If You Love O'Keeffe...........2000-07-08
If you love New Mexico, O'Keeffe or just fine photography this is a book for you. This intimate look at O'Keeffe through text and photos gives us a better look at this complicated artist. The photos by M. Wood are outstanding, as he takes you through how he contacted Ms. O'Keeffe, through the subtle games she and her gardener played. It was easy to see the love of the land that not only Ms. O'Keeffe had, but the same feeling seems to to just pop out of each photogrpah that Mr. Woods shows us.

Great beauty.......2000-08-21
What an exquisite book! Not only is it an informative and interesting read, but it made me want to move to Taos and take up oil painting! In fact, I'm signing up for painting classes this week! The plates are magnificent, and the subject matter, Taos, and Taos Pueblo Indians, are filled with beauty and dignity from a time gone by. Highly recommended for all lovers of the Southwest, native cultures, and landscape and oil paintings.

Artists' Studios.......2005-04-11
As an artist I love books on artists studios, seeing what "artist plunder" they have or do not have, clues as to how they make their way with their work.
New Mexico Artists At Work is a work of love. From the beautiful color photographs to the commentaries to the wide varity of lifestyles. There is a long history of artists who have chosen Northern New Mexico as a place to live and work and This book shows why artists continue to settle here.
Artists studios come in so many sizes and shapes, and artists working styles range from the perfectionists to the life in progress. There is often an element of play, elements spread
out over the floor. A studio is as intimate as one's bedroom or library, where the artist is bringing the internal to the outside.
Agnes Martin, New Mexico's most famous artist after Georgia O'Keefe, lived a monastic life in her studio. Susan Rothenburg's studio reflects her complex personality, as does Paul Sarkisian, who now works on monumental paintings that become wall sculptures. Many of these artists became established in New York and then chose the open spaces of Northern New Mexico to make their homes and do their work.
This book is about modern color, the people who live and work with it, all the taste and style of New Mexico, it is about real lives of real people.

Book Description
The fourth title in New Mexico Magazine's Artist Series showcases the work of Roxanne Swentzell, one of the most intriguing and acclaimed contemporary sculptors in the Southwest. Roxanne was born in 1962, the daughter of Rina Swentzell, a potter, architect, writer, and scholar from Santa Clara Pueblo, and Ralph Swentzell, a New Jersey-born philosophy professor at St. John's College in Santa Fe.
For her last two years of high school Roxanne attended the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, where she was given the first exhibition of her clay figures. Later she studied at the Portland Museum Art School in Oregon. Today Roxanne's work, much of which is also produced in bronze limited editions, is collected internationally. It has earned numerous honors, including many first place and best of class awards at Santa Fe Indian Market and the Heard Museum Guild Indian Fair and Market. Her work is extensively exhibited in museums and galleries, and in 1997, Emergence of the Clowns was part of an exhibition of Native American sculpture at the White House.
In this generously illustrated art book, Santa Fe writer Gussie Fauntleroy explores with Roxanne the ideals and beliefs that underpin her work. Her sculptures of human figures capture beauty that is unspoiled by glamour and enhanced by dignity, self-awareness, and humor. Along with her Pueblo community, she cherishes memorythe continuum of the ancestral past with present and futurewhich nourishes the wisdom to look beyond contemporary pop-culture idolatry and choose a more fundamental humanity. Her figures exalt the small, ordinary, everyday choices we make that define our integrity and enable us to become extra-ordinary.
Roxanne's many admirers love her art for its simplicity, humanity, humor and superior craftsmanship. This book enables readers to enjoy Roxanne's artwork in the company of her quiet and observant spirit.
New Mexico Magazine Artist Series
Showcases the work of the New Mexico American Indian sculptor, and explores the ideals and beliefs that underpin her work.
Customer Reviews:
What a disappointment!!.......2007-09-28
I first read about this artist in New Mexico magazine, which had many pictures of her work in that and subsequent issues. Anyone considering this book should abandon that thought and order back issues of NM magazine featuring Roxanne Swentzell. The photos in the book are awful, limited and restrictive; some even appear defective in that at first it appeared to be a printing defect until closer examination revealed the problem was in the photo not in printing the book. I saw a broader range of exceptional photos and editorial assessment of her work in the NM magazines that are sorely lacking in this book.
Powerful Artist Deserved Better Writer.......2004-09-17
Roxanne Swentzell is a unique and powerful artist and the plates in this book are well done. This art deserved a much better writer. The author Fauntleroy has no background or expertise in Native American or Fine Art and her text has many factual errors and suffers from a lack of understanding of art and Native culture. It is also poorly written. Publishers should have hired a Native American author. There are many who would have had the ability to put this exciting young artist in the proper context.
Beautiful book.......2003-12-07
It is the first time I bought an art book on the spot in a book store. I had never heard of Roxanne Swentzell before, but was immediately fascinated by the beauty and expression of her clay figures. Her sculptures speak thousands words about the human soul. The pictures are remarkable and commentarie just what they need to be. A beautiful book that I am very happy to have around and show to my friends.
Amazon.com
The vast landscape of New Mexico won the heart of American artist Georgia O'Keeffe on her first visit there in 1917, and the open sky, parched earth, and bleached white bones she found there soon became the prominent subjects of her paintings. She granted John Loengard, a photographer for Life magazine, the rare opportunity to photograph her in her home at Ghost Ranch in 1966. Fifty of the black-and-white photographs he took that day fill this 79-page, small-format hardcover and form a classic record of a day in the life of an eminent yet elusive artist. Quotes by O'Keeffe about New Mexico and brief biographies of the painter and Loengard add extra dimension to the images. --A.C. Smith
Customer Reviews:
Excellent small version of the larger book!.......2001-01-19
Convenient size. You can take it with you when you travel to New Mexico and see the lands that inspired a truly remarkable woman. The black and white photographs and the simple design of the book would please Ms. Okeeffe, I feel. I have been to Ghost Ranch and it really is amazing to see some of the changes and similarities that the pictures present. The photographer John Loengard has produced a compelling insight into the private life of a very intriguing woman.

