    Book Description

"These are photographs of my children....Many of these pictures are intimate, some are fictions and some are fantastic, but most are of ordinary things every mother has seen. I take pictures when they are bloodied or sick or naked or angry. They dress up, they pout and posture, they paint their bodies, they dive like otters in the dark river."--Sally Mann, from the Introduction

Taken against the Arcadian backdrop of her woodland home in Virginia, Sally Mann's extraordinary, intimate photographs of her children-- Emmett, Jessie, and Virginia-- reveal truths that embody the individuality of her immediate family and ultimately take on a universal quality. Mann states that her work is "about everybody's memories, as well as their fears," a theme echoed by Reynolds Price in his eloquent, poignantly reflective essay accompanying the photographs in Immediate Family.

With sublime dignity, acute wit, and feral grace, Mann's pictures explore the eternal struggle for autonomy-- the holding on, and the breaking away. This is the stuff of which Greek dramas are made: impatience, terror, self-discovery, self-doubt, pain, vulnerability, role-playing, and a sense of immortality, all of which converge in Sally Mann's astonishing photographs.

A traveling exhibition of Immediate Family, organized by Aperture, opened at the Institute of Contemporary Art in Philadelphia in the Fall of 1992.

it's just gorgeous to look through. you get to see through the mother's eyes, to see what every mother sees: her children being children; being hurt and sad and happy and playful.

    4 out of 5 stars I loved it!.......2007-06-12

I love photography and having this kind of books exposes me to other peoples work and I love it!

    2 out of 5 stars Yawn........2007-01-15

I did not feel one way or the other about it. Quite boring overall, to be honest. Cannot even remember how I got a hold of it (I certainly did not buy it myself). Sold it off after a few months of trying to find something about it interesting...

5 out of 5 stars Mann Captures Childhood's Natural Beauty.......2006-09-26

It's hard to see why there has been such a legal fuss over the photos contained herein, especially the luminous photos of older daughter Jessie, who was interviewed in the 1993 documentary "Blood Ties", which showed other photos not in the book [alas]. I only hope Mann has a chance to have published other photos of her children from this period, as well as some feom the 4 or 5 years immediately after [from about 1990 to 1995]. In the documentary, daughter Jessie was completely relaxed about all of the fuss, and seemed relaxed about being photographed without any clothes on in several photos. She wore nothing in several unpublished photos I've seen from the same period, like photos entitled "Venus After School", and "The Good Daughter". In an Aperture magazine retrospective on her from the early 2000's, she was very succinct in stating that she saw nothing wrong in any of this, and even more previously unpublished photos were published for the first time, proving that Jessie could be the subject of her own book. Here's hoping! This book is not to be missed! Don't let the controversy scare you away, before it's out of print for good!

    5 out of 5 stars A Vision of Innocence.......2006-07-24

Looking through the photographs in this volume, I feel so glad that Sally Mann's children had the freedom to just be themselves. You can see it in the pictures--nothing is "staged" or "put on," though you *will* see the kids playing at being grown up. Mostly, though, these are pictures of her children dressed and undressed, sprawled in the mud or playing games together or taking a nap. There are a few adult friends, but mostly these are photographs of the children.

They are wonderful. You realize how precious this fleeting phase of life is, and given this opportunity, you can see that children possess their own kind of beauty. I think it's called 'innocence,' and it is one mode of freedom. It's a kind of freedom that seems endangered in this world, so a photographic record of this sort acts as a kind of testimony that childhood can indeed be carefree, natural, and happy.

    Book Description

What does it mean to be a family? New York Times bestselling author Eileen Goudge's engaging new novel is a powerful adventure into the heart of marriage, motherhood, and four friends who discover they may be the best family they ever had.

Fifteen years after graduation, best friends Jay, Franny, Emerson, and Stevie meet at their college reunion. Life has taken each of them in different directions -- Jay is a married man with a baby on the way while Franny yearns for a child as she searches for love in all the wrong places. Divorced single mom Emerson is drawn to a man who challenges everything she's come to believe about finding a once-in-a-lifetime love. And Stevie's life has recently been rocked by a shocking revelation -- the answer to a family secret that will shatter everything she believes about herself.

Now the bond between the foursome takes a surprising twist, one that changes how each feels about family and friendship. One thing is certain: They will all find their heart's desires in the last place they imagine -- as they discover that family is less about blood ties than the warm embrace of ones who accept them as they are.

"Eileen Goudge writes like a house on fire, creating characters you come to love and hate to leave," praises Nora Roberts -- and nowhere do Goudge's bestselling storytelling talents shine brighter than in Immediate Family.

