On November 1, 1950, two Puerto Rican nationalists, Oscar Collazo and Griselio Torresola, nearly assassinated President Harry Truman. If this historical fact surprises you, you're not alone. American Gunfight, a new account by suspense novelist and Pulitzer Prize-winning film critic Stephen Hunter and journalist John Bainbridge Jr., examines this largely forgotten episode in meticulous detail, including the conspiracy surrounding it and the misconceptions associated with the would-be assassins. As the book makes clear, it's remarkable that these two men even came close to succeeding, given the disorganized nature of the plot. Intending to attack the president at the White House, they only learned in passing from a cab driver that it was being renovated and that Truman was in fact living at the nearby Blair House. When they made their assault on Blair House, they quickly lost their element of surprise when Collazo's gun misfired, leading to a 38-second shootout in front of the residence that left Torresola and one policeman dead. Meanwhile, Truman witnessed the action from an upstairs window.

At his ensuing trial, Collazo was depicted as a crazed fanatic, but the authors argue that this simplified assessment unnecessarily dismisses a potential political conspiracy involving Puerto Rican nationalist leader Pedro Albizu Campos, who was believed by some to have masterminded the plot in an effort to bring attention to his cause. Hunter and Bainbridge provide in-depth portraits of Collazo and Torresola, as well as the Secret Service agent and three White House policemen who saved Truman's life. The descriptions of the remarkably light presidential security of the era reveal much about 1950s Washington, D.C., a time in which the president would take a daily walk around the neighborhood with just a bodyguard or two in tow. As a result of the attack, the Secret Service would forever change the way it guarded the president. This fast-paced book reads like a detective thriller, shifting quickly between various story lines and characters, including a second-by-second breakdown of the gunfight itself. The potboiler narrative may seem over the top at times, with its conjecture and imagined internal dialogue, but this comprehensive account succeeds in bringing this unlikely plot vividly to life. --Shawn Carkonen

Book Description

November 1, 1950 -- an unseasonably hot afternoon in sleepy Washington, D.C. At 2:00 P.M. at his temporary residence in Blair House, President Harry Truman takes a nap. At 2:20 P.M., two Puerto Rican natives approach from different directions. Oscar Collazo, a respected metal polisher and family man, and Griselio Torresola, an unemployed salesman, don't look dangerous, not in their new suits and hats, not in their calm, purposeful demeanor, not in their slow, unexcited approach. What the three White House policemen and one Secret Service agent guarding the president cannot guess is that under each man's coat is a 9mm German automatic pistol and in each head, a dream of assassin's glory.

"American Gunfight is the fast-paced, definitive, and breathtakingly suspenseful account of an extraordinary historical event -- the attempted assassination of President Harry Truman in 1950 by two Puerto Rican Nationalists and the bloody shoot-out in the streets of Washington, D.C., that saved the president's life. Written by Pulitzer Prize-winner Stephen Hunter, the widely admired and bestselling novelist and author of such books as Havana, Hot Springs, and Dirty White Boys, and John Bainbridge, Jr., an experienced journalist and lawyer, American Gunfight is at once a groundbreaking work of meticulous historical research and the vivid and dramatically told story of an act of terrorism that almost succeeded. They have pieced together, at last, the story of the conspiracy that nearly doomed the president and how a few good men -- ordinary guys who were willing to risk their lives in the line of duty -- stopped it. It is a book about courage -- on both sides -- and about what politics and devotion to a cause can lead men to do, and about what actually happens, second by second, when a gunfight explodes. It begins on November 1, 1950, an unseasonably hot afternoon in the sleepy capital. At 2:00 P.M. in his temporary residence at Blair House, the president of the United States takes a nap. At 2:20 P.M., two men approach Blair House from different directions. Oscar Collazo, a respected metal polisher and family man, and Griselio Torresola, an unemployed salesman, don't look dangerous, not in their new suits and hats, not in their calm, purposeful demeanor, not in their slow, unexcited approach. What the three White House policemen and one Secret Service agent cannot guess is that under each man's coat is a 9mm German automatic pistol and in each head, a dream of assassin's glory. At point-blank range, Collazo and then Torresola draw and fire and move toward the president of the United States. Hunter and Bainbridge tell the story of that November day with narrative power and careful attention to detail. They are the first to report on the inner workings of this conspiracy; they examine the forces that led the perpetrators to conceive the plot. The authors also tell the story of the men themselves, from their youth and the worlds in which they grew up to the women they loved and who loved them to the moment the gunfire erupted. Their telling commemorates heroism -- the quiet commitment to duty that in some moments of crisis sees some people through an ordeal, even at the expense of their lives. "

