Book Description
Should a temple be seen as a work of art, its carvers as artists, its worshipers as art critics and patrons? What is a temple (and its art) to the people who make and use it? Noted anthropologist Hildred Geertz attempts to answer these and other questions in this unique look at transformations in material culture and social relations over time in a village temple in Bali. Throughout Geertz offers insightful glimpses into what the statues, structures, and designs of Pura Desa Batuan convey to those who worship there, deepening our understanding of how a village community evaluates workmanship and imagery.
Following an introduction to the temple and villagers of Batuan, Geertz explores the problematics of the Western concept of "art" as a guiding framework in research. She goes on to outline the many different kinds of work--ideational as well as physical--undertaken in connection with the temple and the social institutions that enable, constrain, and motivate their creation. Finally, the "art-works" themselves are presented, set within the intricate sociocultural contexts of their making. Using the history of Batuan as the main framework for discussing each piece, Geertz looks at the carvings from the perspective of their makers, each generation occupying a different social situation. She confronts concepts such as "aesthetics," "representation," "sacredness," and "universality" and the dilemmas they create in field research and ethnographic writing. Recent temple carvings from the tumultuous and complex period that followed the expulsion of the Dutch and the increasing globalization and commercialization of Balinese society demonstrate yet again that any anthropology of art must also be historical.
Illustrated with over 150 photographs, drawings, and maps, The Life of a Balinese Temple is an unparalleled record of a complex communal achievement. Techno-riffic.......2000-01-08
This book was a well thought out and planned introduction to the world of technical/synthetic fabrics. The definitions, classifications, and examples of usage make for an interesting read. Equally exciting are the chapters on engineering, synthetics, and coatings. The designs and photos are avant-garde with references to the top designers who of course are the first to try new things. It is well organized and easy to use as a reference manual. Techno would be well situated on the bookshelf of every cutting-edge design and production team. However, based on my 15 years of experience in the fashion-forward streetwear scene, I would have expected to find listed the company Decopap Inc of Montreal Canada, which has been the leading source of Vinyl coated fabrics to the streetwear, fetish, and techno crowd for the last 30 years. This one omission aside, the book is truly a valuable source for the textile industry.

Albert Uderzo, Asterix and Obelix All at Sea (Dargaud, 1996)
Spartacus-- oh, excuse me, Spartakis-- has managed to steal Caesar's galley out from under his nose, and is fleeing for the indomitable Gaulish village. The Romans are in hot pursuit, so the Gauls get ready for the battle. No one's paying attention to Obelix... and we finally find out what happens to him when he drinks the magic potion. Hey, we only waited three decades! That alone is worth the price of admission here, but there's another clue to something upon which Uderzo might eventually expand (keep your eyes sharp!). Good stuff. ***
Good, but not the best.......2003-12-09
As a child, I read all of the "classic" Asterix books in Swedish. As an adult I am reading them again, in English, to my American children. This time I am also reading the new ones, like this one, and I am still enjoying it. However, this one is unusually childish and unrealistic. I did not like it too much when Obelix turned into granite, and then into a child, it was a little weird and non-traditional for me. However, my kids loved Obelix being a child, and if my kids love it, I am happy. So instead of three I give it four stars.
I find that children the age 5-13 usually really enjoy these books, not just mine. These comic books are a great way to teach children ancient history. Naturally, the adult needs to help out with the differentiation between fiction and history. From these books, my kids have learned about the Roman Empire, the ancient Greeks, the Vikings, the Goths, the Phoenicians, ancient Gaul, ancient Egypt, and the ancient Mediterranean world in general.
A few people see political satire in these books, not I. I believe that is in the eye of the beholder.
The time is coming for Uderzo to lay down his pen..........2002-11-14
First published in both French and English in 1996.
Considering that Uderzo did write two excellent ones by himself-Asterix and the Black Gold, and Asterix and the Magic Carpet- this is not the best Asterix book.
No doubt, Uderzo has explored some new themes, but the idea of Obelix turning into granite, and then reverting to childhood is laying it on a bit thick-come on!
To bring the great figure, Spartacus into the equation was a good idea, and I quite liked Atlantis, with the cute little angel-children and the flying cows.
So certainly add it to your Asterix collection, but I think the time is coming soon when Uderzo should lay down his Asterix pen, and let this great series come to completion!
A Great Addition to the Series.......2001-02-16
I have heard many bad things about this one, but as an avid fan of Asterix and other works of Uderzo (Iznogud, Umpah Pah, ...), I think this is a great story. The art work is superb, Uderzo certainly gets better with each story. The plot is funny, and Spartakis is great! I have some problems with it though, the adventure seems too much for 48 pages. Seems like at times, Uderzo has had to leave the adventure without getting it anywhere. Spartakis and his band could have been given a greater role than just the cab ride from the Armorian Coast to Atlantis!
Classic Asterix.......2000-06-07
This book contains all the classic Asterix elements with the role of Obelix being priceless. It is a great read for all the people who have been following the adventures of Asterix for such a long time. I love the return to the classic elements after the mildly disappointing book "Asterix and the Secret Weapon".

Much better than Uncle John's.......2003-09-01
This book is so much better than Uncle John's -- most of it is about sex and celebrities and a lot of the small stuff you find on each page is very funny. It's also cheaper than John's and there's a lot more to read -- I wish Greta (woman? secretly a man?) would write one every year like Uncle John does but I looked it up and only found that she (he) has written one other book titled "That's Disgusting"
Excellent book.......2002-02-09
All throughout reading this book I was entertained and fascinated at the same time. The first few chapters (on celebrities and sex) has some of the most interesting facts and trivial bits I've ever read. It's also quite funny in how the bits are presented, as Greta Garbage has a wicked sense of humor.
The only problem was that the book needed a better editor; there were a lot of typos, some more glaring than others (in one instance, Melissa Joan Hart is identified as the daughter of Joan Rivers). That's my only real problem; I really think of the book as deserving four and a half stars.
Unbelievably fantastic book.......2001-11-26
This book is so chock full of interesting and funny things I couldn't put it down. I kept turning to different pages and finding more that I wanted to read. This could be the most fascinating book out there! I read the author's other book "That's Disgusting" so I picked this one up when I saw it. I loved the other but there's much more to read here (althouugh most of it is less disgusting) about celebrities and sex and sports and TV and movies and lots of other things. My only objection is that I don't think it has to be a "bathroom" book. Maybe it should just have been a trivia and humor book.
"Could not put it down".......2001-11-14
I just read a great new book, "Greta Garbage's Outrageous Bathroom Book." This is one bathroom book that you can read in any room in the house. Full of fascinating facts, shocking stories, terrific trivia, and hilarious humor. If you are looking for a gift for someone that they will enjoy for sometime to come, you have found your answer.
Be sure to read "Small penis Rule, and check out what is so unique about Preparation "H". Guaranteed to make you top dog around the water cooler.
