This book was awesome. It really does work. My band was very bad because we had so many rookies this year, but with the instruction of this book we won our Regional class. Thank you so much to the authors. Next year we will be going to the top as Grand National Champs!

5 out of 5 stars Instructing Book for TKD Players.......2005-05-15

I am a Japanese student. In Japan, there are few Japanese books of WTF taekwondo, so people uses English TKD books to learn taekwondo. And this book is one of the most popular TKD books in Japan. This fact would represent value of the book.
As for me, this book is felt to be very useful, too. It helped me constructing training menus and sparring strategies. It contains lots of helpful instructions.

4 out of 5 stars Good for the serious competitor.......2003-12-21

I've never been a fan of point sparring, but I have to admit this is a pretty good book. It's definetly not for the beginner, though. The technique section is very basic, giving only the briefest of discriptions on the kicks, but also providing suggestions on how the moves are best utilized. The book then goes into stratagies for TKD style sparring, though most of the drills and principles can be used by karateka as well. What does show a lot of depth is that the authors include chapters on sports medicine, nutrition, mental preparation, and conditioning. A lot of that information is useful to any serious martial artist who participates in point sparring, and I'd recoment the conditioning excersises be applied to any program. The book ends with a chapter on Olympic TKD rules, including weight classes and a list of fouls. A glossary follows. As this book was designed to prepare competitors and coaches for Olympic-level competition, I'd call it an essential publication to anyone who is competing at the national levels in any martial art point sparring.

5 out of 5 stars A lot more than it looks.......2003-10-19

I think this is a great book. If you ar looking for a big book with a lot of pictures in it, then this is not the book for you since wery few of the combinations are shown. But if you already know how to kick and how to punch, then that should not be a problem for you. Everyone involved in sparring as a practicioner or as a coach could learn a lot from this book. I certainly did, even thaug i practice ITF Taekwon-Do, since a lot of the bodywork and qualities you need are similar.

2 out of 5 stars Didnt like it.......2003-01-07

I didnt like this book and it was very boring. Its said the same things many times and the only thing I found useful were the moves that it showed. If this is the best book of TKD sparring I wonder what kind of books the others are.

5 out of 5 stars An Outstanding Taekwondo Book.......2002-01-30

It's a very well written about Taekwondo Kyorugi. One of the best. It tells you almost eveything about Olympic Style sparring. From the Skill, Strategies to the aspect of Sport Medicine.
Also, this book is very useful for all WTF style competitor.

5 out of 5 stars The essence of international classical piano competition.......2007-04-27

The Leeds triennial international piano competition is to the UK what the quadrennial Van Cliburn international piano competition is to the USA. The essence of this 1990 book is the dream and impetus of one of the great ladies of the Arts, Dame Fanny Waterman, who reportedly was "unable to sleep one summer night in 1961" and then waking her husband said, "Why don't we start an international piano competition?" The rest, as they say, is history although a history well rendered and documented in the book by Wendy Thompson with Dame Fanny Waterman.

So too, although I believe it needs to be strongly reiterated today, classical piano competitions need to be defended because as Dame Fanny Waterman rather 'realistically' points out in the Foreword of the book, ".... but with the breakdown years ago of the patronage system which fostered great soloists of previous generations, the competition ladder remains the only fair and reasonable alternative."

Note her use of the word "fostered" versus "foisted" because while great talent is a pre-requisite to being recognized, it is very difficult to get heard and recognized trying to do it alone and a case where the exceptions to success 'waiting to be discovered' remain minimal to the rule. In effect, the forum or competition has its place and despite post competition laundry lists of its "evils" and/or the "dehumanizing" aspects of same. Not to mention the difficulties of competition juror consensus or the inevitable comment post 'any' international piano competition of who was allegedly "robbed" of competition advancement or for that matter the first place win itself. But warts that are de facto inherent in such competitions are, in my view, outweighed by the competition opportunities. Much less the very real pressures, demands and intimidations inherent in the classical piano circuit itself!

