Book Description

If you love watching Florida birds and other wildlife, searching for nests, and identifying trees and plants, here is a new way to enjoy it all — by learning to draw what you see. Whether you are embellishing field notes or just enjoying a new skill, you will appreciate the easy directions in this guide to drawing Florida's diverse wildlife and plants. This step-by-step manual begins with a complete guide to the simple tools and materials you'll need. The author then shows you how to begin your drawing by learning to see the basic shapes and proportions of wildlife. From preliminary outline to finished drawing, you will find clear directions throughout, including clues about how to draw complex features such as feathers and nests. Each section includes a partially finished drawing for you to complete right in the book, if you wish. Here is everything you need to create accurate drawings of the many types of Florida birds, as well as the reptiles, amphibians, and mammals that call Florida home. Some representative plants, trees, and landscapes are also included.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Ideal for Beginners.......2005-03-16

Most of the birds and animals get two pages showing the drawing process for each. On those two pages, the drawing goes through 5 to 9 steps detailing how to draw the different textures of the animal using hatching, cross-hatching, line and stippling. The last sections include drawing flowers (arrowhead, pond lily, etc.), trees (melaleuca, pine tree) and landscapes (sloughs and Everglades).
Pluses of the book: directions are clear, each example ends with an outline figure for the reader to practice on, wide variety of animals (songbirds, waterbirds, raptors, reptiles, mammels, even birds' nests).
Drawbacks: finished work is somewhat stiff.
Overall, it's a useful book to get someone started drawing wildlife.

5 out of 5 stars Great instructional book.......2004-03-10

This is a great instructional book for the aspiring Naturalist or journal keeper. The instruction is well written and geared for the beginner to advance intermediate skill level but may provide some good tips for the more advanced artist. As the title states, this book provides many examples of the more common animals that can be found (for a while anyway) in Florida. I was able to advance my ability quite a bit by using this book in my nature journaling and sketch sessions. If you take your time and stick to it, this book should provide great instruction.

2 out of 5 stars Not Worth It..........2006-09-09

This cheaply made book may be able to claim that it contains all of Sorayama's images, but the reproduction quality is poor, on cheap paper, and many of the best images are split down the middle by the spine/seam of the book, making them look even cheaper than this book already makes them appear. Not worth your money, unless all you want are tiny lousy quality images on tissue paper. Sorayama deserves better.

4 out of 5 stars sorayama:complete works small but nice.......2005-10-03

all tough the size of the book is rather small there is a large and veried collection of works which is what i was looking for so no complants-good color and clear prints

5 out of 5 stars A must have for sorayama fans.......2004-03-12

If you are a fan of sorayama, this book is for you. If you are a newcomer, go with a larger book (Naga, torquere, Gynoids). The dimensions on this book are rather small, and the paper is not ideal. The overwhelming amount of artwork does, however, make up for these shortcomings

4 out of 5 stars A Sorayama celebration........2003-10-10

I think the work of Hajime Sorayama is unique in the world of erotic graphic artists so I was very pleased to get this book. There are several drawbacks though, the book is not the complete works, being a perfect-bound thick paperback it's not possible to open it fully (without breaking the binding) the paper is fairly course but it does support the 150 dpi the images are printed in, there are no page numbers and no dates on any of the artwork but despite all that it is still a fantastic book.

To be able to see hundreds of examples of sexy robots, pin-ups and some really super examples of Sorayama's advertising work in this thick paperback will have to do until the definitive coffee-table book gets published. BTW if you are in a bookshop you can't miss it because it has an incredibly seductive, highly glossy cover mosaic showing details from thirty-one Sorayama paintings.

4 out of 5 stars A Lot to See.......2003-08-04

This really does show a lot of Sorayama's work. From the sexy robots to the life-like pin-ups to the surreal to the over-the-top fetishes. This book shows them all.
Sorayama is a masterful artist and an extremely talented airbrush artist. The majority of his work is sexually graphic and some are simply disturbing, but if you want to see some incredibly realistic art, you can appreciate this book. In fact, this book even includes some sketches he's done of buildings, planes, etc. The man is truly an artist. Still, keep in mind that most of the works in this book are graphic in nature.
The good news: this book has page after page after page of his art - measuring almost 1.5 inches thick. The bad news: The book is only 6 inches by 8.25 inches - very small for an art book. It also places a number of paintings on one page - making them too small to really admire his detail. Also, the book is perfect bound - which makes the paintings that cover a double-page spread difficult to see.
I still think this is a great book to get a good sampling of Sorayama's work. There's a lot of his work to see in these pages. Some of it is erotic, some of it is playful, some of it is disturbing, and some of it is just amazing technically. Larger format and better layout design would be the two things that would improve this book.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing........2002-02-19

This artist is beyond discription, and this collection is just a slice of the Sorayama pie. Mostly consisting of high quality erotica, there is also a lot of fantasy illustrations, and work he's done for ads(Fed Ex, Delta, Sekio). The varity of the work is just amazing. I love ths book!!!!

