Book Description

The private art collection of Mrs. Carmen Thyssen-Bornemisza is considered one of the most important in the world. The Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum has published these two volumes to accompany the permanent exhibition of the International Collection, which includes 345 works of art by Brueghel, de Hooch, Van Goyen, Canaletto, Fragonard, Constable, Corot, Pissarro, Sisley, Degas, Van Gogh, Monet, Gauguin, Braque, Kandinsky, Nolde, Heckel, Hopper, Picasso, Juan Gris and others. Also included in two the volumes is a selection of works of art from a number of important 19th-century American artists such as Head, Bierstadt, Church, and Bricher. Provided here is a fully documented analysis of the collection, including color illustrations and a summary profile for each work of art, as well as research analyses written by 87 international experts and field specialists. There is an introduction to each chapter written by Javier Arnaldo--the publisher of these volumes, and co-curator at the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum. Volume 1 focuses on art from the 13th to 19th centuries, while Volume 2 looks at art of the 19th and 20th centuries. Combined, these two books feature 960 pages and some 270 beautifully-reproduced full-color images.

4 out of 5 stars Carmen Thyssen-Bornemixza Collection Vol 1 & 2.......2006-03-09

After seeing the collection in Madrid a study of Vol 1& 2 were rewarding in so far as each work of art (95% plus ) paintings had an essay regarding the work and aspects of the artists life and style. The paintings in the books and collection were perhaps not typical of the artist they are in deed lovely and worth an art lovers time. These are not coffee table books but give one an opportunity to get a good idea of what Western art is. A. Cinelli, M.D.

A quiet man who lived with his beloved mother, the painter Édouard Vuillard applied his inventive talents to re-imagining bourgeois interiors as shifting planes of color and pattern. Admirers of his sensuous interior world will be bowled over by this sumptuous volume with its vivid narrative and 463 exquisite color reproductions. In Édouard Vuillard, Guy Cogeval discusses the artist's life and work with a passionate involvement that is rare in contemporary art writing. He describes how Vuillard's early work as a set designer apparently led him to stage manage family members, placing them in tense or confrontational tableaux that he memorialized in paint. Vuillard was an enthusiastic amateur photographer who favored the new handheld Kodak camera. An entire chapter is dedicated to the artist's charmingly artless snapshots of family and friends. In his later years, Vuillard utilized a more down-to-earth painting style in portraits of the rich and famous. While these paintings are often dismissed as conservative, Cogeval points out Vuillard's use of subtle details to comment on some of his sitters. Four other essayists treat themes ranging from "Vuillard and Ambiguity" to the effect of his annual summer vacations on his treatment of landscape, light and composition. This exceptional book accompanies an exhibition at the National Gallery of Art, in Washington, D.C., from Jan. 19 to April 20, 2004, which travels to Montreal, Paris, and London. --Cathy Curtis

Book Description

The illustrious career of Edouard Vuillard (1868-1940) spanned the fin de siècle and the first four decades of the twentieth century. During that time, the French painter, printmaker, and photographer created a large number of extraordinary works. This gorgeous book-the most comprehensive and authoritative study of Vuillard's art to date-presents some hundred works that reveal the full range of his renowned artistic abilities.

In a series of illustrated essays, the authors explore Vuillard's complex and diverse career, which began with his academic training in Paris in the late 1880s. By the early 1890s, Vuillard was painting the innovative and sensual Nabi paintings for which he is best known, characterized by complex patterns and vibrant colors. Vuillard was also beginning to paint provocative interiors and works associated with the avant-garde theater. The book concludes with an examination of Vuillard's sumptuous large-scale decorations, luminous landscapes, and elegant portraits from the last decades of his career as well as a substantial selection of his pastels and prints, in addition to his photographs, many of which have never before been published.

This book is the catalogue for an exhibition on view at the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C., from January 19 to April 20, 2003, which then travels to the Museum of Fine Arts, Montreal (May 15 to August 24, 2003); the Galeries Nationales du Grand Palais, Paris (September 23, 2003 to January 4, 2004); and the Royal Academy of Arts, London (January 27 to April 27, 2004).

it is really a wonderful book, with very many very beautiful illustrations, many of not always known them. really much more of which it hoped, it contains whole work catalogues of very important museums for the lovers of the painting of Vuillard, it contains 463 beautiful illustrations to color

5 out of 5 stars From hesitation to a superb rating...........2003-04-19

I had the opportunity to see this show at the National Gallery in Washington D.C. and am amazed at how well everything was represented both in the book and at the show. At first I wasn't going to buy the book but, after speaking with my painting professor, who has been collecting Vuillard books for over 30 years, state that this is THE most comprehensive book of Vuillard's work and probably has more information and work than all his other Vuillard books combined, well, that clenched it and I had to get the book. I am very, very glad I did.

5 out of 5 stars An authoritative coverage of Vuillard's vast body of art.......2003-04-14

The career of this French painter and photographer spanned the first four decades of the 20th century and produced a wealth of works. Edouard Vuillard represents the most comprehensive and authoritative study of Vuillard's art, with over a hundred works covering the wide range of his creations and enjoying essays by the authors, who explore his career and influences. Though it's the catalog for an exhibition in Washington DC, Edouard Vuillard will also earn its own rightful place as an authoritative coverage of Vuillard's vast body of art.

