    Book Description

Vertigo takes a leading role in bringing to light the emerging architectural landscape of the industrialized world. The ten projects explored include Lake Vegas in Nevada, the new Reichstag and Jewish Museum in Berlin, the Tate Gallery in London, Hong Kong Airport, Ontario Mills in Los Angeles, and the Millenium Dome in London. Edited by Rowan Moore, with essays by Jacques Herzog, Paul Davies, Aaron Betsky and others. In contrast to the bland future-gazing seen to date, Vertigo sets out to evoke tangible urban experiences, not futuristic utopias.

2 out of 5 stars Jackets, Coats and Suits.......2000-12-31

While this book had some tid-bits about how to copy famous designer's work, it is mainly a advertisement for the designers and other merchants.

I purchased this book to improve my tailoring skills. The small amount of information contained within the book was not worth the purchase price. But, most important it was not worth my time.

If you're looking to make a jacket or a blazer, this is one book you don't want to miss. It's got more information about fitting, pressing, sizing, facing, and construction than any I've seen before.

Unfortunately, it doesn't have much information on winter coat construction. If you're looking for advice on how to sew duffle or other thick woollens, you won't find it here.

          Book Description

This report was created for global strategic planners who cannot be content with traditional methods of segmenting world markets. With the advent of a “borderless world”, cities become a more important criteria in prioritizing markets, as opposed to regions, continents, or countries. This report covers the top 2000 cities in over 200 countries. It does so by reporting the estimated market size (in terms of latent demand) for each major city of the world. It then ranks these cities and reports them in terms of their size as a percent of the country where they are located, their geographic region (e.g. Africa, Asia, Europe, Middle East, North America, Latin America), and the total world market. In performing various economic analyses for its clients, I have been occasionally asked to investigate the market potential for various products and services across cities. The purpose of the studies is to understand the density of demand within a country and the extent to which a city might be used as a point of distribution within its region. From an economic perspective, however, a city does not represent a population within rigid geographical boundaries. To an economist or strategic planner, a city represents an area of dominant influence over markets in adjacent areas. This influence varies from one industry to another, but also from one period of time to another. In what follows, I summarize the economic potential for the world\'s major cities for "contract receipts for men’s and boys’ tailored suits, coats, jackets, and vests" for the year 2007. The goal of this report is to report my findings on the real economic potential, or what an economist calls the latent demand, represented by a city when defined as an area of dominant influence. The reader needs to realize that latent demand may or may not represent real sales. For many items, latent demand is clearly observable in sales, as in the case for food or housing items. Consider, however, the category "satellite launch vehicles". Clearly, there are no launch pads in most cities of the world. However, the core benefit of the vehicles (e.g. telecommunications, etc.) is "consumed" by residents or industries within the world\'s cities. Without certain cities, in other words, the market for satellite launch vehicles would be lower for the world in general. One needs to allocate, therefore, a portion of the worldwide economic demand for launch vehicles to both regions and cities. This report takes the broader definition and considers, therefore, a city as a part of the global market.

                Book Description

This study covers the world outlook for contract receipts for men’s and boys’ tailored suits, coats, jackets, and vests across more than 200 countries. For each year reported, estimates are given for the latent demand, or potential industry earnings (P.I.E.), for the country in question (in millions of U.S. dollars), the percent share the country is of the region and of the globe. These comparative benchmarks allow the reader to quickly gauge a country vis-à-vis others. Using econometric models which project fundamental economic dynamics within each country and across countries, latent demand estimates are created. This report does not discuss the specific players in the market serving the latent demand, nor specific details at the product level. The study also does not consider short-term cyclicalities that might affect realized sales. The study, therefore, is strategic in nature, taking an aggregate and long-run view, irrespective of the players or products involved.

                        Book Description

WHAT IS LATENT DEMAND AND THE P.I.E.?

The concept of latent demand is rather subtle. The term latent typically refers to something that is dormant, not observable, or not yet realized. Demand is the notion of an economic quantity that a target population or market requires under different assumptions of price, quality, and distribution, among other factors. Latent demand, therefore, is commonly defined by economists as the industry earnings of a market when that market becomes accessible and attractive to serve by competing firms. It is a measure, therefore, of potential industry earnings (P.I.E.) or total revenues (not profit) if a market is served in an efficient manner. It is typically expressed as the total revenues potentially extracted by firms. The “market” is defined at a given level in the value chain. There can be latent demand at the retail level, at the wholesale level, the manufacturing level, and the raw materials level (the P.I.E. of higher levels of the value chain being always smaller than the P.I.E. of levels at lower levels of the same value chain, assuming all levels maintain minimum profitability).

