            Book Description

Color, vitality, seductive landscapes, and dazzling blue seas—the essential ingredients of the graceful arc of islands distributed around the azure waters of the Caribbean Sea.

The variety and beauty of the islands of the Caribbean, celebrated here in Joan Tapper's commentaries and Nik Wheeler's breathtaking photography, have become bywords for the good life, as places to visit and places to live.

There is something for everyone here in the choice of islands. The larger ones—Cuba, Jamaica, Puerto Rico—offer cities, resorts, beaches, leisure facilities, and lush interiors. Smaller islands, like Antigua and Martinique, have developed reputations as places for the discriminating visitor, offering fine dining and stylish night spots. And for those for whom "island" is synonymous with getting away from it all, there is every variety of small exclusive hideaway, from Mustique and Nevis to islands that are just bumps in the ocean.

The physical beauties of all these islands—pink, white, and golden sands stretching between the sea and the flowering landscapes—are all reflected in this book. But the author and photographer also convey a relaxed lifestyle: quaint harbors and winding streets, houses both grand and humble, elegant hotels, quirky bars and restaurants, open-air markets, cuisine, and art.

Whether looked at as a group or taken individually, these islands are truly paradise on earth, fully celebrated in this lovely book. Over 200 color photographs.

              Book Description

A path-breaking work when first published in 1973, The Southern Dream remains the standard work on attempts by the South to spread American slavery into the tropics--Cuba, Mexico, and Central America in particular--before the Civil War. Robert May shows that the South's expansionists had no more success than when they tried to extend slavery westward. As one after another of their plots failed, southern imperialists lost hope that their labor system might survive in the Union. Blaming northern Democrats and antislavery Republicans alike for their disappointed dreams, alienated southerners embraced secession as an alternative means to achieving the tropical slave empire that they craved. Had war not erupted at Fort Sumter, Confederates might have attempted to conquer the Caribbean basin.

May's book serves as an important reminder that foreign policy cannot be divorced from the writing of American history, even in regard to seemingly domestic matters like the causes of the Civil War. Contending that America's Manifest Destiny became "sectionalized" in the 1850s, he explains why southerners considered Caribbean expansion so important and shows how southerners used their clout in Washington to initiate diplomatic schemes like the notorious Ostend Manifesto and presidential attempts to buy the slaveholding island of Cuba from Spain. He also describes southern filibustering plots against Latin American domains, such as the aborted designs on Mexico of the colorful Knights of the Golden Circle and the actual invasions of Central America by native Tennessean William Walker. Walker struck a major blow for the expansion of slavery when he legalized it during his occupation of Nicaragua. Most important, May relates how Caribbean plots affected American public opinion and ignited sectional friction in congressional debates. May argues that President-elect Abraham Lincoln might have saved the Union in the winter of 1860-61, had he agreed to last minute concessions facilitating slavery's future expansion towards the tropics.

May's fascinating and often surprising account internationalized the causes of the Civil War. It should be read by anyone who wishes to understand the complex reasons why Americans came to blows with each other in 1861. This reprinting features a new preface by the author, which addresses the latest research on the Caribbean question.

Virgin Gorda is the second largest of the British Virgin Island and one of the most beautiful, most unspoiled and tranquil islands in the whole of the Caribbean. Far from being a mere coffee table travel book, Caribbean Dreams avoids the Caribbean clichs and portrays the essence of the island, allowing the pictures to tell their own story about this extraordinary paradise.

                Book Description

Many people toy with the idea of packing up their lives and moving to a remote island in the tropics. This book relates the hilarious tale of two middle-class New Englanders who succumbed to that dream.

The Paradise they desired is the beautiful and sometimes whacky island of St. John in the U.S. Virgin Islands. Life's misadventures caused havoc, but these folks persevered. How they got to Paradise will inspire the most jaded reader to believe that any dream is possible.

The realities of living on a small Caribbean island where donkeys and goats may be more plentiful than people is an eye-opener for everyone! On St. John, folks drive on the left side of the road and hitchhike by pointing their index finger in the direction they're going. It's a place where tree frogs give nightly concerts that compete with the sounds of reggae music floating up the hillside from tiny town of Cruz Bay. The only way to leave is by boat... and sometimes that's easier said than done.

