Edward Gorey is an author and an illustrator who has carved a unique niche creating macabre graphic novels that are part satire and part social commentary--comics for adults. Though often relating lurid tales of Victorian crime, Gorey eschews blood and gore in favor of atmosphere and humor. Here the editors have collected a representative sample of his work. Ross, an artist, and Wilkin, an art critic, also provide a useful introductory essay on Gorey's work and an informative interview with him. The book includes a complete bibliography and photographs of Gorey's library and studio.
Book Description
The World of Edward Gorey, now in paperback, is the first major book on the devilishly amusing American artist and writer perhaps best known for his witty opening credits for PBS's Mystery! series and for such books as Amphigorey, The Doubtful Guest, and The Unstrung Heart.
Gorey, who died in 2000 at the age of 75, had one of the most intensely loyal followings of any artist; most of his many books-cherished for their dark humor, hand-lettered texts, and sophisticated, spooky pen-and-ink drawings of an Edwardian world-are still in print. Here, an extensive, informative interview with Clifford Ross, an artist and a longtime friend of Gorey, introduces the reader to Gorey himself. Art critic Karen Wilkin leads us on a voyage through Gorey's world, discussing Gorey's unmistakable style and setting it in the context of narrative art and popular culture. With 200 superb reproductions, this book is the ultimate gift for all of Gorey's many fans.
Customer Reviews:
Oh, Karen..........2007-04-10
After all the work that Karen has done on Edward Gorey, it amazes me that she knows so little about him. This book was a huge disappointment to me, and most of it was a direct result of Karen Wilkin's romatic ramblings. It seems to me that she should go back and really read her other book, Ascending Peculiarty. That one is much better, more informative, and personal.
Two critical pieces and selections from his art, ultimately of limited appeal.......2006-04-09
THE WORLD OF EDWARD GOREY, by Clifford Ross and Karen Wilkin, is an overview of the great artist, writer, and droll humorist. While Gorey is one of my favourite literary figures, I found this book to be of limited appeal.
The first part of the book is Ross' interview with Gorey, a rather unimpressive piece that sheds little light on Gorey's development. Ross will bring up painters or authors of the past, and Gorey will either mildly approve, or speak badly of them. Gorey doesn't really seem up to the discussion, and all in all this is a disappointment. What follows, however, is fairly enlightening: Wilkin's essay "Mr. Earbrass Jots Down a Few Visual Notes" explores the various themes of Gorey's work (such as children meeting unfortunate ends), allusions to earlier artists (such as Klee) in his work, and the way he constructs plots. This is a more substantial piece than the interview, though really it will be of interest only to those who wish to deeply explore all facets of Gorey's creations.
The second half of the book are the plates, and this is what really might attract casual lovers of Gorey's work even if they already have the "Amphigorey" collections. Here we find examples not from just his well-known books, but also drawings from unpublished ones, simple sketches of what later became mature material, and many of the book covers and theatrical designs he did for other literary works. I was quite surprised to see Gorey's book covers, since to me his style doesn't fit Muriel Spark or Gogol at all, but apparently he was quite sought after back in the day.
If you are a really intense fan of Gorey and want to know more about his critical reception, THE WORLD OF EDWARD GOREY may be worth looking at. Those who just get an occasional chuckle from his idiosyncracy, however, should pass.
Not bad, but the writing (Ugh!).......2001-11-29
The author, Clifford Ross, knows his stuff. His inteview with Edward Gorey provides some illuminating insights into a great artist and charming soul. However, Ross's style often gives the impression that he is promoting his own material. Gorey's work is a pleasure to enjoy, and the book is worth a buy. (...)
A serious look at a funny man.......2000-03-09
This book features an interesting interview, and then a rather rambling mononograph about Gorey's work overall. This essay is an important first attempt to place Gorey's unique vision into some kind of context, and though quite descriptive, it doesn't reveal a whole lot to me. The best part of the book is plates of some of Gorey's less well-known material, his stage curtain backdrops, etc. Fans of Gorey will appreciate a glimpse of these things for their collections. Those unfamiliar with his work would find a better introduction with one of the "Amphigorey" treasuries.