An excellent read and the realities of the competition and hence most well known by name international competitions are not side stepped but confronted therein. Much of the same would easily and equally apply to the quadrennial Van Cliburn competition. There is another consideration, "stress" does "not" magically disappear when one "makes it" and hence those kinds of things which find their way into classical piano competitions will be ever present later on although how each individual artist deals with it becomes part and parcel of the career process. Think Horowitz! And so many others where it comes as a revelation for others to hear that "nerves" or "jitters" if you will still manifests itself and must be reckoned with even for those of the known and indeed publicly acclaimed virtuoso/virtuosa strata.

          Book Description

Fiddling for Norway is an engrossing portrait of a fiddle-based folk revival in Norway, one that in many ways parallels contemporary folk institutions and festivals throughout the world, including American fiddling. It is a detailed case study in the politics of culture, the causes and purposes of folk revivals, and the cultivation of music to define identity.

The book begins with an investigation of the people and events important to Norwegian folk fiddling, tracing the history of Norwegian folk music and the growth and diversification of the folk music revival. The narrative takes us to fiddle clubs, concerts and competitions on the local, regional, and national levels, and shows how conflicting emphases—local vs. national identity, tradition vs. aesthetic qualities—continue to transform Norwegian folk music. Goertzen utilizes a large anthology of meticulously transcribed tunes to illustrate personal and regional repertoires, aspects of performance practice, melodic gesture and form, and tune relationships. Ethnomusicologists and readers who fiddle will enjoy both the music and the stories it tells.

5 out of 5 stars WOW! Here Comes Alex!.......2000-07-29

After spending some time bumming around Europe this summer, I have fallen in love with the city of Berlin. Consequently, I have been trying to purchase anything I can on this great city- from books on its history; it's past architecture, to those illustrating its future! 'Alexanderplatz: Urban Planning Ideas Competition' is the most well put together architecture book I have purchased.

Pre-WWII Alexanderplatz found itself at the center of Berlin, as it did during the GDR days. After the fall of the wall, Alex (as Berliners call it) fell into obscurity. The communists rebuilt the historic square in a "cheap and symmetrical" building attitude-, which resulted in a plain, dull, and depressing atmosphere. Post Cold War Berlin sought to restructure Alex! With that restructuring, Alex will again find itself as the center of Berlin.

Therefore, a competition was held to determine the future of the square. In the end, Berlin's own Hans Kollhoff won the competition. His vision sees the demolition of all post-WWII buildings. Beautiful post-Modern buildings on the square and 13 towers just off the square will replace these buildings. The square will feature lots of office and residential space, as well as cultural space. The only communist structure to remain in the square is the international clock. Kollhoff's vision is amazing... The work, set to start soon, is not scheduled to be completed until 2020. That shows just how large the scope of this project is.

The book also includes many other architects' designs. Each design is accompanied by text, which explains the aim of the design in striking detail.

Packed with beautiful illustrations (pictures, maps, drawings, etc) and presented very elegantly this is an awesome book to have in your collection if you can obtain it.

I checked every week and just this past week there was one copy there...worth it without a doubt.

Also- the price info probably won't be on here... it was $49.95.

This is a fun set of books. Looking at Architectural competitions over a long period of time, you see the winning entry, several runners up, and an essay about the process in each competition (and they are some very individual processes). Plans, elevations, sketches, models, and photos of the finished product (if there was a finished product) are present in varying degrees. Really interesting for those focused on Architecture and a good read for anyone of omnivorous tastes.

In a strange and very perverse sense, it might just be appropriate that the appallingly awful HTD movie is Howard's predominant image in the public eye. Why, you ask? Well, I reply, because Howard himself was never really understood or appreciated by the world around him; that's the entire point. (And yeah, I wish the movie had been better, too. I'm just choosing to enjoy the irony.)

