Book Description
During its darkest hour Switzerland was surrounded by aggressive fascist armies, with no allies within reach, its politicians quavering, and its people beginning to lose hope of retaining their freedom. General Henri Guisan stepped into this miasma of growing despair. In July 1940, he assembled the entire Swiss officer corps at the Rutli Meadow, the spot where pike-wielding herdsmen had formed the Swiss Confederation in 1291. Invoking the spirit of their medieval forebears, he informed his officers that Switzerland would fight back against any invader, and if they ran out of ammunition they would use the bayonet. Switzerland, he declared, would never surrender. Guisan lit a torch that would guide the Continent's only remaining democracy until the end of the war. The key to his military strategy was shifting the main strength of the Swiss Army to the Alps. This controversial policy conceded population centers but it also negated German superiority in armor and aircraft. If the Nazis invaded they would only open a bleeding sore that they would not be able to close. Though the Wehrmacht drew up numerous invasion plans, it never took the gamble. As a military man who became the spiritual leader of his country, Guisan was a rarity in the history of democratic nations. His guidance, along with the Swiss system of universal male conscription, meant that the Germans, had they invaded, would have been fighting not just an army but a people. This definitive biography of General Guisan not only describes a man of great complexity and courage, but a fascinating aspect of World War II.
WILLI GAUTSCHI is the author of numerous works, including "The National Strike of 1918" and "Lenin as an Emigrant in Switzerland." Having retired from teaching history at the University of Zurich, he currently lives in Baden.
Book Description
In a riveting story of courage and hope, Peg Kehret tells of months spent in a hospital when she was twelve, first struggling to survive a severe case of polio, then slowly learning to walk again. Her powerful account is also full of the humor that she and four spunky roommates found in daily hospital life.
Customer Reviews:
This is a Great Book!.......2007-10-18
I loved this book! It is about a girl named Peg who is stricken with Polio. My fav. part was when her temperature dropped by drinking the chocolate milkshake. I would recommend this book for anyone!
A fast read........2007-10-10
This book was certainly good but it sounded as if a child was telling. It really didn't describe things very well and it jumped to fast. It was a good story but it wasn't set up totally right. I liked it though and I think you will too. I was required to read this in 6th grade and I read it ahead of the class because I couldn't put the book down because the story was interesting and...touching. I wish it would have explained what she did when she went to school and what her friend's reaction were. I usually don't read books like this and actually like it though.
Update on a Memoir.......2007-06-18
Peg Kehret has updated her memoir about the year she contracted polio and the aftermath. The body of the memoir has not changed but the epilogue has been updated. It has been 10 years since Small Steps was first published. She tells about her search for some of the inhabitants of the book and even asks readers to help her. Poignantly she tells of her husband's death and how her experiences with polio have helped with her grief. If you have not read this book, pick it up. If you have read it, read the updated epilogue. You will revisit old friends.
An Enlightening Book.......2007-04-12
I purchased this book for our home library. As I do with every book, I looked through it to check it over before handing it off to the kids. I began to read the first page. I couldn't put it down. A few chapters into the book, I was crying. A couple of hours later, I had finished the book.
This book made me so thankful for the immunizations we have to protect our children from disease. I grew up in a generation of children who did not have to worry about polio, but I recall seeing a friend of my mom's who limped because of polio. Though that did make an impression on me, it was not nearly as enlightening as reading what a sufferer of polio went through as a child. The fever, the pain, the loneliness, the fear!
It's an enlightening book for children as well as adults.
Why I like this book so much!.......2007-03-13
The first chapter gives you that feeling that you don't want to put the book down. My dad and I were reading before I went to bed and he said, "I'm reading the 13th chapter and I loved it already! I can't believe it." There is one boring chapter, but other wise that this book is the bomb! Yes I do say that word. Anway back to the book. It inspired me so much that I read it in 3-4 days. The way I found about this book was from B.O.B. Also know as Battle of the Books. I loved this book so much that I want to buy it! (that doesn't happen very often). I saw the word "Polio" in the title and I said "oh this looks good!" Hopefully you will feel the same way. Read it! It is ofcourse a true story! good Luck!
Product Description
A rich and moving memoir of childhood illness and its aftermath by a member of the last generation of Americans to have experienced childhood polio.
