Book Description
Eva Hesse (1936--1970) was a highly experimental artist who continually challenged the conventions of her time. For Hesse, drawing played a unique role, providing the nexus between her works in all media. Eva Hesse Drawing is the first book to explore her drawing process, following her work from drawing to painting and sculpture, and always back to drawing. The book features important, recently rediscovered “working drawings,” providing an intimate look at Hesse’s everyday practice and methodology.
An accomplished draftswoman, Hesse began to develop her wandering, tentative line while studying at Yale University in the late 1950s. Her early 1960s works on paper engaged with visual vocabularies from geometry to biomorphic abstraction. In 1965, Hesse combined her tactile sensibility for materials with her stringlike line to achieve a breakthrough: her astonishing reliefs, which began to bridge the space between two and three dimensions. Balancing the disembodiment of line with its intensified materialization, Hesse went on to develop one of the most innovative oeuvres of the twentieth century, anticipating the hybridization of media and crossing borderlines linking one impossible space to another.

Book Description
Visual art in the period following World War II witnessed landmark transformations. Today, drawing provides a powerful and vigorous device for reexamining the art of that period, and for renewing appreciation of the extraordinary achievements of well-known artists--and for discovering others. Even though the art of these years saw radical departures and shifts, drawing, which is among the most traditional of media, played a crucial and consistent role in the work of a great majority of the most significant artists. Drawing from the Modern, 1945-1975, surveys the drawing of the period through the unparalleled holdings of the drawings collection of The Museum of Modern Art. The postwar period saw the development of Abstract Expressionism in New York, followed by Pop art, Minimal art, and Conceptual art, and the Museum's collection has exceptional strength in these areas. Abstract drawings by Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, and Barnett Newman open this volume, followed by works by such key figures as Jasper Johns, Ellsworth Kelly, and Cy Twombly. Next, drawings by Roy Lichtenstein, Claes Oldenburg, and Andy Warhol signal the arrival of a new figurative art at the forefront of creativity. But reductive and abstract art kept pace, and the Museum's collection offers a breathtaking array of drawings by Carl Andre, Dan Flavin, Eva Hesse, Sol LeWitt, Brice Marden, Agnes Martin, Richard Serra, and numerous others. What constitutes "progress" in art is questioned today, and it is no longer possible to see the development of art as a straight line, with synchronicity among places and geographies. But drawing, by its very nature, encourages established understandings to be examined and accepted values to be reappraised. Many of the artists represented here defy easy categorization, including Lee Bontecou, Louise Bourgeois, Vija Celmins, Bruce Conner, Ray Johnson, Jim Nutt, and Myron Stout. The resurgence of European art is represented by drawings by Georg Baselitz, Joseph Beuys, Marcel Broodthaers, Piero Manzoni, Henri Michaux, Mario Merz, and Sigmar Polke, among others. A number the most important artists working in Latin America in the postwar period are also represented, including Jorge de la Vega, Gego, LeAn Ferrari, Halio Oiticica, and Mira Schendel. While neither the collection nor this volume is encyclopedic, the spirit and achievements of postwar art are distilled and amply celebrated here.

should have been better.......2007-09-13
I purchased book 1 & 2 from Amazon. The illustrations are far too small to be a professionally represented art book from MOMA I've decided to save my money rather than pay out for the 3rd edition. It sounds a good buy from its description but I don't consider this trilogy to be very satisfactory.
Don't waste your money!.......2007-08-09
This is not a good artbook. The images are way too small to be satisfying. This book could have been great, but falls way short of its potential. Don't buy it, you will be disappointed.
DRAWING from the MODERN.......2006-12-27
DRAWING from the MODERN is the first of a three part series published by MOMA as catalogue to accompany the chronologically arranged exhibitions of their drawing collection; in part, celebration of the seventy fifth anniversary of the founding of the Museum.
This first book looks at the late nineteenth century through the beginning of the twentieth. Care and preservation of these drawings dictate that they are displayed infrequently, paper being a delicate medium, subject to fading, discoloration and brittleness. The publication of this series then allows us to have at hand a history of drawings seldom seen, and a visual education demonstrating how problems of that era both evolved and worked themselves out.