Book Description
The murals of the Saint Francis Auditorium of the Museum of Fine Arts, Santa Fe, New Mexico were dedicated in 1918 when the Museum of Fine Arts was the subject of great festivities held for the grand opening of the building, financed by private capital and State money. The murals themselves are in excellent condition and effectively grace the handsome auditorium. Their meaning is not obvious; in only three of them does Saint Francis appear. One inevitably wonders why the other subjects were selected; who made the decisions as to the subjects; who gave the commission and when; what artists did what for which pictures? What was the impact of the unexpected death of the principal artist before the murals were completed? These questions, but above all the meaning of the cycle of pictures, instigated the author's research and are responsible for clarifying Santa Fe's heritage of these extraordinary pictures.

Book Description
This classic ground-breaking volume--the first to consider Georgia O'Keeffe's works on paper--explores the medium of watercolor, charcoal, pencil, and pastel. O'Keeffe's earliest mature works, which led to her first New York exhibitions and initial acclaim, were works on paper. These works can be viewed in the larger context of O'Keeffe's career as an artist. They move from stylized, flat patterning of the early charcoals through the rhapsodic organic forms and fresh uses of color in the water colors to the tighter, more focused compositions of the later pastels, charcoals, and pencil drawings. Finally, the works on paper of the 1960s and 1970s are characterized by an extreme simplification and almost decorative flatness.
Customer Reviews:
minor works by a major artist.......2003-08-22
Art critic E.M. Benson is quoted in the introduction of this book saying "I never saw an O'Keeffe that reminded me of anything but O'Keeffe", and the pieces selected for this book, though most of them are minor, early works, are an indication of how her talent would develop, with her unique vision and terrific sense of color.
As is stated in Barbara Haskell's text, they "provide valuable insight into the origins of her vocabulary and basic approach to art".
The illustrations include eleven watercolors reproduced in black and white, from 1916-1934, a monotype from 1917, twentyfour color plates of watercolors from 1915-1922, and ten pieces from later years, mostly pastels and drawings, from 1925-1977.
With good quality paper and fine color reproduction in a semi-gloss finish, this is recommended for art students, as it is always interesting to see the promise of early works, and die-hard O'Keefe fans.

