2 out of 5 stars Good if you're into color management and 3rd party software (other than PSCS).......2005-06-22

The book is full of examples using numerous (and sometimes pricey) 3rd party software and plugins for photoshop. Color management for monitors, printing, and B&W and infrared were focuses of this book, with SEVERAL chapters on B&W alone. Ther was also a lot on printing with your own inkjet printer (most of us use 3rd party professional printing services). The last parts of the book go over making "digital art" or complete collages and pics with photoshop (not photography at all), and the last section deals with turning your photos into paintings using filters.

The description of most everything is pretty broad in nature, and when discussing sharpening (always a hot topic), the suggestion is to "Use USM and keep the pixel radius and threshold pretty low, while changing the % to get the desired effect". That's about the 1 sentence on sharpening without using some 3rd party PS plugin.

Overall, not recommended. I am still looking for a good all-in-one photography book.

          5 out of 5 stars Wow!.......2005-05-28

First off, I'm an extremely amateur photographer, so I want to own up to that right away, since I realize that most of the people who buy this book are likely to be professional photographers. I'm not going to do a normal review to discuss the relevant chapter info either. The publisher's official write-up is better for that sort of thing, in my opinion. What I will say is this: I was slow to enter into the world of digital photography. I had the regular middle-range inexpensive digital camera, but whenever I went anywhere that I knew the pictures were going to really matter, I still lugged my SLR with all the great lens choices and accessories.

Last month, after reading through this book as mostly a curiosity, I took the plunge and bought a digital SLR. This book makes you truly appreciate the benefits of digital photography and the flexibility you can achieve through digital that you just can't get with your film negatives. I want to stress in advance that I am not an "advanced" digital photographer, but I still found this book to be beneficial and instrumental in bringing me around to this format. I wouldn't have wanted a basic book for this, since I would have outgrown that with the first round of pictures I took with my new camera.

Now, I'm in the process of working back through this book as I play with my new camera, and I couldn't be happier with the results. I definitely recommend this book for anyone who is the type of person who craves a little extra know-how when it comes to getting the most out of your work or hobby. If you are an amateur like me, don't be intimidated by the fact that this title was written for professionals who have advanced skills. When it comes to photographs, learning from the professional level is exactly what you want to do. Your pictures can't help but benefit.

If you enjoy historcal based comics, this is a great comic for you. The story lines are all interesting and the comics are well drawn. I like that the stories span different cultures and different time periods, not going in a striaght line of time, but going in order. I espeaiclly like the vistion of the future, and if you are interested int he back ground of the witchblade and how that affects sarah, this is a great book to read. Highly recamended.

5 out of 5 stars Great continuation of first book in series.......2002-10-23

This book continues the story of the courtship between Julia Hollis and Vicar Andrew Phelps. Andrew originally moved to Gresham to get his oldest daughter, Elizabeth, away from the man she loved in London when they learned that he was unfaithful to her. Elizabeth is now seeing a young curate in a nearby village when the other man finds her again - he appears to have changed his ways and asks her forgiveness, and also takes on the position of schoolmaster in Gresham. You will also enjoy the courtships of other locals, including bossy Mrs. Kingston and the obnoxious lord who owns the cheese factory.

4 out of 5 stars Great series to read.......2002-07-26

This series is a lot of fun to read and full of interesting characters and their relationships. At first it was hard to keep track of so many people, but I got hooked on the village of Gresham and its people. Biblical truths and interesing people had me going back for more. I just wish there were 10 books in this series so that I would have more to look forward to. I really enjoyed these books very much!

            5 out of 5 stars A wonderful book!.......2001-11-27

I highly recommend this book. It is really good. I enjoy
all of Lawana Blackwell's books very much. The stories are
always entertaining and full of love. They are all very decent
stories and very enjoyable to read.

