Great quote book.......2003-07-25
This is another great book of quotes from Southern Generals.
( actually you should by the set, which is four books of these) I really enjoyed the quotes, everyone taken from the history books.
There is one quote, which states, had Lee listened to Longstreet at Gettysburg, the Southern people would today be Free!
( Oh give me a break!)
Ok, that is a direct quote, but it's one Longstreet wrote, simplying putting words in Lee's mouth.
Please don't discard the book for this single quote, as it's a great book.
I'd like to see more of these quote books on all the Civil War Generals.
Interesting insight.......2001-10-06
This is one of a series of books with quotes by and about "The South's Great Generals." A slim volume, it takes only a short time to read through.
I enjoyed this collection of quotes, as much for what his Union enemy's said about Longstreet, as what he said himself. However, reading the quotes regarding the criticisms of Lee's Old Warhorse in the battle of Gettysburg are almost painful. Yet they had to be included to give as full a picture of the man and the soldier as can be done in so short a space.
Readers and scholars of the War Between the States will enjoy this book, perhaps even keep it at hand to browse through at any time.

Randall Bedwell's "May I Quote You ..." series is always a pleasure to read. General Longstreet was a plain spoken man, and Mr. Bedwell has captured the essence of him exactly! From General Longstreet, an undeservedly maligned American patriot, I have found words to live by: "Error lives but a day. Truth is eternal." If you enjoyed this book, try my other two favorites in the series, "May I Quote You General Lee?" and "May I quote You General Forrest?"

Book Description
An unsophisticated young female physician admits she is not the self-assured intern she pretends to be in 1957 and decides to delay private practice to seek more experience. She ends up in a world far different from the overly protected Italian-American background of her youth. She accepts a position with a hospital owned by the United Mine Workers of America that provides free medical care to miners and their families. Though the time is late1950s, the harsh living conditions she describes had not changed much from such Depression-era visions as James Agee and Walker Evans's Let Us Now Praise Famous Men. Her book is also reminiscent, albeit a generation earlier, of Rory Kennedy's award-winning documentary film, American Hollow.
The book is a vivid portrait of an individualistic young woman, raised in a close-knit family, tasting the joy of living on her own for the first time. Now she is headed to eastern Kentucky to practice medicine, in a male dominated field, on the mountaineer coal miners who are not used to female physicians. Her experiences in the emergency room both shatter and thrill her as one after another strange case challenges her in this new world.
The beauty of the eastern Kentucky mountains is contrasted to the narrow streets of South Philadelphia when Dr. Mariotti describes the Appalachian countryside she came to know so well. She finds her patients a learning experience, which later influenced her 40-year practice in southern New Jersey, and that "caring" for patients has a double meaning in that the "care" goes both ways.

I've read dozens of self-help type books over the years, so I no longer expect to encounter anything terribly "new" when reading a book that advises a person to slow down and smell the roses, so to speak. So I confess that I approached this book with a bit of cynicism. But this book will move even the worst cynic. It spoke to me in a way that no other book has and inspired me to make major changes in my life that I've talked about making for many years. The recommendations may feel familiar - eat well, rest, get your finances under control, practice forgiveness - but the author inspires by making clear that taking good care of one's self is a spiritual task of the highest order. Adopting a set of practices that help us to achieve a pace of grace is necessary to ensure that we honor - every hour of every day - the virtues within us and bring our best and highest self to every relationship, challenge and opportunity in our lives. I cannot recommend this book more highly. In fact, I am about to send it to a friend.

I enjoy reading; but I don't always hold onto many books. This is a keeper. It offers workable ideas on "restoring grace, sanity, and vitality to our lives".

Refreshing, renewing, and full of hope! A Pace of Grace is the first book I have craved to read in its entirety. It is nourishing and so practical to apply to all types of lifestyles. The author, Linda Kavelin Poppov, has shared such a treasure and delivers her experiences with such tenderness and understanding that those who read her book will be inspired to make little shifts in their personal lives to allow for a "graceful" life.

