Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars For any level racer.......2004-05-31

Whether you just started racing in your local club's sunset series, or you compete seriously in a One Design fleet, this is a book you should get your hands on. It answers all those annoying little questions you always seem to forget about on race day, or feel too sheepish to ask for fear of coming off as unexperienced as you might be. Perry answers most of them quite clearly and simply. He offers a lot of advice to bring your skill along. For the beginning racer it's an awful lot to take in and much of it will be confusing, until you start racing more and see the situations arise. For anyone who is looking to make racing a part of (or a bigger part of) their life, this is a book they should have on the shelf and be ready to go back to over and over again.

5 out of 5 stars Great anecdotes from a top sailor.......2000-08-16

This is a great book and I recommend it to everybody that isinterested in racing sailboats. Dave Perry has competed at the highest levels of the sport, and this collection of anecdotes underscores his experiences. Compared to Stuart Walker's muddled and confusing writing, Dave Perry's examples and experiences are valuable and clear, and I am also encouraged by the fact that all of the situations are in one design sailboats...

4 out of 5 stars A very thorough look at sailing in one designs.......1997-10-28

When I meet someone who has shown a strong interest in sailing in the International Dragon class and is looking for some way to impove their understanding of all aspects of what makes one of these boats go quickly this is the one that I recommend. It is covers tactics, rules, boat and crew preparation, sail and rig setup. The one aspect that is not included is team and match racing. A great book for the advanced to intermediate competior.

Rock Music may have been the dominant youth culture of the 1960's and the decades that immediately followed, but since the arrival of the 1990's the new sport culture has - to a suprisingly large degree - replaced it.

Today sports personalities are the new role models and thus are cultural icons in their own right. Their equipment - sneakers, mountain bikes, uniforms - have become the socially defining objects.

Winning takes an incisive look at the key elements in sports design and examines why (and exactly how) sport has pervaded contemporary culture.

As the second millennium approaches, the age-old art of making jewellery is changing. No longer the preserve of master craftsman, who brought passion and skill to their trade, it has become the realm of artists, architects and even poets. This title offers an insight into the future of this art, with descriptions of the various schools of the worldwide styles of each designer.

              Book Description

Jewelry art in Japan is, surprisingly, mainly a twentieth-century development. Classical Japanese jewelry was never made simply for ornament, but had a practical purpose, with beautifully crafted belt toggles, fans, and haircombs being worn for social and religious occasions. In the last few years, however, a whole new studio jewelry scene has emerged in Japan, producing objects of astounding quality.

Featuring 200 beautifully illustrated examples of the very finest work by 50 contemporary artists, and in particular the revolutionary materials being used, including lipstick, ash, and naturally decaying naphthalene, Contemporary Japanese Jewellery is the first book to be published outside Japan that charts the trends and developments in this growing area of interest.

With a historical overview of the Japanese jewelry-making tradition and its social context, as well as twentieth-century developments as Japan became increasingly influenced by the West, Contemporary Japanese Jewellery will be indispensable to anyone interested in modern developments in jewelry-making, and of great appeal to the broader craft and design communities.

              4 out of 5 stars Keep your trash - it's potential jewelry.......2004-02-27

This book is a catalogue of jewelry featured in an exhibition that toured the United Kingdom accompanying the "Japan 2001" festival. The pictures of personal ornamentation in this book will test how you define `jewelry.' Simplicity is thematic, giving the viewer an impression of movement in the swoops and curves shaping each piece. For example, ear ornaments do not hang from the earlobe but, instead, are shaped to the ear's interior, like a hearing aide, with a hole made for sounds to enter.

Teruo Akatsu makes beads from dust, threading them onto stainless steel wire. I surely have a surplus of this raw material at my home. (You might recall that our San Antonio artist Sherry Fotopoulos has used dryer lint to create sculptures.)

Tomomi Arata uses sand, enamel, silver, and gemstones to create rings that looks like they've been lost in an ancient shipwreck.

Hiromasa Hashimoto strings liquid silver bugle beads on silicone cord to make a geometric necklace. Yuta Hataya fashions bracelets checkered by brass and silver.

Mikiko Minewaki is the ultimate recycler, making rings from the ends of cigarette lighters and colored plastics.

The above examples show just a few unusual materials used by these inventive artists, but you must see the book to know how the materials are rendered into spectacular jewelry ornaments.

Lyta Hall's son Daniel is taken from her. She shows that, when a superhero, she wasn't called Fury for nothing.

Finding her mythological namesakes, she decides to put an end to Morpheus, the Lord of Dream. Morpheus is not without his own plans and defenses, however, but a promise made to a former servant costs him dearly.

