Book Description
Among the best known and most honored living Native American artists, Dan Namingha blends realism and abstract modernism with stunning graphic power. Both a biography and a critical study, this book is the first to present Namingha's dazzling paintings and sensuous bronze sculptures inspired by the cultural symbols and landscape of the desert Southwest.
Thomas Hoving, former director of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, examines Namingha's Hopi heritage (his great-grandmother was a legendary Hopi potter) and his childhood on a reservation in Arizona, and explains their influence on his art. The 120 stunning illustrations, including 80 full-color plates-ranging from the powerful Kachina series of paintings to a monumental bronze for the New Mexico state capitol-convey the stark imagery and timelessness of the works of this gifted, original, and important Pueblo artist.
120 illustrations, 80 in full color, 9 x 10 1/2"
THOMAS HOVING was director of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, from 1966 to 1977, staging numerous exhibitions including the blockbuster art show "The Treasures of Tutankhamun." In the past 20 years he has written 14 books, among them Art for Dummies and two national best-sellers.

He is one of the most exciting artists, Native American or otherwise, working today. This book gives a fine portrayal of him as a person and of his work

Not good for anyone over XL .......2007-09-17
I got pretty excited about the title--however, when I got this book I noticed that a majority of them were for sizes starting with small (modeled on thin girls)and there were a larger amount that topped out at XL. The prettiest sweaters are not for anyone over a large. If it was plus sized, why were small patterns even considered? Save your money if you are looking for plus sized patterns.
Family Circle easy knit and crochet.......2007-03-30
I got the book and thumbed through it a bit. The pictures do help; however, I would prefer to see the schematics/charts right next to the pattern instead of most of it being continued at the end of the book. It has a very good variety of sweaters I would wear; additionally, it includes some sweaters for men.
Great selection of Womanly sized knits!.......2007-01-14
This book is wonderful. It has a great range of styles for different body types and has something to flatter every figure, in the average woman's range. The patterns are wonderfully written and pictured in this book. The skill levels required for the patterns range from the easy to the experienced with a good number being intermediate but still easy enough to follow that a new knitter could attempt it. For these reasons I love this book and have recommended it to my friends who have purchased it as well!
That's great, but...crochet?.......2005-08-05
Listen to the crocheters who picked this book up only to find the one truly awful shawl pattern. The title is definitely misleading and the lack of crochet patterns was a sad disappointment. If you're really curious about this book, find it at your local library or get it through interlibrary loan. Nothing here for the crochet enthusiast.
Crocheters beware!!.......2005-07-16
I was very disappointed in this book. Out of 48 patterns only ONE is crocheted and it is a very ugly shawl that resembles a big spider web - there wasn't even the obligatory granny square vest. However, if you're a knitter there are a few nice looking sweaters that might make this book worth your while -- quite a few are rated for beginners.