5 out of 5 stars A reputation revived.......2003-03-03

Vuillard has always attracted less attention than Bonnard and long been regarded as interesting but rather limited and restricted in his interests and subject matter, in short an 'intimiste'.

This strikingly well produced book in which the colour illustrations are among the best I have ever seen makes it possible to reconsider the artist quite thoroughly and demonstrates convincingly that he covered a far wider range of subjects and ideas than has hitherto been generally supposed. There is much in here that even those who have seen previous Vuillard exhibitions will find new.

My one complaint is the enormous size and weight of the book which certainly helps with the reproductions but makes it difficult to read the extremely useful text which carries (successfully) the argument for reconsideration. Be it noted that the reproductions are of such high quality that they recreate the feel of Vuillard's surfaces which are a great pleasure.

One of the finest art books I have ever seen and a major contribution.

5 out of 5 stars Superb reproductions of Vuillard's work........1999-06-06

I studied my daughter-in-law's book intently and found the beautiful reproductions highly stimulating. I had not realized what a superb colorist Vuillard was. Although distemper is too tedious for me to use, I am hoping I can utilize some of his delicious color effects in the pastel portraits I paint.

This books shows what a wonderful portrait painter he was. He located his subjects in their personal surroundings in a masterful manner. Don't understand why it is so hard to locate this book. Will call you to see how long it will take to obtain a copy. I recommend it to everyone who cares about painting and visual beauty. This is no slick coffee table books but a gentle, lovely publication.

    Book Description

The contributions of artists Pierre Bonnard, Edouard Vuillard, Maurice Denis, and Ker-Xavier Roussel to the avant-garde of the 1890s as members of the group known as the Nabis are widely recognized. What is less known about these artists' careers is their work in decorative painting—work on a large or unusual scale. This gorgeous book reproduces 85 decorative works carried out by the four artists between 1890 and 1930. During this time each moved beyond the illusionism of easel painting and applied his wholly untraditional aesthetic of décoration to a traditional wide range of works for domestic interiors, from wall-size ensembles to screens. The book also examines the tastes and the role of the patrons who made these works possible.

Bringing together works from public and private collections, this book introduces and reunites paintings that have long been dispersed and presents to contemporary viewers bold and evocative works that literally expanded the role of painting as part of the modern experience

Inspired by contemporary Symbolist theory and the art of Paul Gauguin, the Nabis set out to revolutionize traditional aesthetics, turning their talents to painting, printmaking, posters, book illustration, textiles, furniture, and theatre design. Book Description

Best known for his intimate scenes of domestic life, Edouard Vuillard (1868- 1940) was one of the great Post-Impressionist artists. Yet—in contrast to contemporaries such as Bonnard, Matisse, and Gauguin—relatively little has been published about him. This book covers all of Vuillard's work and explores his association with a number of important stylistic groups, such as the Nabis and Symbolists. The plentiful illustrations are sure to appeal to all fans of Post-Impressionist painting.

              3 out of 5 stars A few good nuggets.......2007-04-11

I think the central theme is good. I learned a bit about the Tao, and I like the parallels the author draws between the Tao and good photography. By the end I found some of it repetitive, but overall I enjoyed his thesis and found it thought provoking.

5 out of 5 stars Why should you read this book? To learn to see. For real........2007-01-10

If you want to learn which f stop to use for a picture at the beach, don't read this book. If you want to learn what "ISO Rating" means, go somewhere else. If your pictures now are decent - well focused & exposed - but they seem to look like all the others, and lack _something_, then this book may help you find that something.

I had two pictures that I knew were excellent. I could feel it. They stood over the rest, but I didn't know why! I couldn't make more like them. If you have that frustration, then READ THIS BOOK! Now. Then look what happens to your pictures. They will be different. Mine were definitely better.

              Good luck,
              Jay

This inspirational publication gives a refreshing and unadulterated alternative to approaching photography as an artist, amateur, professional - indeed any combination one percieves oneself. This book speaks to all levels of photographers regardless of age, skill, financial resources or any other categories that may exist.

5 out of 5 stars Highly recommend it.......2005-11-03

I recently read The Tao of Photography by Philippe Gross and S Shapiro. This is, by far, the best book I have found on how to allow the photograph to find you, rather than the other way around. I highly recommend it to anyone who's interested in thinking outside the box, even if you don't have much interest in Taoism as a philosophy. This book might indeed change your views on photography and Taoism both.

5 out of 5 stars taking the next step.......2004-09-20

If you have chased after technical excellence and secured the skills necessary to produce near perfect technical images but realized they lack a soul and imagination then maybe this is the book for you. For many of us who love photography, beyond a hobby or sport or other activity, we will reach a point where we will know how to solve nearly all technical problems. We will have surrounded ourselves with high end gear and have come to realize that the knowledge and gear alone just are not enough. We will have mastered the words and grammer of the visual language but have not mastered the means to take in the world around us and impress it on our hearts and then take that impression with our mind and translate it to the media using our camera. That is a personal journey no book can shortcut for you. And this book does not teach you how to become an artist, no book or school can do that, instead it allows you to see another path, another perspective, in which possibilities can appear before you. It is said that a man can have eyes but not see, have ears but not hear, for some of us photographers we know that is so true, for those of us who seek to see and hear this book is the next step in our personal growth with our camera in hand.
