    Book Description

This novel analysis of contemporary Asian and Pacific Islander immigration to the United States offers the most up-to-date synthesis of findings on global migration today. It presents a series of principles regarding new double-step patterns in population movements at the end of the twentieth century. This discussion of new paths and modes of world migration in a rimless world is intended for a broad, inter-disciplinary audience of students, teachers, and professionals in ethnic studies, U.S. history, Asian and Asian-American studies, studies relating to the Pacific Rim, sociology, demographics, and international relations. This study of multi-level and multi-directional global migration opens with an analysis of world migration theory, macro and micro factors in international migration, and a review of research about recent migration patterns. Next, this study offers twenty-seven propositions about factors that have affected decisions of peoples to move elsewhere, their adjustment to new countries, their return migrations, and the impact of international migration. Asian and Pacific Islander immigration to the United States is examined along with extensive data based on U.S. immigration records. This fourth wave of immigration to the United States is then analyzed in detail. Accompanying this data and analysis is a model of double stepwise international migration--extremely useful for those studying the intricacies of global patterns of migration. Barkan concludes with other data on mobility variables, an appendix, and an index.

    Book Description

A lavishly illustrated survey of Pacific fiber art, with a stunning compilation of contemporary, archival, and museum images—an indispensable sourcebook for artists, craftspeople, designers, and architects.

Many of the most appealing and flamboyant designs of the human imagination have been expressed in the form of patterns. Nowhere is this more evident than in the South Pacific, which is home to some of the most innovative and inspirational patterns in fabric and fiber: an ever-changing story in which the islanders have reacted to the changes brought by contacts with Europe or by contemporary Western popular culture. Using natural fibers taken from local plant resources, such as coconut palm or pandanus leaves, and contemporary materials, including unraveled plastic sacking and lengths of shiny video tape, patterns of astonishing creativity and color are woven, bound, knotted, plaited, rubbed, or stamped.

Pacific Pattern provides a visual journey through the history of the Pacific, the techniques associated with fiber and fabric, and their cultural relevance to the people. It is the first book to reach beyond the ritual domain to encompass patterns in the everyday sphere, including the traditional patterns found in floor coverings, cooking containers, or storage baskets and the use of fiber art in architecture and interiors. 327 color illustrations.

5 out of 5 stars A gorgeous history of patterns, fiber and peoples evolves.......2005-12-05

Very highly recommended as a special holiday pick or art collection basic is the gorgeous Pacific Pattern, blending lovely color photos by Glenn Jowitt with a survey of South Pacific arts, from fiber art and videos to traditional patterns used in floor coverings and clothing. Pacific traditional patterns blend with new materials and purposes to blend old styles with new innovations - and Anthropology researcher Susanne Kuchler is the perfect choice, paired with Research Fellow Graeme Were, to explore both the artistic and anthropological roots of Pacific region art. A gorgeous history of patterns, fiber and peoples evolves.

    Book Description

Reconciling explosive growth with often majestic landscape defines New Geographies of the American West. Geographer William Travis examines contemporary land use changes and development patterns from the Mississippi to the Pacific, and assesses the ecological and social outcomes of Western development.
Unlike previous "boom"periods dependent on oil or gold, the modern population explosion in the West reflects a sustained passion for living in this specific landscape. But the encroaching exurbs, ranchettes, and ski resorts are slicing away at the very environment that Westerners cherish.
Efforts to manage growth in the West are usually stymied at the state and local levels. Is it possible to improve development patterns within the West's traditional anti-planning, pro-growth milieu, or is a new model needed? Can the region develop sustainably, protecting and managing its defining wildness, while benefiting from it, too? Travis takes up the challenge , suggesting that functional and attractive settlement can be embedded in preserved lands, working landscapes, and healthy ecologies.

4 out of 5 stars The Ghost of Tom McCall.......2007-06-13

In 1971 Oregon's likable curmudgeon Governor, Tom McCall, gained national notoriety when he urged people to vist Oregon -- but to move on with all deliberate speed -- or go back to California.

Prof. William R. Travis is a kinder, gentler McCall. But the Oregon politician and the Colorado geographer have the same basic message. The secret of the West's success in drawing people to its mountains, deserts, rivers, and estuaries is not so much resources as "amenities." But will the West's seductive geography prove its undoing? McCall and Travis, a generation apart, share the fear the West will choke on its demographic success.

