Not Just a Kids Book!.......2000-08-16
It only gets four stars because it's not a comprehensive book, but a short little booklet (48 pages, with an index and a glossary). It's published by Barron's, who publish all those great, educational "made simple" type books on various subjects.
I've been through most of the books on markers that are out there. This book is the second best I've seen, I think. The very best is "Markers Wet and Wild," also available through Amazon. (Also, see the reviews already posted for the book "Rendering with Markers," They're accurate.) Anyway, this book has a lot for its short 48 pages. It's a good basic primer, and is a good resource if you're just starting to work with markers. It is also an excellent childrens book (see grade levels above).
It covers basic technique, nibs, mixing colors, types of papers good for marker drawing, how to use markers (bullet-tip, chisel point, etc), how to achieve effects (conveying motion and light, etc), then ends with exercises by drawing animals, scenery, rockets, applying markers in layers to achieve good results.
This has a nice low price and is totally worth it.

My daughter wants all the books now!.......2007-07-08
My daughter is 9 and has Asperger's syndrome, or high functioning autism. She collects feathers, and the weather is one of her IMPORTANT subjects. She reads fast, and finished this book quickly.... and informed me that she needs to read the rest of them so could I please help her get them right away? The story itself is a little intense because the goblin is actually trying to hit Storm and girls with lightning, but of course it all comes out okay in the end. We will definitely read the other books in the series!
Got My Daughter Interested in Reading Again.......2007-05-07
We've been struggling for a way to get my daughter to read now that she's run out of Junie B. Jones books. The Weather Fairies books have done the trick. She seems to enjoy reading again for the first time in half a year or more.
I have to say I haven't read any of the Weather Fairies myself but I caught my twelve-year-old son reading the series because his sister had obviously liked it. He said he wanted to read more, too.
We love the Rainbow Magic series.......2007-02-06
My soon-to-be 5 year old daughter and I LOVE this series. The stories are simple enough and short enough (about 40 min) to hold her attention as a read aloud, and there are enough illustrations peppered throughout to give her something to look at as I read. Both the stories and the illustrations are delightful. These books have ignited a passion for reading in my daughter, and she is now extremely motivated to read on her own so she doesn't have to wait for me to read them to her. We can hardly wait for the rest of the series to be published in the US. There are also the Jewel Fairies, the Pet Fairies, and the Party Fun Fairies that are only available in the UK right now, but it looks like some of them will be published here this summer. You can be sure we will be pre-ordering them!
We love it!!.......2006-12-23
My seven-year old daughter Clare has read 12 books by Daisy Meadows and we've ordered several more. She especially liked Crystal the Snow Fairy. It has great pictures. Some of her other favorites include: Pearl the Cloud Fairy and Heather the Violet Fairy. What a great series!
Doodle's magic feathers lost!.......2006-10-13
I love this book! I would recommend this book for ages 5 and up. In this book Jack Frost's evil goblins stole Doodle's, the rooster who gives the weather faries their weather feathers so they can control the weather in FairyLand, tail feathers which are the weather feathers! Kirsty and Rachel are best friends, who are friends with the fairies so they can help! Their first mission is in this book when they have to find Crystal the snow fairies weather feather. Read this book to find out more!

A classic example of meticulous effort; a beautiful collection .......2007-08-27
Snow Crystals by Bentley represents the exhilarating beauty and complexity of snowflakes in photographs taken with painstaking effort and enterprise. The book has a very useful introduction, though most of it is devoted to the diverse patterns exhibited by snowflakes. The quest to understand why snowflakes have their delightful shape and symmetry has intrigued the scientists, poets and philosophers for centuries. For example, in sixteenth century, Kepler's essay (On six-cornered snowflake) presents a very illuminating (and perhaps first scientific) account of his thought process on the physics of why snowflake is formed. He discussed several key ideas relevant to packing problems, and on their shapes, and the book by Bentley surely dazzles in being able to present a diverse range of possibilities realized by nature. Highly recommended to science enthusiasts, artists, photographers and atmospheric physicists.
