Book Description
Taking aim at the mostly male bastion of art theory and criticism, Mira Schor brings a maverick perspective and provocative voice to the issues of contemporary painting, gender representation, and feminist art. Writing from her dual perspective of a practicing painter and art critic, Schor’s writing has been widely read over the past fifteen years in Artforum, Art Journal, Heresies, and M/E/A/N/I/N/G, a journal she coedited. Collected here, these essays challenge established hierarchies of the art world of the 1980s and 1990s and document the intellectual and artistic development that have marked Schor’s own progress as a critic.
Bridging the gap between art practice, artwork, and critical theory, Wet includes some of Schor’s most influential essays that have made a significant contribution to debates over essentialism. Articles range from discussions of contemporary women artists Ida Applebroog, Mary Kelly, and the Guerrilla Girls, to "Figure/Ground," an examination of utopian modernism’s fear of the "goo" of painting and femininity. From the provocative "Representations of the Penis," which suggests novel readings of familiar images of masculinity and introduces new ones, to "Appropriated Sexuality," a trenchant analysis of David Salle’s depiction of women, Wet is a fascinating and informative collection.
Complemented by over twenty illustrations, the essays in Wet reveal Schor’s remarkable ability to see and to make others see art in a radically new light.

Vogue editor Diana Vreeland once said that no one in the 20th century had a greater influence on fashion than Erte, this desite the fact that he worked for a competitor, Harper's Bazaar. That's an indication of just how revolutionary his work was for the times. Working with virtually no direction to blunt his creativity, Erte published paintings and sketches of ingenious fashions that are as playful and lighthearted as they are luxurious and exquisite. He envisioned modern women (from 1915 to 1926) as goddesses, ultra-chic stars, children of nature, and totally feminine creatures to be adored and exalted. His fashions reflect this, individualistic and charming, colorful and startlingly functional. The 8 color covers and many B/W illustrations show insight into a dimension of fashion that one normally sees only on the show runways: the never-ending well of creativity brought to life by a truly inventive mind unhampered with concerns of marketability. Peruse the illustrations and notice allusions to gardens, paper-weaving, architecture, tennis, various members of the animal kingdom, ceremonial draperies, sailing ships, and flames. Dresses, coats, masks, swimming costumes, sleepwear, and gowns all ornamented with beads, fur trim, sheer draperies, corded lacings, silver embroidery, leather and straw. Practical? Not really. Mass manufacturing? Not in a million years. This is extreme fashion, the stuff of couture, such as would be worn to the salon of writers and intellectuals. Erte loved best to design for the stage, and the drama and fantasy of theater is in evidence in each ornate illustration. Although for 3 years he produced designs for Altman and Bendel in NY, most of his work was strictly conceptual, and many readers of Harper's saved covers and sketches to muse over as they would an art history volume, as evidence of another world. Ignoring fashion trends, Erte generated innovative and outre designs that still amaze and delight those of us who appreciate true originality. I'd recommend this book to anyone interested in textile or fashion design, but also to graphic designers, sculptors, and those who really enjoy art for its own sake. This book is, in one word: luscious.

Book Description
It is a time of upheaval and civil unrest, but for Max Collins life is sweet. As campaign advisor to London mayoral candidate Thom Conran, he can always escape the pressures of the political arena and London city life to his country retreat. But when his errant daughter, whose fifteenth birthday is imminent, becomes embroiled in the politics of change that is sweeping the nation, when the problems show up literally right in his own backyard, Max¹s true colors begin to surface as he becomes torn between his current political allegiances and his more radical past. And all the while, the madding crowd is getting closer.
Customer Reviews:
Nothing Special.......2005-08-21
Kanan's graphic novella competently covers familiar turf in 64 pages without any great surprises, only to flounder in an unconvincing climax. Set in contemporary London and its The ex-urbs, the story is about Max Collins and his family. Once a leftist political science professor, he abandoned academia to become an advisor for an up-and-coming politician. With his new job, Max is able to afford to move his family out of the city to a bigger, better house in the country. While on the surface, the family is a happy unit, there are flashbacks of Max's infidelity with a student and broken promises to his daughter.
Now, his candidate is running for Mayor of London amidst a nationwide furor over a new land law designed to prevent travelers or squatters from occupying vacant property. The issue is literally brought home to Max when a group of gypsies move into the field behind his house. What results is pretty textbook stuff -- when the issues move from the abstract to the personal, the former radical (and artist wife) shed their liberal skin and get just as nasty as anyone else. Of course, the teenage daughter rebels against this and becomes friends with a gypsy boy, leading to other complications.
Everything culminates in an election day riot by protesters which results in a rather ridiculous ending. Max's method of self-redemption (or atonement) is both empty, cowardly, and implausible. The themes of selling out to the man and disappointing one's children are unreeled in kind of a paint-by-number manner. That said, the dialogue is pretty good, much better than most found in graphic novels. Especially good are the little family scenes Kanan creates, it feels like a real family interacting. The artwork is very solid and restrained, in the realist style. The panels tend to be really really crammed with text though, so it doesn't breathe or flow very well. The result is that when he does stop and offer a still, wordless moment, it leaves a much greater impact. On the whole, though, the book didn't do much for me.
Powerfully presented, highly recommended graphic novel........2002-03-29
Set in the modern-day London area, The Birthday Riots by Nabiel Kanan is the engaging graphic novel focused on an upscale man who has errantly left behind the ideals of his college days, and now advises a mayoral candidate to turn a blind eye to plight of the homeless and worry more about middle class issues such as transportation instead. But the mounting pressures of embracing practicality over humanity converge upon him, as his fifteen-year-old daughter runs away from home and mounting social pressured all come to a head. The Birthday Riots is a powerfully presented tragedy about losing touch with one's former self, and the disaster that blind acquiescence into moral ambiguity can bring. Highly recommended reading.