The short version of Professor Travis' argument is that he sees sprawl everywhere, and the cure for it is open natural land.

Travis sees the West as a complex of core cities, their suburban sprawl, then the menacing "exurbs," a scattering of resorts, and an enormous "gentrified" range. Travis' is fond of cities, though he shares little of the loathing for the suburbs so common among urban planners. Most of his dislike is for the exurbs, yet the gentrified range gets a pass from him. The resorts, he hopes, will morph into "micropolitan" areas. This neologism might fit places like Flagstaff or Yakima.

Travis' strategy for choking sprawl and exurbia is an amplified version of one-time Albuquerque Mayor David Rusk's regional government approach. But the darkside of this approach, in a region the size of the West, is [more] reliance on the Federal Government, that already owns most of the West anyway.

This is where Travis falls into the trap he so much wants to West to avoid. It is clear from any number of referenda, a drastic but definitive form of "bottom-up planning," that one of the West's major amenities, ranking with mountains, deserts, and open natural space, is the absence of government meddling. The Federal Government, from the Border Patrol to the Bureaus of Land Management and Indian Affairs does not inspire confidence. Travis uses sound logic, but bad politics, in suggesting that the Feds administer already suspect land use planning.

What I think Professor Travis needs is another book that takes on some of the friction development in the West faces. He is, I believe, far too optimistic about the West's water supply [p. 31], and he is almost silent with respect to tribal claims, and to the immigration ("undocumented Americans") issue, including Mexican state-sponsored irridentism. But, he is at Boulder.

Regardless, Professor Travis has a deep appreciation for the complexity of the West, is technically on the cutting edge of Geography, and, I suspect, has a lot more to say. Readers in this field should look forward to his next books.

                  Book Description

Air quality is deteriorating, the globe is warming, and petroleum resources are decreasing. The most promising solutions for the future involve the development of effective and efficient drive train technologies. This comprehensive volume meets this challenge and opportunity by integrating the wealth of disparate information found in scattered papers and research. Modern Electric, Hybrid Electric, and Fuel Cell Vehicles focuses on the fundamentals, theory, and design of conventional cars with internal combustion engines (ICE), electric vehicles (EV), hybrid electric vehicles (HEV), and fuel cell vehicles (FCV). It presents vehicle performance, configuration, control strategy, design methodology, modeling, and simulation for different conventional and modern vehicles based on the mathematical equations. Modern Electric, Hybrid Electric, and Fuel Cell Vehicles is the most complete book available on these radical automobiles. Written in an easy-to-understand style with nearly 300 illustrations, the authors emphasize the overall drive train system as well as specific components and describe the design methodology step by step, with design examples and simulation results. This in-depth source and reference in modern automotive systems is ideal for engineers, practitioners, graduate and senior undergraduate students, researchers, managers who are working in the automotive industry, and government agencies.

5 out of 5 stars Modern Electric, Hybrid Electric, and Fuel Cell Vehicles: Fundamentals, Theory, and Design.......2007-03-26

It is a good textbook for studying electric vehicle and correspondence. It has paid much attention to explain the designing issues of an electric vehicle and tried to figure out what problems they are.
Good understanding for an electric vehicle.

3 out of 5 stars System Design, not Component Design.......2007-01-28

There is a dearth of books on hybrid gasoline-electric vehicles, so this book is welcome. However, the equations are not detailed enough for actual component design. There are no Simulink block diagrams, for instance, so a reader will be unable to do his own simulations directly from this book. The book is useful, though, for deriving the large scale parameters for a hybrid gasoline-electric vehicle or fuel cell-electric vehicle (power plant size, peak power source size, etc.) The worst chapter is Chapter 6, Electric Propulsion Systems. The authors throw numerous equations at the reader (for the various type of electric motor-generators), but with the symbols defined after the equations, and without any real derivation. Actual block diagrams (with real values) are not provided--so how is an automotive engineer supposed to use this material?