The introduction by Jodi Hauptman is broad and well worth reading. Aside from her entertaining "end of art" stories, she addresses artists and process leading to the dissolution of prevalent notions: relationship of "mark" to "ground", took new form; spatial notions of an orderly page, questioned; the element of chance, explored as process; the ego relationship of an artist to work, dissolving. New imagery happened: collage, abstraction, grids, enhanced emotions, metaphors of feeling, the sublime re-imaged. New subjects explored brutalities of war, notions of "city", identity, the spiritual, and the abstract.
As perhaps with all process of art, the uncertainty of change brought forth much that is new. The 139 plates of drawings both demonstrate and give testimony by leading artists of the time to new era in process. Drawing as subject matter is fascinating. To be expected, the book is well printed. Of course, what is book one without book two and three?

Check Out the New Edition.......2006-04-14
Dear Readers: There is a new edition of this book (3rd Edition) available that covers the latest versions of Avid's software, including Xpress Pro HD. It also includes information about editing 24p, HD, HDV projects. I hope you find it useful. Best, Sam Kauffmann
best introduction.......2006-02-12
I was a Media 100 editor for many years and my company switched to the Avid on Jan. 9, 2006. I didn't take any training but, I bought a training DVD set and 3 books. This book was the best, by far. It is presented by an editor who explains what you really need to know to get going and how to work around maintaining sync, etc. It was great. In less than a month, I completed 2 projects without a problem. I'm using Media Composer Adrenaline on a Mac.
:)
samples don't work with Avid Xpress DV 4.6.......2006-01-13
The book jacket says that the book's DVD-ROM will work with Xpress DV 3.0 and higher. The .omf video files were compressed at 20:1 using Media Composer and Xpress DV 4.6 does not support the 20:1 resolution, meaning that the sample video files cannot be imported and used in Xpress DV 4.6. This is a shame, because it seems like a good book and this is not really a problem that the author could have foreseen. Unfortunately, most places won't let you return a book after the DVD has been opened, so let this be a warning, FYI. Hopefully the upcoming 3rd edition will fix this problem.
One of the best books on Avid.......2006-01-09
This book was a part of our school curriculum for a class on Avid Editing. I didn't realise the value of this book while in School, but now sitting on the Avid a year and half later I wouldn't have survived without this book. I also went and looked up some other books but what's great about this one is that the information is very well organized and if you're on the Avid and get stuck... referencing stuff is really fast, as it's all laid out in simple step by step instructions. For any level editor, pro or novice, I would highly reccomend this book.
Simply Incredible!.......2005-07-13
I can not "truly" put into words how great this book is written. Sam Kauffmann not only shows you the tools in the AVID system, but with "every" tool gives you the reason and purpose for it. Unlike other manuals, you really feel that you have grasped the concepts for each chapter before moving on. I am working efficiently, intelligently, and creatively in Avid because of this book. Sam Kauffmann is a professor at Boston University, and after reading this book I can honestly say if I were a student at BU...I would never skip his class! Simple Incredible!
Book Description
Theodora Goss' first major short story collection showcases such stories as "The Rose in Twelve Petals," "The Rapid Advance of Sorrow," "Lily, With Clouds," "In the Forest of Forgetting," "Sleeping With Bears" and many more. Also includes an introduction by Terri Windling and cover by Virginia Lee.
Customer Reviews:
Superior Fantastic Fiction.......2006-11-09
An excellent collection of stories, all of them little masterpieces of fantastic fiction in the tradition of European storytellers. Most stories belong to a deep tradition of which Kafka was a potent precursor. Atmosphere is certainly Goss's strong point, and utterly well-drawn characters. I'm looking for more of her fiction.
A superb collection.......2006-10-24
This is one of the most delightful short-story collections I've ever read. Goss's prose is immaculate; there are hints of Angela Carter here, but also of Virgina Woolf. She handles very old themes (Gothic, yes, but also older) with a very rare combination of control and freshness. It's an astonishing collection, and I can't wait to see more from her. Novels are my true love, but I'm happy to make an exception -- and a permanent place on my bookshelf -- for this book.
