The book was shorter and smaller than what I expected. After visiting Hearst Castle last year and hearing about this architect, I wanted to learn more. I think that there are better books out there.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Book Report Book.......2005-12-13

Wow. I wanted to do a good book for my book report. This book was just the right one. It's about the life of Julia Morgan and what she was like. Now, if you don't like biographies, I don't either. This book waas really good though. I recommend this to anyone that hates biographies. The other reason I think I liked it is that my name is similar to hers! This book is all about the true Julia Morgan.

5 out of 5 stars An impressive woman, a bittersweet life.......2003-08-27

I've been somewhat familiar with Julia Morgan's architecture for many years, so it was interesting to read about her life. This is a nice quick read for an adult, but would really be wonderful as a gift to that niece or nephew who aspires to be an architect. The book does a good job of demonstrating how important Miss Morgan's determination and leadership skills were to her success, in addition to her obvious artistic giftedness.

As a Berkeley grad I was disappointed to learn that one of my heros, John Galen Howard, who was chief campus architect in the early 20th century (and designer of the Campanile, among many other of the granite buildings), acted in such a petty way towards Miss Morgan, blocking any campus building contracts from going to her because she had the audacity to leave his office to go solo. On the other hand, Bernard Maybeck sounds as though he was as delightful as the Berkeley brown shingles he designed.

A touching aspect of the book is how it illustrates Miss Morgan's kindness to everyone she came in contact with. She designed a playhouse for the children of the man who chauferred her to and from the Hearst Castle site. When her own mother was getting old and fearful she built an exact replica in San Francisco of the bedroom her mother had lived in for many years in Oakland.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding.......1999-01-27

I read this book when it first came out to review for our library collection. It has always been one of the books that has stood out in my mind as an unforgettable. It is terrific not just for the youth but also adults. It is an exemplary biography for an exemplary woman. Julia Morgan was one of our countries first women architects. It is an excellent biography for girls and the general public. An excellent comprehensive read of one of our countries finest architects. I highly recommend it for someone looking for an oustanding, informative, inspiring fun read for our youth.

Book Description

From the time she was little, Julia Morgan wanted to know how everything fit together. Her family often visited San Francisco, where she could puzzle over the many new buildings under construction there. Julia desperately wanted to be an architect—but in the late nineteenth century that was rare for a woman.

Julia was not deterred. After several rejections, she finally made it into the prestigious all-male École des Beaux Arts, in Paris. She also became California's first licensed female architect and designed over 800 buildings, including newspaper mogul William Randolph Hearst's magnificent San Simeon. With exquisite illustrations, this is the story of a spirited pioneer.

5 out of 5 stars At a time when most girls aspired only to marry and keep house..........2007-02-04

At a time when most girls aspired only to marry and keep house, Julia Morgan dreamed of building a house - but in the late 19th century women just didn't become architects. She fought for her desires anyway, becoming the first woman to study architecture in Paris and becoming California's first licensed women architect. Julia Morgan Built a Castle holds gorgeous drawings by Miles Hyman and presents a lovely story of a young girl's dreams - it reads like fiction with high drama but is biography at its best.

5 out of 5 stars Second Grade Favorite!.......2007-01-02

Our second grade class loved this book. Much to my surprise, boys and girls alike were as captivated by the architectural details peppered throughout, as they were by Morgan's inspiring story. Never underestimate the mind of a child! As for me, I love the way the building of San Simeon (and the career that led to this commission) serves as a metaphor for proactively building one's dreams. A powerful message for our children, and well delivered.

5 out of 5 stars Superb volume on Morgan.......2007-08-25

This is an outstanding book on Morgan's life and work. Well written text, detailed history, biographical information, and quality photos of the many buildings are just of few of the book's strong points. Morgan designed hundreds of buildings during her over 50-year career, and the author deserves credit for covering so many of them. Of course, she is most famous for the projects she did for Hearst, such as the "Castle" and Wyntoon, the Austrian/Bavarian style estate near Mt. Shasta in northern California, but she created many other important buildings also, which get discussed in detail in this fine volume. Also included are scans of the original plans. Out of all the books on Morgan, this one is by far the best, and well worth your time and money.