"Snow Crystals" is a blizzard of beauty.......2005-07-21
In case you are trying to decide between "Snowflakes in Photographs" and "Snow Crystals", both by Bentley and published by Dover, this book is the better deal. Ironically, you get twice as many snowflake photos in "Snow Crystals" than in "Snowflakes in Photographs". Both beautiful books feature stunning black and white photographs of snowflakes but this book definitely has better 'text' support. I bought the two books at the same time thinking that this one focused more on Bentley and the other one focused more on the pictures, but it was a mistake. This is a case of "you get what you pay for" and the only reason to buy "Snowflakes in Photographs" over this one is that it is a bit cheaper. Buy "Snow Crystals", it is a blizzard of beauty with gorgeous photographs of snowflakes, nature's fragile crystalline miracles.
Sheer art.......2004-02-13
This book is a collection of some of W. A. Bentley's finest snowflake photographs. At the beginning of the book is a 20-page introduction to the photography and science of snowflakes (as of 1930). The photographic advice is more of value today as historical documentation about how the pictures were taken- -we no longer use photographic plates or develop and fix our own negatives. The scientific section consists mostly of descriptive and classificatory commentary, with relatively little in the way of explanation as to why the snowflakes take on the shapes that they do. Some of the commentary cites specific plates as examples. The real value of the book is in the plates themselves- -two hundred pages of high-quality black and white photographs, depicting over two thousand differently shaped snowflakes. A reader could spend many hours poring over the magical snowflakes. In looking through the plates, it becomes clear quite quickly that Bentley was a man of genius and dedication.
Sacred Geometry.......2002-08-24
I love this book because it gives me a unique feeling of spiritual unity each time I open it. It may be that you will appreciate it for different reasons, but for me, it is a graphic reminder that there is a creative and benign intelligence moving the Universe. Originally published in 1931 this unique book contains 202 black and white plates of snow flakes mounted and photographed with painstaking effort under difficult circumstances by W.A. Bentley aka Snowflake Bentley. Maybe you won't want to sit down and look at each and every one because, of course, they are nearly all the same even though each one is unique, but that's another reason I like the book. It demonstrates so simply and eloquently the unity in diversity.
The photographs are very beautiful and they will be interesting to anyone who is fascinated with weather or with graphics in art, perhaps for textile patterns or silk-screen ideas. The images are copyright free and you can use up to ten of them without fees, permission, or acknowledgement.
There is a very small amount of text at the beginning of this book that tells about the different kinds of snow crystals and a little bit about how the work to capture them on film was done. There is one nice photograph of Bentley at his camera which is charming, but for the most part, this book is dedicated to the snow crystals themselves. Anyone who has stood outside on a cold, crisp snowy day and caught snow crsytals on an upturned mitten and marveled at their exquisite beauty will enjoy this book. The crystals speak volumes and we have Mr. Bentley to thank for cummunicating their message to us.
A beautiful collection of photographs.......2001-01-05
W.A. Bentley spent fifty years painstakingly recording snowflakes, frost, rime, sleet and ice in all its forms. Even before "Snow Crystals" was published in 1931, his work was well known, and so popular that eventually a donor provided the (apparently large) amount of money needed to assemble this beautiful collection.
There is a small amount of text at the front of the book, which is moderately interesting. It contains a description of how to take these pictures for yourself, if you'd like to; and a classification of the kinds of snowflake and other ice forms depicted here. The bulk of the book, however, is made up of well over two thousand black and white photographs, the vast majority of them of single snowflakes. You can get an idea of what they look like by clicking on Amazon's image of the cover picture, above; in the book, the images are white on black. You may also want to visit snowflakebentley.com, which contains more examples, and more information about Bentley himself (there is almost none in this book). In most or all cases, Bentley went to the trouble of making a duplicate negative of each snowflake and then cutting out, by hand, the finely detailed image, so that the background to the picture would be pure black.