Loaded with island trivia, this new book uncovers the unique rhythms of daily life in the U.S. Virgin Islands. Learning 'island-time' and having a sense of humor counts in Paradise, as these two transplants from New England found. Their first-year adventures on-island will make you chuckle as you come to realize - Paradise is a state of mind.

                4 out of 5 stars Desiring Paradise.......2006-06-07

Having been to St.John several time I found this book quite entertaining. We have a dream of retiring to St.John and I found this book very enlightening. I could not put the book down, read it in a day. It's funny, smart, a little disorganized but nonetheless a great read!

4 out of 5 stars For armchair travellers or those really making the move..........2004-04-04

I really enjoyed this book. I read it several years ago and often remember it. I was drawn to the book by its cover and because, at the time, I had a close friend who was from USVI. Anyway, I thought this was a really special book written by two people (a married couple) who actually put their dream into motion.

Their dream? To move to the US Virgin Islands and get on "island time." For people who are not from the Caribbean, making the move to this totally different lifestyle might seem impractical, but this couple shows how they planned out, to the T, their move, complete with saving money, bringing their automobiles to the island, finding work (ultimately setting up their own business on the island), and adjusting to a very different lifestyle.

There is good advice in this book about making a long-distance and culture-shifting move. It takes planning. After reading "Desiring Paradise" I felt that, if I should ever take up my fantasy of owning a mango farm somewhere in the Caribbean, I could do it. It really is an inspirational book in that way. It's also a great book for armchair travellers. As its nonfiction, there are some great slice-of-life passages about the Virgin Islands, their topography, their people, and the much more humane way in which people live and relate there. Everytime I think about this book, I am filled with warm memories, both of the book and of my visit to USVI.

I would recommend this book to: people considering moving to the Virgin Islands; people interested in the USVI or modern-day Caribbean culture in general; those interested in a good story about planning and goal-setting and the amazing results it can have.

5 out of 5 stars A Must read book for those planning on the move to the USVI.......2003-05-15

I read this Book in three short days I couldnt put it down but to go to work. I plan on the big move to St Croix with in two yrs. I could realte to this story we are at the same place as the couple in the book was and is unbelievavble on how true to fact it has been. A must read for those who are truly "Desirinig Paradise"

                3 out of 5 stars Written by a yuppie........2002-11-07

Before I criticize this book, let me first say I gleaned lots of useful ideas for my own relocation to the island. As much as I enjoyed reading it, I was put off by the fact that this couple -- and in particular the wife, who narrates the story -- had yuppie written all over them. They struck me as people who couldn't bear to live a day without their cappuccino machine and laptop computers, raising serious doubts in my mind as to their ability to successfully adapt to the vicissitudes of island life. Also, they seemed to have money to burn, as evidenced by their too-frequent jaunts to St. Croix and other destinations, making me feel that on occasion they were losing their focus on their goal of relocating to St. John

I think this would have been a much more effective story if it had been written by average working-class people whose Continental lives were played out and who held the burning desire to move to a beautiful island to start all over again, and who perhaps had to take on second jobs to generate additional income to make this happen. I didn't feel entirely sorry for Karin and Bob because they were two well-to-do people living a seemingly perfect life in a beautiful New England home with all the amenities they could ask for. They didn't seem particularly unhappy with any aspects of their lives, in sharp contrast to several people I know who have made the move to St. John. The only reason they wanted out was because they wanted a taste of Paradise. Not that there's anything wrong with that; it's a perfectly valid reason. But I would have empathized with them much more had they been down on their luck.

In retrospect, I must say that Karin and Bob weren't good candidates for relocating to St. John. At times I felt they would have benefited more by vacationing there several times a year instead -- they had salaries and work schedules that would have allowed them this privilege. I felt it impossible to feel sorry for them and at times didn't care whether they made it to the island or not.

Having said all that, this book scores huge points in the true-to-life parts describing St. John. It really did make me feel as if I was there with them. I've been to the island several times in the past few years, so I was able to validate these experiences.

2 out of 5 stars This is NOT about St. John!.......2002-08-23

We had just returned from our first trip to St. John. I scoured the internet for books on this incredible island just wanting more, more, more! I was intrigued by the title (feeling much the same!) and ordered.

It wasn't too far in that I realized Ms. Schlesinger is a very self-absorbed woman - I didn't count the number of references to "I" but "I" got sick of reading about inconveniences - she seemed more to want us to feel sorry for her, having to move to St. John! Get over it! The number of people she inconvenienced along her way to paradise far outnumbered her own inconveniences - I felt sorry for her poor husband.