5 out of 5 stars The Kindly Ones.......2007-01-23

This is my favorite volume of "The Sandman," by far (I still haven't read the last one, so I can't say it's my all time favorite yet). The artwork is very different from previous volumes, featuring Mark Hempel's work, which is very abstract, especially compared to the more realistic styles of other volumes. Still, I think it was well suited for such an emotional part of the story, because the expressions and moods of each character were excellently portrayed.

I don't see why a fan of "The Sandman" would ever not want to own this volume. It features the return of several past characters, including Rose Walker, Lyta Hall and her son, and Lucifer, among others. By tying in virtually all the previous volumes, it can be considered the climax of "The Sandman" storyline.

It's beautiful, poetic, heart-wrenching, and colorful; a masterpiece I can't help but flip through every time I pick it up.

              5 out of 5 stars Don't read the introduction!.......2006-08-22

A friend bought me the first Sandman book a few weeks ago, and upon finishing it, I immediately went out and bought the entire rest of the series. They are all wonderful, but this one is my favorite. It ties together all of the other story arcs - both the larger arcs and the stand-alone short issues - into a cohesive climax that is gorgeously written and drawn.

One thing: DO NOT READ FRANK MCCONNELL'S INTRODUCTION UNTIL AFTER YOU'VE READ THE NOVEL. There is a MAJOR spoiler on the first page of the intro; I was so mad about it that I started yelling out loud at the book. In one of the earlier volumes - I forget which - the intro contained spoilers, so Gaiman moved it to the end of the book and wrote his own short intro. I don't know why they couldn't have done that here.

Don't start with this book; start at the beginning with Preludes & Nocturnes and work your way here. It is beautiful, mythical, heart-rending. And don't read that intro!

5 out of 5 stars Morpheus Makes His Choice (aka Gaiman's Masterpiece).......2006-08-12

Neil Gaiman once attempted to summarize the Sandman series in one sentence:

"The king of dreams learns one must change or die and then makes his decision."

As Morpheus makes that decision in the course of The Kindly Ones, it forms the climax for the entire series. And, what a climax it is.

The Kindly Ones is the story of the various "enemies" that Dream has accrued during the Sandman series (including Lucifer, Loki, the Puck and the diminutive witch, Thessaly) as they, either through conspiracy or just happenstance, take action to destroy him. The largest threat comes from Lyta Hall who, believing Dream to have kidnapped her son, sets out on a mission to envoke the wrath of the Furies against him.

This is not an easy volume to read, necessarily, though it is maybe the best of the lot. Amazingly, Gaiman picks up characters and plots from almost all of the works that had come before (some just get brief cameos, but are still represented) and weaves them into one whole story that burns to a moving conclusion.

If you're a fan of Sandman already, I don't need to tell you to read this volume. If you've just stumbled on this review, however, and are wondering about it, let me tell you that the Sandman is one of the greatest comics, ever, and compares very well to other great literature in any medium.

Perhaps the best book in a five star series.

              5 out of 5 stars Don't judge a book..........2006-05-30

...or criticize a house until it's been completely built.
I was lucky enough to hear a discussion between Neil Gaiman and Marc Hempel about this book at Balticon 40 which was held on Memorial Day weekend, 2006. Neil said that this story arc got the most hate mail of all the Sandman work. Neil said that he didn't do any kind of recap while the books were coming out from month-to-month because he didn't feel it was necessary. The funny thing is that this Sandman collection sells the best. I suggested that people were too impatient, that they got the first issue of the arc and thought: "Hey!! There's this big hole in the ground!! That's not a building!!" Then, they got the second issue of the arc and thought: "Okay, now there's a foundation..but it's STILL not a building!!" The final outcome of the collaborative work between Gaiman and Hempel is proof that they built something that a lot of people like to visit.

              Buy the hardcover...

...you'll be re-visiting THIS particular literary building often.

5 out of 5 stars The Marvelous Master of Dzogchen.......2004-11-29

This is my favorite book of the 3 volume trilogy by 14th century Dzogchen master Longchen Rabjam or Longchenpa. He's also called: Klong-chen-rab-'byams, Drime Wozer, and Kunkyab Ngoggi Wangpo. He is very possibly the greatest Dzogchen master of all time--excluding the ones who may be mythological. It includes the much repeated metaphor of the moon reflected in the mountain lake (though I forget which of the 3 books it was in). This trilogy is a great classic. Also read the recent translations of some of Longchenpa's "Seven Treasuries" though most have not yet been translated. For a book of excerpts from Longchenpa's many works, read "The Practice of Dzogchen" translated by Tulku Thondup. Well worth the effort. However, the present trilogy is far easier reading than the other works mentioned here. They are a good start for the student who has already read a couple of introductory texts on Dzogchen (and perhaps Kagyu Mahamudra).