Just after her eleventh birthday, at the height of the frightening childhood polio epidemic, Susan Richards Shreve was sent as a patient to the sanitarium at Warm Springs, Georgia. It was a place famously founded by FDR, "a perfect setting in time and place and strangeness for a hospital of crippled children."
There the young Shreve met Joey Buckley, a thirteen-year-old in a wheelchair who desperately wants to play football for Alabama. The shock of first love and of separation from her fiercely protective mother propels Shreve on a careening course from Warm Springs bad girl to overachieving saint and back again. This indelible portrait of the psychic fallout of childhood illness ends -- like Tobias Wolff's Old School -- with a shocking collision between adolescent drive and genteel institution.
During Shreve's stay at Warm Springs, the Salk vaccine was developed, an event that put an end to a harrowing time for American families. Shreve's memoir is both a fascinating historical record of that time and an intensely felt story of childhood.

Memory Springs.......2007-07-21
This book was beautiful, honest and thoughtful. To remember what it was to be 11 or 16 or 25 and what was important to us then and to keep from judging our younger selves seems to be part of our job after middle age. After being parents ourselves we can be more forgiving to our own parents and having been children we can keep from judging our children. Susan Shreve takes her story and through her gaze helps me see what was important what is still important and how those things have changed. I will be thinking about this book for a long while.
Warm Memories.......2007-07-15
There is not a whole lot out there, as far as recollections of the most recent polio years in the US. Having had the disease in 1954 myself, I found this to be a friendly book. It's a great story of how polio people never quit. We, as a group regardless of our various disabilities, have had successfully full lives. And those of us who are dealing with Post Polio Syndrome just keep on keeping on, as does the author of this book.
Hats off to Susan Richards Shreve. Thanks for a good read.
Read for pleasure, but also had a life lesson .......2007-06-12
I had no interest in Polio, or FDR. I just read the book because it was recommended, and boy, I was glad that I did. I learned about the dreadful disease, the hardships of FDR, and the outlook of one amazing girl, Susan.
Just why do some have to suffer like she did? And why do those that have to undertake such an ordeal have such a positive attitude? I think about the book often, and share my new knowledge to anyone that will listen.
Enjoy.
Heartfelt.......2007-06-08
Yesterday, after listening to Susan Shreve speak on NPR's Talk of the Nation, I immediately ran out to get a copy of her new book, "Warm Springs: Traces of a Childhood at FDR's Polio Haven". A longtime "history buff" of FDR, and of particular interest in the history of Warm Springs, I hoped that Shreve's memoir would add to my knowledge of the camp through the eyes of her own experience. What I found was a deeping moving story of a girl, struggling with her condition, all the while learning about others, which in turn, she learns about herself.
Susan Shreve was diagnosed with polio at quite a young age. She is moved to Warm Springs at the tender age of 11, in which her hijinx ensues. What comes across in the book quite quickly that dear young Susan is quite an imp, impressionable, and very much a part of the scene. She engages in several adventures that had me laughing outloud, and some that were serious and reflective.
Shreve manages, in like so many memoirs, to recover a time and a place that has long since passed, but to do so in such eloquence that I found myself reading and rereading pages and paragraphs from their simple beauty of words.
To wit: "Muscle to muscle, trace to trace, I am looking for a sign of possibility. At Warm Springs, traces is the word for hope. When I think of the word "traces" now, it is as a footprint or a shadow or a verb, like "unearth" or "expose" or "reveal." I've been looking for traces in my childhood that will bring the years I spent in Warm Springs into some kind of focus. In its intention, the process is very much the same as it was when I lived there and turned my attention to discovering what remained."
The sheer elegance of her writing is precious, exact. It is reminscient of the cleverness of Michael Cunningham, or the beauty of Grief by Andrew Holleran. In a couple of months, perhaps in the midst of summer, I may revisit this book, and spend time again at Warm Springs, just to bask in the glow of her words.
This would be an excellent book for any reading group, a gift for a mother or sister, or someone facing a time of trial in their lives. Thanks to Susan Sherve for crafting such an excellent portrait of her times at Warm Springs!
beautifully written, funny memoir.......2007-06-06
I loved this book. It is engaging, warm, honest, and often very funny. The mischievous but well-meaning protagonist is so likeable as a child struggling to grow up and trying to be a good daughter and person, while often feeling like an outsider. You don't have to have had a childhood illness to find this character totally relatable and the book completely charming.