The few references to St. John, the island, the beaches, lifestyle etc. were wonderfully refreshing - it was reliving the pure pleasure we experienced on our first short visit.

We just returned from our 2nd trip and I decided to re-read the book to again relive our trip. I was struck again, even harder this time, that this book is more about the author than St. John. Who cares?

Skimming through the book to find the few times we are actually introduced to the life on St John, I read every word and enjoyed it all. If someone is interested in learning about St.John this is NOT the book to buy.I gave it 2 stars only because of the references to the island, not her writing skills.

I would have enjoyed reading this much more perhaps, had it been written by Mr. Schlesinger, who seems far more down to earth and less selfish!

4 out of 5 stars Stories that illuminate the strength of character needed..........2001-03-21

There are three reasons I can think of to buy this wonderful book. One, you are an information junky on Cuba and this unique segment of Cuban history must not escape your grasp. Second, and most likely, you are going to this unique Cuban south coast island to explore it and/or dive its great coral reefs, and want the only English language book devoted to this island. Or, three, closer to my reason for having the book, you are thinking about dropping out of the rat race, maybe on a remote island, and you are fascinated that in the early 1900s (and before) American settlers came and survived the demanding and difficult times. You want to read about dreams of pirates, ranchers, prisoners and soldiers who for four centuries saw this island a place where dreams come true. You want to read the actual interviews and stories that illuminate the strength of character needed to persevere and become a survivor; a survivor long before any Caribbean island media, much less a televison hit show.

This book is replete with their stories. Jane McManus saw that the unique pioneers would die out by the end of the 90's and has done all of us a great service by capturing their unique and fascinating stories. The story of Margaret Pitman Rice (1901-1992) who arrived in Cuba with her husband and children from Toronto because of a treasure map found in a very old turret-wound watch. The story itself is spellbinding and the outcome, unbelievable. She punctuates the stories throughout the book with scattered black & white photographs.

I read this wonderful book while in Cuba and visiting the Island of Joventud. I had the happen-chance of meeting Jane McManus while I was in Havana and was even more impressed with her and her work after meeting her. She is an American Journalist that has lived in Cuba for more than thirty years. I am confident that if, for any or all of the reasons list above, you want to read this book you, will not be disappointed. Recommended

                  Book Description

As spiritual home of Che Guevara and arch-enemy of the United States for more than forty years, Cuba exerts a powerful hold over people's imaginations. The Revolution and its leader, Fidel Castro, have survived invasion, repeated external and internal crisis, and most astonishingly, economic collapse and political isolation. What is at the root of the continuity and success of the 'Revolution' and in what sense can it be termed a 'revolution'? This book is the first in-depth study of Cuba to examine its history and revolutionary transformation through the evolution of ideology and myth. Music, political campaigns, street and media propaganda, literature, cinema, and drama have served to establish a cubanista tradition, supported by powerful myths such as Che Guevara and Jose Marti, the New Man, youth, and an Afro-Cuban identity. Challenging preconceptions and conventional wisdoms about Cuba and its leadership, this book presents a remarkable portrait of the distinctive history of the island's culture. The interplay of history, revolutionary action, and ideology through myth and collective experience make this book essential reading for Cuban scholars, Latin American and US historians, political analysts and those generally interested in the history and future of Cuban political culture.

                    Book Description

Dark Horse delivers another fantastic collection of rare classics from a comics legend! Russ Manning, famous for his spectacular work on the Tarzan newspaper strips of the late sixties, brought fans his "Tarzan of the Future" in Magnus, Robot Fighter. While the original comic series lasted only twenty-one issues, Manning's creation has survived generations, influencing countless science fiction artists and writers to this day. Fans of Alex Raymond, Mac Raboy, or Wally Wood should not miss this beautifully bound hardcover, the latest addition to Dark Horse's line of science fiction comics classics.

Others have mentioned the problem with the reprints, and I agree - I almost returned it, but ya know, you'll never find these anywhere else. I still have the original issues 14-21, and can attest to the brilliance of the original comic book artwork & color, which is why I ordered the 3 books. I am guessing there were digital scanning issues? Or was it just in the printing process? Who knows? Who cares! It's still great and worth it...but Dark Horse should redo them and send we Amazonians complimentary new versions when they're done - everyone agree? Anyway - the message of Magnus is to not trust machines, and it's never been more true than today.