Many say Geunther is a genius. I might agree. He has some extraordinary, unique perspectives, apparently born from many years of study, in both Tibetan as well as European philosophies. But a translator? It seems he fancies himself more a sort of "decoder," if you will, and his (sometimes lengthy) reasonings behind his peculiar, intense word choices often appear sound. Yet as the years go on, and students of this genre grow in there understanding of key terms, key-term translation is becoming more-and-more standardized, leaving his "translations" less-and-less accessible.

If you work at it, you can squeeze out many of the original Tibetan terms from his indexes, footnotes, etc., and thereby triangulate with the more commonly-used terms. -Somewhat tiresome if what you really want is a more direct translation, for use in a student-teacher situation for example. Furthermore, this book and the other two in the trilogy are much more commentary than translation. This is a shame, since Longchenpa himself wrote an auto-commentary to them.

That said, Guenther IS a great thinker, and if you would like to read Guenther, as opposed (in this case) to Longchenpa, then I'll say, this and all of the books I've read by him (some dozen) are truly fascinating. Very original and thought-provoking.

Maybe look for a translation elsewhere. -no offense, Herb.

5 out of 5 stars Kindly Bent to Ease Us.......1999-12-14

I have been reading wonderful books that help lead one to true emancipation, enlightenment, and self-acutalization.

Tibetan Buddhism expresses many sound psychological and personal paths to a life and death in peace.

This book, written by Longchenpa and translated by Herbert V. Guenther, is an excellent guide along the path of enlightenment introducing to us the mind of meditation. A few lines give you a tiny taste of what is in store for you: You are an individual who has become the site for the realization of limpid clearness and consummate perspicacity ... The main body is about pure awareness, encountered in the experience of Being by means of meditation involving pleasure, radiance, and non-dividedness. As sheer lucency, a pristine cognitiveness, defying any propositions about it; it rises in naturalness and togetherness.

I invite you to read each word; each word is most important; the message comes easy to the expansive mind.

The Kindly Ones is a powerful story with characters and prose to match.

The way Caroline Stickland writes makes the English language the most beautiful in the world.

I loved this book. I was gripped by it from beginning to end and really felt I was living in the 1860s while I was reading it. It's a retelling of the Greek myths about Helen of Troy and Agamemnon but it isn't necessary to know them. The story reads just as well as a straight historical novel set in the 19th century and there's a section at the back that shows how the events in the book match the ones in the myths.
The characters are three-dimensional and are written with an understanding of what makes people act as they do, even to the length of murder. ( The killing was heartrending and so was Kate's wedding and what happened to her afterwards. ) I cared about all of them, but most of all for Celia, Kate and Hermione and am glad I didn't live then when it was so easy for women to be trapped by what was expected of them. Some of the people are strongminded enough to make satisfying lives for themselves despite the difficulties and without showing the selfishness of Eleanor ( Helen ) whose elopement affects everyone around her.
The prose is poetic and the dialogue is in keeping with the times but completely natural and easy to read. The descriptions of the places are atmospheric and senuous, whether they are of the gardens and fountains of Damascus, plough-horses standing in a field in Dorset on a cold winter afternoon with a red sun setting behind them or cranes stalking on white sand-banks in India.
All the historical detail helps to give a vivid picture of what it was like to live then. I didn't know of the Christmas customs such as the games like Snappen-tongs the children played or the Ooser with its bull's horns prowling in the underground passages in the great house of Vauchurch to catch the maids.
This book has murder and romance and a real feeling for the times. It was the first by Stickland that I'd read. I'm looking forward to reading the others now.

This is one of my favorite books ever. Melissa Scott approaches science fiction with the eye for detail that is the hallmark of the best historical writers. We explore the world of Orestes with her characters, especially Captain Leith Morrigan and Trey Maturin. A stranger to Orestes, Captain Morrigan is drawn into a complex web of intrigue and war, while Trey, a licensed Mediator, is pulled into deadly fights between clan factions. This may seem like a typical plotline, but Scott handles it with the same kind of delicate detail one would expect from Mary Renault. (I re-read this book every year, just like the Persian Boy.) As the clan conflicts turns into open war, we are treated to a beautifully written escape and space travel sequence. (My heart is always in my mouth as Pipe Major makes her final lift from the field at Destiny!) Strongly written female characters are another plus in this hidden treasure!

I'm only a few weeks in, but am already a little disappointed. There are quotes, little anecdotes and "cute" stories that are hardly worth the flip. They all sound like you've heard them before and are, I'm sure, much more interesting when they are told first hand about kids you know. There are a few gems here and there to make you ponder. Perhaps Chicken Soup for the Mother's Soul would be a better bet? Still, it's fun to have something to flip each day.