5 out of 5 stars This is a winner!.......2006-11-22

This has everything you want in a good book. A great story, history, drama, and pathos. I am a history teacher and was impressed by both the depth of research and the quality of the writing.
This is about 2 Puerto Rican Nationalists who, compelled by their fervent beliefs, tried to assassinate President Harry Truman in 1950. Most people do not realize how close they came to succeeding.
The story alternates between historical background and a moment to moment account of the gun fight that occurred on that day.
This book kept me enthralled the entire time I was reading it. I can't think of anyone who would not thoroughly enjoy this book.

4 out of 5 stars The Attempt on President Truman's Life.......2006-10-21

Authors Stephen Hunter and John Bainbridge provide the reader with minute details on the assassination attempt by Puerto Rican Nationalists on President Harry Truman outside Blair House on November 1, 1950. Many of the details provided are those they perceive to be in the mind of each of the assassins and those they are attacking during the gunfight. These details are interesting and perhaps correct. I feel it makes for a more interesting book. To me, the main drawback of the book is its disjointedness. Whenever a character is introduced into the story we are provided with a chapter delving into their background from years before. Due to this method of writing the book loses its continuity. The authors make a convincing case that the attempt may have been a part of a wider conspiracy. Security for presidents tightened significantly following the attempt on Truman's life. Truman did not run for reelection in 1952, and the attempt on his life may very well have been a factor in his decision. I have to admit to being one of those the authors refer to as those who weren't aware of this attempt on the life of President Truman, but confuse it with an incident in 1954 when four Puerto Rican Nationalists had a shootout in Congress. The book educated me, but I did not like getting sidetracked with chapters introducing the characters when they entered the story.

5 out of 5 stars great...love it.......2006-07-07

This book is awesome. First book I read about the subject. You will find yourself reading a chapter and saying what the hell...and then he draws it all together. It is written very well.

4 out of 5 stars Fascinating Story, Could Have Been Told Better.......2006-05-01

One of the thinks I particularly enjoy about history is its depth. While most people have at least a general familiarity with history, even students of history can always be surprised by in-depth looks at various periods of history. American Gunfight is a great example of this; while I was aware that two Puerto Rican nationalists attempted to assassinate President Truman in 1950, the details of the incident and the context surrounding it were not covered in any of the other histories of Truman I've read. While that was a logical decision on the part of the authors, as aside from this incident, Puerto Rico was a very small part of Truman's presidency, it left out a fascinating story that illustrates a slice of American history that is often forgotten.

American Gunfight provides a detailed look at the gunfight outside Blair House that left two men dead and three wounded, reviving the memory of American hero Les Coffelt, who almost certainly saved the President's life by killing one of the assassins even as he was bleeding out from three gunshot wounds. But the book goes well beyond the gunfight, branching out to explore the history of the men involved in the battle and the history of Puerto Rican nationalism. The book also takes on some of the common myths regarding the gunfight, in particular the theory that President Truman's life was never in danger.

The book's layout is somewhat distracting. The book jumps from the gunfight to background with each chapter, so the gunfight develops over the course of the entire work rather than being described as a discrete event. While it does serve as a useful means of introducing the characters and events surrounding the gunfight, I found it somewhat annoying. I also disliked the writers' tendency to mix tenses; in the middle of one paragraph they mix past and present with abandon.

Nonetheless, the book is well-researched and easy to read despite the issues I had with it, and I recommend it to anyone interested in President Truman, American history, or history in general.

2 out of 5 stars Could have been a great magazine article ..........2006-04-29

In a nutshell, this is a compelling story that's essentially ruined by horrible prose. The authors have adopted an almost "Memento"-esque flashback method of telling the backstories of all the personalities featured--no matter how mundane or irrelevant the detail. There's a great deal of repetition of key events and plot points as a result. I could live with this, but what absolutely ruined the book for me was the constant use of past and present tenses interchangeably--often within the same sentence! Additionally, the prose slips from formal to conversational too easily to suit me, though this is far less annoying than the incessant changing of tenses. It made me feel as if I was reading a book that had been hastily cobbled together over a weekend.

