Customer Reviews:
A worthwhile addition to any literature lover or student's library.......2007-01-03
When taking my first Creative Writing class, A Writer's Country was one of the required texts I had to pick up. As it says on it's cover, A Writer's Country is a collection of fiction and poetry by some reknowned authors. James Joyce, Sharon Olds, Anne Sexton, Emily Dickinson, William Faulkner, Langston Hughes, Tobias Wolff, Ernest Hemmingway, Stephen Crane, Anton Chekov, Flannery O'Connor, and Robert Frost are among the authors whose works have been compiled here by editors Jeff Knorr and Tim Schell, and there are even some brief biographies in the back of the book to boot. The only real downside for A Writer's Country is the price, which for what you get here may seem a little steep, but generally speaking you can find this text for cheaper. That aside, this can serve as a handy reference guide for literature lovers or aspiring writers, and it's a worthwhile addition to either's library.

Book Description
Surprisingly, this is the first full-scale scholarly commentary on the Eclogues to appear in this century. These ten short pastorals are among the best known poems in Latin literature. Clausen's commentary provides a comprehensive guide to both the poems and the considerable scholarship
surrounding them. There are short introductions to each poem, as well as a general introduction to the Eclogues as a whole.

Fantastic Reality: Louise Bourgeois and a Story of Modern Art (October Books)

Amazon.com
One of this century's preeminent artists, Louise Bourgeois recently was the subject of a major one-person exhibition at New York's Museum of Modern Art, and she represented the United States in the 1993 Venice Biennale. This exquisitely designed volume, which includes 133 color reproductions, is a testimony to the importance of the act of drawing to this highly autobiographical artist, who is known primarily for her sculptures. Produced over the course of 50 years, the drawings are seen side by side with Bourgeois' own observations about her personal life, her work, and the genesis and sources of certain works, offering a very intimate vision of Bourgeois as a woman and as an artist, as well as insight into the creative act of making art.
Customer Reviews:
Too die for........2004-12-21
If anyone gets the pleasure of seeing this book in the flesh, you will be sweetly content. And any other Louise Bourgeois book has nothing on it. The delicate mono-coloured drawing inspire curious thoughts in to the excentric mind of the artist. A must have, if you can get your hands on one.
A glimpse into the mind of a great artist..........1998-11-18
Browsing through this book of sketches is like reading Bourgeois' personal diary. These drawings seem to be the ones she made only for herself, to figure things out and generate more ideas. This is not her "finished" work, so don't expect "LB's Greatest Hits", but any true fan of this artist will delight in seeing her sketchbooks come to life and reading her thoughts and memories of the drawings. Full of rich spontaneity & wit.

Book Description
Perceptual drawing, in which one renders the physical world as it appears to an observer, is the focus of this new text for the introductory drawing course. Drawing from Observation offers a balanced mix of hands-on technique and perceptual theory while making a compelling argument for the long-term value of studying perception-based drawing.
Customer Reviews:
Drawing from Observation by Brian Curtis [Paperback].......2005-07-01
Wonderful book for any artist; should be a required for all artist's library. Great reference as well as instuctional guide. Well organized, each aspect of drawing is fully covered, well written and appropiately illustrated.
Great textbook........2003-07-06
As a teacher of drawing, I have read many books on the subject. This book is the only one I would use as a textbook. I would agree with all the previous reviews but would only comment on the one review from the budding artist who felt the book is confusing and has too much art history for someone who only wants to learn to draw. I come to this book with over two decades of art experience so maybe that is why I find it so interesting, but even if the history is skipped and you read only the practical explanations and do the lessons in the back of the book, you will learn to draw from observation, as this book promises. The book is not meant to be read in two weeks. Learning to draw takes hard work and invested time.
great for design visualization.......2002-12-25
This text is the front-runner in our search for a text to teach visualization drawing for computer graphics students. Its methodology for perceiving and translating form and space into drawing very nicely parallels the principles used in computer modeling. The section on perspective clearly presents principles in such a way as to merge intuitive and analytical understanding. This is a hallmark of the book in general. In addition to practical clarity the text adds historical and theoretical perspectives to round out one's understanding of drawing. I appreciate this because, in the case of our program, it helps us to link the traditions of human visualization from ancient times to the computer age.
Fine Art's Studio Class in a Book.......2002-06-14
Best text, projects, and examples that I have ever seen in a text. A must have for schools and universities (chosen for Drawing 1 and Drawing 2 text).
Teaches you to really look at the object your drawing. Excellent for those who think that they could never draw.
Clarity of Required Concepts.......2002-06-10
The simplification and clarity of the needed concepts to trascribe from a three dimensional space to a two dimensional plane are clearly eplained in this new book.
It has been a great experience to teach with this new text because the student is able to read the concept before he comes to class and therefore able to better understand the concept at hand.
The progressive format of the book from gesture to clock angles and chiaroscuro are well illustrated and clear. The perspective chapters are to me an addendum to what is done from the start with the square and rectangular forms. The historical aspects that are weaved into the text set the book apart for the student of fine art who is interested and needs this reference. I find that the materials chapter at the start of the book also set up a sequence of answers that are important to the beginning student of fine art. The section on "Drawing Assignments" is of particular interest to those didactic artists who will work on their own as well as the instructor who needs refernces for student exercises.
One suggestion on my behalf is the incorporation of a "CD" to augment the in class lectures and help the student visually.
I have been using this book for one semester and have adopted it for my College. Good work Mr. Curtis

