The story of Great Britain was written in seawater, and no period was more important than the two decades under scrutiny in Dean King's Every Man Will Do His Duty. This collection of memoirs, diaries, and accounts written by Royal Navy personnel (both English and American) during the Napoleonic period will be a sure hit with any reader who has devoured the Aubrey-Maturin novels of Patrick O'Brian. Every Man Will Do His Dutythe title is, of course, Admiral Lord Nelson's famous admonition to his sailors at Trafalgarpulses with the vividness, immediacy, and honesty that only primary sources can supply. The book is filled with intriguing details of war as it was practiced on the high seas from 1793 to 1815. Editor King has done an excellent job selecting his sources; in addition to views from the captain's quarters, Every Man Will Do His Duty boasts plenty of material penned by mariners of a much humbler station; their accounts provide the bulk of the book's humor. Fans of the nautical novel will find this book a worthy addition to their library, and so will students of English history.

A wonderful glimpse of Iron men on wooden ships.......2001-10-09
"Every Man Will Do His Duty" is an anthology of 22 excerpts from actual diaries and journals of men who served in the the British and American navies during the late 18th century and early 19th century.
I loved this book. Each selection was entertaining and well chosen, both for the glimpses the provide into the lives of the officers and men who served on such ships, and for their historical context (Such as Dr. William Beatty's account of the death of Horatio Nelson).
I'd strongly suggest it to anyone who enjoys Naval History, or historical fiction (Such as Forrester or O'Brian) on the subject. Give it a read, it's worth it.

.
If all you read in this book is "The Audacious Cruise of the Speedy", you will have gotten your money's worth.
If the only stories you read are the two chapters from the Nagle Journel, "For the Good of My Soul, 1795," and "Mad Dickey's Amusement, 1798-1800", you will have gotten your money's worth.
But you get more than this. You get a total of 22 stories picked from many to capture the history and character of the times.
If you like Patrick O'Brien, and C.S. Forester, you will enjoy the history that gave seed to these stories. You will recognize the events of Lucky Jack Aubrey's fiirst cruise in the cruise of the Speedy, and be amazed.

Down to the Sea in Ships.......2000-06-24
For anyone who is interested in naval warfare in the age of sail in general, or in the Napoleonic period, this book is a must. It is simply superb.
This anthology of first hand accounts covers events in both the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars, including the War of 1812, in which the Royal Navy getting some very nasty surprises, and even nastier defeats, at the hands of the small, but expert United States Navy.
Some of the subjects covered are the Battle of Cape St. Vincent in 1797, the sea fight between HMS Macedonian and the USS United States in 1812, the cruise into the Pacific of the USS Essex, and such esoteric subject as 'the noted pimp of Lisbon' and Bermuda in time of peace.
This book is an enjoyable read, an outstanding primary source, and one of the best books available on this often neglected subject.
A window on the age of sail.......2000-06-06
I bought this book because I started down the slippery slope which begins with Patrick O'Brian's *Master* *and* *Commander* and ends with a wall covered with naval prints and trips to Nelson-phile conventions.
This book is an anthology of first hand accounts of naval life in the age of sail. The stories are dramatic and gripping, though I wished the they were longer. The editors have helpfully added some diagrams and maps, though I would have prefered even more.
It is very interesting to see the overlap with the O'Brian books. As O'Brian points out in one of his forwards, at least sometimes he did not need to invent the plot, but merely re-arrange and sort out the pacing.

Book Description
The period of the French Wars (1793-1815), known as the golden age of fighting sail in Great Britain because of the extraordinary victories won by the Royal Navy, produced an impressive roster of brilliant flag officers. To date, however, these naval leaders have been overshadowed by the legendary status of their contemporary Admiral Lord Nelson. This book corrects the oversight by putting eleven other admirals in the limelight.
In this collection of short biographical essays Lee Bienkowski assesses each officer's career, describing the factors that influenced the subject's character and contributed to his success. While each biography calls attention to the distinctive traits of the admiral profiled, together they provide an interesting perspective of the Royal Navy, its leadership, and the wars between Britain and the rest of the world. Many of the men included have not been the subjects of study since the nineteenth century. The author makes liberal use of primary source material. Among those profiled are the noble-born Lord Howe whose fame came at the Glorious First of June, Lord Duncan who fought at the Battle of Camperdown, Sir John Duckworth at the Battle of San Domingo, and Lord de Saumarez at the Battle of Algeceras. These relatively unknown but highly skilled leaders made an impact on history, and their fact-filled portraits not only hold the reader's attention, but also contribute significantly to the literature of the period.