Fun ideas.......2007-06-12
This book surprised me. I was not expecting it to be all that useful. A young friend wanted me to make one of the patterns so I purchased it. Low-and-behold it's full of fun ideas. Being a pattern tweaker from way back I can see all kinds of possibilities. This book is worth shelf space.
If You Like Unique and Classy, This Book is Worth a Look.......2007-01-09
I have a hard time finding crochet or knitting patterns that look classy, funky, fashionable, yet not dowdy or dumpy. When I got this book from the library, I was thrilled. This book takes all kinds of patterns from the 1900's (most decades) and reworks them for today- keeping the essence of the pattern, but with the comfort of today.
I just love the different funky and unique ideas in here as well as the old staples like hats, scarves, etc.
There are many different types of yarns showcased in this book from the old staples of woolen type yarns to the funky fur with lumps that is so popular today.
This book has feminine cardigans and jackets, vests and shrugs, shawls and wraps, sweaters for all ages, hats and caps for everyone, baby things, and really cool and fun wristlets, gauntlets, mittens, socks and slippers as well as gloves.
There are some patterns for blankets and throws to round it all out.
So far, I am really impressed with this book and it sits among some of my select few favorites. I love the idea that it has BOTH Crochet and Knitting- all of which are interesting and motivational. There are also many levels of projects in difficulty too.
I can not rave about this book enough- it is right up there with my favorites from the Stich N Bitch collection (I only like a few of those), and even more exciting than many of those.
If you can get it out of the library first or see it at a bookstore that will tell you if you want to have it in your collection. I probably would never have ordered this if I had not seen it first, because there are SO many books out there that have disappointed me. After seeing it however, I am absolutely thrilled with it.
This is so much fun!.......2007-01-04
I'm a relatively new knitter. I love this pattern book! Lion has been around forever and has taken their designs from the 20s,30s, and 40s, and put a stylish new spin on them. My favorites are the wonderful hats and what Lion calls The Poet's Jacket. Today we'd call it a shrug, but the design is slightly different and quite lovely. Beginner or seasoned, crocheter or knitter, this book has something for everyone!
Knitting for Today's Home.......2006-12-21
Nancy Thomas and Charlotte Quiggle have combed the Lion Brand archives for patterns to reinterpret for today's modern lifestyle. Lion Brand Yarn Vintage Styles for Today: more than 50 patterns to knit and crochet is the result, illustrating the company's contribution to fashion over the last century.
To use vintage patterns to make modern garments, attention must be paid to sizing and fit. In the past, styles were more fitted with higher armholes, narrower waists and less ease. As the editors point out, "since our bodies are so different today from those of our forebears, whether because of undergarments or because of diet, any reference to 'size' in a vintage pattern is relatively meaningless."
Today, fit is looser, and for some patterns in this book significant design changes have been made to create modern looks. One blanket, originally created as a baby item, has been redesigned in bulky yarn, resulting in the stitch pattern now appearing as a modern leaf design.
The patterns in Lion Brand Yarn Vintage Styles for Today are evenly split between knit and crochet and all skill levels are covered. All patterns of course use Lion Brand yarns; however, the Standard Yarn Weight system icons are included for each pattern, allowing for yarn substitutions. Patterns cover the gamut from unusual shrugs to sweaters, layettes to something for man's best friend.
Armchair Interviews says: Something here for everyone.
Cool Vintage Styles.......2006-07-05
This book is exactly what I was looking for - vintage fashion for the entire family. There is beautifully feminine sweaters, shawls, and more for women, as well as stylish sweaters and accessories for men and children. There are varying levels of skills required for these patterns - some easy and some more advanced. There is also a wonderful "vintage" photograph of the original pattern for you to compare to your newer, more updated version. Lots to look at in this book!

A bad example.......2005-06-10
I am an avid John Constantine fan, and own every collected edition released thus far...but I wish I hadn't bought this one. The 3 stories in the collection that came from the original series were excellent, especially the one by Neil Gaiman (from Hellblazer #27), but the movie adaptation lacked everything that draws people to the pages of John Constantine: Hellblazer. It was bland and lackluster, deficient in both visuals and script. There was none of the old eloquence and sinister power in the dialogue, the characters were boring and unexpressive, and the plot read like a courtroom brief. Strictly speaking, in spite of all the changes they made to the character, the movie was much better than this sad little representation could convey. I gave this book 2 stars purely out of consideration for the 3 stories taken from the comic series...stories which I reread from time to time in the other collections, and which stand out as classic Constantine.
This dosen't give the movie justice.......2005-05-07
It was a good story and the extra collected stories were good but as for the adaptation, I felt that a lot was left out and it moved really fast. The story is good but the adaptation could of had a little more effort.
Meet John Constantine.......2005-01-23
With the looming release of the upcoming Constantine movie with Keanu Reeves in the starring role, there has never been a better time to check out Hellblazer. From DC Comics' mature themed line Vertigo, Hellblazer is the series that took John Constantine, a hard drinking, hard smoking, bad luck magic mage that was created by comic god Alan Moore in Swamp Thing, and put the character in the forefront. With the comics and graphic novels receiving more attention than before with the upcoming release of the film, Vertigo has released this TPB, which collects the comic adaptation of the film, as well as three single issues written by Jamie Delano, Neil Gaiman, and Garth Ennis. The comic adaptaion, scripted by Steven T. Seagle, has little character development and is pretty jumpy. However, it does retain much of the atmosphere and attitude that made the Hellblazer comics so great, so who knows how the movie could turn out. The three single issues however, are worth checking out. The first, written by Jamie Delano and is the beginning of the Original Sins graphic novel, is the very first issue of Hellblazer. It's a solid read in it's own right, but it's not the best to come from the title. The second is a rare issue by Sandman creator Neil Gaiman entitled Hold Me, and is by far one of the best and most touching issues of the series ever penned. The last part is the beginning of the Dangerous Habits story, written by Preacher creator and current Punisher scribe Garth Ennis. It was Ennis' first American comic story, as our hero learns he has terminal lung cancer, and not long to live. This collection will leave you begging for more, and rightfully so, as now has never been a better time to check out one of the best and most refreshing comics to be published over the past decade.