5 out of 5 stars another lovely visit to Gresham.......2001-07-01

At the end of book one, Julia and Andrew have decided to wait for several months before their wedding. Book two deals with the time period of their engagement. Quite a lot happens in this few months: both Laurel Phelps and Philip Hollis are now old enough to attend boarding school, a mysterious stranger and his young son come to Gresham, the prickly Mrs. Kingston finds herself being courted by none other than the Squire himself, and Mercy Sanders dreams of a way out of her impoverished and underappreciated lifestyle. Elizabeth Phelps, declaring herself finally over her broken heart from book one, concentrates on her relationship with Paul Treves, knowing that it will lead to marriage. But as their relationship progresses, so do Elizabeth's doubts. She really is not sure if she loves him as a betrothed wife should, and she seeks out the advice of her future stepmother. While Elizabeth is still struggling with her questions about her future with Paul, an unexpected visitor comes to Gresham. Will he be able to win Elizabeth's heart, and, more important, to convince the Vicar that he is worthy of her attention? Will Philip ever be able to adjust to the cruel taunts and pranks played by the older boys at boarding school? Will the mysterious Mr. Langford let down his guard to the good people of Gresham and be able to become a true father to young Thomas? Does the Lord really have a husband in mind for Mercy? Will Mrs. Kingston let the Squire break through her barriers and be able to love again? Once again, Blackwell has portrayed a lively village full of romance, family values, and the assurance that God sees his flock through everything in The Courtship of the Vicar's Daughter. This was a wonderful additon to the series, and I am looking forward to my next visit to Gresham.

            3 out of 5 stars Fairly Enjoyable.......2001-01-27

This is not my favorite novel to read, although Lawana Blackwell has done a well job weaving several main characters lives and love stories into one main story. It is interesting how they all know each other and some help the others out. Reading this novel made me feel as if I were in Gresham myself.

            5 out of 5 stars A great read. A gifted author........2002-02-08

I enjoyed every minute of the time spent reading this series. Lawanna Blackwell is a gifted author who spends the requisite time to craft novels that are encouraging, heart warming and true to life. Unlike so many authors who write in this genre, Ms. Blackwell's work does not assault/insult the intelligence of her readership.

I have read every book of hers published to date and each leaves me waiting with bated breath for the next. If the reader of this review seeks trashy and poorly written romances published under the guise of "christian, inspirational romance", then Ms. Blackwell wouldn't be the author of choice. If, however, he/she is seeking fiction that is based on sound theology, that is entertaining yet substantive, then I strongly recommend this author's body of work.

            5 out of 5 stars Gresham Chronicles.......2001-10-17

These three books are a joy to read! Characters are well
developed and believable. There is joy and love in the stories,
since the reader anticipates happy endings and moral dilemmas
being resolved. Lawana Blackwell has a gift of writing. She
has also written the Victorian Serenade series of 4 books and
Book 1 of her London series. Keep writing, Lawana. I am
greatly looking forward to Book 2 of the London set, and more.
Readers can identify with her plots and empathize with
            character's moral decisions. Wonderful writer!

This first book in the Gresham Chronicles revolves around a little country town and its inhabitants. The characters are well developed and woven delightfully together into this series. The reader is privy to the characters thoughts and emphasizes with them as they go about their daily lives. I highly recommend it and you are sure to continue with the next two in the series by Ms. Blackwell. Enoyable reading!

            Book Description

This is the long-awaited collection of Fred Secombe's three vicar stories: Hello Vicar!, A Comedy of Clerical Errors and The Crowning Glory. Newly appointed as vicar of Pontywen in South Wales, Fred throws himself into the responsibilities his post entails. The new vicar finds himself in trouble with a curate of his own, the Reverend Barnabas Webster, a man in love with status. He gets entangled in an argument over a sermon condemning corruption in the town council; and he counsels a young organist who behaves too affectionately toward a choirboy. Fred's happy marriage to the capable doctor Eleanor is a source of comfort and hilarity, especially when the rural deanery decides to venture into sex education, with Eleanor placed in the unenviable position of giving the talk.