A great book about the Enbassador of Edwardian times.......1999-09-23
This book is about Edward Gorey and the part about his art, written by Karen Wilkin, is very good. The interview isn't very good, but it makes up for it by all the great pictures.
Book Description
When massive, intelligent aliens from Mars touch down in Victorian England and threaten to destroy the civilized world, humanity's vaunted knowledge proves to be of little use. First published in 1898, H.G. Wells's masterpiece of speculative fiction has thrilled and delighted generations of readers, spawned countless imitations, and inspired dramatizations by such masters as Orson Welles and Steven Spielberg. The War of the Worlds is a fantasy that is both startlingly up-to-date and in touch with the most ancient of human illustrationfears.
In 1960, Edward Gorey prepared a set of his inimitable pen-and-ink drawings to illustrate a new edition of Wells's The War of the Worlds for the legendary Looking Glass Library. Characteristically quirky, elegant, and entrancing, Gorey's visual take on Wells's seminal tour de force has been unavailable for close to fifty years. This special hardcover edition from NYRB Classics brings back for today's readers a richly rewarding collaboration between two modern masters of all that's wonderful and strange.
Customer Reviews:
Great sci fi for a book written over a hundred years ago!.......2006-08-21
First thing I have to say is what great scientific imagination for a book written in the late 1800's. I mean they didnt even have cars yet and Mr. Wells is writing about partical beams and biological warfare. 2nd is I was actually surprised at how much the recent movie used from the book. I didnt care for the movie as much as I did the original version but it was much more faithful to the book than I'd ever imagined. If you your a fan of either of the two movies or just want a very good sci fi book to read I highly recommend this book. The language at times is dated being written at the turn of the century but it's still a quick and easy read.
Book vs. Movie and other thoughts.......2006-05-24
I read this book because I was curious how close or incredibly far the movie had stuck to it. I was quite surprised to discover, that while the movie's main character couldn't be more different, the plot is almost identical in spirit. Spielberg didn't create all those different modes of suspense, he just channelled them from Wells. First we have the discovery, then the initial panic, then the mob mentality, then hydrophobic, claustrophobic, and xenophobic situations that are chilling. Granted all these circumstances are updated into the 21st century. I was impressed by how many details were included (the redweed particularly).
The book is better than the movie in two aspects. First off, the scene in the cellar with the main character and curate. I've talked to a lot of people who felt that the execution of Tim Robbin's character in the movie was not just and unnecesary. The book handles this much better-"with one last touch of humanity"
The ending of the movie is absurd. You don't care that the son is still alive because he annoyed us so much with his whining. Then you are let down when there is no true reconciliation between the broken family. In the book (PLEASE STOP HERE IF YOU HAVEN'T READ IT YET) you barely meet the wife, and deep down, you are just sure she is still alive, but their reunion does not seem fabricated, it seems somehow eerie and almost gives you chills.
This is a great book.......2006-02-15
I liked this book mainly because it's science fiction. I liked the martions and the detail the writer used. I liked the interesting words used by the writer. It was illustrated well.
War of the Worlds.......2006-01-10
The War of the Worlds is about Martians invading the earth. The main character, Wells, runs away from the Martians in the direction of his family while also trying to figure out why the Martians were there. Wells goes on many exciting adventures to get to his family.
The book took place in London, England on the 13th of August 1894. Wells goes through many different cities while he travels 20 miles on foot towards his family in Leatherhead. Wells watched tons of people die from the Heat Ray and just getting crushed by the Martians in their robot.
This book is really good if you like adventure or science fiction. I think this book is mainly for boys 8+. I recommend this book if you have the chance to read it.
