I haven't read the whole book, just seen a lot of the quotes on this online newsletter I get. I would also like to say that reading the other 2 reviews here cracked me up. Obviously, the one from Indiana was not as educated as the one from Colarado. Perhaps he/she didn't understand some of the quotes. I personally agree with the one from Colarado. The quotes are very funny and witty. Leo Rosten wrote quite a few of them himself. Hope you enjoy!