            5 out of 5 stars Delightful Series!.......2006-02-23

The stories by Reverend Secombe are truly delightful to read! He's an excellent author. After a few pages, you become attached to the characters in his books. These are down to earth stories about being an English pastor near end of WWII. All the wit and humor is very tastefully done.

You must read the "Chronicles of a Curate" series, also by Secombe, before reading this book, as this is the sequel to that series.

I highly recommend reading Secombe's books to everyone!

                  Book Description

Fourth in the Barsetshire Chronicles, FRAMLEY PARSONAGE was published in 1860. In it the values of a Victorian gentleman, the young clergyman Mark Robarts, are put to the test.

Like much fiction of 19th century England, FRAMLEY PARSONAGE concerns property, status, family and the conventions. In it Trollope captures the essence of Victorian England.

The Barsetshire Chronicles include THE WARDEN, BARCHESTER TOWERS, DOCTOR THORNE, FRAMLEY PARSONAGE, THE SMALL HOUSE AT ALLINGTON and THE LAST CHRONICLE OF BARSET.

It will be necessary that I should say a word or two of some of the people named in the few preceding pages, and also of the localities in which they lived. Of Lady Lufton herself enough, perhaps, has been written to introduce her to my readers. The Framley property belonged to her son; but as Lufton Park--an ancient ramshackle place in another county--had heretofore been the family residence of the Lufton family.

5 out of 5 stars Painting yourself into a corner.......2007-09-11

In this novel we find one Mark Robarts, clergyman and parson of Framley. He is an ambitious young man desirous of rising in society. He is friends since childhood with Lord Lufton who makes an unfortunate introduction in the person of Sowerby who seduces poor Mark into signing his name to a debt which the parson cannot afford.

Mark Robarts's father passes away early on and his sister Lucy joins Mark and his wife at Framley Parsonage where Lord Lufton falls in love with her. Two more couples form and while I won't reveal how any of these relationships work out it wouldn't really matter if I did. Trollope's plots usually vary from bad to good but they are hardly ever of any importance anyway. What is important in a Trollope novel isn't what the plot is or how it concludes, it's how it works itself out and how Trollope paints his characters.

The characters in Framley Parsonage are a little whiter and blacker than those of the previous novels in the Barsetshire series. Sowerby is by far and away the blackest and Trollope was so effective in painting him black that towards the end he clumsily appeals directly to the reader and assures us Sowerby isn't really as bad a fellow as he seems.

Dr. Thorne and his niece Mary Gresham appear (from Doctor Thorne) as do the Grantlys and the Proudies (from Barchester Towers). Lucy Robarts is a fascinating woman even more headstrong here than Mary Gresham was in Doctor Thorne, but my favourite character in this novel is Lady Lufton. She opposes her son's desire to court and marry Lucy but does so politely and with consideration. At the same time, Lucy behaves in way Lady Lufton can only find irreproachable. So of course, not having anything with which to reproach Lucy, Lady Lufton has nothing with which to oppose her son's suit. And yet she does. How will this three-sided battle of wills, pitting Lord Lufton against his mother against Lucy against her suitor, resolve itself?

Well, that would be telling, wouldn't it? Let's just say that Lady Lufton has painted herself into a corner and let us leave it at that.

All in all, another fine example of Trollope's mastery of moral calculus.

5 out of 5 stars sticks to your ribs.......2006-09-04

I'm reading the Barset series in order and have not been disappointed yet. Framley Parsonage is substantive, richer than The Warden, more serious than Barchester Towers, similar in much to Doctor Thorne, and slightly more intricate than DT. I enjoyed the introduction of a healthy dose of political gamesmanship in the form of descriptions of the parliamentary machinations and electioneering strategies. One also learns how to conduct financial shennanigans with horses, farmland, and public forests. The characters in FP are textured and almost always believable; there's only a few caricatures here. As always, the Everyman's edition is accompanied by a lucid introduction and helpful timetable.