Longers book ever.......2005-11-03
I think that the movie "War of the Worlds" the new one was not base on the book. Even though the movie was really tense and had some awesome graphics. It had almost nothing to do with the story, I mean I would like the movie to start off with the beginning of the story where they look at a meteor and do not now that they are under attack. And even when they fired at earth, they acted like nothing happen. But the part when the cylinder space ship landed and every one looked and just stood around and, BAAM! The ship just came out of the ground with all the green smoke and starter vaporizing everyone, and the book even explains how the beams of light work. Like super hot rays of light that could turn steel into butter. Everything is so detailed and ever though the book is fiction we might used these ideas for modern plans and how the aliens looked with big eyes and no chin; with pail gray skin. I recommend this book to any one, but don't be surprise if it does not run with the movie. But don't take it from me read it your self...

Book Description
The "After-Party" is a book written about two women Valerie and April, who settled for immediate gratification in their romantic relationships even though, they both knew they might be headed for trouble. It is about Valerie who picked the first popular guy she met and then rushed into marriage. Then there was April who only dated men with large bank accounts and who were popular around town. This story is about the emotional pain that these women endured to hold onto these particular relationships.
In this book, you will read about how these women both lived different lifestyles; one was a single mother of two, while the other was a single attractive aggressive woman. Yet, they both had relationships with certain kind of men in order to boost their self-esteem. This book addresses how they compromised their integrity and even their safety at times. In the end they learned that sometimes the After-Party is much better than the dance it self!

Finally A Man Understands.......2004-06-13
This book is cutting edge material and deals with real up to date issues. It gives you a womans' perspective on the emotional stress that they must endor dealing with their outlook on society, their standards, their security, and the social status of the men in their lives. Renay keeps it real on this one. As a man, you can finally understand a womans point of view. This could be a great film production.
A Fantastic First For H. Renay Anderson!.......2003-10-28
I thoroughly enjoyed this book! It was entertaining, real-to-life, and emotionally satisfying. I was able to identify with these two women, and I think a lot of others will do so as well. I was actually sad when there was no more to read! Sequel! Sequel!
The After Party.......2003-10-27
This is book is fun, fresh, and full of excitement. I read the whole thing the first day I got it! I could'nt put it down! One of my friends told me about Renay's book and I figured I would support her, but I had no idea the book would be this entertaining. Good job Renay! I look forward to reading more books from you. thanks Gina for telling me about the book, now i'm going to tell all of my friends.

If you need a good chuckle!.......2000-04-20
This book is the most outstanding humor I have read in a long time. It makes you chuckle under your breath, and sometimes laugh right out loud! It has family humor, doctor-patient humor, and of course spousal humor. What a good book to read when you have a few minutes and need a fun pick-me-up.

Hard to put it down!!.......2007-07-28
I enjoyed Mr.Tates' book very much.I plan on thru-hiking in a couple of years and his accounts of the pleasures and severities of the trail were laid out in very interesting details.I met Mr.Tate at an REI talk he gave promoting his book.It was a pleasure to meet him and listen to his lecture on hiking the AT.

Great Book!!!!! .......2006-09-29
I have had the pleasure of meeting "Model-T" this summer on the trail, while he was halfway through his 4th AT hike!!!! After listening to a couple of stories from him and learning that he wrote a book about his first trip, I couldn't wait to get back home and buy the book.
This book is extremely entertaining and gives a true picture of the life of a thru-hiker. I could hardly put it down until I finished reading every page. I hope I will have the time, the energy and the courage to hike the AT from Georgia to Maine one day just like he did.
Keep going Model-T!
Story Time on the A.T........2006-05-29
I loved the book. It is not a technical how-to book, but rather a story about adventure and people of the A.T. This story deals with that inner voice that we all have in dealing with our victories and defeats. If you are a married man, then you are well aquianted with the "LOOK". J.R. takes the LOOK, deals with the LOOK, and LOVES the LOOK and the LOOKER. Great advice for all men. However, a great read for both genders.
Entertaining Read for Family.......2005-11-30
Model-T takes you (and J.R.) along for quite a ride. This is the funniest and most captivating book on the subject I've read. There are a lot of details in the book--but that is what anyone who is really interested in thru-hiking wants to read! This is a very interesting window into his FIRST thru-hike that no doubt benefitted from his other 2 complete thru-hikes (a VERY rare accomplishment).