A little side note here, I've done five different tours of the Hearst Castle over the years, so have had an opportunity personally to view one of her most important works. During one of the tours, the guide said that a few years ago they had a 6.4 magnitude earthquake there, but except for a few tiles that came off here and there, the castle sustained no damage. That's because despite the delicate looking surface ornamentation, underneath the building is steel reinforced concrete, with even thicker walls than necessary. As a result, the entire Hearst Castle sustained almost no damage during the quake, and no structural damage, and the only really dramatic thing that happened was the guide said that the quake shook things violently enough so that a lot of water sloshed out of the big Neptune pool. :-)

One of the guides said some interesting things about Hearst's wealth. By the standards of the time, he was certainly very wealthy, earning $50,000 a day back in the early 30s. But compared to the most wealthy people of the day, such as Rockefeller, who made one million dollars a day, this was relatively modest. Hearst was the 42nd wealthiest man in the U.S. at the time, his father, George Hearst, being 32nd, if I remember right. He spent 9 million dollars on the Castle, approximately one half a year's earnings, so percentage-wise, it was not that much money for him. But compared to the super-wealthy of the day, such as the Morgans, Rockefellers, Vanderbilts, etc, apparently it wasn't much. :-)

Back in the financial panic of 1905, J.P. Morgan, one of the wealthiest men of his time, lent the U.S. government 20 million dollars of his own money, back when that was a lot more, so it could temporarily keep operating. When Morgan died, Rockefeller commented, "He accomplished a lot for a man who wasn't that wealthy."

Anyway, just a few perhaps irrelevant comments on some of the history of the wealthiest individuals of the time. :-)

Comprehensive with great photographs, this is a good place to start learning about Morgan's career.

5 out of 5 stars The true Julia Morgan becomes known.......2000-10-16

I have always been interested in Julia Morgan's work but I have never been able to find enough solid and valuable information about her and her work. I own all of the Julia Morgan books, that is every book written about Julia Morgan. This, by far, is the best composition of the true character of Julia Morgan. Not only do you get an entire biography with incredible detail but you also get insight from hundreds of pictures, scans of actual plans Julia Morgan drafted and entires from other important persons. This book is a must have if you are looking for "the" book covering everything in Julia Morgan's life. This book stands alone among all the other Julia Morgan reads. I suggest that if you are looking for a book about Ms. Morgan, this is the best book, brings the greatest attention to detail that you will ever find about Julia Morgan.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Review Of A Forgotten Master.......2000-06-14

A wonderful survey of a truly great Architect. Great photos. Original drawings. A detailed career history & biography. Most of the better known masters haven't gotten this kind of treatment; Ms. Morgan deserves it. GREAT book.

5 out of 5 stars Julia Morgan, Architect.......2000-03-30

Beautiful book! Author does a lovely, sensitive job profiling Morgan, and her career as the first licensed female architect in the US. I also really enjoyed the socio-cultural, and artistic context of the early 20th Century. The extensive photographs are a wonderful addition - imperative in a book dealing with a visual art. One of the very richest architectual books I've seen in a long time, and a great addition to anyone's collection.

4 out of 5 stars Must Reading for Asilomar Visitors .......2007-06-02

Russell Quacchia, long-time Bay Area architect and active member of the American Society for Aesthetics, has produced a remarkable book on Julia Morgan's Asilomar campus. The previous Amazon reviewer must not have actually read the book as it contains orginal research (for example from Special Collections at the Kennedy Library at Cal Poly) as well as excellent background information on Morgan's life, the Arts and Crafts Movement in California, the histories of Pacific Grove and Asilomar, and a comparison between Asilomar and Morgan's other major work, the Hearst Castle at San Simeon. The last two chapters go into issues of aesthetics, making us aware of the ways in which Morgan anticipated our contemporary interest in site-specificity. Her architectural work at Asilomar is noteworthy for its emphasis on natural materials. Her architectural style was eclectic, but often, as at Asilomar, she followed the Arts and Crafts style of her mentor, Bernard Maybeck. Quacchia is especially insightful in his comment that Morgan sought a flexible balance between rigorous symmetry in building facades and casual asymmetry in the pathways she laid out between buildings. Each of her buildings, as Quacchia observes, was built to have its own feeling, to express a personality. As Quacchia writes, "In arranging buildings at Asilomar, Julia Morgan actively looked after the logistical needs as well as the social and environmental implications" of her work. The book is also well-illustrated with historical photographs. The bibliography is fine, but at eight pages, could hardly be said to form the bulk of the book, contrary again to the previous reviewer.

1 out of 5 stars Please, Don't Waste your Time and Money.......2006-05-16

I was looking forward to reading a this book but was quickly disappointed.