5 out of 5 stars Transcendent beauty .......2006-07-01

As a sixty-two year old professor of English literature and a compulsive reader, I have read many, many novels in my life, and most of Trollope's (for they are, indeed, habit-forming), but this one is perhaps my favorite. I have not read it since 1982, but when I open the cover and look at the fly-leaf, I feel the special delight that I felt when I first read it. Like Austen's Emma, it is one of those perfect books you should not miss.

5 out of 5 stars From the Guardian of the Human Heart..........2004-02-18

If you shy away from Victorian novels because you had to read A TALE OF TWO CITIES in high school, it is time to give these treasures another try. Admit it, you are a bit older now. So are these books by Dickens, Disraeli, Thackary, Austen, the Bronte sisters, and, yes, my personal favorite, the great man himself, Anthony Trollope.

Why read something that was written a century and a half ago? Because Trollope knew more about the human psyche than Freud and Jung put together, and wrote about it not with a clinician's jaundiced eye, but with incredible tenderness and love. And entertainingly, to boot!

If you have been reading the Jan Karon novels about life in a small North Carolina highlands town, as it revolves around an Episcopal priest named Father Tim and his colorful parishioners, well!--this is where it all began. A book version of finding the source of the Nile.

Trollope began what Karon has revised and restyled so engagingly. Trollope invented the "church and town" novel, with what have become known as his Bartchester Series of novels, all centering around the doings of a fictitious cathedral town and its outlying countryside.

Not the first in the series, (it is the fourth but perhaps the best), FRAMLEY PARSONAGE traces the faith, home and political lives of a number of intertwining families. Here you will find love, ambition, political maneuvering, gambling debts, pretension, humility, envy, forgiveness, hate, romance. If it sounds like a slice of modern life-it is. We and the Victorians are so much alike; the human condition does not change.

In this delightful mix of clerical, political and romantic intrigue, you will meet everyone from the alarmingly meddlesome bishop's wife, Mrs. Proudie, to the original dizzy blond, Griselda Grantly. All set in the green countryside and the bustling streets of London.

The story centers around the bright, popular pastor, Mark Robarts and his charming wife, but it is his sister, Lucy, who will capture your heart as perhaps the loveliest of heroines in any novel.

I hope you are intrigued enough to be convinced that there is more to Nineteenth Century British Literature than SILAS MARNER. Moreover, I hope you will read this and the other Trollope works. You may recall that in addition to being one of the most successful and acclaimed novelist of all times, Trollope was also a successful and acclaimed civil servant-his "day job" was with the British postal system-he invented the corner mailbox. His more than 40 novels and outstanding autobiography were written in his very disciplined "spare time" in which he produced a specific number of pages every morning before departing punctually for his office. Not only a genius of time management, Trollope was and is a guardian of the human heart.

What? You say you would rather start at the beginning of the Bartchester series? By all means! But if you do not, try FRAMLY PARSONAGE first. Dip your toe in there-for you cannot dip your toe into any of his books without emerging the better, having done so.

If you find this review helpful you might want to read some of my other reviews, including those on subjects ranging from biography to architecture, as well as religion and fiction.

                  4 out of 5 stars A Good Woman.......2002-10-17

Although this book is centered on the matter of Mark Robarts and his moral dilemma, we also encounter his sister, Lucy. She is one who is presented to us as a real Christian woman. She takes on herself the care of Mrs Crawley who is suffering with a deadly fever. Lucy is the ideal woman, beautiful, charitable, caring. She deserves the very best and is rewarded for her efforts by becoming Lady Lufton. Mark on the other hand, suffers a great deal largely from ill-advised friendship with Sowerby. Mark wants to achieve status by ill-advised social connections. Thankfully he is saved from ruin by his friends.