Mr. Tate's writing style is quite appealing, easy to read yet incorporating some of the most diverse vocabulary I've ever seen. At no point was I bored or tempted to skip ahead; most of the time I was wiping tears from my face (laughing too hard). When it ended I was tempted to read it again... but instead delighted in watching my wife read it (similar hysterical reactions--at one point, in an airport gate-waiting area several people asked if she was okay).
I've read some good books on the AT, but this is by far my favorite. Bryson's book was okay (the middle chapters in that book are painful to read at best), and managed to get the public/media's attention but if Walkin' on the Happy Side of Misery had received a tenth of that publicity I have no doubt that Mr. Tate would have inspired thousands of people each year to give it a shot. I want this one to become a movie.
a good hiking tale!.......2005-11-22
I have read the book three times so far, and I've been pleased with it every time. I enjoy hiking and dream of one day hiking the AT, and even if I never get to do it, Model-T takes me there and gives me a taste of what it's all about. It's a human experience and sometimes it's not pretty, and J.R. lets us know how it really is.

Book Description
Roy Rogers and Dale Evans ruled the West from the silver screen as the King of Cowboys and and Queen of the West. Off screen, this husband and wife duo raised a family and lived the "Code of the West." Now, in this new book, the Rogers family shares their memories of Roy, Dale, and Trigger, along with their other sidekicks and more than a hundred never before seen, behind-the-scenes photographs.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent.......2007-01-10
This was a gift to my mother, Roy Rogers' best fan. She likes it very much. I also liked it very much. It is a good biography of Roy Rogers and Dale Evans.
A gorgeous, highly recommended keepsake.......2005-02-08
Other books have been written about Roy Rogers and Dale Evans, the king and queen of B Western movies for over a decade who went on to produce a hit television show for ten years thereafter. None contain the rare family photos paired with personal reminiscences which make Happy Trails: A Pictorial Celebration Of The Life And Times Of Roy Rogers And Dale Evans such a memorable keepsake and winner. Happy Trails is simply packed with private photos from the duo's childhoods, early singing careers, marriage, and family life, alongside more familiar publicity shots from their films and show. A gorgeous, highly recommended keepsake.
illustrated, popular biography of the famous cowboy couple.......2005-01-26
The long marriage and professional relationship of Roy Rogers and Dale Evans throughout the 1940s and '50 is presented in a mostly sunny light, as it was in their popular TV series and movies. Not that there aren't some dark moments: Roy Roger's first wife died; and three of the couple's nine children died. But while the sorrows of such moments are not overlooked, it is the strength of Roy and Dale which comes shining through, as when dealing with culprits or problems in their films. The popular, largely pictorial biography contains a number of heretofore unpublished family photos. Fans of these stars of early TV and aficionados of popular culture will take to this book. While not undermining or even threatening the fond popular image of the couple, it presents them as not just stars, but ones who had a life outside of the limelight as well.

Bloom County Rides off into the sunset..........2004-06-16
Happy Trails begins with Opus deciding to get an illegal back-alley liposuction of his nose, and ends with him saying "Good-bye" to all of the familiar faces and places of Bloom County on the way to the sequel "Outland". On the pages that intervene Berkeley Breathed gets in some hilarious and dead-on pokes at religious fanatics, Donald Trump, Swimsuit Editions, and phone solicitors.
Not quite as coherent a collection as the previous books as Breathed tries to get in his "last shots" before retiring Bloom County forever, this book is still hilarious and interesting, and a must-have for those looking to complete their BC collection.
wow.......2001-11-30
This book was very sad.For those who have read Bloom County before it is a must read. And the ones who haven't,still,it is a must read. The ending to this magnificent comic strip was done in excelent taste. You can feel the sorrow as it is over, never to be done again. The charcters are great, which makes it so sad.It truely is a gift on what he did in this last book.I cried,I laughed,I jumped on dandylions.