"Adelia emerges as a physically fragile young woman full of tremendous emotional strength, her 'never give up' attitude an inspiration to us all . This well-crafted memoir of Adelia and all the intriguing characters is worthy of anyone's time."
-
Susan Duke, author
On the first night Adelia was admitted to the hospital, the doctors delivered the tragic news to my parents that she would probably not live through the night. The doctors, however, had not taken into consideration the fight this little eight year old girl had in her heart and soul. She was stubborn, she was strong, and she wanted to live. Mom always thought that Adelia's determination to live came from her strong desire to see her baby sister. No one dreamed it would take years to fulfill this desire.
For the next thirteen months, Adelia lived in her iron lung with a paralysis that left her unable to move anything but one little finger and the ability to blink her eyes. Polio had stripped her of any form of mobility.

Book Description
A collection of 20 true stories set on a small family dairy farm in Wisconsin 40 years ago at a time when small family farms still dotted the countryside and summertime meant learning to drive the tractor, making ice cream, and riding a pony to the hayfield.
Customer Reviews:
Purchased it for a Christmas Gift.......2007-05-02
I purchased this book along with Christmas in Dairyland for my father for Christmas in 2005. He grew up on a dariy farm in the same "era" as LeAnn and thought he might enjoy the books. Well, he more then enjoyed them, he LOVED them. I have now gotten him all of her following books as gifts as well. He especially likes the stories that are actually about agriculture and farming. I have also read all the books and they are most enjoyable.
My Dad liked Laura Ingalls Wilder and he said, "LeAnn's books are even better then Laura's! She makes you feel like you are right there next to her."
We don't live too far from where LeAnn grew up so when my parents came to visit my husband and I he wanted to go find the farm LeAnn grew up on. After he saw the fields, the farm setting, he was rattling off all of the stories and picturing it as it was years ago. You don't often times get to meet the authors and see where they grew up but we were fortunate too.
I would highly recommend this book and any of LeAnn's book for any reader who is a country (boy or girl) or who longs for the country. You will really enjoy them!
We got to meet this author.......2007-05-01
and hear her talk about writing. She is not only a kind person and good writer, but very encouraging to others who may want to tell their own stories about life on their farm.
A very enjoyable book. She really helps put you right there with her.
A collection of autobiographical stories .......2004-12-08
Give Me A Home Where The Dairy Cows Roam is a collection of autobiographical stories drawn from author LeAnn Ralph's family dairy farm in Wisconsin in a time when small family farm were commonplace in the Badger State's rural countryside. Now that we live in a time when approximately 85% of American family dairy farms have disappeared into suburban township developments or absorbed into agribusiness scale corporate farming enclaves, LeAnn takes us back some forty years ago into a era when dairy farming was a dawn to dusk life, seven days a week lifestyle that bonded parents and children with hard work and a sense of the land, animals, and homestead that is rapidly passing from today's expanding urban society. More than just an autobiographical collection of anecdotal stories, Give Me A Home Where The Dairy Cows Roam is also enhanced with a recipe for making homemade ice cream without an ice cream maker and a recipe for "Norma's Homemade Bread". Highly recommended reading, Give Me A Home Where The Dairy Cows Roam should be on the shelves of every community library in Wisconsin.

Book Description
The late Dr. Roy L. Walford spent much of his life’s work researching low-calorie diets, and is now recognized as a pioneer of what is widely recognized as “calorie restriction” (CR)—a diet consisting of fewer calories while maintaining adequate nutrition. In The Anti-Aging Plan, his landmark book first published in 1994, Dr. Walford presents the results of his studies and clearly describes how the principles of nutrient-rich caloric limitation can be applied to everyday dieting habits. In the latter half of the book, Dr. Walford and his daughter Lisa, a chef and yoga instructor, offer over one hundred delicious recipe ideas that apply to Dr. Walford’s diet plan.
