Still Funny After All These Years.......2007-08-10
Reading through my old Far Side collections like this one leaves me with two thoughts. The first is how funny The Far Side is. The other is how much I miss it. Until Gary Larson comes to his hilariously heightened senses and decides his long break is over and actually begins drawing his legendary series again, trips down memory lane will have to do, and do nicely. As for The Curse of Madame "C" it's among Larson's funniest and best anthologies, and one of the greatest parts is its prologue wherein we learn with a wink and a nudge exactly why The Far Side is so populated with bovines. Just a great little book to own and keep for a rainy day.
Some of the funniest cartoons I have ever seen.......2007-05-05
The cartoons in this collection are hysterical, my favorite by far is on page 56. The setting is bathroom stalls from the front and we can see two pairs of feet under two adjacent doors. One pair is wrapped in bandages which are coming off. The caption reads: "It was an innocent mistake, but nevertheless, a moment later Maurice found himself receiving the full brunt of the mummy's wrath." I roared at this one, it is one of the funniest cartoons I have ever seen.
Larson is one of the best cartoonists ever, his diagrams are never cluttered and they generally are a combination of visual and verbal puns. I can read and reread his cartoons several times and never fail to get a chuckle. Which is what I did with this collection.
A tragic tale of gypsy cattle and pigeons.......2003-02-23
This story tells the tale of Gary Larson's journey into madness, when he confronts an evil gypsy cow that curses him to forever entertain people with riotous cartoons. The start of the book relates his adventures against "Madame "C"", a molevelent cow. It is a wonderful, (and thankfully short), tale concerning his frightful encounter in a smooth color cartoon over several pages.
The rest of the book details, in b&w cartoon format, the humorous trials and tevails of various critters such as worms, pigeons, and cowhands. If you haven't read a "Far Side", you won't know what I'm talking about and you've had your head in the sand for the past 20 years or so. Buy the book, for the love of Mike!
Laughs, laughs and more laughs........2000-04-14
Yet another from the pen of Gary Larson. This is an incredibly funny book, but if you are a Far Side fan you probably do not need to be told this fact. They are all incredibly funny. The Curse of Madame "C" begins with the story of how the Far Side began. The story is a humorous take on An American Werewolf in London. It shows how a young Larson met all of the characters he would later write about and how he would be cursed with a need to write cartoons.
After the story ends the zany cartoons begin. From longcows to cow field trips. Mummies, aliens, neanderthals, and much, much more. This book will make you laugh from start to finish. You'll want to read it again and again. You'll want to loan it to all of your friends. You will love it.

Book Description
In 1940, DC Comics created the concept of the super-team by bringing together Green Lantern, Hawkman, Wonder Woman, and many others to battle powers that threatened the entire world.
Book Description
Originally published as World War II was ending, the stories reprinted in ALL STAR COMICS ARCHIVES VOL. 6 are historical snapshots of the emotions that many Americans were experiencing at that time. Mixing tales in which the Flash, Green Lantern, Wonder Woman, Hawkman, and the rest of the Justice Society of America fought against alien robots, traveled through time and battled sentient paintings with adventures that touched on the emotional return of our soldiers and the prevalent anti-German sentiment, these stories simultaneously entertained and mirrored the collective consciousness of the nation.

Vol. 6 Wildcat & Mr. Terrific (Weak art alert!).......2004-06-04
This particular collection is of interest to fans of the JSA because it contains the stories that give Wildcat and Mr. Terrific their memberships. Instead of being forgotten heroes of the forties, their legacies live on because of these brief appearances. Roy Thomas's intro explains the events leading up to this change in membership clearly. The main problem with this edition is the art. It is of particularly poor quality by lesser lights, with the exception of Joe Kubert's wonderful Hawkman segments, and make the stories appear exceptionally amateurish. It's a shame because the stories themselves are pretty good, especially the one dealing with the heroes being aided by people with disabilities which seems fairly enlightened for the time period. Not some of All-Star Comics finest moments, but has historical value for the comic fan.

Customer Reviews:
Great for collectors, must be enjoyed within context of its time.......2006-07-07
Admittedly, I was a tad disappointed in this collection - but I was probably still thinking a bit too modern. These tales are from the early 1940's (and I was envisioning something more like the reprints from the 1950's that I'd read as a kid). The artwork is a bit more crude, the dialog & stories are definitely vintage. I suppose my biggest disappointment was that its not really a "team" book - the characters only get together at the "board meeting" in the beginning of each tale and then again at the "return meeting" at the end of the tale. In the middle, its all separate little stories, each featuring one hero in their own little bit. Don't expect any big "team" battles with all the characters fighting together.
But all that said, if you're a comics fan, and especially if you're a collector, then all of these "Archive Editions" are a great deal! Much less expensive than buying the originals (and a darn sight sturdier than a 60-year old comic printed on cheap paper would be)! Yes, it was a different time back then, and these stories are as much a look back at those times in general as they are a look back at super heroes in the "golden Age" of comics.
By the way, I bought my copy through one of Amazon's used book sellers and thus got an even better deal on it.
Awe inspiring.......2004-08-04
Quite simply the best way to live in the Golden Age of comics. These comics would cost you thousands to buy, but here you can read them for a fraction of that. The art, crude by todays standards. Storylines, simple, but you have to remember when and where the comics come from. If you are a comicbook lover like I am, these are a must have.
Book Description
As the original super-hero team, the Justice Society of America defended the nation against all threats domestic, international, and extraterrestrial in the 1940s. Beautifully reprinted in ALL STAR COMICS ARCHIVES VOL. 7 are some of their most classic tales and adventures from that era. Boasting a lineup that included Green Lantern, Flash, Hawkman, Wonder Woman, Dr. Mid-Nite, and Johnny Thunder, the JSA find themselves up against a diverse set of adversaries such as the super-scientist Landor, the brutish monster Solomon Grundy, and the emotion-controlling Psycho-Pirate.