A fitting end to one of the greatest strips.......2000-07-22
It is a testament to the talents of Berke Breathed that well over ten years after he suspended "Bloom County," it is still sorely missed by its legions of fans, myself included. Once described as "Doonesbury with animals," "Bloom County" took on a life of its own, and what a life it was. "Happy Trails" consists of strips from the County's last year, and all the familiar characters are here--Opus, Bill, Steve Dallas, Cutter John, Milo, and Hodgepodge--as well as a couple of new characters who would star in Breathed's follow-up strip "Outland." Breathed's observations are dead on, and the strips will often have you thinking--once you get enough oxygen back to your brain after laughing so hard. With the possible exception of "Dilbert," no comic today has the fan loyalty that "Bloom County" did--and now that Charles Schultz is no longer with us, I doubt any will again.
There should really be a category for 6-star books..........1999-12-15
I stopped reading the comics regulerly when Bloom County stopped. I didn't find the comics funny anymore. This work, which shows some of his earliest strips are funny, and if you understand the poltical references because you were alive then, which I was, it makes this all the more funny.
Still lamenting the loss of my favorite strip.......1999-11-06
As one progresses through this book, as well as the other outstanding volumes in the Bloom County "Anthology," you remember the quirky concepts, ideals, and opinions of your childhood. You didn't understand much of the strip growing up, as I did, but in retrospect it offers a frank, comical, unyielding, and nostalgic trip through our lives. True Bloom county fans will share my utter sorrow when the last few pages bring an end to an amazing book. I hope Breathed has some more projects in the future.

thanks for the help.......2005-07-20
This book helped me so much the last time I went camping. I was always so scared to bring my dog with me...too many variables. My friend told me about this book and that it might help. It told me everything I really needed to know in a simplistic way. Gary Hoffman didn't make me feel any less intelligent for my lack of knowledge about camping with my dog. I got all the information I needed and the trip was a success. Next time I just might stay longer!
Hiking With Your Dog, is extremely helpful..........2005-06-09
Gary Hoffman's book, Hiking With Your Dog, is extremely helpful when backpacking with the family dogs. I consider myself a well informed person, but having information available in print is invaluable. It's not always easy to keep your facts straight while dogs bark, children yell and husbands fish. I would have liked even more information. I'm not concerned about typos. Content presented in a concise and simple manner, to me, means the difference between a wonderful camping trip and a disaster.
Informative read.......2005-06-06
This book is delightful presented as well as informative due to the very artistic and funny bone tickling illustrations. The author is obviously writing about something he has done many times and holds especially dear to his heart. There are two "loves" in this book - the rewarding pleasure of canine companionship enhancing the awesome grandeur of outdoor experience. A joy to read!
Poorly written, unhelpful.......2003-07-23
This is a very disappointing book. Almost anyone with dog experience and an 8th grade education could do a better job. The author states in his foreword that he makes no apologies for spelling or grammar mistakes. No excuse! There are errors of punctuation, grammar, and spelling throughout. This might be excusable if the information were of any help, but it's not. About 80% of the information is self-evident, 19% is speculative personal opinion, and only 1% is anything I was unaware of (and I'm not exactly a dog expert). The number of pages is misleading, as there are many blank pages or pages with almost no text, silly cartoons, or big type. The material could fit into about 20 pages of double-spaced text.
Don't waste your money on this book! I recommend Charlene Bell's book instead.
No so bad.......2003-03-19
This is the first "Dog hiking"-book I've seen that has something for the more difficult situations. The book has even short chapter about things like fording and bouldering. It still has the basics too.
No photos, just drawn pictures. Not very informational ones, except the ones about first aid.
Good book, but a bit short. Especially if you do longer, overnight hikes in difficult terrain. LaBelle's book "Guide to backpacking with your dog" is definetly better if you do shorter walks that last only a day. If you decide to buy it, avoid 1st edition. The 2nd edition is definetly improved version.
Customer Reviews:
Great inspiring book!.......2007-01-22
The autobiography of Roy and Dale Rogers. It is beautifully written, funny and touching. They were amazing Christian examples. It is so very rare for movie stars to be good examples, but they were. It was great to read about their personal lives after watching so many of their movies and listening to their music. They were just ordinary people who became famous. They were kind, loving people. My whole family just read this one aloud. It was awesome. A great read!
