Book Description
On April 18, 1942, Lt. Col. Jimmy Doolittle led a flight of sixteen B-25 bombers off the flight deck of the USS Hornet on one of the most daring raids in U.S. military history, a low-level strike on Tokyo and other Japanese cities. For this heroic act, he received the Medal of Honor. But, as Dik Alan Daso convincingly argues, James H. Doolittle should be remembered as much more than a famous combat pilot. With a doctorate in aeronautics from MIT, he devoted his life to mastering the technical and practical intricacies of the most amazing new invention of his time, the airplane. In 1922, Doolittle became the first person to complete a transcontinental flight across the United States in a single twenty-four-hour period. Later he worked with the Shell Oil Company to develop high-octane aviation fuel to enhance aircraft performance. He also won numerous trophies for his record-breaking high-speed flights, and he developed new instrumentation to assist pilots when flying “blind” in poor weather. In jet age parlance, Doolittle constantly “pushed the envelope.” After holding several major combat commands during World War II, he was appointed a special assistant to the Air Force chief of staff in 1951 and served as a civilian adviser in scientific matters, including the development of ballistic missiles and the fledgling space program. From the early days of aviation to the space age, Daso provides a concise but expansive overview of the rapidly developing field of aviation and chronicles a pioneer’s tireless efforts to be a visionary for the new era.

The range of his achievements lie far outside the war years.......2004-01-13
Doolittle: Aerospace Visionary by biographer Dik Alan Daso is a close analysis of the life of famous World War II combat pilot James H. Doolittle. Yet the full range of his achievements lie far outside the war years; Jimmy Doolittle was the first person to complete a transcontinental United States flight in a single twenty-four hour period, and won trophies for his record-breaking high-speed flights. Doolittle's aviation skills, his thirst for adventure, his boundless determination, and his unabashed love and promotion of military and civilian aviation make for an informative, uplifting, and very highly recommended biographical profile.

Book Description
Human Body is a concise guide to the structure, functions, and disorders of the body. Using full-color, highly detailed illustrations and clear, accessible language, this book is a fascinating introduction to how the body works and what may go wrong. The first part, Anatomy of the Human Body, begins with a medical atlas that shows how the parts of the body fit together. Each individual body system -- such as the skeletal and digestive systems -- is then fully illustrated and explained in detail. A compelling section on the human life cycle examines the changes in the body from conception to old age. In the second part of the book, Diseases and Disorders, some of the most common disorders are described and illustrated, system by system, with explanations of exactly what goes wrong and why. Medical conditions covered include infections, injuries, and cancer. Finally, there is a concise glossary of medical terms.

Neat!.......2007-05-05
I bought this for a friend who loves things like this, but before I sent it off to him I took a look at it myself. I thought this was the perfect book for anybody that really wants details about what goes on inside ourselves. It has great full color diagrams and tons of information. A great pick!
Wonderful small size atlas.......2007-05-01
Great book. For those who are just interested in anatomy will be perfect and should be enough, but medical students would rather use it as a wonderfully colored and easy to read supplement. It's small size, you can keep it in your purse and read anywhere. The best value of that book are colored photos and illustrations with detailed explanations that everybody will undurstand. I personally loved it.
A must have.......2007-02-01
I am currently pursuing a degree in Medical Transcription and an instructor recommended this book.
This book is great. It is small and compact. You can carry it with you anywhere and it fits easily into a backpack. There is so much information in this little. It is written in a way that is clear and concise and easy to understand.
This book has come in very handy. Not only in my Transcription work, but also in some of my other classes. I definitely plan on taking this little book with me when I start my internship and job in Medical Transcription. This is a great resource to have. I highly recommend this book to others.
Wonderful tool!.......2007-01-10

Food Art: Garnishing Made Easy.......2007-01-27
The book was received in excellent condition. However, it was too advanced for the use of teaching a beginners class. I think it will be of use in our kitchen, but not as I had intended.
He LOVES it!.......2006-09-16
Not only was the book cheaper on Amazon than the bookstores but I ordered this book for my boyfriend from here and I got it earlier than expected so that was great! He says it has great step-by-step images and that's a positive for him since he learns more from visuals. Also, it has instructions that he's able to follow and understand.
We both just wish it had more "food art" in the book but, overall, it's a great book!
Easy and Elegant.......2006-07-01
I am a caterer "wannabe" who has been doing food art for family and friends for some time and found this book to be a great launching tool for ideas. The carvings I enjoy the most are the potato flowers (very easy), tomato roses, & carrot tulips. Also, the photos of vegetable and cheese and cracker trays have been indispensible and well accepted when I imitated these in my displays. I would definitely recommend this book to both beginner and professional alike.
unrealistic and over the top.......2006-03-13
If you were the chef on a cruise ship, these techniques might be useful, but if you're setting out a buffet at home or as a caterer, you'd be insane to bother with this garish and elaborate nonsense. If you want people to actually eat your food, make it approachable; Nobody's going to go near it if they're afraid to ruin your work of "art". Even the photos on the cover of this book look overdone and artificial... not at all appetizing.