The tag-line for Steve Gerber's magnum opus was "Trapped in a world he never made!" and that pretty much sums it up. Howard is the epitome of anyone from one world mistakenly tranplanted into another. Visually, imagine if one of the myriad cartoon characters from the kiddie reels somehow got injected into a Martin Scorcese film. How would D***** Duck (pick your fave) react to a world of junkies, street thugs, dehumanizing media figures and stupid, indifferent politicians? Granted, there are assorted super-villain types and the occasional super-hero guest star here and there (it's a Marvel comic, after all), but they're not really the point, any more than the predictable parodies of at-the-time crazes like Kung Fu, Star Wars or the Exorcist. Underneath the slapstick, the thankfully abbreviated battles and the wry wisequacks -- er, wiseCRACKs, that is -- there's a substantial amount of insightful social commentary and genuine angst.

Of the assorted artists involved, Gene "the Dean" Colan remains the definitive HTD artist; who else could so convincingly merge the gothic banality of Cleveland streets and New York alleyways with the evolution-defying cartooniness of Howard's anatomy? WHo else could portray despair, madness, cynicism and just plain rage writ large across the face of a feathered critter who goes "BOOOIIINNNGGG!!" when he charges (reluctantly) into the fray? Let alone make a giant sea serpent wearing a top hat look scary?

But even Colan's excellent work takes a back seat (if only just barely) to Steve Gerber. Val Mayerik and other artists also turned in fine work on the series, but Gerber's writing could not be replaced. Possibly no other comic series of the '70's could have afforded this opportunity to break out of the genre's formulaic conventions, and possibly no other writer of the time could have made the most of such an opportunity anyway. If it helps, recall what Quentin Tarantino did for movies in the '90's, and then imagine the same sort of thing in comics, twenty years earlier. Then again, if that's too weird a notion to wrap your head around, don't sweat it; you'll still find a lot of humor to enjoy. Where else will you find a hero who flies across the world to his abducted girlfriend's rescue by winning a radio contest? ("I dunno...Grant, I guess.")

                4 out of 5 stars But, y-you're a duck!.......2006-03-19

I began collecting horror comics in the early 1970's "boom" that included "The Tomb of Dracula," and gradually began to sample super-hero books like "The Amazing Spider-Man." Somewhere along the way, in walked "Howard the Duck."
In a world of super-heroes, Howard was something different. As an outsider, he could comment on the many absurdities of the society he had become trapped in. An alternate interpretation of what most people had not stopped to question is a very valuable thing.
I remember the book having a big influence on how I looked at the world. It gave me a somewhat skeptical outlook on what the mainstream judged acceptable.
Monty Python's Flying Circus had already shown me how to poke fun at authority, and the Warren Commission had shown why this was necessary.
Howard tackled a broad range of issues, giving food for thought on the issues of government, religion, media, and personal relationships. I remember the stories where Howard suffered a breakdown as particularly disturbing, and at the same time enlightening. An adolescent grows up in "a world he/she never made," and sometimes wonders not just where the line is, but which side is the correct one.
When Steve Gerber left the book (or was fired?), I don't rememeber being particularly upset, but a re-reading of the series showed a definite vision and progress brutally interrupted in mid-stream.
It is too bad that the story wasn't completed, but what we have is still good reading, and still as relevant as it was then. Highly recommended.

I've loved some of the choices Marvel has made with their Essentials line. Instead of just sticking with the Marvel main-stays, Spider-man, Fantastic Four, X-Men, etc., they've been dipping into the pool of what many consider 2nd or 3rd tier characters whose adventures are not as well known. Howard the Duck has always been a favorite of mine, one of the more creative books to come out of the 70's in my opinion. Unfortunately a lot of people only know the character through the horrible Hollywood version of the character brought to us in the 80's. As with all the Essentials I wish the reprints were done in color. The paper quality doesn't bother me, I understand the need to keep product costs low.