The authors introduce one of their interminable flashbacks at one point by saying "this book is about 38.5 seconds of gunfight, however ..." and therein lies the problem. This is undoubtedly a fascinating story, one with which most Americans are probably unfamiliar, and one that definitely deserves to be told. However, it would have read much easier as a 10- or 12-page magazine article; stretching it out into 325 pages really seems unnecessary.

Book Description

Michael Asher's investigation into the famous SAS operation, The Real Bravo Two Zero, became a bestseller, and his biography of Lawrence of Arabia was deemed "brilliant" by reviewers. Here, in a unique military memoir, he reveals his own background: how he joined the elite 2nd Battalion, the Parachute Regiment, and finally the SAS. Told he would fail the arduous training, he proved them all wrong. But after years of working with various branches of the military, and being stationed in Northern Ireland, Asher abandoned it all and departed for a new life in the Sudanese desert, where he has lived for years among the Bedouins.

5 out of 5 stars Gripping. As Near To Being There As It Gets........2003-12-02

This extremely well written book recounts the first hand experiences of Michael Asher throughout his time in the British Parachute Regiment, the Special Air Service and the Special Patrol Group in Northern Ireland. The book proceeds at a brisk pace throughout but is replete with enormous detail.

The brutally honest text grips the reader into a sense of "almost being there". Having completed a regular engagement in the British forces during the same period as that illustrated here, I can confirm the accuracy of many of the matters described, including some of the "less savoury" elements which may upset some readers.

The reader does not have to agree with the views expressed throughout this book, but needs to understand the realities on the ground which are so commendably portrayed and which form the basis of this work. Not least of these are the realism and humanity of the raw recruits undergoing such harsh physical & military training as well as the raw honesty of the writer.

The stress and pain endured throughout the many stages of specialist training are almost tangible and the reader can but grimace at times along with the author as he relates pivotal periods of his experience where the reality and atmosphere of occasional brutality & intimidation together with periods of humiliation are so vividly evoked.

The book is not one to be "enjoyed" as there is little here to lead the reader in that direction. This is a soldier writing about soldiers' experiences and some of the content might be considered "distasteful" to many readers who are not familiar with military life. Be warned.

The fear and frustration during patrols in Northern Ireland during the "Troubles" are among other realities really brought home to the reader, where every street corner, window, alleyway or shadow might hide a gunman. (The politics of the situation in Northern Ireland are largely avoided apart from reference to the occasional quote from those involved in a number of incidents.) Situations now being experienced by the military in numerous locations Worldwide.

All in all this is a thoroughly readable and informative study which reveals aspects of the British military and the "soldier on the ground" which might otherwise be largely overlooked. Highly recommended for anyone with an interest in military history and experience. Thank you.

3 out of 5 stars Real stories of deadly encounters.......2004-02-09

This book tells true stories of cops who have had to use deadly force in their line of duty. Although all of the stories handle encounters where someone is killed, this book does not glorify use of deadly force, or try to over dramatize the situations. The stories have very realistic feel, and most of the stories are not very exciting (but are still interesting). So if you are looking for exciting cop stories and Hollywood-style heroics, you should look elsewhere.

There are over 30 stories, most of which are 5-10 pages long. Therefore, you can pick this book up if you have 15 minutes to spare. Sadly, the narration is not of very high quality, but rather reminds of trashy pulp fiction books. Anyway, if you are looking for realistic depictions of police work that does not demand too much effort to read, this book might fill the bill.

5 out of 5 stars An absolute must for Arizona gun owners; plain English........1998-08-24

Alan Korwin has done a great job of summarizing the legalese in Arizona laws pertaining to guns and their utilization in this state. In clear and concise English, he explores the ins and outs of gun ownership, legal self-defense with a gun, carry restrictions, concealed-carry licensing, and legal definitions. Illustrated with cartoons to help you remember via visualization. Can you carry a concealed weapon with a license to do so in a restaurant? Check the book, and it tells you under what circumstances it's legal. What are the requirements to be issued a concealed carry license? Check the book. In short, it's an indispensible bible to be sure you walk the line responsibly with a firearm in Arizona. Ignorance of law is no excuse, and although Arizona is one of the most "firearms friendly" states in the union, there are pitfalls for the uninformed. This book covers them well and thoroughly.