Customer Reviews:
The only proven way to extend life.......2007-06-26
Dr. Walford was a pioneer in the field of extending life via caloric restriction. Any person who performs objective medical research can confirm that there have been many legitimate medical studies that have shown that caloric restriction is the only proven way to extend life in mammals. The evidence supporting this is compelling. The challenge is how to implement this concept in everyday life, particularly if you enjoy eating food, as this reviewer does. It may be difficult for the average active adult to follow a severely restricted diet for a prolonged period of time. However, Dr. Walford's book contains some good recipes, which may be sufficient to put his research and concepts into dietary reality for many people. Dr. Walford's book is a well-written book and worth reading. It is not a fad diet, by any means. It is possible to use the information in this book as a motivator to eat fewer calories and, just as important, to eat more nutritionally dense food (e.g., whole grains, fresh vegetables, beans) as one grows older and as one's metabolism slows down. I would recommend this book for anyone interested in the subject. You can learn a lot by reading it. It is unfortunate that Dr. Walford died of Lou Gehrig's disease. I am sure he would have continued his valuable research, which he enjoyed sharing with others.
Concise and Factual.......2007-03-21
This is a very intriguing book and offers a lot of insight into how our bodies work and what is needed to make them work.
THIS IS NOT AN 'ULTRA LOW' CALORIE PLAN!.......2007-02-06
I ordered this book, along with the companion title "The Longevity Diet". I really wanted to learn more about high nutrition foods, and how to build a nutritious eating plan on a reduced calorie diet (800 -1200 calories). I was INCREDIBLY disappointed to learn, upon reciept, that the basic diet is built around 1,800 calories per day. At my height, build & goal weight, I would GAIN WEIGHT on this plan! I am returning these books... they are of absolutely no use to me.
The best of the CR books.......2006-04-28
The Anti Aging Plan is, in my opinion, the first book to read on the subject of Caloric Restriction (CR).
The basic idea of CR is that you can live much longer if you design a diet for yourself which is low in calories, but provides all of the necessary nutrition.
This book presents the essential facts, without getting bogged down in technical details. Anyone who wants to maximize their lifespan, or lose weight in a healthy way, can benefit from "The Anti Aging Plan."
Roy Walford's other book, "Beyond the 120 year diet" provides more technical data, which some people will want, but people to whom I've given copies of that book tend to be "blinded by the science."
Lisa Walford's book "The Longevity Diet" adds some interesting insights, but doesn't give enough information on it's own to get you started.
If you adopt the CR lifestyle, you'll certainly want to read all three. You'll also want to download the free software from [....] .
Personally, I've followed this diet plan for four years. I've lost 50 pounds, and improved my cholesterol from 240 to 151. It isn't easy, but it works.
Great Health Recipes.......2005-06-29
I agree with another reviewer that the recipes in this book are a GREAT resource. I cannot however give this book 5 stars, because the scientific introduction is a bit too weak, and even stretches the facts a bit. Readers need realism not rose-coloured scientific preaching. The other reviewer recommends purchasing Beyond the 120 year diet as a companion book to get the scientific details, but there you get the same over-optimistic interpretation of the facts. I would recommend instead the new book by Lisa Walford and Brian Delaney, The Longevity Diet. If you read The Longevity Diet, you will get a realistic picture of the state of anti-ageing research, and you will get a lot of interesting personal stories from people on the diet offering extremely useful tips for staying on the diet - something Roy Walford seemed to think wasn't necessary. Then you can turn to the recipes in the Anti-Aging Plan!

TINY AND DELICIOUS.......2004-12-15
FINGER FOOD:
Bite-sized Snacks to Share with Friends
Katherine Gasparini, Editor
Another imprint of the Advantage Publishers Group by
Laurel Glen Publishing
This beautiful little book, on glossy pages, spares no color with lots of tempting photographs. These small foods are rather like non-Spanish tapas, much Mediterranean influence however, and a lot of Asian touches. Several quick, little foods can make up a meal or a delightful snack with someone special. The book is divided into four groups of Finger Foods: Nibbles, Cold, Hot and Sweet. Here's some of the quicker choices:
* Olive Tapenade made with garlic, anchovies, capers, thyme, Dijon mustard, lemon juice, olive oil and a little brandy, if you wish.
* Spinach Pate is made with butter, coriander cayenne pepper, garlic, scallions, almonds and sour cream.
* Corn Salsa with Cumin. Make this with olive oil, jalapenos, sun-dried tomatoes and cilantro.
* Spiced Soy Crackers. These contain flour, soy flour, garem masala, paprika, olive oil and lemon juice.