I've got other complaints. Chapter 3, Internal Combustion Engines, doesn't even discuss the Atkinson cycle--the one most commonly used in hybrid vehicles. (And of course the Satz engine, the most efficient engine ever designed, is not mentioned.) I was also expecting detailed descriptions of the Toyota Prius and Ford Escape/Mercury Mariner Hybrid drivetrains--no such luck, although this book is copyrighed 2005. The CVT discussion is minimal (there is on p. 135 a simple block diagram for the Prius drive train)--there should have been a detailed analysis and synthesis of eCVT, etc.

And another thing: the English in the book is substandard. I realize that for the foreign authors English is a second language, but still the CRC editors should have caught the many mistakes. For the next edition, please clean up the English and provide detailed Simulink diagrams, then I'll recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars The enigmatic man behind Snoopy..........2005-09-03

All of the comics, and some parts of popular culture in general, continue on in the shadow of "Peanuts". True, the strip's popularity declined in the late 1990s. And some found it "too commercial". Not only that, the comic strip itself has seen a depressing decline (the fate of the traditional comic strip gets tied to the fate of newspapers in general; the two seem inseparable; today's internet comics have a different sort of life). Still, Charlie Brown and Snoopy, in some ways, have become as ingrained in popular culture as Charlie Chaplin or John Wayne. And nothing has come close to filling the void that "Peanuts" left behind in the year 2000. After all, "Peanuts" was to the comic strip page what the Beatles were to popular music. Both heightened and expanded their genres irreversibly and with undisputed universal influence.

Though "Peanuts" remains somewhat ubiquitous, its creator, Charles Schulz, remains downright enigmatic. He never openly courted fame, and he poo-pooed notions that his comic strip represented any sort of an "art form". The interviews collected in this book help bring Schulz to life. They lift that strange veil that surrounds his character. But even after reading this entire book, Schulz retains a good deal of his strange elusiveness. And that might have just as much to do with the readers than with the creator of "Peanuts".

We've come to expect celebrities to act a certain way, to be a certain way, and to flaunt themselves in a certain way. Schulz contradicted most of our assumptions about what a celebrity represents and stands for. With all of his lavish success and international honors he continually downplayed his achievements by saying that he "only draws a comic strip". He seemed confused, but gracious, by the fuss that people made over "Peanuts". When asked about his creative process by multiple interviewers in this book, his collective responses pretty much sum up to "it's a job". He claimed he didn't know where his ideas came from. And his focus remained on drawing 365 strips a year, and that remained the main focus of his life. The Schulz that ultimately emerges from these interviews seems self-deprecating and a little bitter, but nonetheless cautiously proud of his stature in the comic strip realm (though always adding "it's only a comic").

On the flip side from Schulz's Midwestern "boy next door" demeanor stands his fairly lavish lifestyle. The soft spoken, modest Schulz lived in almost palatial estates packed with the luxuries of the day. Kenneth Wilson's interview from 1967 begins with his becoming almost hopelessly lost in the vastness of the "Coffee Grounds" in Northern San Fransisco (where Schulz lived with his first wife until around 1972). Schulz later admitted that the Redwood Empire Ice Arena had cost him $140,000 a month to maintain. He also had his own private golf course. So there's a tension between the soft-spoken comic strip man and the man possessing a fabulous, unimaginable fortune.

So something's happening here. And this something makes these interviews scintillating to pressure point. Schulz also claimed that he was not an intellectual; that he didn't understand deep appreciations of his work (such as Umberto Eco's rhapsody on the psychological wonders of "Peanuts"). Nonetheless, he enjoyed Fellini movies, great novels (Tolstoy), "Citizen Kane", Classical Music (particularly Brahms), and George Herriman's "Krazy Kat" (a wildly intellectual comic strip; the only one that usually beats out "Peanuts" on "best strip" polls). He was also deeply religious, had taught Sunday School to adults, didn't believe that Christianity should have denominations, and had a well thought out argument against prayer in public schools. So his innocent child-like persona either belied self-knowledge on his own part or was a facade put on for the public. Thomas Hart Benton, the famous American painter, was deeply intellectual and well-read but was terrified of letting his fans know this. He thought it would negatively affect the public portrayal of his paintings. For similar reasons Ben Franklin wore a fur cap to Versailles. Was Schulz up to the same thing? He comes across as a pretty smart and worldly guy throughout these interviews. But he also continually made statements such as "I don't get that" or "that's above me". Maybe he thought cartoonists shouldn't display intellectual capacities publicly? Or perhaps simple modesty motivated him? Of course it's all speculation to a degree, but this tension runs throughout the interviews. Particularly following his astonishing remark from 1956: "I guess I'm the worst sort of egotist-the kind who pretends to be humble." One thing remains clear at the end of this book: there's much more to Charles Schulz than meets the eye.