    Customer Reviews:

    1 out of 5 stars Painfully unreadable.......2007-04-10

I'm sure I've read every one of Ms. Goudge's books and, for the most part, have enjoyed each of them. This one, however, was excruciating. I kept waiting for something to happen. Even the death of Jay's and Vivienne's baby was somewhat glossed over - it was obviously just a means of getting Jay single for the sake of the plot.

After I put down the book (unfinished) half way through, I re-read the acknowledgements. Ms. G. dutifully praised her editor. For what, I have absolutely NO idea. The discrepancies were glaring (things an EDITOR is supposed to catch - which is why they're called editors). For example, when Jay is first introduced, he's a farm boy from Iowa. Several chapters later, he's from Wisconsin. When Franny goes into labor she calls her doctor who is on the golf course and she mentions having interrupted his putting. Not two pages later, there's concern about her not making it to the hospital in time to give birth because of the snow storm. Snow storm? But her doctor is golfing!!! This was just too painful to put up with - so it got returned to the library without so much as a backward glance.

Stick to reading (or re-reading) her earlier novels. They're considerably better put together than this one (which I think became the orphan child in order to get her cook book through publishing).

5 out of 5 stars WISH THIS BOOK DID HAVE TO END.......2007-01-08

I just finished reading IMMEDIATE FAMILY, and I didn't want it to end. I am an Eileen Goudge fan. I can't say I have read all of her books, but I have read some, and I have always liked them.

At times I felt that the books was only about Emerson, Franny, and Jay. And Stevie was just an after thought and sprinkled in at times, but that's okay it was a great book. I had a hard time finishing it because I didn't want it to end.

I was really ready to hate and truly dislike Vivienne, Jays wife, and Margaret, Emerson's mother. But Eileen didn't mean for us to hate them. Maybe not like them all that much, but see that they were flawed, human, and products of their upbringings.

Vivienne being a spoiled only child, was not taught that life had consequences, and that in the end life asks you for payment of that consequence. I think she loved Jay and Franny in her own way, but being selfish and self-centered it never occurred to her that they had feelings. Especially Jay. Having to deal with the death of his son alone while she ran off to France.

Margaret was also self-centered, selfish, and I assume spoiled. She also wallowed in her pride, especially after her husband's death. It must have been really hard to keep up a stiff upper lip when she found out that maybe she wasn't totally poor, but just having enough money to live and keep her nice apt. But then in her time it wasn't proper for her to go out and get a job, even if she had a college degree.

4 out of 5 stars Friends and family.........2006-06-21

This book is full of friends and family. I loved this book and these four friends. We have a whole lot of drama and nothing really surprises you but this is a great book to read on an airplane or at the beach. This is by first book by Ms. Goudge but it won't be the last. We have one, who is married and getting ready to have a child. But when his wife suggests that his best friend Franny get pregnant by him so that she can have a child, it changes everything. Another girl has never even known who her dad is and one day her mom just pops out with it. Her dad is being accused of murdering a woman, but the estranged daughter helps exhonerate her dad. Very intriguing book!

4 out of 5 stars A closer look at friendship.......2006-06-12

Four friends, Stevie, Jay, Emerson and Franny, meet at Princeton and continue their friendship long after graduation. This book, although sometimes predictable, tells the story about finding love where you least expect it and how precious friendships can be.

    5 out of 5 stars Classic Goudge---Absolutely Riveting!.......2006-05-14

This is Eileen Goudge at her best! She gives us characters who we really care about and keeps the plot moving in all sorts of unexpected ways. She has insight into so many worlds--from the California hippies to the Park Avenue matrons--insight that gives her books realism and depth. This book cries out for a sequel; I want to know more about what happens to these loveable Princeton friends!

THE CLASSIC WORK ON HELPING CHILDREN OVERCOME

    THE TRAUMA OF DIVORCE

For many years, Growing Up With Divorce has offered divorced parents transformative insight, solace, and practical guidance on how to help their children cope with the stresses caused by marital separation.

Every child is unique, yet there are certain common reactions to the stresses of divorce -- anger, a sense of divided loyalties, lasting intimacy issues. Dr. Neil Kalter explains that, for children, divorce is not a single event but is comprised of "a series of events that occur over many years." Identifying three stages of divorce, Dr. Kalter cites the particular struggles associated with each stage and explains how gender as well as cognitive, emotional, and social development also affect how children react.

Dispensing sage advice on everything from understanding and minimizing the anxieties that underlie various troublesome behaviors to smoothing out your child's transitions between her two households to incorporating a new spouse into your family, Dr. Kalter gives parents and the professionals who treat divorced families an indispensable guide to navigating the difficulties of divorce.