The results are spectacular. The snowflakes are ethereally beautiful, and the variety is just stunning. However, in case it's not clear from what I've said so far, this is a contemplative book. It's not a book to read: it's a book to browse through, put away, and get out again another snowy day. Children will like it, but just to glance at, not to go through steadily.
Recommended.

A Close Look at Snow and Snowflakes.......2003-07-30
While working on avalanche research in the 1950's, Edward Chapelle discovered that the variation in snow crystal forms influences the occurrence of avalanches. This discovery led him to write this "Field Guide to Snow Crystals" to explain the basics of snow crystal identification and metamorphism to interested laypersons. In this case, "snow crystal" includes what is commonly called a "snowflake". So if you are interested in understanding snowflakes, this book is for you. The field guide has three parts. The first section addresses the identification of snow crystals. There are charts which allow the reader to identify any snow crystal (or snowflake) that he finds. And there is an explanation of how and why snow crystals form. The second part of the book explains how to photograph a snow crystal, which might be of interest to photographers specializing in close-up work as well as snowflake enthusiasts. The third and final section of the book contains 50 photographs of snow crystals, which illustrate discussions of what happens to snow as it falls and as it sits on the ground under various conditions. The metamorphism which causes snow crystals to alter their form as they lie on or under the surface of snow is both pictured and described in detail. The differences between snow, hoar, and rime are also pictured and described so that the reader can easily differentiate between them. I have only a casual interest in snowflakes, and I enjoyed this book. It made me think about the variety of forms I have seen snow take, and now I understand what I was looking at. My only criticism of this "Field Guide to Snow Crystals" is that it lacks a glossary of terms. New terms are explained as they arise, but a glossary in the back of the book would have been a helpful quick reference. I would recommend the "Field Guide to Snow Crystals" to skiers, mountain climbers, snow rangers, and anyone who has an interest in better understanding snow or snowflakes. The book is 6x8 inches in size and 101 pages long.

This is a AIR FORCE INST OF TECH WRIGHT-PATTERSONAFB OH report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A727873. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: Foodborne disease causes an estimated 4 to 76 million cases of food poisoning with 5,000 associated deaths annually in the United States at a cost of $6.5 - 34.9 billion. In poultry products, Salmonella is the most common pathogenic bacterial contaminant, and is responsible for the highest percentage of foodborne disease transmission. Currently, microbial detection performed by the food industry is inadequate; tainted food products routinely are sold and consumed before contamination is revealed. A rapid, sensitive (350 +/- 150 cells ml/cm) quartz crystal microbalance biosensor, layered with heat-treated anti- Salmonella-phospholipid monolayers by the Langmuir-Blodgett technique, has been evaluated by immersion testing in chicken exudate to determine the feasibility of inclusion into processed poultry packaging. Biosensor degradation and bacterial interaction were examined under darkfield microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Results indicate that the biosensor is specific (r >/- 0. 98), and sensitive (>/- 10 mV decade/cm) for up to 32-40 hours post-immersion at 4 deg C with an assay time of less than 7 minutes. The working longevity of the biosensor was not increased through filter-sterilization of chicken exudate. Heat-treated antibodies (56 deg C for 30 minutes) were required to prepare a properly functioning sensor. Observations of bacterial interaction with the monolayer by scanning electron microscopy and darkfield microscopy agreed well with the functional duration of the biosensor.