The seventies were a relatively interesting time for comic books. The Golden Age was long gone and the Silver Age was coming to an end. The space was being filled by all sorts of writers and artists who grew up on the Marvel Age of the sixties and were trying to capture it or subvert it as werewolves, barbarians, vampires, man-things and ghost riders shared the stage with the super-heroes. It is somewhat of a stretch to know which category Howard the Duck fit into but it is even more surprising that it happened within the Marvel Universe itself at all ,and would sometimes guest star a character from said world, such as Spider-Man, the Man-Thing, or the Defenders. Steve Gerber did his best work on this series as it was the only comic book that was entirely appropriate for his style. His days with the Defenders were never a good fit and his time with the Man-Thing are best forgotten. Gene Colan also did some of this best work with this series, second only to his Tomb of Dracula. It is one of the delightful suprises of the series to see how Colan was able to go from the darkness of one to the visual humour of the other. The Essential Howard the Duck is a beautiful glimpse into the seventies at their most unique. It is wonderful that in a world of super-heroes and monsters, for one brief, shining moment a duck walked amongst them and, on occasion, soared above them.

5 out of 5 stars Far ahead of its time... and much needed nowadays........2005-06-08

So, tonight, my local comic book store had this great 50% off sale on TPB's, and I happened to pick up Essential Howard the Duck.
Now, being in comic fandom for a good few years, I'd always read about Howard the Duck. But except for a few appearances in the back of Wizard magazine and vague memories of the horrendous live -action movie, all I had going for me was what came down through the grapevine - and all that came down to me was some really positive buzz. So it was with great anticipation that I sat down with the book tonight.
And boy, did Marvel's favourite anthropomorphic fowl not disappoint. Ahead of his time? Try ahead of -our- time. What an astonishing book - I'm honestly speaking when I say that it deserves much more praise than it's getting nowadays.
This is some great stuff, bringing in metaliterary commentary on social trends and Western culture's normative cultural ethos. Even if the new volume of She-Hulk is attempting to continue the humourous vein set in the '70s and '80s by books like this and She-Hulk volume 1, it seems that the cultural, ethical discussions prevalent even in mainstream comic media in the Bronze Era (is that what they're calling it these days?) has been wholly excised from these modern series.
With its thinly veiled but highly positive social commentary, and constant nods to classic literature (a seemingly tormented, wild man who watches over a young girl in a late-1800s style house is called "Heathcliff Rochester," a nod to the Bronte sisters), philosophy (Howards has Hegel), and other intellectual landmarks in the western canon, Howard the Duck has a little bit of everything for everybody. Very highly recommended.

Years after the funniest character to come out of Marvel comics disappeared off the face of the Earth after the ungodly George Lucas produced film tanked, original creator Steve Gerber brings back Howard the Duck under Marvel's mature readers MAX line. Giving Gerber complete freedom to do what he wants, this relaunch of Howard the Duck finds our cigar chomping hero and his human girlfriend Beverly down and out and living near a junkyard. Things change however after Beverly lands a high paying job, only to learn that it's run by her ex-husband and Howard's arch nemesis Dr. Bong, and a devious plot is uncovered. Loaded with scathing satire, Gerber spares no expense at poking fun at boy bands, modern politics, Oprah and Dr. Phil, and religion; while even going a step further in spoofing other comic characters. After doing a wonderful spoof of Witchblade, Gerber orchestrates Howard and Beverly checking into the Boarding House of Mystery where he deliriously pokes fun at Vertigo comics like Preacher, Hellblazer, Transmetropolitan, and Sandman. Look around and you'll even find John Constantine, Spider Jerusalem, and Morpheus and his family; which frankly is surprising that Marvel agreed to go along with Gerber's ideas. There's art by Phil Winslade and a guest spot by Preacher cover artist Glen Fabry to boot, which makes an already great package even sweeter. All in all, Gerber's MAX look at Howard the Duck is one of the best things to carry the MAX banner, and this is a real treat for older readers who have fond memories of Gerber's old comics, and maybe, just maybe, we can all put those old bad memories of that movie to rest.

Who'd have thought it. Decades after the darkest and funniest mainstream comics-book character was banished to the outer limits by that film, he's back and hasn't lost any of that world-weary invective and sarcasm we love.

Gerber's got a lot to say about the state of the consumerist world we live in and there's plenty of targets to have fun with.

The artwork is excellent, especially Fabry's contribution.

I'd give it 5 stars but it's too damn short.