I don't think Mr. Quacchia took much time to put together this book. The information is ALL second and third hand. The entire book is other writers accounts and information. The book is mostly a bibliography. Mr. Quacchia put a few narratives between each bit of information but he or his editors might want to use spell and grammar check next time. A college writing course might also be helpful.

I guess anyone can write a book if they do alittle research.

My copy of the book was not put together very well. Many of the pages were either omitted or put in after the index.

Please, think twice about reading this trash. That is where my book is now.

4 out of 5 stars Horse Handling and grooming.......2007-06-22

I needed a book for students getting to know horses for the first time.
This book provided the information they needed in quick and easy slices.
This laid the ground work for more intensive sessions which they will receive later on in their veterinary and general animal care courses.
I am very pleased with this book.

            3 out of 5 stars Limited........2007-03-03

This book is good for folks who have a basic knowledge of horses but want a little further advice. People who haven't had lessons or are just starting to work with horses for the most part will get confused easily. I got this book for a friend and while there is plenty of useful information tha main things we were looking for were hoof care. The most useful information I found was the section on tying the horse and approaching the horse. This book is helpful but definately not a complete source. We actually got Horses for Dummies and THAT book had ALOT of helpful information... including information on what you should consider BEFORE you become a horse owner.

3 out of 5 stars Hard to find a good grooming book.......2004-09-15

I bought this book because I thought it would be just as good as another in this series "Getting the most from Riding Lessons". I was really looking for specifics on grooming with highly detailed photos and step by step highly detailed instructions and tips. This book has some of this.

There's a good section on catching, tying, and handling the horse. There is some basic safety information omitted.
The hoof care is completely lacking. There is only information on how to lift and support your horses feet. This should be a VERY detailed section of the book considering how important it is to a horse.
Daily grooming info is only OK.
Washing section is acceptable to good.
Clipping section is good but doesnt cover special clipping patterns.
Mane and tail care and braiding is good.
No leg wrap information is included.
No transport of horse information is included.

This all said - it's really hard to find a great grooming book.

            5 out of 5 stars Beginner-Great Picture Guide.......2004-02-24

This book matches exactly what the title says it is providing the beginner with the basics of handling and grooming on a horse that is use to both (in my mind set it pretains to a very gentle well trained horse that is use to a lot of handling, like someone else stated a sound horse).
The pictures and text appear to be complete on how to do things right and it's my kind of book, no long winded, wasted or unneeded words to make a bigger book thus wasting my time or book shelf space.
It does just cover the basics on how to do it (not with a horse that is unruley) and on handling you will quickly out-grow the book. It does contain more information on grooming than it does handling so if you are new at that it should be very helpful.

1 out of 5 stars Waste of Money.......2003-11-08

I condsider myself a beginner. This book is very simplistic.
I learned most of these things in the first month of taking lessons. If you have a minimal amount of knowledge, this book would be a waste. Don't waste your time or money. I wish I hadn't.

            5 out of 5 stars Very Entertaining........2005-09-21

For those who have seen the anime Stellvia, Volume 1 covers the same story up through the Astroball competition. However there are some minor deviations in the story that make the manga version a more humorous story. Some of the best moments from this volume are Shima's flight teacher losing a bet with another teacher and having to cosplay in a school uniform. We discover the real reason for Shima's sudden piloting brillance during the trial to pick a 5th team member for the Astroball team. Who knew someone could actually get drunk off one of those liquor chocolates.

If you enjoyed the anime, you'll love the manga. If you never saw the anime, its still a good adventure and a funny read.

            5 out of 5 stars 3-Ply Is a Great Buy!.......2004-01-29

Ever since I read Uncle John's Ahh-Inspiring Bathroom Reader, I became hooked on the entire series. I literally went nuts snatching up as many of these Bathroom Readers as I could, and I couldn't resist the 3-Ply Boxed Set from Amazon.com for such a low price; I really saved a bundle! Included in the Boxed Set are the 8th, 11th, and 12th books in the series: Uncle John's Ultimate Bathroom Reader, Uncle John's Great Big Bathroom Reader, and Uncle John's Absolutely Absorbing Bathroom Reader respectively.

I think it is safe to say that I am set with bathroom reading material for the next decade, but that's a good thing because I plan on visiting my throne room quite a bit over the next 10 years! Chances are you will visit your throne room quite a bit over the next decade too. So, take my advice, order the Uncle John's 3-Ply Bathroom Reader Boxed Set and bask in the wonderfully witty short stories, jokes, trivia, wordplay, and much more! Once you are finished with the Boxed Set, order more books from the series! I did!