Postmodern gothic fairytales.......2006-09-19
These delicately crafted, literary fantasies draw from Victorian morality stories and fairytales. The language is spare and considered, the tone dry spiked with mordant humor. Goss discreetly and elegantly updates the gothic tale for postmodern times. Her "Emily Gray" stories concern a governess who grants children's deepest wishes, at a terrible price. Three of the Emily Gray tales are here. The title story turns a breast cancer patient's life into a magical fable. Other stories take place in Budapest, and have a flavor of Central European magical realism ("The Rapid Advance of Sorrow"), while "A Rose in Twelve Petals" fractures Sleeping Beauty into twelve different view points, including that of the spinning wheel that pricks the princess. Goss's stories have dark themes, but she is too graceful a writer to be considered gothic in the classic sense. Her painterly, humorous characters come alive, and her fantastical ideas are grounded in her character's pysches.
Customer Reviews:
Who would have ever thought?.......2003-07-10
Rosie no-name got my eye had the library. I wanted my nine year old to check it out instead I did. Imagine a 35 year old reading a 12 year-old book. I read it aloud to my husband and kids. It was easy to read and funny they kept referring to Rosie dad as theirs and the teasing in the begining between the sisters in the story that was told was also realistic. We found ourselves transported thru time with Rosie and enjoyed her adventure. It was like being part of the excitement. I belief anyone who still likes adventure would like this book because it is easy to read and quite funny in some places.

Book Description
A hilarious (and oh-so-true) handbook on what a woman can really look forward to during the longest--if not the weirdest--nine months of her life.
Customer Reviews:
I tried to like it...........2004-09-28
I really did try to like this. I love humorous pregnancy books. I tend to scare myself silly with "What to Expect When You're Expecting" and googling various pregnancy complications. I need humorous pregnancy books to balance it. I loved "Belly Laughs" and "The Girlfriend's Guide to Pregnancy". I hoped "You're Pregnant!" would be the same. It had a few funny moments in it, but I had a hard time keeping interested. It's not a bad read, but I will admit I'm glad I checked it out of the library. I had enough trouble finishing it the first time. I don't think I'd read it again.
Don't read this while eating cereal!.......2002-07-23
The funniest pregnancy book ever written. Kathryn Hammer's a real hoot! I laughed out loud all the way through this book. Just a little snippet to prove my point: "A boarder, a complete stranger has set up housekeeping inside your body, occupying an internal organ that until now had rarely come up in polite conversation." If you need break from all those pregnancy manuals that sound all the same, this is the book for you.
Not at all Informative.......2002-04-06
When the title says, "You're Pregnant: A Guide for the Longest Nine Months of Your Life," I am looking for pertinent information on pregnancy and the headaches that go along with it. This book is not at all informative, and actually gives me a headache when I read it for more than 10 minutes at a sitting. This is a satirical look at pregnancy, and offers no help in answering questions or figuring out solutions to common pregnancy problems. A total waste of money.
Do NOT skip this book!.......2002-03-21
From the introduction, you can obviously tell this is going to be a book to help bring back some HUMOR to your pregnancy! When you've had enough of the 'miracle of birth' books and you want something that will agree with you that pregnancy is WEIRD, this is for you. It's absolutely the funniest book I've read and the humor is not corny! Maybe if you're totally uptight about your pregnancy, this wouldn't be funny, but to me it was and to a lot of people I've shared it with online. Please get this book!
Great comic relief for the mom-to-be!!.......1999-09-03
I received this book from a friend in about the 5th month of my first pregnancy. It was the perfect comic relief especially for the first time mom who tends to be so serious and over analitical. It gives advice in such an over the top funny way, such as "...if you have to be told not to play with cat poop, maybe you shouldn't be a mother" kind of stuff. It is almost a spoof on all the pregnancy advice you get and try to digest from everyone!! Really great comic relief!