For nine years Andrew Steinmetz worked as a ward clerk in the Intensive Care Unit and Emergency Department of a major hospital. Wardlife is a series of riveting prose vignettes—intensely observed moments drawn from diaries kept during the nine years he spent as a ward clerk. With character sketches, dialogues, and brief meditations on subjects ranging from the language of poetry to the language of medicine, Wardlife records the hospital experience—the pathos and pain, the humor and horror—of life on the wards. A profound and deeply sympathetic understanding of this unique environment is conveyed. Described are the feel of instruments, the tone of a locating girl's voice calling code blue, the oddly triumphant grieving of a family watching and singing at a dying father's bedside, and the complications of various hospital subcultures.

If you're a medical person who has ever spent much time working in a hospital (and you still have a soul), you will appreciate this book. You will laugh, you will cry...you will think about the day-to-day routine in a new light again. The lyrical imagery is amazing. Steinmetz had somehow combined the outsider/insider viewpoint of hospital life, in a way that helps combat burnout and cynacism. I'm an ER doc with 20+ years of experience.

              5 out of 5 stars a review of Wardlife.......1999-12-23

I really enjoyed Andrew Steinmetz's book, Wardlife. I usually shy away from books dealing with the medical field because, being in medical school, the majority of my day is spent in the hospital, and I like to use my free time to read about things other than "work." But, when I was home on Christmas break, I found my mother reading it, and I picked it up.

Wardlife is a compilation of events Mr. Steinmetz experienced while working as a unit coordinator in a hospital. Rich with description, the writing style varies from poetry, to meditation, to dialoque, but all accurately portray the feelings and thoughts that travel through your mind when you're in the hospital. His dark humor when writing of feelings of happiness, of despair, of not knowing how to handle situations, and of frustrations with the system permeate the text, and made me feel at times he was writing about where I work.

But, what made this book great to me was its inclusion of events that happen in the hospital outside the focus of illness, the things that make the hospital its own little world. Including things like take-out delivery men, interactions between medical and non-medical staff, and the families that "move-in", bringing in and adapting their everyday routines to the hospital, accurately describe what it is like to "live" in the hospital and become a piece of its world.

I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in the hospital world, and how it affects the people that work there.

"Libido maintenance is complicated," admits Judith Reichman, M.D., the frank "hormone maven" you've seen on PBS, The Today Show, and Oprah!. Few physicians are able to help or are comfortable helping women whose dwindling sexual urge interferes with sexual pleasure, intimacy, and expression of affection. I'm Not in the Mood examines the medical reasons for the loss of libido as women age. Reichman concludes that although estrogen replacement makes sexual activity more comfortable and pleasurable, it has no effect on sexual desire, whereas testosterone does. "From an ovarian point of view, many of us are testosterone-deprived, if not downright deficient," asserts Reichman. Testosterone deficiency can result in diminished desire and arousability, insensitivity of the clitoris and nipples, and difficulty reaching orgasm. She discusses the "good news" about and "dark side" of taking testosterone.

Reichman wisely avoids blaming testosterone deficiency for every sexual woe, however. She describes "Seven Sexual Saboteurs": psychological concerns, couple trouble, medications, disease, surgery, pain, and a partner with erectile difficulties. For each, she explains the problem and her recommended solution. She discusses (and, generally, dismisses) other products that are used or advertised as libido enhancers and gives advice about how to talk to your partner and to a sex therapist. --Joan Price

              Book Description

The "hormone of desire," testosterone, acts on the brain to stimulate sexual interest, sensitivity to sexual stimulation, and orgasmic ability in both sexes. The amount of testosterone circulating in a woman's blood declines by about 50 percent between her twenties and fifties. The most common complaint associated with this decline is a seemingly unexplainable decrease or loss of sexual desire and enjoyment.