Book Description
An adaptation of Mark Twain's wonderful story set in California's gold-rush days. This is the story that made Angel's Camp, California famous for its annual frog jumping contest. The story relates the hilarious escapades of Jim Smiley who would bet on anything (even if he had to change sides to get the bet going). There is "The Fifteen Minute Nag" (a horse that looked so bad the other horse owners would give her a head start) that could win any race, Andrew Jackson (Smiley's pet dog that could beat any dog until he came across an opponent with no hind legs), and the famous educated jumping frog by the name of Daniel Webster.

Book about the perils of translation.......2006-02-27
The Jumping Frog is an interesting tale, but this book is more about the difficulties of translations than about the Jumping Frog itself. You can probably find the Jumping Frog in other collection of Twain's books, so don't bother to buy this book if you are only interested in the tale. It is only a three-page tale.
To make a long story short, the Jumping Frog was translated into French with the objective of demoralizing Twain's humor. Obviously, the humor in this tale was more in between the lines and in the form it was written than about the story itself (which was silly and not funny.)
As Twain says, however, the translator "has not translated it at all; he has simply mixed it all up; it is no more like the Jumping Frog when he gets through with it than I am like a meridian of longitude." To prove his point, Twain proceeded to translate the French translation "back into a civilized language" [i.e. English] to show that the French translation did not do justice to his work.
This book has the original tale in the first pages, then the French translation, and then the English version of the French translation.
It is more a personal vendetta from Twain than a work of literature. But it is an important work for those interested in translation.
Quick, Lite Read.......2001-07-29
This is a little silly story about a man who has a rather humorous betting habit and focuses on the account of some bets he placed with a highly talented jumping-frog that he owned.
The story is not half bad and I understand that it became quite popular and was one of the first writings to bring Twain into the limelight. Even so, I do not feel that story - short as it is - stands the test of time as do other writings of Mark Twain. Don't be fooled though, the story is a nice quick and light read, especially if you want to divert your attention from the lull of boredom or any other times of inactivity.
Good tale for kids.......2001-01-29
I've decided to renew my interest in Mark Twain, having read and enjoyed "Roughing It". I found out that this was Twain's first success, and decided to give it a try. It's a very short, amusing and enjoyable story that adults should be able get through in a matter of minutes, and I should imagine that kids would enjoy: but I would not recommend experimenting on the local amphibia to test the veracity of Twain's story!

Book Description
Featuring 27 sketches the author wrote while living in California and Nevada, Mark Twain's first book, The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County, was published in May 1867, and has been out of print for well over a century. As Roy Blount Jr. observes in his introduction, "Jumping Frog is
not just the seed from which the Mark Twain empire sprang, it is his most devilish and quicksilver book, the one that made the fewest concessions to the book-buying market of the day--the work of a man who had profited, artistically, from the company of roughnecks." In his Afterword, Richard Bucci
notes that "Mark Twain rebelled against everything that was obscure in art, and everywhere sought to deepen and broaden his audience. His cause was not merely to deflate and criticize, but to create, in a new and democratic artistic language. The Jumping Frog book is only a small moment on his path
to remaking American fiction, but it is the beginning moment--reason enough to justify the book's reappearance now, after one hundred twenty five years. Grand historical significance aside, however, not a few of the sketches in this book still sparkle with their original humor and insight into the
human condition."

Can frogs really be "THAT" big?.......1999-01-23
Yes - they can. At Heights Elementary in Pittsburg California back 35 years ago or so we would have a jumping frog contest every year in the circles used for kick ball. All the kids would bring giant frogs and let them go from the center of the ring. OH MY! It was so much fun - all because of this book (I am still scared of frogs to this day) but I love the book and every kid should read it.
excellent.......1998-07-28
"Jumping Frog" is a wonderful, hilarious story (among a group of several other great ones) that my father read to me as a kid. If you love Twain, get it.