Book Description
Alec is a brilliant and insightful romp through Eddie Campbell's own life, and it represents one of the best, and first, works in the autobiographical-comics genre. In it, we witness Eddie's progression from "beer to wine," or to put it more accurately, his inevitable maturation through time. Whether it's tales of his early pub-crawlin' days, or glimpses into his current private life with "wifey" and kids, there are "truths" here that transcend the factual and paint a picture of the way life should be. This collection, numbered at 51 in The Comics Journal's top comics of the century, has been much sought after by collectors of the serious graphic novel as well as readers new to the idea of comics.

Customer Reviews:
An Inspiration.......2001-01-07
It's extremely gratifying to see Eddie Campbell's Alec collected again and available on Amazon. I remember reading these comics back in the mid-80's. Self-published by photocopier, often with hand-coloured covers, they redefined for me what comics were about, and what they could be about. These intimate, real-life, semi-auto-biographical stories of a British guy, his mates, his girlfriends and his life were a revelation and have inspired a generation of comics writers and artists. If you have any interest in serious comics, then you should buy this book.
Book Description
A hilarious guide to life from a man who has "lived large and fallen hard--lost every job I ever had, messed up everybody I've ever dated, been kicked out of every institution I've ever been in"--and still survived; offering observations on courage ("Lots of guys brag they'd fight off anything to save their woman. Yeah, right--there is no sense in both us dying"), discipline ("If you've got to get whupped, your father is the man. Mothers don't stop until you're bleeding to death"), money ("Before computers, checks were great...local ones took fourteen days to clear"), men and women ("If there were no women in the world, men would be naked, driving trucks, living in dirt"), underwear ("Women, do not buy your men bikini underpants"), love ("If you can get a car with no money down, you can get a boyfriend or girlfriend"), marriage ("There is no compromise, you either go to the basketball game or you go to a movie you hate"), divorce ("there are no Betty Ford clinics for strung-out lovers. You have to go cold turkey"), dieting ("I would be hanging out at McDonald's, tapping on the window: 'Don't throw out those fries!'"), parenting ("When they caught Jeffrey Dahmer, his mom was protective: 'He always had a healthy appetite...'"), technology, and much more.

Sinbad is a good human being.......2006-11-23
I have never read this book, and frankly have seen little of Sinbad's humor. But what I did witness was the CNN video of his interview responding to Michael Richard's racial atrocity at the comedy club. He demonstrated that he is a very intelligent, sensitive, and thoughtful human being. I appreciated in the past that he is a clean comedian and actor, but underneath it, I am so impressed to see the decent person undeneath. I would buy this book if for no other reason than to endorse the class and style that Sinbad exhibits. I couldn't figure out how to get this message to him personally, so this venue will have to suffice in expressing my gratitude. Signed - a new Sinbad Fan
The most intentionally funny book ever written........2006-08-25

Laugh a minute along with lessons in life. Awesome!.......2004-06-26
This is just great humor and great insight from an awesome comedian. He most certainly delivers the hilarity, but there are a few somber times in the book where he is real, very real and takes a serious approach. He speaks highly of his dad, which I respect for 2 reasons. For one, if you have an awesome dad, like I do, and Sinbad does, you should express it. The second reason is because like myself, his dad is a preacher, and wanted nothing but the best for his boy.
I guess I would suggest to read the book, not buy it on audio, because the person doing that might expect a stand-up comedy performance, and that isn't what this is about. With that said, however, it is very funny most of the time with the Sinbad humor that people all across the country have grown to love! If you love Sinbad, you'll love reading his book. He also teaches us lessons throughout the book about not taking ourselves too seriously. Have some fun while reading this book!
GREAT.......2003-08-20
You know a book is good when you are laughing about the back cover. This book is great! I highly recommend this book to anyone!