5 out of 5 stars Dark Horse Does it Again.......2005-05-08

You could pay hundreds of dollars for a pristine copy of volume one of Russ Manning's 1963 Gold Key sci-fi comic, Magnus Robot Fighter. Or you could get this beautiful, color, hardbound Dark Horse edition of the first seven comics, not for the retail $50, but for a much lower Amazon price. Baby Boomers will remember Manning's ground- breaking classic, which everywhere raised the bar for sci-fi comics, but newer readers who may have discovered Magnus through the many later comics and graphic novels editions, will also be delighted to discover the original source.

Manning is known for his work on Tarzan and other comics, and his art in Magnus is a delight to the eye, with a sweeping painterly style reminiscent of Alex Raymond's Flash Gordon comics. Unheard of at the time, he was also allowed to sign his comics for Gold Key, the later comics imprint of Western Publishing, which had also published Dell comics.

NorthAm, the continent-spanning city of the 41st century, is completely run by, and completely dependent on, robots which obey a variant of Isaac Asimov's three laws of robotics. Forseeing this dangerous trend, a Yoda-like robot named A1 (does that sound like AI?) raises an orphan human named Magnus to fight robots should the need arise. He trains his body as a well-oiled machine until he can deliver karate chops with "steel smashing strength." For various reasons, some robots turn against humans and try to destroy NorthAm, often in the employ of a human dictator, and Magnus is called out as a man on a mission. In the style of early 'sixties sci-fi, Manning always closed with a moral, that we must never become too dependent on technology, and that it is meant to be the servant of man.

Manning created a host of intriguing robot designs (some of them resemble Ideal's Zeroids), and this book includes all seven original Gold Key covers (without the text), as well as a brief bio of Manning and Foreword by Mike Royer. Now when so many comics and cartoons are spun off from licensed properties, it's amazing to think that in his designs and stories for Magnus, Manning created an original hero and unique millieu that are still inspiring today.

4 out of 5 stars An Excellent Traditional Hero.......2005-03-31

This is a great addition to any collection! Some say today that Magnus the Robot Fighter lacks the darkness and the depth of modern(ist) "heroes". However, I say that Magnus stands way above what passes for modern(ist) "heroes" in that the protagonists of the stories are true and honourable and are not mere scape goats for those who today like to pretend they are just being "human" when they lie, cheat, steal and decieve others.

Magnus the Robot Fighter is a role model that is NEEDED for the young of today - and a very refreshing reminder of how things SHOULD be and of how we SHOULD strive for the ultimate good.

As to be specific about the reprint - I would have liked to have seen the ads and the full covers reprinted in the book but the quality is good (even though in the early 60's the quality of the comic itself could have been printed a bit better ...). It will make a great addition to any bookshelf and will bring back some nostalgia to those who remember this fantastic series.

I would have gladly given 5 stars and I believe Magnus the Robot Fighter series is definately worth MORE than 5 stars but I'm rating this specific edition.

Too bad Valiant tried to change Magnus into a modern(ist) hero ... maybe they'd still be in business ...

                    4 out of 5 stars Silver-Age reproductions strike a cord.......2005-02-17

I am an avid collector of comics and started collecting the Marvel Masterworks when they first came out. DC followed suit and now Dark Horse is jumping on the bandwagon. Marvel and DC have lots of history and should concentrate on their own bodies of work, but it is nice to see someone step up to the plate and take on the lesser known publishers of the Silver-Age (although technically, DC did it first with T.H.U.N.D.E.R. Agents).

Dark Horse does this edition justice. For those of us who were not alive to see these in the original release, it is great to see Manning's comics on the printed page (and at a fraction of the cost of the individual original books). Manning was a pioneer, do yourself a favor and pick up this book, I was glad I did.

5 out of 5 stars Squeee! Magnus is back!.......2005-01-03

As most people know, DC Comics has had their archive program (hardcover reprints of older comics) for over a decade now. Not only has DC archived their big guns characters (Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman), but they've also gotten their lesser characters (Sgt. Rock, Doom Patrol), the characters they've acquired (Blackhawk, Shazam) AND characters they've licenced for the simple purpose of archiving them (the Spirit, T.H.U.N.D.E.R. Agents). Given this nice bit of diversity, I took it for granted that at some point, DC would also get around to archiving the characters published by Western/Gold Key. Imagine my surprise when it was announced that Gold Key's work would be archived, NOT by DC, but by Dark Horse!