A Pace of Grace is a book to keep by your side, not one to put aside. It is a book I will read over and over again and have purchased many copies for my friends. The author's real life anacdotes make it a very readable book. At the end of each chapter she highlights the main points and introduces the reader to what is coming next. This helps to build anticipation. The author offers manageable solutions to universal frustrations with daily living. After reading each chapter I was energized and motivated to make some needed changes in my life. I am very grateful to have this inspirational resourse and love sharing it with others.

This book has some of everything in it. If you are interested in exploring methods beyond basic buttercream this is your book! Well written for the average beginner to cake decorating it gives you step by step instructions for so many decorating techniques. A great book for anyone attempting a new technique. You will learn enough to know whether or not you want to persue the technique further.

This would be an essential guide if you work with fondant, mold gumpaste flowers, or model paste figures. There are step-by-step photos about how to make a wide variety of flowers, how to use basic tips for piping, how to model a variety of animals and people, and how to marbelize fondant. There are some gorgeous fondant designs--my favorites are the stacked pastel square packages, a castle, a teddy bear picnic, and a white-on-white Christmas cake. There are also some wedding cake designs that are quite different from anything you'd find in a Wilton yearbook.
This guide also offers a great section on elegant gateaux, from custard meringue to tiramisu, cappuccino truffle, and pears with a spun toffee halo, all with beautiful pictures. It also includes basic cake recipes, as well as decorating tips with pastillage, run-outs or colorflow, and a variety of other techniques.
There are a number of recipes and designs to inspire a baker or any decorator with a flair for fondant. If you'd rather pipe your icing and use molded chocolate accents, it's not an essential guide to cake decorating for you . . . just nice to look through the pictures.

A MUST!!.......2002-08-21
This is a must for anyone that is starting out in cake decorating and needs any inspiration or ideas. Once someone has the basic knowledge of decorating, anything in the book can be accomplished or adapted to something applicable. The full color photos and explanations are great, although it takes a bit of getting use to in the English/British "vernaculur" that it is written. It once again proves that the English have taken cake decorating to an art form and us Yanks really need to step up to the plate.
Exquisite and brimming with originality!.......2002-04-23
I got this book today on a whim, and flipping through it made me want to run out and whip up a cake just to see if I could create a fraction of the magic these cakes possess. I loved going through the vibrant color photographs and admiring the interesting designs (although I have to admit some of these seem much too complicated to be attempted by someone who isn't a professional pastry chef). However, that doesn't detract from the fact that the book is beautiful and informative, and even if I never get one cake to look the same as it does in the book, I won't regret a thing. This guide is a feast for the eyes as well as the imagination! (The sugar flowers alone took my breath away!)

This book has a glossary of cake decorating terms. It has pictures of a variety of tools used in cake decorating. There are recipes for not only basic cakes, but all types of icing used in cake decorating. The cake recipes are in chart form so you can make anywhere from a 6 inch cake on up to larger cakes. This book also has instructions on preparing cake boards and cake assembly. It's a great book to have as a resource. There are also lots of nice pictures.

The Essential Guide to Cake Decorating provides beautiful colour illustrated pictures on common sugarcraft flowers and cakes.It also provides the basic requirements for cake decoration e.g. types of equipments used, covering cake using marzipan, royal icing, sugarpaste etc. The book is so well design and has useful step by step instructions to cake deco.Plus the cake pictures makes me keep looking at the book over and over again!

I am just entering the world of cake decorating and this happened to be the 1st book I skimmed/read! It is wonderful. I was looking for details and that is what I got! Merehurst Ltd even gives a brief history on the subject- which was very interesting! There are lots of different cakes you can make yourself and also detailed pictures and explanations! I just borrowed this book from the library, so I have to return it...but I'll definately be buying it. I think it's a must-have for cake decorators everywhere!

I adore this book! Finally, some unique cake decorating ideas -- not just the same old look and style. This user-friendly book takes you from the very beginning, starting with all the equipment needed to decorate a beautiful cake. It includes wonderful recipes and detailed instructions on how to bake different kinds of cakes. And then, of course, shows all the decorating techniques needed to decorate a wide variety of cakes. I'm excited about trying out some new ideas!