In I'm Not in the Mood, Dr. Reichman reveals the effectiveness of small doses of testosterone in reviving sexual desire and pleasure for women. Questions answered and topics discussed include:

This book really focuses on organic desire problems, mainly loss of libido due to hormone fluctations. It really pushes the use of testosterone to increase libido, and other remedies and procedures that are largely geared towards much older women (usually through menopause). THIS IS NOT A HELPFUL BOOK FOR WOMEN UNDER 40.

A straight-forward explanation of causes for loss of sexual desire in women. It offers psychological (body image, depression, stress, relationship issues), physical, and drug/medical reasons. For these it suggests the best treatment depending on the cause, plus has a section on how to talk with your partner about the problem.
Useful to know the likely causes and gives a starting point for changing things.

5 out of 5 stars Man as the cause of a woman's decreased libido?.......2005-03-11

There's a surprise category in this book. But, first, what's best about the book.

I recommend the book to most of my female patients because it gives an excellent description of all of the causes of a woman's decreased libido. Reading this book gives a good framework for talking with the physician and for taking responsibility for improved health.

Perhaps she underestimates the power of testosterone. No matter what else goes on, if that hormone is low, a woman will struggle with her libido. If you're considering changing the way you replace your horomones and want more details about the personal experiences of someone before and after proper hormone replacement, read Suzane Summer's latest book.

The surprise category is this: Men can be the cause of a woman's decreased libido. The way Dr. Reichman explains it: if the man has ejaculation and quits before the woman is satisfied, then the woman experiences frustration and loses desire for sex. Replacing the hormones of a few thousand women has taught me that this problem is much more common than most men know (the woman does love her husband and so doesn't want to tell him). Dr. Reichman tries to address this problem by writing a few pages about impotence in males.

Here's the problem, most men will not seek treatment from a physician (only about 30% of men with erectile dysfunction...impotence or premature ejaculation...will see a physician). So, I often find Dr. Reichman's category to be a real one: men do contribute to the decreased libido of a woman when they don't understand how to provide prolonged love making for the woman who needs it to achieve orgasm.

Dr. Reichman doesn't expand on the problem of men as the cause of decreased libido, but another common problem in my practice is that the woman comes to see me with decreased libido, then after I treat her the husband can't keep up with her. So, she goes from decreased libido, to improved libido, to frustration and decreased libido again. Because my women patients usually can't convince their husbands to come see me, I wrote a 15-day course for men: Anytime...for as Long as You Want: Strength, Genius, Libido, and Erection by Integrative Sex Transmutation.

Now, I ask my women patients to read Dr. Reichman's book. Then when the woman improves her libido (with the book and my hormone therapy), I give the woman the book Anytime...for as Long as You Want (which comes with an audio CD) to help her convince her husband to seek help in keeping up with her new libido.

Read both of these books and don't give up. Just a few months ago, I had a 65-year-old patient brag to me that she had her first orgasm just a few weeks after starting therapy as descirbed in this book. Her husband of many years only smiled.

As a 28 year old mom with a 14 month old son and mild depression, I thought I'd buy this book. However, when I read the book, it told me nothing I didn't already know. I wish she could have written a chapter that reaches women in their 20s having these issues. I literally ear-marked 3 pages, which were the only three pages out of the whole book that applied to me. Moreso for women in their 30s-60s.

5 out of 5 stars A good start for client and clinician discussion.......2002-07-10

I have used this book in my clinical practice as a Women's Health Nurse Practitioner for the past couple of years to treat Female Diminished Libido. I loan my copy out to my patients who don't want to purchase this book and have had tremendous success with my patients. I have my client read the book over a couple of weeks while waiting for lab results to come back and then we discuss her lab results and what she discovered in the book. The book has had the beneficial effect that most of my patients are able to honestly reveal if there is marital discord that may not have been admitted to in the first appointment. Opening up the way for a sex therapist or marriage counselor has been another positive benefit of this book. I find that many of my patients were reluctant to consider counseling in the first appointment, but were willing to include counseling as part of the treatment plan of their decreased libido. So many women learn about the female body and functions for the first time while reading this book. Every patient has been very happy with this book and no longer felt alone with this problem. They were able to realize that other women have suffered with this same problem and that, most of the time, there is positive results with hormones, exercise, honest communication with their spouse, counseling and/or treatment for depression. I plan to continue to use this book in my treatment of Diminished Female Libido.