Not that I'm complaining, of course. It's great to see "Magnus: Robot Fighter, 4000 AD" and "Doctor Solar: Man of the Atom" in some format. And Dark Horse isn't so unlikely. This is a company that built itself on licenced properties (rather like Western), and has itself begun a variety of reprint programs. So, they've entered the arena. Good for them.

Like most readers my age, my first exposure to these characters, including Magnus, came in the early 1990s, when they were acquired and published by the now-defunct Valiant Comics. I did get on board somewhat late, when the whole of the Valiant line was beginning its slouch towards despair, so to speak. I did enjoy "Magnus" for a while. However, my decision to read this Archive volume has more to do with my interest in Silver Age comics. I am quite pleased that I did.

For those coming in late, Magnus is a denizen of the year 4000 AD (or AD 4000, as is correct), a time where all of the citizens of the continent-size city North Am have become complacent and entirely too dependent on robots. Raised by the very first robot, Magnus was taught how to fight evil robots, his body honed until his strength could smash steel. And for the seven issues contained in this volume, that's exactly what Magnus does, battling corrupt robots or corrupt humans who use robots for their own nefarious purposes. At the same time, he forms a tight bond with Leeja Clane, daughter of a senator, herself sick of robot control.

The big draw here of course is that great artwork by Russ Manning. The line-work is absolutely clean, tight, and vibrant. Further, the designs of the robots, the costumes of the humans, and the city itself, demonstrate the vibrancy and imagination Manning possessed.

Manning wasn't a slouch in the writing department, either. Each story exhibits an excellent grasp of pacing and drama, as well as ingenuity. The villains are also legitimate threats. H-8, the corrupt robot controller of the pol-robs (police robots), Mekman, the human who wants to be a robot, and Xyrkol, Magnus's most persistent foe, all present complex challenges that draw the reader in, as we watch and wonder how Magnus will inevitably beat them. It's difficult to zero in on one favorite story. All are excellent examples of why this series attained its classic stature.

However, due to thematic concerns, there is a certain of repetition in the stories. Manning's central theme was wariness of technology. Thus, Magnus often intones dire warnings about how lazy man has become, how dependent on robots man is, and how man should always be prepared for the day when the robots revolt. The stories, naturally, follow these predictions, as Magnus battles malfunctioning robots, infected robots, and megalomaniacal robots. It's fortunate that Manning new how to write an entertaining story, because the formula might have worn thin.

Someone else has griped about the quality of the reprint. Granted, the colors are not as vibrant as they could have been. However, I'm not sure if that's Dark Horse's fault. Having looked through some of the original comics, I don't think Gold Key had great coloring process to begin with (compared with DC, and, much later, Marvel). Granted, Dark Horse could have re-colored the series. Still, that's really a minor quibble, and in no way impacted my enjoyment of the series. If nothing else, the original covers, nearly all painted art, are included, and like most GK covers, are all gorgeous.

Dark Horse has planned only three volumes, encompassing Manning's work. This seems limited, since this series did continue beyond Manning (not much, but still). I'm also looking forward to the "Doctor Solar" hardcover, and the further volumes of "Magnus". Terrific stuff.

For those who are familiar with his "Max Danger" series of books, this is somewhat of a departure, but still with all the humor and light-heartedness of those books. In a way that is never heavy or overly serious, Bob Collins clearly and correctly highlights the differences in Japanese and American culture and society. The book is a quick read, that will often have your laughing out loud, but at the end, you will have learned a lot, especially if you are unfamiliar with the Japanese.

5 out of 5 stars Easy read VERY informative.......2003-06-16

The depth makes it more of a primer than a heavy duty text, but it is so very good at that job that I would recommend it as a basic read for ANYONE involved in dealing with Japanese corporations or relationships. It tells you frankly and easily just what background gives the Japanese view on life. And understanding where someone "comes from" makes so many things easier to understand.

I have passed this book to countless people I know it's readable quickly and yet you'll use it as a reference for years to come.

                            Extremely recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Funny and very informative.......1999-06-07

This book was great. It was one of the funniest books I've ever read and it gave a lot of important information. It really helps you *understand* the Japanese, as opposed to just hearing some information. It gives you examples of contrast between Americans and the Japanese. Anyone interested in Japan should read this book. Absoloutely beautiful.