Book Description
One evening Mason Matthews got a phone call. Just as a singer at San Antonio's Alameda Theater was about to mount a horse backstage and ride out in front of the audience, her horse fell through the floor. Would Dr. Matthews come figure out what to do? This was only one of the dilemmas that faced the veterinarian during his nearly half-century career. Texas ranchers had emergencies as they began to stock African animals. A group of nuns running a farm needed to get their goats out of the pig feed. An exotic dancer needed her cobra defanged. In this book, illustrated by Lyn Belisle, Dr. Matthews shares his favorite vignettes from a lifetime of working with animals.

wanting more..........2000-08-04
Author Mason Matthews has compiled stories from his life as a veterinarian. He writes about treating exotics and traveling to foreign lands. What Matthews doesn't do, however, is go into much depth in his stories. Many of them, only a page or two long, are interesting, but are simplistic and shallow. I was expecting a heartier, beefier collection of tales. The 55 pages just isn't enough room for 18 stories. It's cute, light reading...but don't expect it to fill an afternoon.
Book Description
As women quickly discover, their life when treatment ends is very different from what it was before their diagnosis. Often exhausted, anxious, and emotionally volatile, they are beset by physical discomforts, fearful of intimacy, afraid for their children, worried about recurrence. Anticipating a return to “normalcy,” they discover that the old version of normal no longer applies.
There could be no more knowledgeable guide for women embarking on this complicated journey than Hester Hill Schnipper, who is herself both an experienced oncology social worker and a breast cancer survivor. This comprehensive handbook provides jargon-free information on the wide range of practical issues women face as they navigate the journey back to health, including:
•Managing physical problems such as fatigue, hot flashes, and aches and pains
•Handling relationships: your children, your partner, your parents, your friends.
•How to regain emotional and sexual intimacy
•Coping with financial and workplace issues
•Genetic testing: why, whether, when
•How to move beyond the fear of recurrence
•And much more
This indispensable book will help you rediscover your capacity for joy as you move forward into the future—as a survivor.

too fatalistic for Type A readers or those remaining realistic but positive.......2007-04-13
I bought this during the gap between my lumpectomy and chemo. I found it horribly depressing, with quotes like "you'll never be carefree again". Yes, there will be some changes in my lifestyle, but that's also true of diabetes and other diseases/conditions.
Her whole attitude seems to be "when" the cancer returns rather than "if", which is not how I intend to live the rest of my life, however long that may be.
Rings True, Says ChemoDIva.......2007-03-15
My sister just finished chemo and radiation for stage 3c breast cancer and this book, she says, is the best book she's read on the subject. Not all sunshine and roses, or something that is just too depressing for words. But like hearing from a good friend who is relating the same struggles that you are now going through.
Very informative and helpful!!!.......2007-01-11
I found this book extremely helpful and helped me understand what was happening with me and my breast cancer. It also explains other treatments, how to deal with other people and their reaction to my cancer, and understand my friend's cancers. Highly recommend for anyone who is dealing with this diaease!
Not what I hoped for.............2005-12-01
I found this book to be very depressing and dark. The author kept saying how cancer will haunt you the rest of your life, little hope to escape it, you'll just have to live with it. I've choosen differently, but this book was NOT helpful in my after treatment recovery.
Not crazy..........2005-04-02
After all my treatments for breast cancer were done, everyone told me i should feel better-but i didn't! My feeling were much worse than i expected after so many months and i'm glad i found and read this book! It helped me understand that it is OK to have lingering fears and emotions and that it is normal-especially months after treatment! Maybe it's because she is a survivor too, that makes this book so great!