Book Description
The molecular mechanisms underlying the fact that a crystal can take a variety of external forms is something we have come to understand only in the last few decades. This is due to recent developments in theoretical and experimental investigations of crystal growth mechanisms. Morphology of Crystals is divided into three separately available volumes. Part A contains chapters on roughening transition; equilibrium form; step pattern theory; modern PBC; and surface microtopography. This part provides essentially theoretical treatments of the problem, particularly the solid-liquid interface. Part B contains chapters on ultra-fine particles; minerals; transition from polyhedral to dendrite; theory of dendrite; and snow crystals. All chapters are written by world leaders in their respective areas, and some can be seen as representing the essence of a life's work. This is the first English-language work which covers all aspects of the morphology of crystals - a topic which has attracted top scientific minds for centuries. As such, it is indispensable for anyone seeking an answer to a question relating to this fascinating problem: mineralogists, petrologists, crystallographers, materials scientists, workers in solid-state physics and chemistry, etc. In Parts A: Fundamentals and B: Fine Particles, Minerals and Snow equilibrium and kinetic properties of crystals are generally approached from an `atomistic' point of view. In contrast, Part C: The Geometry of Crystal Growth follows the alternative and complementary `geometrical' description, where bulk phases are considered as continuous media and their interfaces as mathematical surfaces with orientation-dependent properties. Equations of motion for a crystal surface are expressed in terms of vector and tensor operators working on surface free energy and growth rate, both expressed as functions of surface orientation and driving force, or `affinity' for growth. This approach emphasizes the interrelation between equilibrium and kinetic behavior. Part 1 establishes the theoretical framework. Part 2 gives a construction toolbox for explicit (analytic) functions. An extra chapter is devoted to experimental techniques for measuring such functions: a new approach to sphere growth experiments. The emphasis throughout is on principles and new concepts. Audience: Advanced readers familiar with traditional aspects of crystal growth theory. Can be used as the basis for an advanced course, provided supplementation is provided in the areas of atomistic models of the advancing surface, diffusion fields, etc.

OMIGOD!!!!!!.......2006-10-07
First of all, read Mr. Janson's review, since everything he said is right on the mark!! I can honestly say that this is the coolest pin-up book I own. Cartegena is a classic Vargas sorta airbrush artist who creates very clean, colorful and bouncy vixens, and Sean does small scale color pencil and charcoal drawings of body builder types. I liked Cartegena's best, since his are more sensual while Sean's are alot rougher and more explicit renderings of women (the women actually have goosebumbs on their nipples!!). definetely a good buy if you like pin-ups.
A PAIR OF PIN-UP GIANTS.......2006-01-20
"Flirt" the art of Naughty Volume 1 is a double-sided, oversized book collecting the works of Carlos Cartegena one side and Sean Gallimore on the other. The Guatemalan born Cartegena came to the U.S. in 1981 and his work has been featured in magazines such as Playboy, Penthouse, and Femme Fatale. Cartagena is rightly considered as one of the top glamour/pin-up artists working today and in the same class as Olivia and Soroyama. His work is in the finest tradition of glamour pioneers Gil Elvgren, Rolf Armstrong and Mel Ramos.
Page 7 features one of my favorite Cartegena paintings "Alley in Silk" as the beautiful model lies in a bed of silk, pink sheets doing her best 1950's Marilyn Monroe pose. "School Girl" is a charming, sassy painting of a pig-tailed Catholic school girl bending over to get a drink of water in her little mini-skirt. "Red Silk is another favorite that shows a brunette in red bra, garter, and fishnet stockings looking like she was just caught by surprise.
The last several pieces in the book are certainly Ramos/Elvgren inspired 50's pin-up style pieces with women in polka-dot bikinis. This book shows why Cartagena is considered one of the top pin-up artists.
Now flip the book over and check out Sean Gallimore. Gallimore actually got his start working at animation studios such as Hanna Barbera and the Bluth Studios but then decided to dedicate himself completely to his art. That decision was great news for fans of pin-up art. Gallimore has a glamorous yet textured style giving his work a truly unique look.
On page 4 we get Gallimore's take on super heroes as he shows a topless Supergirl getting into her costume in one of his most famous pieces. The piece entitled "Busty Oily" is well named as it shows a buxom brunette, cupping her well-oiled breasts. Gallimore shows off the female anatomy and muscle structure as well as any artists I have ever seen, demonstrated on Pages 22 - 25 showing off a variety of Gallimore's well muscled, nude warrior women.
Flirt: The Art of Naughty is collecting the works of these two men for the first time and pin-up fans will love the two distinctive styles of art.