1 out of 5 stars a mere catalog?one star is too much........2000-12-14

don't waste your money on a cheap paper with awful reproduction of colors.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent book, too small though........2000-09-06

Great compilation of work however, the size of the book does not do any justice to the art.

5 out of 5 stars Hyper Realism Cheesecake.......2000-01-05

Sorayama's technical mastery of the colors, airbrush are overwhelming. His attention to detail is mind boggling, the subject of the pages is from American West to Chrome Fem-bots, to fetish renderings of bondage, piercing, mermaids, body builders, et al. Not for the prissy or Victorians. Subject matter aside, the quality of his work is flawless. There is a collection of his advertizing copy along with is art. His client list is impressive. However this book's paper quality leaves something to be desired along with the sizes of the pages. I consider this a sampler before I invested in the larger glossy coffee table sized books. Check out the Betty Page, and Ms. Monroe pages. Ichiban! , Arigato Sorayama-sama.

5 out of 5 stars Erotic Art at its Best.......1999-12-22

Wow, this book is a marvelous summary of all of Sorayama's work. Though a little small in this book, his work is revolutionary. Comparable to Olivia, his lifelike work is just superb. Be sure to check it out.

"Of all the many forms of Jewish-Japanese poetry, the Jewish haiku is perhaps the most sublimely beautiful," begins the foreword to the wickedly funny and tirelessly bizarre Haikus for Jews by David M. Bader. If you can't abide a little fun with stereotypes, read another book. But if you don't mind a little ribbing, take a look at the following haiku, which gives only a mild taste of the yummy-as-lox treats gathered in this collection: "Jewish voodoo tip -- / mention an acting career, / then watch for chest pain." And if you liked that, you'll love this: "Lightbulb out again -- / how many of us must meet / to change it this time?" And they just keep getting better.

      Book Description

Why is this haiku book different from all other haiku books?

For centuries, the Japanese haiku has been one of the world's most dazzling poetic forms. In just three short lines, it captures the sublime beauty of nature--the croak of the bullfrog, the buzzing of the dragonfly, the shriek of the cicada, the scream of the cormorant. Now, with Haikus for Jews, there is finally a collection that celebrates the many advantages of staying indoors.

Inspired by ancient Zen teachings and timeless Jewish noodging, this masterful work is filled with insights that will make you exclaim, "Ah!" or at least "Oy!" Whether you are Jewish or you simply enjoy a good kosher haiku, these chai-kus (so called because of their high chutzpah content) are certain to amuse. What's more, with each poem limited to seventeen syllables, Haikus for Jews is perfect for people in a hurry. Find out why God has made these The Chosen Haikus.

      4 out of 5 stars Hilarious!.......2006-10-20

This little book is quite a find. While I'm not jewish, I was raised by a Catholic mother, so I think I can relate. These short poems will definitely bring a smile to your face.

4 out of 5 stars You Think For No Reason I Read These? No! I Read These To Grow Wiser, Seventeen-Syllables-At-A-Time........2006-10-16

In some ways even funnier than Bader's other mixture of Judaism and (flimsy) Zen wisdom. These haiku do often offer nuggets of wisdom and nearly always they do it with a little joke wrapped up inside. You can read this book in about thirty minutes, contemplation time included, so why you still sitting there?

5 out of 5 stars HAIKU FOR JEWS & BABY HAIKU.......2006-07-15

I have been a student for Haiku for a long time and now am teaching at workshops about the Haiku form, but most importantly, the Haiku spirit. I came from Japan and I am very flattered to notice how popular Haiku is in the Western contemporary literary circle. While Haiku is a form of Japanese poetry that states in 3 lines of 5-7-5 syllables a spiritaul insight, I tend not to bother with the syllables (because Japanese syllables and English syllables are totally different) but focus on whether the poet has captured the Haiku spirit- which means Zen. As far as I am concerned, David M. Bader's Haiku for Jews has got it! You can tell within 2 poems. And the rest is just a truly enjoyable read. The other great poetess that I think also got the essence of the Haiku spirit is Lily Wang. Her newest work, BABY HAIKU, contains many moving Haiku. Though the subjects are totally different, their powerful applications of the Haiku form are impressive. I am using them both for my Haiku classes.

      5 out of 5 stars A great laugh........2006-03-29

I had first gotten an e-mail with these Jewish-themed haikus a couple of years ago and I was on the floor laughing. After I passed the e-mail on to everyone I knew would appreciate it, I needed more. I searched online, found out about David Bader and bought his book. Just about every page elicits a laugh-out-loud chuckle. I started bringing the book with me to family functions and to friend's dinner parties and then ended up just buying it in handfuls to give as gifts to friends.
Just a few of the haikus are a little challenging (e.g., he mentiones "Leonard's of Great Neck" which was THE place in NY to be bar-mitzvahed in the 70s) but even my goyisha husband and friends think the book is LOL funny. In fact, one of my friend's son recited the bar-mitzvah haiku(mentioned in another review here) during his "thank you Mom and Dad" essay at his own bar-mitzvah and even the rabbi laughed!