It's hard not eating meat, and I succumb often, usually with delicious fish dishes, always on Thanksgiving and Christmas, because I just love sitting down to a big turkey dinner with family and friends. But most of the time I try to stay away from meat, even though I quiver when I drive by a Mickey D's and smell that aroma. Yes, it's alright, I believe, to admit that you like going to McDonald's on occasion.

Anyway, I'm rambling when I should be focusing my attention on this wonderful cookbook, this gem from the Moosewood Restaurant people that is chucky-jam-crammed full of tasty vegetarian fare. If you have a spouse who screams for his steak, meatballs or pork chops, try serving him up Japanise Braised Eggpland or the Moroccan Stew Moosewood Restaurant style, you'll have his mouth watering, have him begging for more. In fact, I'd say if you want to be a vegitarian, you can throw all your other cookbooks away and just use this one. That's my opinion anyway and I'm sticking to it.

5 out of 5 stars Creative meatless cooking --some of my favorite recipes.......2002-06-06

The Moosewood cookbooks have some very creative, elegant and not too difficult recipes that are worthwhile even if you aren't vegetarian. Some of my favorite recipes are in this book, and it's really useful for dinner parties, especially if some of the guests don't eat meat. The Moosewood Collective is a hold-over from the late 60's and early 70's. It's a restaurant near the Cornell University campus, run by a "collective" or communal group of owners who share the restaurant proceeds equally while doing any of the jobs, such as cooking or washing dishes. The Moosewood New Recipes are international in flavor, ranging from Middle Eastern dishes like Baba Ganoush and Hummus (eggplant and chickpea dips) to French soups, Asian noodle dishes and Hispanic, Greek, and Italian dishes as well. There are some "gourmet" creations like Chilled Cantaloupe-Amarretto Soup and also some earthy ones like Creole Beans and Rice. My particular favorite is the Tempeh Reuben Sandwich. Tempeh is a fermented soybean cake that scares off all but the most dedicated vegetarians. But here, tempeh becomes a delicious substitute for corned beef. In fact, I prefer Tempeh Reubens to the classic ones--more flavor, less fat. Frankly, the book is worth the price for this recipe alone. Now, this book isn't 100% vegetarian (because fish is included, and they were part of the animal kingdom last time I checked.) And cheese is used, so vegans will find the recipes limiting. But if you want to jazz up your cooking and use more vegetables, this book is a real find. In particular, the appendix section on cooking dried beans is particularly helpful if you want to make inexpensive but delicious dishes like rice and beans (black beans or Creole red are both included here, as well as a navy bean soup.)

4 out of 5 stars worth it for one recipe alone.......2001-07-13

i've had this book for something like thirteen years now, it's a classic of course and my copy is falling apart it's so well-used. all the recipes i've tried have been well-conceived, well-explained and really good, though i should mention that a few of the dishes sound so dull i haven't even tried them. but only a few, and that's true of any cookbook. but all that is beside the point, since this book is worth FAR more than $16.95 for one recipe alone: the spinach lasagna bechamel. it's just ridiculously good, and you will make it over and over, whether you're veggie or not (i am not). if only for that recipe, you can not miss with this cookbook and i highly recommend it.

4 out of 5 stars Genuine "there's more than brown rice and broccoli" cookbook.......1999-02-25

Anyone who searched in the 80's for vegetarian recipes found a consistent diet of macrobiotics, imitation meatloaves and pasta recipes. Even the original (wonderful) Molly Katzen books were lacking in the divine. "New Recipes from Moosewood" seemed a true breakthrough to me. Try their salad dressings, try their tofu burgers and tofu falafel. Above all, try the bulgar wheat casserole with feta, zucchini and tomato, the Japanese eggplant and tempeh and YOU MUST NOT MISS THE EGGPLANT STUFFED WITH CURRIED POTATOES AND VEGETABLES. In most, if not all, recipes, double the spices. Even visitors to the restaurant have described the food as somewhat bland. For instance, for tofu burgers (baked, freezable, and miles above any other "veggy" burger I've run into, use all the spices and half the tofu. And MAKE THEIR PITA BREAD!!

They would have done well to omit the dessert section. Common recipes, tending toward the heavy and sweet(Honey Cake, pound cake, fruit cobblers, and so on.).

