    Book Description

By simply learning how to look at the world around us more creatively we can experience life more fully, David Finn assures us. In this newest title in Abrams' popular "How to Look at . . ." series, the acclaimed photographer reveals-in a charming, intimate, conversational text and evocative photographs-how to develop an enriched way of seeing.

Writing on such themes as "the mind's eye," "the gift of light," and "forms that shape our lives," Finn, who has authored three previous titles in the "How to Look at . . ." series, implores readers to experience the world visually with sensitivity, imagination, and passion. He shares his own personal view of how to enjoy more intensely the pleasures that make life truly worth living: beautiful sights, fascinating objects, shared experiences, and warm companionship.

    70 photographs, 30 in full color, 6 x 8"

DAVID FINN is an acclaimed photographer whose images have illustrated many monographs and books, particularly on sculpture. He has written several titles for Abrams, including How to Look at Photographs, How to Look at Sculpture, and How to Visit a Museum.

1 out of 5 stars Not to put to fine a point on it..........2004-12-12

but this book is worthless. The one key phrase in the book, "with passion," is obvious. The rest of the book is meaningless filler about the author's experience looking at things. It's just devoid of content.

2 out of 5 stars not what is promised.......2001-02-16

Maybe I took the title and reviews too literally, but I think this book should be called "Things I Look At" -- a title which promises less interesting content, and delivers just that.

Here is a short excerpt (page 50): "The other day I saw a tree right in front of the office building in which I work; I couldn't believe that I had never noticed it before and I admired its wonderfully graceful branches. .... On a cold winter day I saw a policewoman directing traffic and speculated about the clothes she must be wearing to keep herself warm."

First, why should I trust this author to teach me to see things anew when he hasn't noticed a beautiful tree he passes frequently? Secondly, while the premise of the book rests on the idea of enriching one's visual appreciation, the author's decriptions are consistently impoverished. I would hope that the author would proceed to tell me what it is that makes the tree branches graceful -- paint a verbal picture and teach me how to look at the tree. Or tell me how to approach a painting, to see it from afar and then approach it -- what do I look for that makes it special and beautiful. This never happens; instead it is a series of personal anecdotes that rarely probe very deeply.

Pictures are interesting, some in color, but again they are not used to accomplish what the title promises.

A disappointment unless one is interested in the author rather than the subject of the title.

5 out of 5 stars Freshen your perspective with this book........2000-11-05

Once again Finn prompts a new way of seeing just as he did with museums, sculpture and photographs in his earlier books. His book will open your eyes to another way of seeing the world.

                Book Description

Image processing, the use of computers to process pictures, has revolutionized the fields of medicine, space exploration, geology, and oceanography, and has become the hottest area in digital signal processing. This book provides a comprehensive introduction to the most popular image processing techniques used today, without getting bogged down in the complex mathematical presentations found in most image processing books and journals. The book covers the hottes t topics in image proessing, including whole chapters on the processing of color images, image warping and morphing techniques, and image compression. The diskette, written in portable C code, provides a "hands-on" introduction to image processing techniques that can be incorporated into the user's applications. For computer programmers and electrical engineers who need to enhance image processing applications.

                Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars simple and helpful.......2001-04-04

The book is quite simple but that's what makes it understandable, it was quite helpful to me. Unfortunately the source code could not be read completely from the floppy and the authors email is not valid (I would appreciate some help with that).

4 out of 5 stars A useful basic book on IP code with some nice extras.......2000-09-07

The title of this book is more self-effacing than it needs to be. This is quite a good book on basic image processing programming. The most attractive feature of its code is that the author has created C functions that do not require an elaborate and idiosyncratic interface to use (unlike, say, _Computer Vision and Image Processing: a practical approach using CVIPtools_ by Scott Umbaugh). This code can be easily included in your already-existing IP library code.

The choice of topics is mostly middle-of-the-road. It covers the various point processes (arithmetic, bitwise logical operations, histogram-based transforms, etc), areal operations (convolution kernels and selection kernels), image resizing, 2-image operations, and compression (this last the weakest of the coverage, but still quite acceptable for a general book) in a very clear and competent manner. In this regard, the best surprise is no surprise.

But even in these plain-vanilla topics, Mr. Crane manages to provide some nice touches. For example, his is the only book of its sort that I know of to provide the formulas for generating Gaussian and Laplacian of Gaussian convolution kernels of arbitrary size and roll-offs.

Most satisfyingly, this book includes coverage of some topics that are truly useful but typically not covered in basic IP programming texts. These include various approaches to digital half-toning and some wonderful explorations of image warping and morphing.