The latent demand for contract receipts for men's and boys' tailored suits, coats, jackets, and vests is not actual or historic sales. Nor is latent demand future sales. In fact, latent demand can be lower either lower or higher than actual sales if a market is inefficient (i.e., not representative of relatively competitive levels). Inefficiencies arise from a number of factors, including the lack of international openness, cultural barriers to consumption, regulations, and cartel-like behavior on the part of firms. In general, however, latent demand is typically larger than actual sales in a country market.

For reasons discussed later, this report does not consider the notion of “unit quantities”, only total latent revenues (i.e., a calculation of price times quantity is never made, though on

Paranoia: the surreal, twisted vision of an Orwellian future where players are positively encouraged to betray each other merely to survive, and the most unique roleplaying game on the market today. Paranoia is destined to once more provide roleplayers with the sort of frantic gaming experience that proved so popular at the game’s inception - there has never been a roleplaying game like it! Paranoia: WMD is a full-length Paranoia mission in the Straight style, providing Clones with temple-popping, hi-octane action as they strive to prevent (or not) Alpha Complex’s destruction at the hands of a recently discovered, ancient technology. Written by chief Paranoia XP writer Allen Varney, Paranoia: WMD is the next instalment of an extensively supported development programme. Paranoia is destined to once more provide roleplayers with the sort of frantic gaming experience that proved so popular at the game’s inception - there has never been a roleplaying game like it!

Considered by many the peak of Osamu Tezuka's artistic achievement and called his "life work" by the author, PHOENIX is made up 12 complex stories linked by the presence of the mythical bird, an immortal guarden of the universal life force. Read in order, the separate stories jump across time, alternating between a distant future and a distant past, converging on the present, with characters from one story being reincarnated in another. Believe the hype: the Dark Phoenix saga is one of the greatest comics stories ever. Conceived by writer Chris Claremont and penciller John Byrne (credited as co-plotters, and aided immeasurably by inker Terry Austin), the story begins in The Uncanny X-Men #129 when Professor X sends his team in search of two new mutants detected by Cerebro. The figures in question turn out to be Kitty Pride, who would eventually join the team as Sprite, and the flashy disco singer Dazzler, who would go on to star in her own book. Little do the X-Men know that they're walking into a trap set by the Hellfire Club, a group of supervillains that seem perfectly matched to counter our merry mutants. The insidious part of the plot, however, is how a mysterious man named Jason Wyngarde seems to have been Jean Grey's lover in another time, another era, and how that might give him control over her now. Jean Grey was, like Cyclops, an original member of the X-Men, and had the power of telepathy (a gentle power, like that of the Invisible Girl of the same era). When she was reborn as Phoenix in issue #108, however, she became power incarnate. Can it be controlled, or must the X-Men make a choice between the woman they love and the fate of the universe? It's all here in this nine-issue volume, plus Wolverine alone, Emma Frost, the return of original members Angel and Beast, and a showdown with Lilandra's Imperial Guard in one of comics' great milestone issues, X-Men #137. Read it, true believer--'nuff said. --David Horiuchi

Pretty much the best X-Men story, period. More than happy to have this in multiple formats. Whether in the middle of an essential, in the issues, in Classic X-Men, or in a trade paperback format such as this, this is one story that is worth the paper it is printed on, and worth being delivered to you in more than one way.

Even coming from a diferent comic era, this history still retains lots of its glory and strenght. Nice to realize that TV show described this story almost faithfully.

5 out of 5 stars Il capolavoro di Claremont e Byrne.......2007-01-29

the dark phoenix saga is a pretty good storyline about jean grey as the dark phoenix. i didn't care too much about the opening parts, where jean is manipulated by the mastermind and the hellfire club. but when jean goes dark phoenix and eats a sun and then the shi'ar come to kill her, well that's old marvel greatness.

5 out of 5 stars marvel's best moment or marvel's greatest moment? you decide.......2006-12-28

this is it. Perhaps the best best X-men story ever. Don't believe the "it's dated" crowd. This and the following "days or the future" past story line saved the X-men comic from cancellation and created a mythos. It's dark and edgy even now (how many comics can say a character comits suicide for the good of the rest of the universe). The movies don't even to begin to scrath the surface of the stuff here. Read it now. You NEED it.