Tofu... just what the heck is it?.......2001-03-28
Well, I have decided to return to vegetarianism... if that's the proper term. I gave up meat once before in college and enjoyed the many benefits of doing so. However, with a busy schedule and little time for eleborate meal planning, I always had difficulty finding the right things to eat. I have decided this time to better educate myself on what my choices are. I read this book because I had looked over a few vegetarian cookbooks and they are filled with recipes containing tofu. I kept asking myself... Just what the heck is it??
Well, EVERYTHING you ever wanted to know about tofu is to be found in this volume, including the reasons why tofu is a better choice not only for your health, but for the sake of world resources as the population of our planet increases.
I am not an environmentalist, not even close. If people want to eat animals, I don't mind. So, I do not generally agree with those who say that eating meat is "wrong"... But, I do have a genuine respect for any argument that champions efficiency over waste. After reading this book, I was surprised at how much grain it takes (in pounds) to produce just one ounce of red meat... which tastes mighty fine, but is not exactly the perfect source of protein and really shouldn't be eaten on a daily basis. (Texans forgive me.)
So, all in all I recommened this book if you are thinking changing your lifestyle, or perhaps pondering the possibility of cutting back on your intake of saturated fat etc...
Ben Franklin was a vegetarian... If he could do it 200 years ago, then we cetainly have no excuse.
Everything you'd ever want to know about cooking tofu.......2001-03-11
Want to know more than just how to stir-fry tofu? This book has just about everything you'd want to know about that bland little block, including the history and manufacture of tofu. It even tells you how to make it yourself. Well, I tried it and got perfectly fine tofu (and a heck of a lot of okara, the bean residue left from straining the soymilk.) I nearly destroyed the kitchen, but it was fun and I learned to appreciate going to the store and buying a refrigerated pack.
If you don't care to try tofu in its Japanese guise (they even eat it cold with a dash of soy sauce) then you can try scrambled tofu. This is a real God-send for people who mustn't eat eggs and who miss a good mushroom omelet.
And did you know there were so many kinds of tofu, from kinugoshi, which is custard-like and can be used to make a good pumpkin pie, to extra-firm, which can be barbecued with sauce (just the thing if you have a summer grill party and can't serve meat. Grill some eggplant, zucchini, corn and tofu instead.)
Not every recipe in this book is useful for everyone (yuba, or the dried skin of soymilk) sounds yummy but is not found outside of good Chinese groceries in urban centers. However, this book will give you new ideas to use tofu.
Soy: The perfect food :-).......2000-01-08
Last year I purchased The Book of Tofu, by William Shurtleff and Akiko Aoyagi. Half recipe source-book, half cultural anthropological look at the history of tofu-making in Asia (Did you know that tofu has been eaten in China for thousands of years? Tell that to Newsweek, who listed tofu as a fad that would die out in the new millenium!), it soon convinced me of the importance of soy in the human diet. This book is fabulously researched, has excellent recipes and TONS of interesting information. We learned about more uncommon types of tofu, like Yuba (bean curd skin). (We soon hunted some down at our local asian market, YUM!) We haven't yet attempted to make our own soy milk or tofu, but this book covers these topics in easy to follow, detailed directions. Read this book! Eat Tofu! Be Happy (and healthy)!
Tofu is good for you.......1999-02-19
This book is very comprehensive in detailing how to make soymilk and manufacture tofu at home. It is quite easy -- maybe a little time consuming for the modern American. But, the benefits of soy far outweigh the two hours (or less) that it takes to make soymilk. My wife has been cleansed of her hayfever and allergies since we have completely switched to drinking only soymilk. Our children are thriving. Simply put: soy products are good for the heart, mind, and soul.