All in all, this book is a small treasure. If you program for a living and image processing is part of your domain, the book is well worth having on your shelf. If you program for a hobby and are interested in learning how to work with digital images, this may end up being the only such book you feel the need to buy.

3 out of 5 stars Errors in the text.......2000-07-27

Overall the author explains image processing concepts well. I have owned the book for several years and now have a need for it. It is very helpful in determining which components of an image processing suite are needed for an application. The C code appears to be well written. Unfortunately, there are errors in the text and the author's email address does not work as of 7/26/00.

                5 out of 5 stars Excellent book.......2000-02-16

A great book for intro to image processing. Example codes are very well written, with an emphasis on clarity (as opposed to using compact C operators which make it difficult for others to understand).

A great job overall. I recommend it highly.

4 out of 5 stars Image Processing Fast and Easy.......1997-05-14

A well done tutorial on how to approach complex image processing problems with ease. The book comes with useful documentation and example code that brings difficult theories within reach of amateur programmers or the curious.Rounds out any programming library

2 out of 5 stars Comic writing at its worst.......2007-09-16

Mindhunter is a perfect example of why comics have never really been accepted as a legitimate form of art. The artwork isn't bad, but the writing and story are absolute rubbish. From beginning to end, I had trouble just figuring out what the heck was going on. It's a struggle to connect the logic from one frame to the next. It's as if the writers just decided to throw in every sci-fi cliche they could think of and hoped it all worked out in the end. This book is supposed to be a sequel to Overkill, the first book featuring the Darkness, Witchblade, Aliens and Predator, but there is no continuity at all between the two books. The only reason one should buy Mindhunter (even the title doesn't make sense) is if you have to have all the books featuring your favorite character. Otherwise, save your money. Well, I suppose if you're interested in seeing Sara Pezzini in her weakest and most pathetic form, that would be another reason to pick it up. My advice: steer clear.

                      1 out of 5 stars Awful, yech!.......2007-03-11

I don't know much about Darkness or Witchblade. And I didn't learn too much about them from this. What I did learn is that David Quinn wrote a story that was awful from beginning to end. I still can't figure out what happened. Was it all in their minds? Were the Aliens being mind-controlled? WHAT THE HELL WAS GOING ON???

                      Terrible.

4 out of 5 stars They have to team up again!.......2002-10-01

Sarah's Witchblade and The Darkness are as different as night and day. However, they must team up with bizzard murders happen. Unknown to them though, the Predators are playing with them.

                      Who will/can win?

My only real gripe is that it needed to be just a little longer to smooth out the edges of the story more.

It's one of the worst things I've ever read or seen. I used to be a fan of Top Cow trade paperbacks but this thing is unforgiveably bad. Try some other comics like Sin City, you'd be better off.

i have ta give this one the five star rating, simply cause the witchblade and darkness comics are the greatest comics to ever exist, well, ok, maybe not the greatest, but they're sure as hell my favorite. GO CHECK EM OUT! IF YA DONT LUV IT, uh......um......well.....thats ur opinion.

                          Product Description

The biggest Top Cow/Marvel crossover yet drops into stores in June! Bringing together The Darkness and Witchblade along with no less than three Marvel superstars, this crossover is going to bring the house down! Every mob boss needs a competent lawyer. Jackie Estacados hired a great one (even though he does happen to be blind). But even if Jackie can beat the rap, the Spirit of Vengeance is not so easily satisfied. As if a battle royale between The Darkness and Ghost Rider weren't enough, this special features the Incredible Hulk rampaging through New York City, both the current and former bearers of the Witchblade, and even an appearance by the master of the mystic arts, Doctor Strange. A stand-alone story that nevertheless sets the stage for Top Cow's FIRST BORN event, this is a tale in which all hell breaks loose -- literally!

4 out of 5 stars Prelude to First Born.......2007-09-16

The main reason one should get Unholy Union is that it is a prelude to First Born #1. It doesn't do anything fantastic in terms of the artwork, and most of it is mindless action, but there are some interesting tidbits in here leading to the events of First Born #1. Ghost Rider, Hulk, Witchblade and Darkness all make forgettable appearances. The worthwhile sections of this comic come in the form of Dr. Strange and his mystical probings into a vast conflict that he sees unfolding. He's not sure exactly what is going on, but he's taking measures to see that the parties involved are not caught totally unawares. I don't know if the First Born series is going to be any good, but if it is, you'll want to have Unholy Union in your collection.