One of the most interesting (and maybe revealing) passages in the book comes in the book's final interview. Gary Groth, from "Comics Journal", outright asked why Schulz takes part in such commercial ventures as the Metropolitan Life ads. Schulz dodged the question somewhat, but Groth didn't swerve. He claimed that Schulz has enough money to keep going without the licensing of his characters. Schulz replied, "Yeah, but I couldn't do all of the things that we do... If you turn that off, I'll recount some of that." And Groth inserted: "[The tape recorder is turned off and Schulz recounts some of his philanthropic work.]" Again, more evidence that things just aren't as they seem.

Anyone interested in the creator of "Peanuts" should read this book. It runs the gamut of his career from 1956 to 1997. The book's final interview runs nearly 100 pages all by itself. It covers voluminous topics. Also, "Peanuts" strips from all eras dot the pages, including some of Schulz's lesser known Saturday Evening Post comics and his first ever published drawing (of his dog from a "Ripley's Believe it or Not" strip from the 1930s).

Schulz's "Peanuts" stands as the pinnacle and, sadly, probably as the swan song of a printed medium in fast decline. It's difficult to imagine that a comic strip will ever again capture the public's imagination the way "Peanuts" did in the 20th century. This great collection of interviews allows readers a small glimpse of the person who made it all happen.

                      4 out of 5 stars Interesting insights.......2004-07-09

This interesting book which consist of about 16 interviews done by Charles M. Schulz (out of nearly 300) which Schulz revealed his backgrounds, motives and understanding of his works. Reading the interviews from the 1950s to the 1990s, it revealed an interesting evolution of Schulz's character, insights and his development as a cartoonist as he grow older and his "Peanut" empire got bigger. While you can't considered this as a biography, reader will definitely get a clear understanding of Schulz's personality from these interviews.

I was surprised that there was no mentioned of how Schulz and NASA got involved since Apollo 10 used Charlie Brown and Snoopy as code names. Such absolute faith in NASA probably needed further review.

Overall though, an excellent book that probably should be read by all fans of Charlie Brown and Snoopy strip.

4 out of 5 stars Some Good Insights Into Schulz.......2001-09-10

I picked up this book of various interviews that Charles Schulz did from the mid-1950's to the late -1990's to get a better feel for the creator of the world's greatest comic strip, Peanuts. There are some interesting insights here, particularly into Schulz's personality. You really see that the lonliness and feelings of defeat suffered by Charlie Brown for almost 50 years were what Schulz felt for his childhood and a great deal of his adult life.

A lot of the questions asked by the various interviewers dealt with Schulz's religious beliefs, given the fact that many of the Peanuts comics had a religious tone to them. I found some of Schulz's comments interesting, but I never cared that much for those particular Peanuts strips, so a significant portion of this book didn't hold much interest for me.

It was interesting to see how the interviews conducted by writers employed by comic book magazines seemed very critical of Schulz related to the commercialization of Peanuts (i.e. Ford Motor ads in the 1960's, MetLife, etc.) I think Schulz handled these queries very well and also shows how tough he could be when pressed.

I think if you've read Rheta Johnson's terrific biography of Schulz and seen thegreat documentary on A&E, you'll have the best background of Schulz. This book is best served as a "fill in the blanks" supplement to those media.

5 out of 5 stars Inside a pop culture icon.......2000-09-28

Not the usual skimpy biography or comic compilation, this is a lengthy (300-plus pages) and thoughtful Q&A session between Schulz and well-prepared and insightful interviewers. Schulz' modesty, thoughts on life and humor, and love of his craft are easy to discern, and the details of the history of "Peanuts" and the creative process are, quite obviously, as "inside" as they come. Amply illustrated with comic strips. A fitting tribute.