Book Description
It's been the super food of the East for at least two millennia, and it's finally made a name for itself here. No matter what dish it's added to--from soups to desserts--tofu makes the meal healthier and better. On its own, this soft, white beancurd has virtually no taste, but it has a remarkable ability to "drink up' the flavors and seasonings it's marinated in. Plus, tofu comes in different textures, so it's a perfect substitute for meat, fish, cheese, or eggs. You've probably heard of its almost miraculous ability to lower the risks for heart disease, cancer, and according to the newest research, Alzheimer's, but you may not have known how to prepare it. This comprehensive, all-vegetarian tofu cookbook celebrates tofu's versatility 350 ways, with easy-to-follow recipes that will expand your horizons and tickle your tastebuds: Tofruitty smoothies, Tofu huevos rancheros, banana bread, mock tuna salad, tofu "crab" cakes, tropical cheesecake escape, and even pecan pie!

Tofu Is Not Just for Vegetarians!.......2007-08-24
The wonderful recipes in this cookbook would stand alone to please a cook who is looking for healthy and delicious meals.
But what I love about it most is the amount of recipes that are dairy free. Anyone who needs to cut down or eliminate dairy from their diets (for health and allergy reasons) will find it a GREAT resource.
I admit, the first recipe I tried was the ice cream. I was pleasantly suprized how deliciuos it was. Especially the chocolate version!
To think of being able to ENJOY ice cream (in any creative flavors I choose) without the consequences is a dream!
The dairy free recipes and meals in this cookbook have brought back the joy of cooking again!
Thank Heavens for this cookbook!!
Tofu for people who don't like tofu.......2007-01-20
The title of my review basically summarizes my overall impression of this book. The recipies included may cover everything from breakfast to dinner to desserts and drinks, but the overall slant is towards finding ways to hide tofu in recipies or substitute it for other things, instead of recipies that put tofu in the spotlight and put it to best use. Their are lots of "mock"-style recipies ("Mock Egg Salad", "Tastes Just Like Chicken" Burgers), but a surprising lack of, say, traditional Asian-style recipies that have incorporated tofu for centuries without seeing it as a substitute for something else. It is also strictly vegetarian--a fact not mentioned anywhere in the title or description on the back of the book. That may be what some readers want, but tofu can combine in interesting ways with meat and chicken and you won't find any such recipies here.
Nutritional information is also lacking, a strange omission for a book that otherwise is so focused on health and wellness issues. I also found some recipies I tried very bland and needed to add or adjust the seasoning in order to make it palatable.
I would not especially recommend this book.
Why was this piece of trash called into existence?.......2006-05-25
I do not believe I have ever read a worse vegetarian cookbook. The authors seem to not actually like tofu as a food. All of these recipes are centered on hiding tofu in otherwise decent recipes. Among the greater atrocities: Tofu Cole slaw (make Cole slaw, throw in some tofu), tofu pecan pie (note to the authors: the women of Georgia will soon be haunting you), and "Greek Salad with 'Insteada Feta'" (because feta doesn't have a strong and distinctive flavor or anything). The basic premise of this book seems to be that tofu is disgusting stuff that must be disguised and that it has no flavor and no presence in a dish such that one can throw in tofu in anything and it stays the same. There are in fact many, many recipes that utilize tofu as an important and tasty ingredient, such as "Fried Bean Curd and Mushrooms" from Madhur Jafferey's World Vegetarian. The cuisine's of China and Japan, especially the subset of monastery cooking, are rife with delicious tofu dishes; in fact the cuisines of much of the world are rife with delicious and nutritious vegetarian cuisine such that one could live their entire lives are an incredibly healthy vegetarians without every touching tofu or mock meat (as many Indian vegetarians have for centuries). So, if you don't like tofu, just don't eat it, its fine. If you are looking for better vegetarian cookbooks, try Madhur Jafferey's World Vegetarian, the Mediterranean Vegan Kitchen, or Real Vegetarian Thai, just to name a few. Give this steaming pile of tofu [...].
Not Worth It.......2006-03-14
I do not recommend this cookbook at all. It has a lot of colorful photos and an appealing layout, but like another reviewer stated, there is no nutritional information. Another problem with this cookbook is that the authors stole many of their recipes from another far superior book, "Tofu Cookery" by Louise Hagler, which was published years earlier. Here are some recipes that were directly lifted from another person's work: Chinese Sweet and Sour Balls, Zucchini Frittata, Russian Dressing, To-Foo Yung, Tofu "Crab"cakes, Tofu Falafels, Frozen Peanut Butter Pie, and Chocolate-Almond Pie just to name a few! There are so many more that they copied, and I almost wonder if that is why there is no nutritional information for any recipes. They didn't even bother to test the recipes, but instead spent their time and money on an impressive layout all the while copying someone else's work. I realize there are many cookbooks published and not all recipes can be original, but this one in particular is bothersome since it appears the authors were lazy and dishonest. One recipe after another is identical to recipes included in a book published almost 20 years earlier.
Just wasn't for us..........2006-01-07
I had a Tofu cookbook that I got from Sunset years and years ago that was far superior to this book. The main issue we have is that recipes are really not something we would eat normally. Plus, there is no nutritional information for any recipe and, because of some dietary restrictions, we really needed to know fat and sodium content. I don't think this is a *bad* book - just don't think it is the right book for us!
Customer Reviews:
Complete in all ways.......2004-06-19
If you are interested in going vegetarian, or just want to add more meatless meals to your diet, this book is for you. It explains in great detail everything you might want to know about both tofu and miso, including how to make the various product yourself from scratch. This is especially helpful if you live in an area where these products are not comercially available. Many, many recipes are also included. The only thing that could make this book better would be pictures of the dishes, but, as this is a HUGE book to start with, I don't know how they could fit them in.