      Book Description

After finishing school in New York, Rabbi Harvey traveled west in search of adventure and, hopefully, work as a rabbi. His journey took him to Elk Spring, Colorado, a small town in the Rocky Mountains. When he managed to outwit the ruthless gang that had been ruling Elk Spring, the people invited Harvey to stay on as the town's rabbi. In Harvey's adventures in Elk Spring, he settles disputes, tricks criminals into confessing, and offers unsolicited bits of Talmudic insight and Hasidic wisdom. Each story presents Harvey with a unique challenge--from convincing a child that he is not actually a chicken, to retrieving stolen money from a sweet-faced bubbe gone bad. Like any good collection of Jewish folktales, these stories contain layers of humor and timeless wisdom that will entertain, teach and, especially, make you laugh.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous, Fun and Even a Little Educational.......2007-08-18

I loved, loved, loved this "graphic novel" (not so much a novel but a collection of stories). The Adventures of Rabbi Harvey is a collection of Jewish folktales told as Western adventures featuring Rabbi Harvey of Elk Spring Colorado. Rabbi Harvey's stories involve his own travels and encounters with double-crossers and odd types like the boy who insists he is a chicken, as well as moral dilemmas brought to him for his rabbinical ruling. Since I'd read/heard some of the stories previously, I am assuming that many of them are based on traditional Jewish folktales but some seem to be original stories. It's a nice mix and all are deftly and humorously illustrated, with funny asides from the rabbi, onlookers, even the occasional animal or inanimate object (when a traveling merchant attempts to cheat a woman out of a bag of money he is supposed to deliver, throwing only one coin on the table, the head on the coin wonders, "Why am I not surprised?"

There is a distinct Jewish flavor to the tales, set in a neverland of all-Jewish Western towns, and I definitely recommend this book for older kids and adults alike who want a fun and easily digested book of Jewish stories. But even for non-Jews, this is an entertaining book of stories with moral points of view, told with a sense of humor. HIghly recommended, this one is a keeper for me and I sincerely hope there are more Rabbi Harvey books to come.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful book for people of all religions.......2007-07-08

I loved reading this book. It was funny, engaging, and worth owning. The cover caught my eye, and I love how the novel is drawn. Very cute!

4 out of 5 stars Rabbi Harvey, the Western Chacham.......2007-01-04

The stories here serve up some of the best short (and very short) "wisdom stories" of the Yiddish tradition, presented in the unfamiliar environs of the Old West of the USA. Arguments are settled, bullies get their comeuppance, and the good guys (the ones with the black yarmulkes) win. A great intro to Jewish short stories and novels, and much of it is very funny (even if you can see the punchline coming from 200 cubits.) Get your kids (and the kid in you) interested in Jewish Literature in a painless fashion.

      5 out of 5 stars A hilarious read!.......2006-11-17

This book is really great. It is perfect for kids and adults, and you don't need to know anything about religion to enjoy it. When I started reading the book, I couldn't put it down until I was finished. The stories are simple, straightforward, and funny. I especially love the drawings. Many of the hidden details in the pictures made me laugh out loud.

5 out of 5 stars Fun for all ages (and belief systems).......2006-11-09

A collection of deliciously odd, stylized drawings, dry wit and perfectly paced mini-morality tales that I thoroughly enjoyed. Rabbi Harvey starts out an undistinguished neophyte and ends up taming the West with wisecracks and Talmudic wisdom, even as he's forced to think on his feet to cheat death. I'm not Jewish, but I loved this book and can't wait until my daughter is old enough to meet Rabbi Harvey.

4 out of 5 stars Too skimpy for its big title .......2004-11-16

This is a very small collection of sayings. It does not seem to have any theme. Most of the sayings are from modern ' celebrities' and not especially from those versed in Jewish knowledge and learning. The sayings themselves are in many instances not outstanding. Nonetheless there are some words here which can bring a smile or nod of welcome recognition.
A few examples : "History teaches us that men and nations behave wisely after they have exhausted all other alternatives. Abba Eban"
"The girl who can't dance says the band can't play" Yiddish proverb
" What I am waiting for is a movie about beautiful quintuplets who love the same man." Harry Kurnitz
" Life the way it really is-is a battle not between Bad and Good but between Bad and Worse. Joseph Brodsky
" A Jew is someone who ties, who links his or her destiny to the Jewish people. Period. This is a Jew. I not enter religious affairs. Elie Weisel

      3 out of 5 stars uneven.......2006-07-17

This book is composed of hundreds of stories and antecdotes - some apparently about Rabbi Wein, some apparently by him, and some of indeterminate origin. (Unfortunately the author fails to tell readers which is which).

I found some of these stories fairly appealing- others not so appealing. On balance I think this is a fine book for a child, or for someone of an extremely traditional bent. I suspect, however, that readers of a modern Orthodox or non-Orthodox bent are less likely to be consistently impressed.

      5 out of 5 stars A delightful collection .......2005-01-14

This is a delightful collection of sayings and small writings of one of the great Torah teachers of our generation Rabbi Berel Wein. Rabbi Wein is a rare mixture of great Torah scholar and man - of- the world. His commonsensical no-nonsensical Torah based teaching is always instructive and often amusing.
      A highly recommended work.
