Second Chances -- Twice as Sweet.......2006-11-27

In one her best novels, Mavis Applewater brings us the extremely likable Uber characters of Jamie Jameson (Gabrielle) and Cecilia Callaway (Xena). In the first part of the novel, Jamie is a college student with a holy roller roommate. One day when borrowing her roommate's car, she gets a speeding ticket from rookie cop Callaway. Later that same evening, the women come face to face in a local nightclub. Due to an irresistible attraction, the women begin seeing each other. After a slow romance and eventually succumbing to that attraction, CC seemingly disappears the morning after.

Twelve years later, Dr. Jamie Jameson faces Police Detective CC Callaway after treating a suspect. The women feel both animosity and that same undeniable attraction toward each other. Can they overcome their past to realize the potential of their future?

The story isn't terribly deep, but the characters' Uber status gives the reader a deeper insight into their personalities. I truly enjoyed this story and would recommend it for a light, rainy weekend read.

Bumpy but happy reunion.......2006-09-06

College lovers Caitlin Calloway and Jamie Jameson's relationship ended one day after a passionate lover making session.

12 years later Dr. Jameson meets Detective Calloway at the hospital she's working. Jamie hates CC for running out on her 12 years ago. CC wants to get back together again.

But a folly of misunderstandings and interruptions keep them from sealing the deal. There's a serial killer on the loose and he's killing women who look like Jamie.

There's lots or romance and mystery. At one point when I was reading, I wanted to say "Ladies chill so we can catch the killer".

The Brass Ring is a wonderful book full of love, lust, broken hearts all around, murder, and crazy people! Not to mention the hot sex! This book has laugh out loud humor and a love that will touch your heart. You will fall in love with the amazing women in this book. From beautiful tough cop Caitlin Calloway, spitfire Dr. Jamie Jameson, kid sister Stevie, and little baby Emma. The heartbreak and misunderstandings in this book make the reader root for these two lovers. Plus this book offers a good murder plot that may or may not be solved. Will the killer be brought to justice or will the cops be able to connect the dots enough for a strong case? The Brass Ring is a very easy, enjoyable read. I thought this was a great book. I look forward to reading more from this amazingly talented writer.

Terrific novel of love, drama, romance and laugh out loud humor.......2005-10-02

A wonderful novel. At 300 plus pages this is more than a romance. It's a drama that stretches over many years. The characters are well defined and believable. You are also laughing out loud by page six, the humor is wonderful. The romance is a delight. The gripping murder mystery was quite a surprise to find in a romance, but with one of the characters a police detective I should have expected it. This novel is a keeper to read again.

At a time when we all need a little escapism Mavis entertains and enthralls us with this wonderfully entertaining read. You WILL fall in love with this story and it's wonderfully funny and romantic characters. Please reach for this Brass Ring before it's too late.

As a devoted Diane Chamberlain fan, I have read every one of her novels. This one was particulary intense and compelling. Diane deals realistically with the fallout from sexual abuse and survivor guilt. Sisters Claire and Vanessa share sharply different memories of summers spent with their grandfather, who was in the process of restoring an antique carousel. Claire has nothing but happy memories of lazy summer days spent with her beloved grandfather. Vanessa, after overcoming drug and alcohol addiction has become an activist for molested children. Claire does not understand why her sister Vanessa will have nothing to do with her.

Claire is witness to a suicide that triggers flashbacks that she doesn't understand. With the help of the victim's brother, she uncovers the terrible truth about her grandfather and her perceived role in her sister's trauma.

Claire's struggle to come to grips with her memories, her guilt, and her attempts to make amends with her sister will touch the hearts of anyone who hold themselves responsible for causing unspeakable pain to someone they truly love.

Brass Ring is the story of what you can do when "you're big". It has large simple yet sweet pictures that hold my 2 year old daughter entranced. It evokes such strong memories of summer and the beach, I can practically feel the sand in my toes and smell the sea air. The little girl in the story shares with the reader what she likes to do on her vacation, and this leads us on a mini vacation that goes from picking sea stars and snails to the grandest Carousel, where she waits to ride her favorite horse Thunder. Will she catch the Brass Ring while on Thunder and win another ride? You'll have to read for yourself, happy reading!

The beauty of the american carousel seems to radiate from the pages of this book. There are some fantastic photographs of carousel animals and machines that are still around, she also has photos of various carousels that have been lost or destroyed over the years. Astonishing late effort by Welles.......2005-06-02

One of the best, most bizarre screenplays I've ever read -- full of insights on politics and the human condition, rendered in an entertaining form (though I don't see how this could have ever been the mass audience success Welles envisioned). My question is, how could Welles in the early 1980s have possibly depicted John Kerry so ... well, so 'well'?

The afterward by Jonathan Rosenbaum is also full of touching, poignant details about the writing of the script. Please Jonathan, write a whole book!

What a great pity Jack Nicholson turned the film down for not offering him enough money ($2 mill plus 10% of profits!). Can you imagine how great Nicholson and Welles would have been together?

The edition I received for $3 used was in perfect condition -- alas, completely untouched.

Previous reviews have been written before third edition. I have third edition and I recognize that it still contains lots of mistakes (especially figures). The manner of writing is not briliant. Some chapters, like about inputs/outputs, are a little less informative. The book has many pages, but it looks a little airy.

Too many errors and no errata.......2002-02-22

The book is decent - better than a few I have purchased but suffers from a common failing in technical books - it is repleat with errors. Really, a book which is used by some in technical schools or colleges should have only a few errors at most. This book has scores of errors, which makes learning very difficult. Like most subjects if you intend to teach yourself, you will need three or four references including PLC manuals in order to resolve the many ambiguous diagrams and statements in the text...

Great teaching material.......2001-08-28

I teach electricians about PLCs and use this book as the class textbook. It has very good coverage of the subject. There are other books that are less costly and cover the same basic material (but not in the same depth that this book does).

Excellent PLC Book.......2000-04-17

Stenerson's book is an exellent introduction to the subject of Programmable Logic Controllers. He uses several of the major brands in his discussion of automation. The book is not designed to make one fluent with one particular PLC, but rather to give one basic knowledge which is applicable to all brands of PLCs.

I teach PLCs at a technical college and have been using Stenerson's book for the last couple years - what a great text. Although its somewhat expensive, I feel that it is a great value.

there is nothing out there quite like the jim journals. i absolutely love reading them, and they do something to my brain that nothing else i've read quite does. it's like entering someone else's life... it's almost a comic based haiku.

many of his comic strips aren't funny in the least. they're about every day activities - or even lack of activity. the most active people in the strip are his friends, as jim himself seems to do or think very little. which, to me, is the genius. i feel myself stepping into his life like into a pair of old comfortable tennis shoes.

walking a mile with jim is always a pleasure.