Leans heavily on cheeses (which a creative chef can substitute out, especially with the low fat cheeses available now, 12 years after the book was written) and is light on vegan. But you can't go truly meatless and maintain the sensuality of food without this book.

MOOSEWOOD was listed by the New York Times as one of the top ten best-selling cookbooks of all time, and no wonder. With her sophisticated, easy-to-prepare vegetarian recipes, charming pen-and-ink drawings, hand lettering, and conversational tone, Mollie introduced millions to a more healthful, natural way of cooking. This edition preserves the major revisions and additions that Mollie made in 1992, adding 5 new recipes from Mollie's current repertoire and 16 pages of beautiful color food photography. This is the ideal vegetarian cookbook with recipes from around the world. It has many familiar and everyday recipes which makes it a great reference for the forgetful. As well, it has unique and interesting recipes which I continue to try. I have given it as a gift to a niece just learning to cook as well as a brother who needs to eat healthier food. Each recipe has simple instructions, an estimated time of preparation and most have variations to allow you to be creative. It has catagories of soups, salads, sauces and dips, baked goods, entrees and desserts as well as primers on low fat, dairy and egg substitutions and explainations of ingredients, cooking utensils and techniques. If you shop at natural food stores or the co-op, this is a great reference.

This cookbook was recommended by my sister, whom I trust when it comes to healthy eating.

I got the cookbook and noticed immediately it has NO nutrional analysis of the recipes.

I am a heart patient, focused on reducing my cholesterol and sodium.

In order to get nutrional analysis of each recipe, I picked 4 that looked good and entered them into my Master Cookbook program. I was stunned by the amounts of cholesterol and sodium in these recipes.

As a result, I will be returning the cookbook. "Vegetarian" recipes like these are not necessarily healthy, although many of them are low in calories, this is not the entire health picture.

5 out of 5 stars The Vegetarian Bible!.......2007-08-02

I consider the Moosewood Cookbook to be my vegetarian bible. Any vegetarian cook must own this cookbook! Mollie Katzen's first book is my favorite of all her cookbooks, and I have yet to try a recipe in this book that wasn't delicious (and I've tried almost all the recipes). It is great to know you can try a new recipe and be guaranteed to have a delicious outcome. Recipes also include cooking and preparation time tables, which I find very helpful when choosing a recipe. Her soups are exceptional and easy to prepare (definitely try the Lentil and Gypsy soup recipes). I would caution, though, that being her first book - and written in a less health conscious era - there is a lot of dairy in many of the recipes, especially the dessert and entrée sections. Vegans will find many of the recipes to have dairy. That being said, it is still worth buying even if you are vegan because there are many dairy free recipes, or Katzen provides substitutions such as soy milk as options. The second edition of the original Moosewood Cookbook was also revised to reduce the fat/dairy in many of the recipes. My vegan favorites in this cookbook are tabouli, hummus, and many of the vegetable soups. This cookbook will not disappoint vegetarians and meat eaters alike.

I'm not a vegetarian, but I do try to limit the amount of meat I eat, so I was delighted to recieve this cookbook as a gift. I've had limited success with it, though. Generally, I find the recipes to be rather labor-intensive and not good enough to be worth the effort. If you are a strict vegetarian, I think you'd find the effort more worthwhile, since you're limited in the ingredients you can use in your cooking.

Favorite recipe: tostadas. Her refried bean recipe is the best I've had.

Worst: Apricot-almond bread. It sounded wonderful, but I have a hard time believing she tested this recipe. She says to bake it for 90 minutes. I took it out of the oven after 75 minutes and it was so overbaked that it nearly tasted like charcoal (and it's not because my oven was too hot--I have an oven thermometer). A sad waste of my dried apricots and almonds.

I've had this cookbook for years. I've used it so much that it is falling apart. I love the recipes. I love Mollie's casual style that encourages creativity with the recipes. I love the pictures and hand lettering. I wholeheartedly recommend this cookbook to anyone who is considering buying it.

In the standard excellent style of the Moosewood cookbooks the Recipeasel comes through. The recipes are easy, straightforward and fantastic. A great introduction to the Moosewood style or a nice compliment to their other collections, either way it's just great. Makes an excellent gift! (That's how I got mine).