Book Description
New Mexico's first Franciscan priest, Fray Angélico Chávez (1910-1996) is known as a prolific historian, a literary and artistic figure, and an intellectual who played a vital role in Santa Fe's community of writers. The original essays collected here explore his wide-ranging cultural production: fiction, poetry, architectural restoration, journalism, genealogy, translation, and painting and drawing. Several essays discuss his approach to history, his archival research, and the way in which he re-centers ethnic identity in the prevalent Anglo-American master historical narrative. Others examine how he used fiction to bring history alive and combined visual and verbal elements to enhance his narratives. Two essays explore Chávez's profession as a friar. The collection ends with recollections by Thomas E. Chávez, historian and Fray Angélico's nephew.
Readers familar with Chávez's work as well as those learning about it for the first time will find much that surprises and informs in these essays.
A wonderful tribute to a great man.Rudolfo Anaya
UNM Press is to be congratulated on the publication of this long-awaited work on Fray Chávez. His fiction, his poetics, and his art work are fully detailed by a select group of both young and seasoned scholars.Rolando Hinojosa-Smith
A well-balanced summary of Fray Angélico Chávez's contributions to New Mexico literature and art.
Book Description
In the tradition of the ever-popular ARCHIE AMERICANA SERIES, Archie Comics is proud to present Hollywood's favorite new rock band in a tune-filled trade paperback volume that gets to the heart of the band's comic book roots! Consider it an episode of "VH1's Behind the Music" and a "JOSIE & the PUSSYCATS' Greatest Hits" CD rolled into one!
Customer Reviews:
All you wanted to know about Josie but were afraid to ask.......2005-03-19
Really great stuff about the evolution of a beloved cartoon series particularly of sixties and seventies children.
Those of us who know this stuff primarily from the 1970 Hanna-Barbera cartoon show are in for a few surprises. Josie was not originallly about a group of girl rockers, Alexandra was actually a witch (and NOT metaphorically speaking as she was in the TV show), Brother Alex was actually an egomaniac as opposed to his cowardly TV persona, etc.
We have here the comic book evolution of the Josie concept and even how it eventually got to be a television show. We have here how Valerie joined the band and even Hanna-Barbera themselves (in cartoon form) welcoming the girls to their cartoon show (of course, nothing is mentioned here about Hanna-Barbera originally balking at including the African-American character of Valerie, a sad chapter in cartoon history that fortunately ended with them doing the right thing and welcoming Valerie aboard).
Incidentally, the comic book stories, as evidenced in this collection, were usually more interesting than the cartoon tv series, which pretty much told the same story every time about "meddling kids" foiling the misdeeds of archvillans.
But anyway, buy this and get some pretty cool cartoon history.
Great Stuff!.......2004-05-24
I've always been a fan of both the JOSIE comic books (created and drawn by the one and only Dan DeCarlo) and the JOSIE cartoon. With this collection of classic stories from the entire run of the series, I get to relive my childhood in a way. Here's hoping that Archie Comics has mor coming on the way.
Best of.......2004-05-18
This is a nice collectors item that no doubt will be worth something someday. It's a collection of the "best" Josie and the Pussycat stories that have appeared in Archie Comics over the years. It features the very first story with Josie, Melody, Alexander, Cabot, Pepper and Albert titled "A Gym Dandy" from the comic "She's Josie" #12, February 1963. They also have little samples from when Alan M. and Alexandra first appeared in the stories, and when Valerie also first appeared. It goes through their music career as a band and their various friendships. It was nice to relive these stories. One of my all time favorite stories was not in here though, it was titled "The Ghostly Guardian" which appeared in the October 1990 issue of Betty & Veronica #21 Double Digest, where the gang visits an old mansion and discover a hidden passage, and a treasure. Overall this is a good paperback to own!

The lessons that dogs have to teach us about unconditional love and happiness are presented in this compilation of canine-inspired maxims. Infused with wit and humor, the Zen of dogs is captured in such inspirational bits of wisdom as, "For a dog there is only do or not do," and "Ask yourself, 'What would Lassie do?'" Masterfully designed with whimsical illustrations throughout, this collection of Taoist insights offers a refreshing perspective on living a happier and fuller life.
Customer Reviews:
true, and funny, too.......2007-04-06
I have read this book several times, and it never fails to make me smile...and make me think. My dachshund, Pirate, gives it five stars, and so do I.
Dog Lovers' Alert.......2006-07-26
This is an extremely clever book of philosophy derived from the observations of a dog owner. The delightful illustrations add to the book's appeal.
A "table top" must!.......2004-08-04
"If it makes your tail wag it's good" is only one of the thought provoking words of wisdom in these colorfully illustrated lessons that dogs can teach us about unconditional love and happiness. Every time I turn through these beautifully written pages my tail wags harder each time. Thank You Amy Jordon Smith for sharing your biscuit.
Thoughtful and very amusing.......2004-07-08
As a dog owner and lover of animals in general I found this book to be a must! Smith is very keen to remind us that our pets are not just animals but members of our family and their loyalty has no boundries.
Puppy Chow For The Soul!!!.......2004-07-01
LIFE IS SHORT; EAT BISCUITS is beautifully illustrated, and through the eyes of a puppy, reinvents so many of life's "words of wisdom"...sayings we've repeatedly heard, but unfortunately seldom apply. This book is truly Puppy Chow for the soul; especially for those of us that have experienced the unconditional love bestowed on us by our own "Calvin" puppy. Life is indeed short, so take the time, and share a biscuit with someone you love while enjoying this book. Kudos to the author and illustrator!!!