5 out of 5 stars Book on Emotional Effects of Divorce on children and adults.......2007-07-15

This book looks at the emotions and stages that families go through with "good, bad, and ugly divorces". The book includes rarely discussed syndromes that may occur when one or more parents engage in emotional warfare and the resulting trauma for the children. For example, I have never read such a good description of parent alienation. This is an excellent book to give to people while they are considering divorce so they know what they have to face or how to proceed so that the children are spared great pain and fear. It is an excellent guide for mental health professionals for assessment of children and couples. (I am in social work.)

    4 out of 5 stars Helpfull.......2006-07-30

I particularly like the fact that Neil Kalter describes the emotions that children have. As they often hide them in a different way than I would expect as a parent.
Now I can see much more clear what my children reveal to protect me.
Kalter offers good to the point advice on how to help children.
Which is exactly what you need as a parent.
    I greatly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars Imminently helpful to separating families.......1999-10-08

As a divorce mediator, I've loaned several copies of this book to separating couples, never to have them returned. Now that the book has been reprinted, I'm ordering a dozen copies for my program, and will give it to separating parents because of its powerful message: "remove your kids from the middle of your marital conflict!"

5 out of 5 stars Excellent refrence to assist children thru divorce troubles.......1998-10-13

Growing Up With Divorce by Dr. Neil Kalter has proven to be an excellent tool for helping the children through the emotional pitfalls of divorce. It is divided by age catagory, tells of the signs of emotional distress then gives practical solutions to help the children through their issues. Good tool to use again and again.

I've used this book extensively at births, and consider it to be the best book on childbirth homeopathy. I only wish she would write one about prenatal and postpartum homeopathy!

      Thanks!

Don't bother buying this book if you are an architect, which I am. This is not a truly good reference book to aid in the design process. It does not have enough ADA criteria illustrated in graphic form to make it a quick graphical reference. It requires lots of time to wade through Leon's verbose presentation of poorly indexed information. Leon likes to hear himself talk more than getting to the point for the needs of the reader. Obviously the book was written for profit, not as an aid for others. I would not have bought this book if I had seen it first.

5 out of 5 stars Prince Arn Returns to North America.......2007-09-28

As I try to make my way through all 50 volumes of the Prince Valiant Series, one of the things that I like most about the series is that Prince Valiant is always travelling. Earlier in the series, Aleta is kidnapped and taken by Viking raiders to North America. Prince Valiant follows the kidnappers to North America where he frees Aleta. One of the results of this adventure is that their first son Arn, is born in an Indian village somewhere along the St. Lawrence Seaway. In this volume, Prince Arn is fourteen years old and he returns to North America to fulfill a promise that his mother has made. Along with his nursemaid Tillicum, he returns to the village of his birth and has all of the accompanying adventures that one expects in a Prince Valiant story. This is one of the better volumes of the series.

              5 out of 5 stars Lyrical semi-historical chronicle.......2007-03-31

Everybody has heard of Prince Valiant, but not that many have read it. This series reproduces the entire run. The entire 50-volume collection would cost a pretty penny. The paper, reproductions and format do justice to the art, and Fantagraphics deserve our gratitude for bringing us this and other classics such as Krazy Kat.

Prince Valiant differs from other comics in that dialogue balloons aren't used, because they get in the way of the art. Instead, the illustrations have captions underneath. The art style is extremely classical; it does not even use lines of force. While pleasing to the eye, it is very static - it hardly keeps us on the edge of our seats. Still, it is a window on a world long past, apparently conscientiously researched and reconstructed. We see an Amerindian way of life in pre-Columbian America and for me, it's especially interesting to see it in my own backyard (along the Saint Lawrence River, up to Montreal and even further). It's beautiful work.

Prince Valiant, at least in this tome, isn't gripping adventure; if that's what you want, look elsewhere (see my collected reviews). It's more of a lyrical semi-historical chronicle. If I had the budget for it, I'd grab as many of these adventures as I could: those that are out of print seem to be destined to be collectors' items.

5 out of 5 stars Modern Southern Humor-Juliette, Georgia Style.......2006-04-10

The title is what initially caught my attention, and I was impressed with the quality of writing exhibited by the author, Ed Williams. The humor and sarcasm displayed in this book hovers steadily on a tightrope between earthiness and family-friendly aw-shucks hilarity.

One of the most amusing and beautifully crafted stories in this collection is entitled `Rasslin' and Riskin' (Our Asses)' because that's precisely what the author and his 60+ college buddies do one fine Tuesday evening. As Mr. Williams writes: "We knew that the Macon pro wrestling crowd (mostly rural country folks-some came from counties miles away just to see it) didn't take kindly to people cheering for the bad guys. We knew if we did this we'd piss a lot of people off." And Williams skillfully narrates and quotes a lot of comical dialogue from his wild, wild adventures that he and his classmates experienced that night in the Coliseum.