Columnist and consultant Rhonda Abrams believes today's most successful businesses are shifting from a patriarchal style of leadership to one in which characteristics such as growth, development, maturity, and nurturing--all traits traditionally associated more often with mothers than fathers--have moved to the forefront. Wear Clean Underwear: Using Mom's Fundamental Lessons to Run an Extraordinary Business is her light-hearted but utterly serious examination of this continuing trend, matching familiar motherly maxims like "How do you know you won't like it, if you've never tried it?" and "Don't get too big for your britches" with actual managerial practices at companies such as Nordstrom, Kinko's, and 3M. "Moms everywhere have developed an almost universal language to achieve their goals and instill common values," she writes.
Virtually everyone's mother at one time or another told them to "Clean your plate, children are starving in China" or whatever country happened to be in the news. Think about all the lessons in that one little line: don't waste your resources, understand that you are more fortunate than others, empathize with those who have less.
In this clever volume, Abrams shows how such wisdom can be both relevant and useful in today's business environment. --Howard Rothman

                      Book Description

Find out how successful companies like Disney, Nordstrom, and Kinko's have triumphed by heeding Mom's timeless advice.

Mom. She's the quintessential leader. She not only manages, but she teaches, nurtures, sustains, and guides. She patiently taught us right from wrong as well as how to think, to care, and to be decent human beings. In this eye-opening guide, a leading business writer and consultant shows us how great companies have excelled by embracing timeless values--and how, in an age of increasing cynicism, the time is right for thinking like Mom. Filled with sage advice from top business leaders and based on in-depth research and personal interviews, Wear Clean Underwear illustrates how successful businesses--including Disney, Kinko's, and 3M--have triumphed by heeding Mom's advice:

Southwest Airlines bucked industry trends and succeeded--by listening to Mom's If All Your Friends Jumped off a Bridge, Would You Jump off One Too?

When outdoor clothing manufacturer Patagonia began to outgrow its own values, character, and style, its CEO made an extraordinary decision, taking a lesson from Mom: Don't Get Too Big for Your Britches.

Nordstrom is virtually unmatched in its reputation for customer service. How do they do it? In part from following Mom's great adage: I Don't Care Who Made This Mess, Just Clean It Up!

"If all your friends jumped off a bridge, would you jump off one too?" Southwest Airlines bucked the industry trend of keeping wages and benefits low while competing on the basis of price--and is now one of the ten most admired companies in the country and one of the few consistently profitable airlines.

"Don't judge a book by its cover." A severely dyslexic man realized he'd never get a good job, so he opened his own business, which was built on mutual trust and communication with his employees--a company called Kinko's, now with more than 900 locations nationwide.

Filled with sage advice from top business leaders based on in-depth research and personal interviews, WEAR CLEAN UNDERWEAR illustrates how successful businesses, including Disney, Nordstrom, and 3M, have triumphed by heeding Mom's advice. -->

Columnist, consultant, and best-selling author Rhonda Abrams has written a clever and enjoyable book that compiles the simple wisdom of motherly advice into a basic primer on ethical business behavior. Without offending the mothers of the world, this isn't a book to read if you're looking for real-world management technique. It is however an entertaining and sometimes inspiring collection of aphorisms that is especially compelling when presenting luminaries like Southwest Airline's Herb Kelleher expounding on the virtues taught them by their own moms. We [...] recommend this book as a refreshing break, and as a great gift.

I have both of Rhonda Abrams' other books, The Successful Business Plan and The Successful Business Organizer. So I knew I wouldn't be disappointed with this wonderful book. It's very different from Rhonda's other books -- this is a narrative of great companies, including examples of how they became great and what keeps them prosperous. It's so well-written as well as insightful. It's really a gem of a book. Gave me specific things I could put to use in my own business --- especially in dealing with customers. This is one of my favorite books, ever. I'm giving this for gifts, even to my non-business friends. (You'll love the story about Odwalla, guaranteed!)

If you snickered at the title Wear Clean Underwear, you are not alone. Who could resist the pull of familarity of mom's wisdom?. We go back and remember our childhood, and read on to see the foundation of a solid future. This is wisdom like no other. Wear Clean Underwear is the best business book I have read. Rich with examples from real life and big business, this book is all you'll ever need for genuine business success. Wear Clean Underwear is about integrity and character, and you can bet you'll learn about, cheer, and affirm both as you walk through the pages of this book. You will find it warm, inspiring and full of business "smarts." It is a nourishing book stocked with lots of meat and potatoes, and delivers some mighty fine just desserts.