Not all vegetarian/ good resource book.......2000-04-15
I have witheld 2 stars from this book for a couple of reasons. One being that the book leaves something to be desired, artistically, and many of the recipes are unusual, not making it a good starter book for those trying to assimilate soy products into the Standard American diet. It also contains no nutritional information for the recipes, leaving one to wonder about fat content and the like. I do, however, give this book 3 starts for a number of reasons. None of the ingredient lists are very long. The directions are clear and easy to follow and many of the recipes are worth trying. The first appx. 1/3 of the book is a good resource on soy itself and the answers the question, "What is tofu?" If one were so inclined, there are sufficient directions to try making it yourself. The print size is easy to read and doesn't leave you squinting while trying to discifer a list of ingredients. Some of the recipes are: Potato salad; Tofu waldorf salad; Herbed tofu cubes; Miso-tahini sandwich spread; Clear soup with tofu and watercress; Toifu Italiano; Tofu parmigiana; Tofu, pasta and olives; Chili; Stuffed tomatoes; Thai pumpkin and tofu; Marinated, baked tofu; Broiled tofu with walnut-miso topping; Spanish rice; Tofu balls with sweet/sour sauce; French Country stew; Tofu polenta; Tofu tarts; Hot tofu sandwich; Fruit crepes; Tofu in black bean sauce; Pineapple pie; Strawberry-kiwi cheesecake; Tropical cheesecake and Indian pudding.
This book does contain some lovely drawings, but to photographs.

The vegan and the carnivore .......2005-10-24
A present-day Texas school district has a troublemaker on its hands. Fredrika Murchison-Kowalski, or Freddie for short, is a vegan and believes strongly in liberating animals, but she goes too far when she nearly burns down the school's football stadium trying to liberate the bull mascot. She is quickly shipped back to her native Chicago where she must live with her grandfather and her cousin Hans-Peter. They live in a traditional Eastern European neighborhood with lots of sausage, pets, and fur. On top of that her grandfather, or Opa, owns a deli/butcher shop where Freddie is forced to work. She is re-admitted into the prestigious Peshtigo School of Chicago. Her cousin desperately wants to get into the school because of its wonderful paleontology program. The vegan and the carnivore must learn to live in harmony to achieve both their goals.
The book was good and it presented two good arguments. I couldn't decide which I agreed with since I am a vegetarian but I am not a vegan. I also saw the culture involved with the meats eaten by the Polish. The book was written in a light, moving style and it did not dwell on any one thing for too long. I enjoyed the two points of view of both characters and some of the hilarity of Freddie's activism. It was a bit simple and not really too developed but it contained some really funny parts and some very true arguments. If you enjoy both giggles and gasping, you'll like this book. From being chased by bees to the emancipation of frogs to an accidental severing, this book certainly earns a `funny mark'.