Some of the best All Star stories.......2007-03-21
Archives 7 contains some of the better Golden Age JSA stories:
#29- With strong art from Kubert (Hawkman) and Kozlak(Atom and Green Lantern)this story of a man from the future looking for a challenge is not bad. The idea of characters like the Reverse Flash stem from this type of story and the idea still pops up today.
#30- Brainwave makes another appearance, taking our heroes into bizarre fantasy worlds and making them doubt their own existence. With Johnny Thunder actually making sense, this one is a great deal of fun. The art is wild, particularly in the Flash chapter where he's surrounded by funny animals.
#31-Is another sci-fi based story that lacks the action of the one in issue #29 and serves as a precursor to the type of stories the series ended with.
#32-The Psycho Pirate makes another appearance and the story works pretty well with the exception of the Psycho-Pirate's accomplice, Big Mike, who may be one of the dumbest criminals ever seen in the All Star books.
#33- One of the best All Star stories, "The Revenge of Solomon Grundy" brings the swamp creature into combat with the entire JSA instead of his usual foe, Green Lantern. Each hero comes up short against the monster, but combined they overcome the creature. With excellent art all the way around this is easily one of the JSA's best tales from the Golden Age.
Overall this is a good collection and with Roy Thomas's excellent introduction this is a very good volume in the series.
A transitional volume.......2001-12-11
The five issues of the class Forties series ALL-STAR collected here show a transitional period with the Justice Society of America: this is, is Roy Thomas explains in his intelligent introduction to the volume, just before the great series of Justice Society stories that have been so classically remembered by comics enthusiasts. This has the first of those stories, the marvelous "Revenge of Solomon Grundy," with its superb artwork (especially in the Joe Kubert Hawkman chapter) and terrific narrative suspense. The other stories collected here are a mixed blend: the Psycho-Pirate story is enormously disappointing, but the Brain Wave story "The Dreams of Madness!" is particularly surreal and nightmarish, and the Landor story has a nifty gimmick. There's too much dreary Johnny Thunder antics for my own personal taste in these stories, and not enough Wonder Woman (why wouldn't they let her participate in the adventures?), but it's got a great Forties feel to it.

Excellent collection of classic tales.......2005-07-10
One of DC's earlier archive editions, this volume reprints the entirety of All-Star Comics #3-6, the first four issues of the Justice Society of America. Considering the high cost of the individual issues, this is a fantastic affordable way to own the contents of those issues. Each issue is broken up into linked individual adventures of the various members of the Justice Society, giving these characters an extra showcase outside of the titles they had their own adventures in. The overall package is very attractive and great care is evident in the reproduction. A must-own for fans of the Golden Age of comics and the Justice Society.
worth it.......2005-03-04
i love this collection!!! it reprints classic stories of the justice society!!! the flash, the atom, the spectre, dr. fate, the sandman, the green lantern, hawkman, johny thunder and the hourman. great art great stories never reprinted material you should buy this.
Excellent Reproduction, Excellent Classic Team Stories.......2002-01-10
I never grew up durring the Golden Age. And you don't need to be to enjoy this book. This book reprints All-Star JSA issues #3 - 6. The book features the VERY first Super Hero Team! The stories are corney, sure, but it's still fun and entertaining to this day. Like one reviewer said, if you get one Archive you'll want to get them all - it's that good! Comic fans will love this book, and it's other volumes.
This story features interesting characters, like Spectre, Dr. Fate, Golden Age Flash and Green Lantern, Hour Man, The Atom, Hawkman (also features Hawk girl in one issue) and my favorites Sandman and Jonny Thunder!!! All are classic heros that even appear today, like in Comics such as "Spectre" (Who is Hal Jordon now) and "JSA" written by Awsome Writer Goeff Johns.
Buy this book if your a comic fan! Even if you aren't into comics, it's a great place to start and learn. (May as well Start at the begining of Comic Histroy)
Golden Age Comes Alive!.......2000-05-02
Anyone who is a true fan of comic books will truly appreciate this hard cover edition of the first Super Hero Team--The Justice Society of America. This team of heroes set the stage of their silver age counterparts, as well as, the Justice League of America. I am glad DC has put together these Archive Editions as an easy way to capture hard to find and out of print titles. You could easily spend thousands of dollars and long hours at comic conventions to buy back issues. I for one am hooked. Once you buy one, you'll want to buy the whole set.