* Green Mexican Salsa made from tomatillos, onion, jalapeno chili, garlic, cilantro and lime juice.
* Warm Cheese Dip. Fix this with butter, scallions, jalapeno chilies, cumin, sour cream and grated cheddar.
* Parmesan Puff Straws. For these you need only puff pastry, butter, Parmesan and one lightly beaten egg.
* Chicken Liver Parfait needs only butter, shallots, whipping cream, cognac, melba toasts and baby gherkins.
* Smoked Salmon Breadbaskets call for sliced white bread, olive oil, mayonnaise, vinegar, fresh dill, horseradish sauce, some salmon roe and dill sprigs.
* Spinach and Feta Triangles. Just gather olive oil, scallions, parsley, fresh dill, nutmeg, Parmesan, ricotta cheese, eggs, butter olive oil and phyllo pastry.
* Basil Mussels. Cook them with butter, shallots and white wine. Make the Basil Butter with basil leaves, butter, garlic and dry breadcrumbs.
* Mediterranean Twists are bread twists made from olive oil, onions, white wine, sugar, Italian parsley, anchovies Gruyere cheese, butter and phyllo pastry.
* Toasted Figs in Prosciutto calls for butter, orange juice and sage leaves.
* Feta, Arugula and Mushroom Bruschetta calls for Italian bread, garlic olive oil, butter and fresh basil.
* For something sweet, yet simple, make Fennel Wafers from sugar, sesame seeds, fennel seeds, flour, olive oil, beer and anisette.
The author states, "Finger Food is fun food to share. Shake off the conventions of cutlery and dig into bite-sized snacks and dips, perfect for taking the edge off of hunger in any dimension."

Gorgeous!.......2004-07-08
It's very simple: I can't resist finger food, nibbles and the like. When I am confronted with a huge plate of something I feel overwhelmed, so I definitely prefer small bites.
This book has got what I need: 200 recipes for gorgeous nibbles and small bites that will make you drool as you flip through the pages.
The book has a strange "chunky" format, it looks a bit like a brick and it sticks to the essential, so there is no introduction, no glossary, no introductory chit chat about the recipes, BUT there is a gorgeous picture facing each recipe and the more exotic ingredients are explained in notes. You open the book and you find the table of contents (nibbles, cold, hot, sweet and the index) and then, straight away, the first recipe.
Some of the recipes are well known like the ones for hummous, tapenade, aioli, guacamole and some others, but I found a number of interesting original ones and new twists on something familiar. I'm really happy I found the recipe for Bitterballen (a Dutch appetizer), which I had been looking for for a while. I haven't tried it yet, but it seems similar to the one I tasted. What I have tried is the Hot Crab and Lemon Dip, and we all loved it! Sinfully rich with crab, shallots and cheese melting together, mmmm...
And the Herbed Lavash, easy and so tasty that you can't stop eating it; and the Herb Pikelets with Pear and Blue Cheese Topping, small herbed pancakes that contrast beautifully with the creaminess of the blue cheese topping and the crunchy sweetness of the pears. And the cute mini frittatas baked in muffin tins: they have a very professional look and taste divine.
There is something to suit every occasion, from the posh "oysters with lemon herb dressing" and "mushroom pat? on Melba toasts", to the homey "Mexican bites" and "small salmon-lemon cakes", from the exotic "sesame and wasabi-crusted tuna cubes" and "Thai beef salad rice paper rolls", to the vegetarian "vegetable shapes with cr?me fra?che and fried leek" (really stylish) and "lentil patties with cumin skordalia".
I haven't tried them yet, but they sit high on my list of plates to try.
The recipes are well laid out: one recipe per page, ingredients on one side and clear, step-by-step instruction on the other, on the opposite page there is a picture of what you are supposed to get. They range in complexity from very simple to fairly time consuming, but it is easy to choose.
In short, this is a simple, down-to-earth guide to wonderful food, both for special occasions and for everyday treats. Yum!
Good Range.......2003-03-02
I've been looking for a good book of finger food for awhile and was happy to find this one. Usually, the recipes for finger food are too exotic or time comsuming, this book has a few of those but there are plenty that are not too complex. Finger Food also has a range of ethnic styles, such as Mexican, Asian & American flavored foods.