Customer Reviews:
Poor quality!!!!.......2007-02-08
Do not buy this book!!! 10 minutes after I recieved the book, I decided to return it. The pictures of the sculpters are a poor quality, and some are not pictures at all, but are hand drawn illustraions (not good illustraions either). Even the sculptures themselves are tacky (littlerabbits with pink ears and so forth). Again...Please do not waste your money on this book.
Please don't buy!.......2006-01-19
After having read the previous review i made the gamble and bought the book. Please don't make the same mistake. The book laks proffessionalism, instructions and originality. The book is a lousy collection of pictures of low grade food carvings, and gives no or minimal instructions on how to recreate them. if it was not for all the hassle and costs involved this book would have been returned on the same day as received!
A book for all levels.......2002-10-27
I have been in the food service industry for 18 years, and am always looking for new ideas. A friend told me about this book a month ago and I've been having fun with it ever since. Food for Thought.......2004-04-30
I have never made garnishes before, but a friend of mine had recommended this book so I purchased it a couple weeks ago--and I love it! Since my husband is an avid fisher, I created the "Gone Fishin'" centerpiece for his birthday last week. It was a little challenging at first because I've never sculpted with fruit before, but with practice, I eventually felt more comfortable piecing the fruits together. My husband appreciated it because of the theme, and the kids loved it because it was fun to eat!
Some of the fruits tend to brown quicker, but i've found that rubbing lemon juice helps to slow the procecss. The book seems to have projects for all skill levels, but I prefer the easier ones like the penguin, alligator and reindeer because they're quick to make.

You can play with your food. In fact, you should. All the details are in Joost Elffert's remarkable Play with Your Food, which introduces readers to a new way of seeing the food they eat, then shows them how to transform that food into creatures of extraordinary personality.
Put a navel orange on its side, pip facing you. See anything yet? What do the folds suggest? Carve ovals and insert beans and sliced almonds--voila, two eyes. Cut ears from the sides of the orange and pull them forward. Now you have it--a cat's face of amazing and endearing character. But that's only the beginning. Learn to make artichoke-leaf aphids, bok choy buffalos, okra grasshoppers, green-pepper camels, and pear mice--just a few of the 75 ingenious projects.
Consisting primarily of color photos of the creatures, first in portraiture and then in step-by-step "recipes" for their creation, Play with Your Food teaches readers above all to see. In addition to limning techniques, the minimal text provides a short look at manmade and natural imagery that suggests or embodies the possibilities of metamorphosis. Then it's on to the creatures themselves and the fun of constructing them. Anyone who enjoys play and the magic of transformation will want Joost's book--and having seen it, will never look at eatables in the same way again. --Arthur Boehm
Customer Reviews:
A good Library book..,.......2007-09-10
This is interesting and amusing to look through ONCE. I wish instead of buying it I just took it out of a library. I had hoped I'd get loads of ideas to add on a plate of food gifts or something but there was nothing much to learn here except for the fact that Black eyed beans make good "eyes". The great photography sold this book. I passed it on to my daughter who is more artistic than I. With just a little inspiration she will do some great pumpkin carvings ETC. However, if you're not born with artistic abilities don't expect it from this book. The real point of the book is for the author to make money.., mission accomplished!
A cute book on food art ... but overly thin on content.......2007-08-20
A friend of mine gave me a copy of this book a few months back. I'd flipped through it a couple of time, but I finally got around to reading it cover to cover today. It's a fast read ... the edition I have is only 109 pages, and most of them are photos. I finished it during a 1 hour workout at the gym earlier today.
The author basically takes the approach of looking at various fruits and vegetables like a rorschach diagram ... selecting oddly shaped examples and looking at them from all different angles, while looking for standouts that display some unusual inner character or expressiveness - and then, with only a few minor cuts and tweaks, turns them into living art.
It's a very clever book, and some of the results that the author achieves are extraordinary. I was particularly impressed with the author's pumpkin carving ability.
In any case, this book is more about making art than it is about carving food ... the produce is just the photographic subject.
Nits ?
I thought the author dealt with the subject a bit too briefly and narrowly. Although the book is 109 pages, 90% of that page count is mostly photos ... the book can be read in well under 1 hour. I'd like to have seem more page count devoted to discussion and things like carving technique.
I'd also have like to see the author include some examples taking a less ultra-simple and ultra-minimalist course ... by doing some more extensive carving and alteration. Things like carving melons, and cutting interesting & amusing garnishes for parties. Such material could have taken the book a bit out of the land of avante garde whimsy, and into the realm of practical home entertaining.
Still, for what it is, the book is very enjoyable. It's still coffee table fodder, to be sure, but enjoyable none the less.
Play With Your Food.......2005-07-07
Excellent, although it may have been directed toward children, it is a great source of information and pictures for catering and decorating food tables. I use it all the time and marvel at how I now look at fruit and vegetables prior to buying.
There's Always a New Way To Look At Cuisine.......2004-07-02
Don't think for a moment that the insane food presentation ideas in this book are only meant to delight children; adults I've entertained become hysterical when served okra lizards or pigs carved from citrus fruits. Two caveats if you try any of these techniques: choose the right sized knife, and make sure it is sharp. Another good idea is to have spare food on hand; you'll ruin an attempt or two for sure as you slice your way up the learning curve.

Unbelievably Clever!.......2002-12-06
If you have never had the pleasure of flipping through the pages of this book, then buy it today! At first glance, it is merely a whimsical, albeit beautiful, series of photos. However, upon closer inspection, the expressions on the faces really start to come across. And, yes, I'm talking about produce! This is a great book to put on your coffee table and share with your friends.

Chef Larousse as a mentor.......1997-11-11
I am writing because I own two of Chef Larousse's books and both are awesome. I also want to say on a more personal level that I had the honor of having Chef Larousse as an instructor while attending Johnson and Wales University several years ago. His dedication and passion for the Culinary Profession is inspiring and I owe much of my success to this great man and mentor.

Just Okay.......2006-08-16
I have a lot of garnishing books... always looking for new ideas. This book is limited in what garnishes it offers. There are other books that are so much better. (Gourmet Garnishing by Mickey Baskett) or (Garnishing by Dr. Oetker) These are two of the best with wonderful garnishes we can all do!