The varied lengths of the pieces from vignettes to full out tales such as the one mentioned above, allow the person who reads this book to really get a feel of what life in central Georgia is like. A loving ode to his grandfather, Ed Sr., who in the chapter quote is succinctly described by his son: "His ass was wilder than yours and mine put together," along with the insightful and fun chapters, `Let's Be Honest About Little League' and `Meetin' BTO' demonstrate Mr. Ed Williams III's innate storytelling abilities.

5 out of 5 stars "Laugh til you cry " funny.......2005-11-13

I won an autographed copy this book in a unique essay contest. I honestly didn't know what to expect when I started reading it. Funny and hilarious are mere words that simply don't do this book justice. I literally laughed until tears were running from my eyes. Ed Williams can spin a tale like no other. Anyone who picks up this book and fails to find a master story teller spinning tales of a simpler life in a simpler time has no sense of humor. Williams has the ability to reach out and take the reader back to a simpler time of nostalgia and humor.

More importantly than the humor is the obvious love, repsect and sincere admiration that Ed Williams has for his father and family. Wiliams writes a loving tribute to his father told with incredible humor and appreciation for a simpler time in life when outhouses were "in" and corn cobs had a unique and imagintive function.

Rough as a Cob is a must read and a book I will cherish and continue to enjoy over and over again.

2 out of 5 stars Tries too hard to be funny.......2005-10-04

"Rough as a Cob," by Ed Williams III, is a compilation of ten stories that attempt to be hilarious, but fail to deliver the punch at the end. They are based on growing up in the rural South of Juliette, Georgia and attempt too hard to use this as the root of the humor. (...)

This book provides stories that are somewhat entertaining about the life of Ed Sr., Ed Jr. and Ed III. Somehow, visions of Ed, Edd and Eddy from the Cartoon Network come to mind. Anyway, we are provided the disturbing life of these three while the author presses hard for the laugh that is an occasional chuckle at most.

Let's be honest. Is a plan to gang up on Santa Claus really considered funny? That is the level of humor we are given from the book.(...) A nice try that falls a few inches short of its goal.

              5 out of 5 stars Hysterically Funny.......2005-07-10

"Rough as a Cob," by Ed Williams III, is a compilation of ten hilarious stories about growing up in the rural South of Juliette, Georgia.
The book encompasses the lives of Ed Sr., Ed Jr., and the brotherhood, whose antics are so crazy that it's impossible to keep a straight face.
I particularly enjoyed the stories, 'Snake in the Cobs,' and 'Ed Sr.,' where Frank and Ed Sr. devise a plan to beat the crap out of Santa Claus. Overall the whole book was hysterically funny, unpredictable, and well thought out.
I must admit this is the first time a book has ever made me belly roar with laughter. In fact at one point the tears were streaming down my face so badly, that I couldn't even see the words.
The characters are likable, well developed, and believable. The author portrayed his family and friend's situations so wonderfully, that he really gave his reader a glimpse into the actual scenarios, as if going back in time. Ed Williams has an uncanny way of drawing his reader into the story - meticulously, and with flair - making this book a real page-turner.
"Rough as a Cob" is a wonderful example of family life and the human condition. It is a truly incredible book, and I highly recommend it.
I hope that if Ed is ever in Canada to visit BTO, that he'll personally sign my books.

5 out of 5 stars Book of the year nomination!.......2005-02-24

In Rough As A Cob, Ed Williams' second collection of essays, I found myself laughing out loud. I was intrigued from the beginning chapter of "On Being Southern" to Chapter 10 "Meeting BTO."

I especially enjoyed the stories of Ed's family and I loved hearing about what Ed Jr. and Ed Sr. had to say. The down home stories brought me endless smiles, particularly Chapter 3 "Snake in the Cobs." Ed's love for and admiration of his family is apparent through his stories. I have to say I was amazed at how well written this story was written. Also the stories and characters were true to life and the images made me feel like I was right there - in the story, witnessing every experience, first-hand. I have to admit feeling pity for Charlie Pounds when Ed Sr. tells him "Charlie, you are too damn ugly." But in essence it is this type of pure honesty that is missing from today's society. I realized we need people like Ed Sr., who tell it like it is, with no fabrications. I laughed endlessly at Ed Sr. and Frank attempting and succeeding at beating up on Santa for being a greedy bastard. I felt the loss when Ed Sr.'s friend, Wig passed away. That's how real this story is.

If you only read one book this year - read Rough As A Cob, you won't be let down.