Book Description
Known as a central figure in English literature, Hilaire Belloc produced a number of stunning, funny, and clever admonishments for children. The tales in this volume, illustrated by the inimitable Edward Gorey, contain instructive lessons for almost everyone.
For those children prone to wandering off from their caretakers, there is the story of a certain young Jim, "who ran away from his nurse and was eaten by a lion." Those known to stretch the truth will hardly be comforted by the tale of Matilda, "who told lies and was burned to death." And as for those of us--and our children--who tend to the vainglorious, there is the sobering tale of Godolphin Horne, "who was cursed with the sin of pride and became a boot-black."
Witty, brilliant, and strikingly irreverent.

Revisiting CAutionary Tales.......2007-05-18
This was one of the loved books of my childhood in the original edition, of course.
I hadn't seen it for a very long time and was anxious to haev a copy for my younger grandchildren. Though old people can enjoy it as well.
Now plesed to have it on my own shelves
Dark humor and delightful drawings.......2007-05-07
I got this to read to my nephews, and it did not disappoint when the time came to pick a story to read. I highly recommend this and the Gashlycrumb Tinies to anyone with children or nephews....
What you do comes back.......2006-05-03
I just gave this to a friends' one year old for her birthday. In the inscription I wrote that she ought to read and learn, as whatever she does in life will come back to haunt her. My friend thought the book hysterical. Her husband thinks we're both odd...
Completing the Edward Gorey library.......2006-01-27
JIM, who ran away from his nurse and was eaten by a lion.
It's small wonder that Edward Gorey chose to illustrate Belloc's verses, written nearly a century ago - in fact, they were such a clear and strong influence on his work, it's hard to believe he didn't write them himself. 'Cautionary Tales' is a literary work that was years ahead of its time, parodying the overtly-strict educational children's verses of the time with tales of children whose punishment is wholly disproportioned to their crime. Gorey's illustrations, published only after his death in 2000, complete the ghoulish verses with his trademark naïve and refined black and white crosshatching. Already in his seventies, Gorey has lost none of his charm and style and these illustrations are as nasty and sarcastic as anything he's done, perfectly complimenting the ironic text.
'Cautionary Tales' is the first work of Gorey's published after his death, and it's a perfect conclusion to his illustrious career, and one of his finest works. It's an essential to any fan of this great artist.
Deliciously twisted.......2005-11-18
One can imagine Edward Gorey mulling over these "Cautionary Tales",subsequently creating succinct Goreyesque illustrations for them. Then years later after presenting his family to us in "The Willowdale Handcar" he undoubtedbly mulled over ideas about families & children and came up with my personal favorite Gorey: The Gashleycrumb Tinies. If you like Gorey & you like the Tinies, you'll enjoy "Cautionary Tales".
4 stars only because I happen to like the devilishly wonderful "Tinies" better.

Cautionary for children?.......2006-08-27
It may seem like a bizarre sort of set of verses to read to children, but my mother grew up with it, and I think my grandfather did, and it didn't give them nightmares! Kids get caught up in the pattern of the words and adults enjoy these catchy verses as something quaint and charming.
Simply wonderful comic verse.......2002-02-26
Unlike most of the appreciators of Hilaire Belloc's comic verse for children, I first came to these wonderfully droll verses as an adult (I was brought up on Samuel Hoffenstein and Ogden Nash), but I have grown to love them as if I had known them since my earliest years (hey, that's the start of "Lord Lundy"). In his "Beasts", "Cautionary Tales" and "Peers" verses, Belloc achieves a delightful synthesis of the fearless straight-ahead gaze of childhood (in the tradition of "The Story of Augustus, Who Would Not Eat His Soup") with the style of absolutely dead-pan English humor (e.g. Stephen Potter's "Gamesmanship"). Do not neglect the verses in "Peers" and "More Peers"; "Lord Hippo" and "Lord Lucky" are the equal of "Matilda" and "Jim". Note for Lord Peter fans: Dorothy L. Sayers has Peter Wimsey quote several times from these Belloc poems.
A book of great poems of lessons for children.......2002-01-17
This is an excellent book. It is small and pocket-sized so my children can handle it very easily. This book is advertized as being a hardcover when it actually is not. It is still worth it to get it, though.
Very funny..........2001-07-19
Outrageous, yet, delivering a straight-forward moral lesson, Belloc's cautionary tales are classic.
Delightful!.......2001-07-04
I learnt lots of these poems as a child in school - perhaps I had a teacher with a wicked and somewhat warped sense of humour! And I have never forgotten how wonderful they are. My personal favourite is about poor Jim, who gets into so much trouble, but the others are equally delightful.
These gleefully moral tales are never out of date. Children will be naughty, and a good rhyme has a timelessness of its own. Share them with your own children and be amused together!