Howard the Duck to me was a movie. A very bad, dumb, never should have been made movie. Howard the Duck in real life is a comic book produced by Marvel Comics that first appeared in the 1970s. A comic so successful, it burn out into cancellation. And it took people some 30 years to bring back the foul mouthed mallard back into the foray in he MAX line of adult comics produced these days by Marvel.

Gerber, the creator of Howard, is an angry, very frustrated writer who wants to bash anyone in his way. And he does get his chance to in this comic. Who's in his way, you might ask? Well everyone and his mother. Gerber smashes boy bands, Donald the Duck, The Witchbalde, Garth Ennis's and Steve Dillon's Preacher and even religion itself to name but a few. What you get is a myriad adventure to adventure starring Howard the Duck and his human girlfriend, Beverly.

Phile Winslade is an artist of the worst comic joining Daredevil and Spider-Man. His art was bad there, but where he fails there, he makes up for here. His art is atounding and Howard never looked better and cooler. He manages to make his art very realistic and simple. No big muscled, perfect anatomy super heroes, but he does get to draw naked women. His art works well with the realistic, yet out of the world plot and script by Gerber. Both bring out a story that is as excellent as it is outrageous.

In all, it's a wonderful book to have if you didn't have the individual comic of the miniseries. The MAX lise is great and I wonder who gets to be showcased next. I just hope Howard comes back for an encore.

Yes, I agree the movie was awful. It sucked rocks! But the original comic book was The Greatest Work Of Literature In The Latter Half Of The 20th Century, and helped to make me the man I am today. Steve Gerber's writing is better than ever in this new book, which is a compilation of a series that was released under the Marvel MAX line earlier this year. MAX is a special line of comics Marvel publishes especially for adults, featuring naked female breasts, curse words, and (especially in the case of HTD) captiousness, cynicism, political incorrectness, and a general lack of respect for everything society holds dear. We need more books like this. Marvel -- how about another Gerber-authored HTD series? Heck -- just sell him the gosh-darned character already! It's not worth anything without him!!!

Howard the Duck was written by Steve Gerber at the height of his powers. And Steve Gerber, for my money, stands on the pinnacle of comic creators (and this is coming from someone who has read thousands of comics over the last thirty years). If I had to list one feature of Gerber's writing that stands out above all others, it would be characterisation. This may be a comic book about a talking duck and his girlfriend, but these two are more vivid and realised than nearly all the characters you'll find in comics, film or TV. However, characterisation is just for starters - Gerber puts more care and intelligence into his comics than you'll find arguably anywhere. Howard the Duck is no exception, and in addition to all of the above, you'll find a weird, penetrating and possibly disturbing take on the decadence of modern society, pop psychology, religion and a lot of other issues not usually addressed in the comics. Phil Winslade and Glenn Fabry's art is also gorgeous. Very, very highly recommended for anyone who still likes comic books, but wishes they were more intelligent. The Essential Howard the Duck and Nevada are likewise very highly recommended.

The way the movie tanked at the box office it's no surprise this book isn't more widely read. However, I have a soft spot for the film precisely because of the book. Weiner writes in a style reminiscent of Douglas Adams, fleshing out the story and adding some much needed humor.
Whatever your opinion of the movie give this book a try.

4 out of 5 stars Mad Just Before the Decline........2003-11-02

Mad as a magazine hit its pinacle in the mid 1960s and then began a decline away from the adult readership to the aimed at kids pap it is today.

The 1970s was however was a fertile period but you can see Mad's shift away from social issues towards the entertainment industry.

                            Still a fun read though.

4 out of 5 stars When MAD was at its best!.......2002-11-03

Reading this book shows you MAD Magazine as it once was, the only place where anyone and anything can be slammed without stirring contrversy. I am a MAD subscriber and the issues I get have a lot of sexual innuendo or white trash humor or stereotypes of young adult life. (But it's still funny) MAD was great in the 70s, and am I glad to own a copy of this!

5 out of 5 stars hysterically funny remembrances of the seventies.......1999-01-20

If you lived through the seventies, and watched t.v. and movies during that period, this will bring all of the fun memories back to you! The satires of the movies and t.v. shows are, in particular, HILARIOUS!!!
